I was an Usher at a movie theater from 1988-1993...and I tell you: *that* was the true golden age of cinema. Siskle and Ebert were regulars at our place!
The movie Dead Presidents was a Hollywood Pictures/Disney film. Directed by the same Directors of Menace II Society. Hardcore R rated. Definitely worth a watch. It’s about Vietnam Vets
I've noticed that the 100 million dollar budget is making a bit of a comeback. With all the high-profile and expensive flops of the last couple of years, I hope it becomes a real trend.
PG-13 is the most used age rating not only by Disney, but also used by another movie majors such as Universal, Paramount, United Artists, Columbia Pictures, Warner Bros, MGM and 20th Century Studios (20th Century Fox), all them used PG-13 for improve the raise of the box office at the cost of deleting specific and smalls details such as gore, nudity and f bombs, and that's the reason of why the quantity of rated-R movies we're reduced since 2000s.
And now a days, Disney is mostly a conglomerate that just buys out studios, takes over all the titles and shells out sequels-galore with barely any originality.
“Blood In Blood Out” may have been a flop when it was released but over 30 years later it is still a cult classic in the Latino community, especially here in Los Angeles.
Chicago Chicano here! I honestly can't stress how important this movie is for Latinos. I watch it for the first time in years about a year ago. I honestly went in thinking it wouldn't live up or might be a little cringey. And yeah, at times that maybe a little true. But man that ending. I honestly don't know to describe it but it made me feel a certain way and feel proud of who I am.
Carolco/Cinergi went bust because they spent far too much on movies. Nothing they made cost less than $50 million. Cutthroat island in 1995, sunk the studios as it cost $100 million. Orion went down around the same time with Cannon. Cannon was too ambitious, yet too tight with budgets as they never had major studio money and should have focused on B-movies under $30 million and straight to video movies.
Hollywood Pictures could have been Disney's genre label for horror and thriller. I mean, yes they had Dimension Films as well but Disney had Miramax operate autonomously outside of the company.
That's crazy Disney shot themselves in the foot and sold off the worldwide distribution rights for The Sixth Sense because they had no confidence in it. I remember when that came out when I was in high school. It was such a massive phenomenon. Everyone was talking about the twist. Shame that the studio responsible for it didn't get to reap the benefits.
Disney never should've gotten involved with that franchise and never should have done business with a crook like Haim Saban. The only reason they did is to get back at Barry Diller over what station *DuckTales* was on in LA.
As someone who stumbled upon ur channel while scrolling during a work bathroom break (and then took 30 minutes to “poop” while i watched the video) this is wonderful content. I knew eisner when i was a kid. My earliest memory is from 1988 when he took my dad n me to a baseball game while they talked business. Its crazy to see how things i saw as normal as a kid were giant upheavals or terrible flops in the broader world. At one point, every movie u listed, i owned. (After 99, i stopped asking for movies from eisner. Idk what changed, maybe i became a teen n was “too cool” to ask for videos lol. Stupid me) i really appreciate your insight on this stuff :)
My friends and I once won a game of Scattegories by naming Quiz Show as our movie, when given the letter Q. My backup was Quetzcoatl: the Winged Serpent from 1982.
For the record, Blood in Blood out has developed a huge cult following in the Latino community. Still waiting for Disney to open the vault and release the 5 hour cut of that movie.
i love your videos so much as film + business have always been deep interests of mine, but god did this one make me wanna cry. being born in the mid 90s a lot of these films have sentimental value to me. the fact that mid budget dramas and thrillers are pretty much non existent (especially theatrically) is so sad. 😢
Man, there's something about The Invisible in general that makes me rewatch it once every couple years, and knowing that movie was also the last one to be released by Hollywood just adds another dimension to it.
I saw The Invisible in theaters back in 2007 which eventually was the last film from Hollywood Pictures after Disney decided to defunct it. At the time, they brought Pixar and were rebranding their labels retiring the Buena Vista name.
@@NeverSaySandwich1 it's not interesting for me btw he should pickup Geffen Company instead because we don't know why Geffen Shutdown in late 90s and how it surprisingly came back this year

These movies came from an era when it was obviously cheaper to 90 minutes make sub-standard ill-conceived dreck than it was to mothball the studio plots and staff until a decent script lands at the desk in reception.

When I first saw the logo and label Hollywood Pictures, I thought how generic is that since technically most American movies are out of Hollywood. But they served out some great films like The Rock, Crimson Tide, While You Were Sleeping, and Mr Holland's Opus.
There should be a whole subgenre of UA-cam video essays for videos about 90s Disney loosely based on DisneyWar. Classic, reliable genre which always features the big reveal of Michael Eisner and a turning point around Frank Wells’ death.
Can you imagine being a studio executive?! Thousands of people are depending on you to produce films that generate tens (or even hundreds) of millions of dollars. What a job!
Disney owns Searchlight through the Fox purchase. While about half of their movies end up on streaming, they still released The Menu and Poor Things. These aren't just grandfathered-in projects either, they have a lot of movies slated like the Bob Dylan biopic and Super Troopers 3. Theatrically, it's not at the level Hollywood Pictures was at, but Disney is still in the low-mid budget game.
With Touchstone also folding up, Disney has pretty much made the acquired 20th Century Studios and FX their new older-oriented media studios. Whether that’s proven to be a good thing or not remains to be seen.
Wow.. Honest question: Successes aside, has any label spent more money on / released a larger quantity of absolute flops?? I was shocked by how many of those films i've never heard of.

All it took was Disney to learn they could release PG-13 movies themselves to kill off both Hollywood AND Touchstone.
Pretty much. Once they made Pirates … it was a wrap!
