The most humble gentleman that my friend Dan said he ever met. Eventually over a cup of coffee this man after the urging of my dear friend and brother Dan ask him again if he might remember the band that he was in? And Randy said yes; it was a little band called "The Eagles...!" "Before that I was in a band called Poco' and I still play with them from time to time...!!!" Randy Meisner is truly a beloved figure in rock music and anyone who saw his solo shows or bought a solo record knows this guy never let his Eagles legacy down. I love Don Henley and even share a birthday with him (July 22nd) so I've got nothing but love for Don, Eagles and Randy. I really hope Don uses his power in the Eagles to bring Randy back for some shows as well as Don Felder. It would be great.
Don Henley and Glenn Frey are jerks. I would like to see Randy and Fingers back in the band but it will be a Don Henley gets more money now that Glenn is gone and they will replace Glenn with a hired gun like they did when they fired Fingers. That's if the Eagles toured again. I will not go to another Eagles show without Fingers. A band should be a members are equal parts and shared revenue, not I should get more than you ala Henley and Frey or James Dio in Dio.
Bernie Leadon quit because of Glenn Frey. Randy Meisner quit because of Glenn Frey. Don Felder was fired because of Glenn Frey. The Eagles broke up because of Glenn Frey.
And Henley was just as bad if not worse. Frankly, I pretty much stopped listening to them after Bernie Leadon left; with Joe Walsh and On the Border the band pretty much went in a totally different direction.
Randy and Don Felder were my two favorite members of the Eagles, IMO the Eagles went downhill after Randy left, I personally wish it was Randy who got invited back to the band for their 1994 reunion instead of Timothy B. Schmit.
funny, the same with me. Randy and Felder. I studied music in college and was a vocalist and could sing Randy's parts with ease, can't anymore. He was great. My personal belief is that had Felder not joined the band, the Eagles would be died long before the 1980. It's too bad that Frey and Henley never gave him the respect he deserved.
They wanted Randy but he was in no fit state health wise, the only one not asked was Felder. I saw the tour and up until Walsh came on it was pretty mediocre to be honest which was sad because I saw them in '75 and they were one of the best bands I've seen live and I have seen a hell of a lot!
It’s a shame some people barely know who Randy is because Frey (may he Rest In Peace) and Henley made sure to push Timothy B. Schmit to the front after Randy left. I highly recommend History of the Eagles to anyone who hasn’t seen it. It sheds a light on Randy, Felder, and Bernie Leadon
Cameron Hasko ......... I'll be honest here. My all time favorite song is 'Take It To The Limit', I always thought that it was Glen who was singing the song. It wasn't until earlier this year, where the song kept running through my mind. So I youtubed it. And to my surprise, it wasn't Glen!!...lol... And I didn't even know who Randy was. And NOW!!!!! I'm a big fan of Randy's, and have listening to alot of his songs. He's becoming one of my favorite singers. And I'm also learning alot of the behind the scenes of the Eagles! Also, where can I find the 'History of The Eagles'?
@@renee-kingsdaughter5584 Read Don Felders book."When Hell Freezes Over" gives you a lot of insight of how life was with The Eagles, they were like a dysfunctional family. Think of how great a band they would have been had they been able to get along better and make more studio albums, they didnt make that many.....I think like 6.
The History of the Eagles doc is a must-see but Frey & Henley were very involved in production and final outcome of the film. I don't like how they edited Randy's part as it didn't portray the full picture of how abusive Frey and Henley were. The film was primarily a rebuttal to Don Felder's book and I thought both Frey and Henley came off as huge a#@ holes.
Thanks for this interview. It's interesting to see the comments whenever one or more of the Eagles are the subject. Often, more is said about personalities than the music. I've studied Randy Meisner's playing a lot, and he really is one of the best country rock bass players ever. The word "seminal" is bandied around quite a bit, but in this case the term is apropos. Randy truly helped to shape the mold.
We just saw an Eagles and Joe Walsh tribute band. They were good but I've grown tired of the Frey/Henley songs , eg. Long Run, New Kid, Lyin Eyes. I saw Eagles twice in the 70s and I enjoy listening to Poco much more these days, more upbeat IMO. Randy, Tim B, Paul Cotton and Richie Furay are 4 of my all-time fav singers.
