Randy did not want to be a front guy and was one of the reasons he left the group. When the song hit one well, rhe group will ha e to play it every show and he was a humble guy some of us are like that
Saw Randy & Eagles do this in concert in '76 at Minneapolis concert. This song was obviously a highlight of their show as they saved it for the encore. I was waiting for it throughout the concert and it was so gratifying to finally hear it, and see Randy sing, at the end. A cherished memory. So good to be an old guy and to have witnessed so much great music throughout the the late '60s and early '70s.

Randy is one of the most underrated tenors ever. He wasn’t comfortable taking center stage & was very self conscious that he might not hit the high notes night after night and was bullied by Henley and Frey for not wanting to sing it sometimes. He eventually walked away from the Eagles leaving his share behind. So sad.
Randy’s voice was never underrated. That’s such a silly thing to say about the best voice in the biggest band in the seventies. I brought my albums to my friends’ houses, because that was how we shared our music.

In fairness to Henley and Frey, the Eagles put themselves through more pressure than most bands I’ve ever seen, to sound as close to the record as possible every night they play, and this was in the 70s. Imagine what it is now. There’s a thing called the Circle of Fear that they do, where they stand in a circle backstage and rehearse the songs vocally. The old Seven Bridges Road video is a great example of it. There’s no hiding any kind of idiosyncrasies in that kind of environment. Randy’s self consciousness may have been rightfully warranted, but he also knew what he signed up for when he took the job.

I'm a great Meisner fan, and have always felt their sound diminished some after Randy's departure. And if that sounds like a dig at Tim Schmidt, it isn't, because there are fairly few singer/bassists who would've been anything other than a joke in taking Randy's spot. Tim was pretty much best case as a replacement. RIP, Randy.

I was definitely fortunate to see Randy sing with the Eagles on they’re Hotel California Tour. That was his last tour with them . When he sang this song he got the biggest standing ovation of the night. And he also sang the long version which he didn’t always do because it was tough for him to hit those notes every show…thanks for the music Randy..👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

I was heartbroken when Randy left the Eagles, and I am heartbroken at his passing. I always loved him and never forgot him. He was already an established musician by the time the Eagles began, having played in Rick Nelson's Stone Canyon Band, and Poco. Randy's voice was that of an angel. Everyone should also take a listen to his solo albums too. I will forever remember Randy's beautiful harmonies as well. Thank you so much Fil. Whatever happens in this World, "Take It To The Limit" will always be Randy Meisner's song. The man was just pure vocal talent. I saw The Eagles live in 1977 at the old Empire Pool, Wembley on their Hotel California Tour and they played this song during the show. Made the hairs stand up on my wallet! And all the vocals were done without in - ear monitors because that technology didn't exist.
I don't think we will see or hear another like Randy. Thank you Fil for showing us why this performance is so good. Thank you Randy Meisner, may you Rest In Peace sir.
I saw them on the same tour in Orlando... my first concert (where I learned I was allergic to marijuana!) and it remains one of the most magical ever. Listening to this sends me whooshing backwards to when I was 16-years old. Regarding idiots editing the audios to make them more "perfect," thank the Universe we have the originals on vinyl, tapes, and cds. "Remastered" takes on a depressing tone, doesn't it? I hope people will upload UN-RETOUCHED audios to UA-cam, labeling them as such. We don't need "perfection." We need (im)PERFECTION!

This is the Hotel California tour. This is in Washington DC. in March 1977. This is 5 months before the tour ended.
I too saw this tour in San Antonio Texas...blew everyones doors off.

Such a miraculous combination of creativity, talent, and total commitment to the music. It is a testament to the Eagles that their songs still give me chills, even after having heard them hundreds of times. The best.
I’m in my seventies and believe it, or not, I have played this song at least once a week since I was in my twenties. I would play it on my car cassette player on my journey to and from work every day. As you can tell I never get tired of listening to Randy’s amazing rendition of this great song. Thank you for breaking this down and your appreciation of what a brilliant singer Randy was. Also, how brilliant the Eagles were with their harmonies. I’m in the U.K. and only got to see the Eagles once on their Hell Freezes Over tour, unfortunately by then Randy had left, so I never got to hear him sing live. Rest in peace Randy, you were truly loved by me and all your fans ❤
I have listened to either Eagles Live, or Greatest Hits 1971-1975, EVERY NIGHT in bed, from the time I've had the ability to play audio recordings on my own. I love them more than any other band in the world. I've been fortunate enough to see them live twice, but never with Randy. I am so grateful to be human and have ears when I listen to this.