They all had their dark side . Most famous bands are imprisoned by fame ,locked in hotels and studios together eventually forming alliances and turning on each other . Their music is what we should be remembering them for
Randy had supergroup talent but a cover band mentality. You can't be a part of a group like the Eagles and expect to be able to shop in antique shops unnoticed. Felder wanted to sing, except he had no voice. Frey and Henley were businessmen first and musicians second. Joe Walsh was a party animal in the same breath as Belushi. This group was a powder keg.
In the end, when all is said and done, and personality differences and business disagreements and personal arguments are put aside and forgiveness is the rule of the day, it's really all about the Music. So, Keep on Rockin' in The Free World.
bands blocking content on UA-cam is pathetic. people have owned every rendition of every Eagle song, on every format for 40 years. now that i'm sixty, i don't want to be bothered with getting a disc out of storage. Screw them all, they were all a bunch of jerks.
I married an East Texan & they all worship at the feet of Don Henley, couldn't say I agreed or even understood. Like Red Skelton said "you can always tell a Texan, you just can't tell them much" 💕💯
The reason why Randy left the band had nothing to do with the "Take It To The Limit" fight. That was just the icing on the cake. Unlike the others in the band, Randy lived in Nebraska and had been married with kids for ages. I think he was just sick and tired of the Eagles merry-go-around. As Henley once said, the main reason why the band busted up in 1980 is that they just worked non stop without a break. I just think Meisner got sick of it. It is a normal reason for people to leave bands. The refusal of the Eagles to take a break was also an underrated aspect of Bernie Leadon leaving the band. Yes, there were musical differences too (another common reason for guys to leave), but Bernie was tired of the merry-go-around as well. As it turns out, Bernie was the healthy one in the band. He partied far less than the others. The conflicts that Frey had with Leadon and Meisner are normal within bands. I think the relationship that REALLY turned bad was the relationship between Frey and Don Felder. I mean, I look at Frey's eyes in "The History of the Eagles." He just hated Felder with a passion.
I think it's pretty well known if you look at the totality, both Meisner & Leadon left because it was not the kind of band or fame they wanted. Linda Ronstadt basically put the original band together & I think if the band was put together organically, at least Leadon wouldn't be part of it. I read so many different things about who hates Felder the most. One article says Frey hated him the most & another says Henley hates him the most. They both hated him - he messed up the band. For him, it was all about the money.
WOW So Frey & Henley were innocent....So that's why Frey Bragged how he fucked Felder out of Money on the Hell freezes over tour. Get your facts straight Fan-girl
Love listening to Randy's interviews, but all that stuff floating across the screen, was very distracting. I scrolled down so I could listen to the interview, without watching the video.
He and Henley were riding in lemon and getting personal message therapists for the entire family( theirs) and chefs and what not. The other guys were getting Fords and a salary for songs they had written. They should have all been sharing the wealth. Just like Joe Walsh. He was turned into some stepford wife type by them!! Too afraid to lose his station in life. Trouble is, without the collective band mates they would have been nothing. When they went out on their own they weren’t nearly as perfect as they expected everyone else to be!
I like it when people say " you say things that you really dont mean to say" Yes you DO mean to say it, when you're angry or you've had enough, your true feelings come out!
When I watched the Eagles documentary, Glenn said this to Randy after that fist fight: "Why don't you just quit?! If you're not happy, quit!" So it sounded like Glenn forced Randy out of the band after he refused to sing Take It To The Limit and after their brawl. When the Eagles were about to start their History Of The Eagles tour, Randy was one of the two former Eagles (the other being Bernie Leadon, since Don Felder wasn't asked back) to be invited on tour, but Randy had health issues and was unable to participate, making Bernie Leadon the only former member to join the tour. It unfortunately was Glenn's final tour. Randy was very shocked and devastated when Glenn died, and he must have been very sad and that he (along with Bernie Leadon and Don Felder) was never asked to join his former Eagles bandmates at the Kennedy Center Awards. Randy Meisner was not only a great vocalist, but a great bass guitarist as well.
There were numerous times during that tour where Meisner refused to sing Take it to the Limit. It was not a single event. Frey told Meisner that there were people in the audience that have waited their whole lives to buy an Eagles ticket and listen to ALL of their songs and his job was to sing his song and do his part just like everyone else in the band. After the fight, Frey did state, "why don't you just quit?" I seriously doubt, Frey expected him to really quit but it did happen. I do not blame Frey for this because he was doing his job as the band leader. It is a fact that during several medical conditions that Randy Meisner had over the years, Frey made himself available and financially helped Meisner with medical expenses.

tubeyouall2 It was a single time. YOU dont know jack fuckingf shit about it. Get the fuck out of here.
@tubeyouall2 “Several medical conditions”? Where are you getting this info? The only incident that’s been made public was when Randy was hospitalized after a choking incident. Before working on the documentary I seriously doubt Glenn had anything to do with Randy.
Did they really go that far? I mean fist fight? I saw the documentary History of the Eagles and all that has been said was Frey just yelled "Fuck you, then!" to Randy when he refused to sing Take it to The Limit then they "almost" got into an actual fight? Anyway, I can't blame both. That song is really hard and I know where Randy is coming from but on the other hand, Glenn wanted to give fans what they deserved.
I always had a soft spot for Randy and also for Don Felder; each was such an enormous talent, and their contributions helped make the band legendary. But there are always two sides to every story...Glenn and Don Henley were the founders and driving force behind the band, and the decisions they made, songs they wrote, and musical performances shaped the band and made it the enormous success that it was.
6 років тому+5
Hardly. The Eagles two best-selling songs were by Meisner and Felder. 3rd best seller was co-written by Jackson Browne. You actually have no point.
Don and Glenn were NOT the founders. There were 4 originals - those two plus Randy and Bernie Leadon. Those 4 went to Geffen together as an unnamed super group. Don and Glenn WERE, however, the egomaniacs and bullies of the group.
Bernie and Randy were founding members too. Don and Glenn would have amounted to nothing if not for Randy and Bernie, even though they never would admit it.
I think the fight within the eagles is due mainly to greed of money. What do you think else is the reason. Leadon pouring beer on Glen’s head, Meisner having fistfight with Glenn and Don felder’s legal battle with eagles and felder’s conflict with Glenn at stage. Glenn and don henley don’t value much of these people as their band partners but to make money for themselves. But if all of them paid equally or say at least not half of one of the others, it should had been a beautiful thing for the band such as there would be no infighting. It should had been better if Frey and Henley valued friendship than money as the saying goes “life is very short”!!
Because they wrote the majority of the songs? If not for Bernie, Randy , they never would have a band to write for. If not for Walsh and Felder they wouldn't have successfully put out Long Run.
All you Frey & Henley haters...when Meisner was going through his health problems after being rushed to the ER, it was Frey & Henley who paid his medical bills.
Just because of the documentary people think there was animosity with Randy - the only person who they really hate is Felder. You're right - I read it more than once that Frey paid for Randy's medical bills.
They owed him at least that much after what they did to him, plus it was so publicized it made them look good, throwing shade on Randy, again. He never said a bad word about any of them, but what he did do is take responsibility for himself and his own actions. How much more ethical, mature, and upstanding can one be than that? I say kudos to you Meis! ❤❤❤
Glenn Frey was a dick. But the Eagles wouldn’t be the Eagles without him. He was the catalyst that created the band’s sound and was the visionary. The other three fell in line. Every catalyst can also cause the demise of the very thing that it creates. That’s Glenn Frey.
And that was the problem when it came to Glen. 4 men created the Eagles...Glen Frey, Bernie Leadon, Randy Meisner, Don Henley. They all signed a contract that made them equal partners. It was suppose to be each was suppose to has 2 songs each on the albums. There was not suppose to be a boss. They all were suppose to have equal say. The other three weren't suppose to be of lesser value and fall in line. They were suppose to be of equal value. Till the contract was signed and the band was created. After a while the two gods decided they were of more value. I said then let the two gods go out on stage as the Eagles and play Hotel California and Witch Woman, Already Gone, and the other songs without the other 3 guys and see how much of a value they are. None of them could get up high like Randy Meisner did. Even though Timothy Schmidt can sing the high notes he cannot get up in the high notes like Randy Meisner. That's why they could not sing Take It To The Limit. No one can sing that song but Randy. Not even Vince Gil as much as I love his singing. Once the band started getting big Glen Frey and Don Henley became the dictators. Bernie, Felder and Randy called it the Don and Glen show. I said walk off the stage and let the gods sing all the songs without the rest of the band. After all no one was suppose to fall in line under Frey and Henley. They were suppose to be equal partners. When they lost Randy, Bernie, Felder the Eagles lost the touch.