Don’t forget the band
Randy gets little recognition for his incredible contribution to the harmonies. If you isolate his vocals from the harmonies, you can hear how huge he contributed to the harmony sound. "Take it Easy" and "Already Gone" and "Witchy Woman" and other songs feature Randy Meisner's brilliance.
He got lots of recognition.

Randy was also the voice in “Midnight Flyer”! Love that song also!

Randy’s vocals are one of the reasons my favorite Eagles album is One Of These Nights. For me it was the pinnacle of their harmonies due in large part to Randy. His falsetto on the fade-out of Take It To The Limit is absolutely insane. His vocals are also all over the harmonies and chorus of One Of These Nights, the song wouldn’t have been the same without him. Don Henley’s high vocals in the song are incredible as well. Don Felder’s warm guitar tone also complemented their vocals so well.
It’s crazy that their videos are being auto tuned, it’s sacrilegious. To see them playing so freely and happily is the cherry on top of this video. The smile Glenn flashes after Randy’s vocal climax gives us a hint of their happiness despite the acrimony that they were famous for. There will never be another band that sounds like the Eagles with Randy Meisner.
Thankfully some of their live performances has been captured in Eagles 1976 Live at The Forum (Los Angeles) album.

Love your comment, I agree 100%. I also have their live album Live at the Forum too, which I got back in 1980. That album captures a sound that can never be replicated today. A true treasure.👍☮️

Of all the concerts I've seen in my life the eagles doing this song is one of the most memorable. How he held a note was amazing.
There is always something warm and comforting about his voice, a special vocalist who had amazing range and had the ability to sound soft and also powerful.
The Eagles practiced their harmony, without instruments, constantly. That’s why they sounded so great. Randy Meisner was a great singer/song writer and was eventually under-appreciated by Glenn Fry and Don Henley. I liked them better as a band when Randy was with the group. RIP Randy. You are missed!
Timothy B. Schmidt is a great talent but I 100% agree that the Eagles were better with the incomparable Randy Meisner. I thought it was a bit blasphemous for them to perform this song without him in a lower key.

I saw the Eagles in 2003 at that Palace of Auburn Hills, (old Detroit Pistons home), this was performed with Glenn Fry on lead vocal, and as much as Glenn was an essential Eagle, the song sounded wrong. And of course Don Felder was missing, so the whole show, while competent, left me somewhat empty.
They probably felt threatened by his talent...
At the show I was at he held that highest note for over 30 seconds. It was the most pure, pitch perfect and blissful note ever....EVER...

My wife and i were in the car and i told her Randy Meisner had died. She was never really into the Eagles so i put this song on. After, said it is one of the most beautiful voices she ever heard. It really is. What a performance !!!

Love the Eagles, especially when Randy was a member. Such a great, unique voice and incredible harmonies. Much of my guitar playing was based on their sound, and his bass playing was elegant. RIP Randy.
Randy would fret and worry about hitting that note at the end...and drive the rest of the guys crazy with this worry.
Then he does it, and the crowd RICHLY rewards him, (screaming and cheering,) with the band looking at each other, then Randy...in a "I told you so" kind of way...so sweet, and what a sweet talent, man he was.

Randy had a lot of anxiety over this song. He didn’t want to sing it often…I can see why. I had NO idea they were this consistent. On of my fav bands growing up and I still listen to them often. Great analysis.
These guys could harmonize like no other. Them singing seven bridges road acapella is a treat. It is beautiful when Don Henley put's his vocal right up close to Randy;s pitch is gold.