Glenn may have been a dick but he could sing! He sung that song Lying Eyes and it sure hit home with me! So much talent! Also loved Randy, his vocals made the songs come alive! Best band ever! Miss them!
Kelly Rider FACT! He was better looking, had the best voice, co-wrote and sang their best-selling and most popular song prior to Hotel California, and was the fans' favorite.
Randy left even though the Eagles were at their peak Meisner wasn't feeling it and the huge ego's of Frey & Henley became too much for him so he simply decided to leave the group after 6 years with them. Perhaps it may had saved his life that would've took a turn for the worse had he stayed. Truly a great vocalist who penned such beautiful songs during his time with them made him a major player in the band.
I still can't understand why Glenn would react the way he did. Randy told him he had a fever and the flu, and he could not sing Take It To The Limit. But Randy insisted. I mean, what a jackass he was. He can't understand when someone is sick and can't perform? Hell, sing another song; it doesn't have to be that one.
That's what the fans wanted. Meisner may have felt bad & unconfident 'but the show must go on'! But Frey disrespected him & that's what happened. Frey should've treated him more w kid gloves, instead of losing such a talent!
He had already sung TITTL earlier in the concert, but Glenn wanted Randy to do it for the encore song, and he just didn't feel up to it! Also, I've heard, from I don't remember where, that Randy was choking Glenn, not fist fighting. That he had to be pulled off of him! Sounds more realistic, as every member, at one time or another, wanted to choke the crap outta him!
@@candybell6049no they definitely wouldn't play the same song twice in one concert. Where the heck did you hear that or did you just make that up? Lol singing the same song twice in one concert, dumbest thing I heard in a while
What’s telling is the text being flashed in the video of the various artists Randy played with. He saw himself as a background vocalist. Why didn’t he go out and start his own band and make himself a lead singer? Because he wasn’t a leader. And there’s nothing wrong with that. I think someone was talking in his ear to demand more of a role in the band and the tension was too much for him.
There's seem a unique style of the music they played. It's not a rock n it's surely not a country song but a combination of rock-country that made them great for all times n it was devastated to hear that this group is getting old as times goes. I would wish to the deserters not to break apart or sought a selfish gain to deter the name eagles from its humble beginning.
He mentioned Joe Cocker. Why isn't Joe in the R&R Hall of Fame? Linda Rondstadt isn't a Rocker but she's in it. Joe took a Beatles song that didn't do well to number #1!
Frey had problems with many members of the band and maybe the most with himself. Don't like him. Like Randy the most of all and the others were good and friendly.
@Jimmy Ramone - they all drank. glenn was an egotistical bully. if you listen to the interview again and listen to how randy answers the questions, he was bullied out of the band. glenn and don bullied bernie leadon and don felder out of the band too. they all had equal shares in the eagles corporation that is why glenn and don wanted them out. the remaining members are essentially contractor players and do as they are told.
Jimmy Ramone/ Wood Butcher. Have Frey and Henley ever brought up doing drugs with minors? Frey pushed Meisner to sing the high notes of Take it to the limit, a difficult song to sing live, day after day. They all drank, as you see in a rare video that has escaped Frey's jealous eyes, of a live performance of Witchy woman, they are all drunk and drugged yet all except Frey play brilliantly.
It’s 2023 & Randy Meisner is still my favorite Eagle , wherever he is I hope he still knows how much his fans KNOW how important he is, the Eagles would just not had been as great as the became without him .

That's if the Eagles toured again. I will not go to another Eagles show without Fingers. A band should be a members are equal parts and shared revenue, not I should get more than you ala Henley and Frey or James Dio in Dio.
+yobpel a well u dont know a single meaning about the band members and a band leader jerk
uncleelmer Randy had a breakdown and is in treatment for mental issues
It will never happen. Don Felder will never work with Don Henley for love or money. Randy is too sick to ever work again. It's over.
I prefer the Randy, Felder, henley ,walsh and frey lineup.this bunch did the hotel california album..The Eagle at its best.
Thank you so much for this series, Loved it !!! I would love to hear the entire hour and a half.... Maybe some day .
Funny how the original members who left the band all had problems with Frey. So, who was the real problem?
Glen had the responsibility of steering the ship ....
He took over the responsibility
Bernie Leadon quit because of Glenn Frey.
Randy Meisner quit because of Glenn Frey.
Don Felder was fired because of Glenn Frey.
The Eagles broke up because of Glenn Frey.
And Henley was just as bad if not worse. Frankly, I pretty much stopped listening to them after Bernie Leadon left; with Joe Walsh and On the Border the band pretty much went in a totally different direction.
Glenn Frey was an ass, the above proves it !
Glenn Frey was an A.H.
God blessed Randy with one heck of a voice. Fry & Henley were ...ok.
Best singer the eagles ever had
LMAO.....you're crazy. Don Henley is the best
Lol. Well depends on how you define best.
@@jasonraczkowski6001 In your opinion.
Velton Mead. 👍 No Felder no 'rock' Eagles. Just a country band (a good one because of Leadon)
They wanted Randy but he was in no fit state health wise, the only one not asked was Felder.
I saw the tour and up until Walsh came on it was pretty mediocre to be honest which was sad because I saw them in '75 and they were one of the best bands I've seen live and I have seen a hell of a lot!
Randy was really ill in the hospital at the time Hell froze over. Glenn and Don H. paid his hospital bills for him.
Renee - KingsDaughter history of the Eagles is on Netflix if you have an account. Definitely worth watching!🤟
@@renee-kingsdaughter5584 - LOL ... some Eagles fan ...

Read Don Felders book."When Hell Freezes Over" gives you a lot of insight of how life was with The Eagles, they were like a dysfunctional family.
What a great loss,
Thanks for this interview.
Agreed. He carried the rhythm section and had no idea how talented he was. He made it look effortless. True prodigy.
Randy Meisner love him
Without Randy The Eagles sounded like a bad Don Henley Album and Glenn didnt help things unable to control himself and acting like a child.
@Raymond Spiers I agree 100%. 👍👍👍
Thanks for getting that interview it put everything in perspective.
Awesome Randy
Don in his book called Glenn frey and Don Henley "The Gods" i personally think Felders solo Guitar playing in the Eagles was the best ever Guitar Solo
Actually, I think it was "the gods" with a small "g."
Was rated number one on MTV's list of duets & solos. The best~ you've not heard anything else like it since have you? 💕💯
Randy was great. Timothy Schmidt fit in nicely as well and they continued to make good music with him.
The music was great with Randy! It was still good with Timothy. Just not the same! IMO
They all had their dark side . Most famous bands are imprisoned by fame ,locked in hotels and studios together eventually forming alliances and turning on each other . Their music is what we should be remembering them for
I loved the Eagles forevermore ❤
Principles before personalities 👍
Like Red Skelton said "you can always tell a Texan, you just can't tell them much" 💕💯
I’m from East Texas about ten Miles from Linden, TX. This isn’t true at all
Walsh should be an accomplice because he should’ve defended his former members instead of swimming in alcohol.
nice job John...enjoyed that!
Randy so sad about what happened to you and how your voice is now take care
Seems like Glenn Frey had some temper issues because he also threatened to do bodily harm to Don Felder as well.
Bernie Leadon also who had rows with Frey, he walked out and left one day after pouring a pint of beer over Frey's head.
Glenn was front and center with the conflicts involving Leadon, Meisner, and Felder. Where I come from, that’s called a pattern.
WOW So Frey & Henley were innocent....So that's why Frey Bragged how he fucked Felder out of Money on the Hell freezes over tour. Get your facts straight Fan-girl
cynthia reynolds do you think Paul is dead too?
@@cameronhasko8870 - LOL, good one!!
i think glen fry was a very talented musician but i also think he was extremely arrogant and self centered and hard to get along with!
Love listening to Randy's interviews, but all that stuff floating across the screen, was very distracting. I scrolled down so I could listen to the interview, without watching the video.
Ha! That's exactly what I thought...so I scrolled down then saw your comment!
same!
Yeah i was about to write the same comment when i saw yours. It's not only distracting, it's dizzying too!.
Glenn seemed to fight with every band member.
Ye! Especially when power and money were the point of it all
He and Henley were riding in lemon and getting personal message therapists for the entire family( theirs) and chefs and what not.
It was his band
Rubbish
Love to hear more
I agree, Felder's book is a great read.
Interview in Louisville, KY, 1975 Don Henley told Rolling Stone Mag., "1 for all, all for1" about the Eagles.....
Loved that 2nd solo album Randy! Never heard the 1st
I like it when people say " you say things that you really dont mean to say"
Yes you DO mean to say it, when you're angry or you've had enough, your true feelings come out!
Believe whatever you want. That isn't always true. Alcohol is a lot of horrible things, and it isn't a truth serum.
I so wish he hadn't left the band.
It is a fact that during several medical conditions that Randy Meisner had over the years, Frey made himself available and financially helped Meisner with medical expenses.
tubeyouall2
It was a single time.
@ I second that!
Randy was riddled with ulcers at that point, and Frey didn't care. He probably caused them.
Same old story, two ended up dominating the band, success-greed, Henley Frey wanted-deserved a lot more than the 20% ea from their original contract.
right. they were writing the lion's share of the songs/hits.
plasticweapon. Lyrics to musical tracks they milked from others.
Because they wrote the majority of the songs? If not for Bernie, Randy , they never would have a band to write for.
If not for Walsh and Felder they wouldn't have successfully put out Long Run.
A contract was signed at the beginning do they mean nothing now?
Glen was a Bully.
Too Many Hands rocks.
@@cynthiareynolds3432 - Frey was feeling guilty.
Lynn Turman. It doesn't change anything they did to screw him up in the first place.
They could bloody afford it!
Eagles were great. You can miss me with that "the" though.
G an what?
Name of the band was "Eagles", not "The Eagles"
Didn’t his son Deacon leave the band?
Glenn may have been a dick but he could sing! He sung that song Lying Eyes and it sure hit home with me! So much talent! Also loved Randy, his vocals made the songs come alive! Best band ever! Miss them!
They were all jealous of Randy.. FACT
Peggy Sullivan I don’t think so
Kelly Rider
FACT!
100% correct, Peggy. Randy was the total package.
I agree with Lisa. Randy was the total package.
Other stories are that Randy was bad hungover and didn’t have the flu and Glenn was pissed at him for being sub par during such a big tour.

Greater Guangxi Well said!
Schmidt didn't seem like he had an ego
Zeb doz. 🤣 !
Where can I hear the whole thing?

It must have been hilarious. Two little guys fighting who couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding.
Betty Jackson LOL...
Though the long run sold well you could tell it was more forced and not flowing.
Can you restate that in English?
I'm dizzy from the moving graphics.
He mentioned Joe Cocker. Why isn't Joe in the R&R Hall of Fame? Linda Rondstadt isn't a Rocker but she's in it. Joe took a Beatles song that didn't do well to number #1!
Why ? Because the RHOF is a joke.
With a Little Help from my Friends was never released as a single, so how can you say it didn’t do well
Are you kidding? Linda was the quintessential early rocker chick. Nobody could touch her voice in the 60's and early 70's.
Mad Dogs alone should make him HOF-worthy, one of the best R&R albums and tours of all time.
Imran Atheist Former-Muslim A Beatles song that didn't do well? It was on Sgt. Pepper, which DID WELL. NO tracks from Pepper were released as singles.
The true talent of the new Eagles will be new tunes not all old .
And the band started because of Glenn Frey.
Kandelise Kandle. Spider waiting for prey.
Randy made a mistake. He probably regretted it.
Frey had problems with many members of the band and maybe the most with himself. Don't like him. Like Randy the most of all and the others were good and friendly.
His drinking problem had alot to do with it. I wonder why he didn't bring it up.
Yes and I would say him and Joe Walsh trashed many a hotel!
They all drank and did drugs.
Frey punched others as well
@Jimmy Ramone - they all drank. glenn was an egotistical bully. if you listen to the interview again and listen to how randy answers the questions, he was bullied out of the band. glenn and don bullied bernie leadon and don felder out of the band too. they all had equal shares in the eagles corporation that is why glenn and don wanted them out. the remaining members are essentially contractor players and do as they are told.