A great talent that landed in a place where he was welcomed and accepted as a peer. It was evident he was thrilled to be a part of a great group of musicians... He was home!
The Eagles were - and remain - one of my favorite bands of all time. Each member is legendary in his own right, and together they will never be matched again. (Yeah, that’s a dig at what passes for talent today.)
There is an acapella group that covered “Seven Bridges Road” and did it very well. Home Free is the group - definitely with a look!

I’ve listened to this song a million times since its release when I was just in high school. And every single time, I literally get goosebumps. IMO Randy was the heart of the Eagles. Randy Meisner is an underrated bassist and vocalist.
Great assessment, The Eagles strove for perfection both in the studio and in live performances, that’s why nobody even comes close to them. The first time I was privileged to see them in April ‘77 on the Hotel California tour in the then Wembley Arena, I was absolutely stunned by their performance. I simply couldn’t believe they were that good live. That original impression was only reinforced over the next thirty seven times I’ve been blessed by seeing them, every single performance was as close to perfection as humanly possible, every aspect, being the vocals, guitar playing, bass, drums, strings, horns etc. The amount of talent in this band has never been equalled, let alone bettered, there’s simply no one to touch them. Take it to the limit has always been my personal favourite song of all time, and without disrespecting any other lineup, that version with Glenn, Don, Randy, Felder and Walsh was the Zenith of their Fabulous career. Great appreciation and assessment from you too, thanks for posting this classic clip of The Eagles at their very best, Rest in peace Randy, you’ve given me SO much enjoyment over the years, many think that he had the best voice out of all the Eagles, and I find it difficult to disagree. Thanks again.
You can thank Henley for that. He’s taken heat over the years for overly striving for absolute perfection in recording sessions but that translated into the incredibly tight harmonic sound replicated effortlessly during live performances

The ending of this song in this live version is so utterly "Balls to the Wall" that it makes me tear up, not cuz it's sad , it isn't really, but simply it is SO emotionlly naked and true. I feel this way more and more as I get older, and as WE ALL get older.

One of the issues that led to Randy leaving the Eagles, was this song. Randy, wasn't hitting that high F4 with ease, it was difficult for him, and knowing that that song was going to be a staple of every performance put a lot of pressure on him. He hated singing that song and toward the end, had a head-butting incident with Glenn Frey where in Randy didn't want to sing Take it to the Limit, and Glen went off on Randy, and insisted he had to, because the audience expected them to perform that song; he had to do it. Yes, it seemed Randy always managed to hit that F4, but it wasn't a walk in the park for him, and the pressure of not being able to hit it, and the constant touring along with the internal conflicts within the band at the time, proved to be more stress than Randy wanted to put up with; so eventually, he left the band.
As for me and my feelings about Randy's singing, that high F4 always sounded like the call of an Eagle flying high above. To me, it was like the representative sound of the band's spirit...the call of the Eagle, loud, bold, full of life. Just my personal impression. RIP Randy, you certainly will be missed by so many of us.

Not gonna lie....at the beginning of the video, when the music started, I broke down crying. It's insane how music can transport you somewhere else instantly. I remembered walking into my brother's house and he was playing bass to this song. He definitely loved the eagles, also, loved playing bass along with their 2nd album "Desperado". Sure miss my brother! But anyhow, the emotions it stirs....

Whenever I hear the Eagles perform this I have to catch my breath. Such a vocal masterpiece. Now with Randy's passing it just tears me apart. Randy's vocals on Nothin to Hide with Poco is another great example of Randy's beautiful voice. Poco's harmonies are amazing as well. I think Randy joining back up for the Legacy recordings was so good for him.

"Take It To the Limit", one of the Eagles best loved songs, was always saved as an encore performance. Randy would throw out these stunning high notes at the end of the song, and it brought audiences to their feet, night after night, and then they would be heard cheering him on. His consistency on these performances of this difficult, but perfect song, were absolutely incredible.

His vocals on this song is stuff of legend. When you realize he’s also the high harmonies on many other early tunes, you’re just left in awe.
When I was a little kid (like 5 or so) I always thought to myself ‘is there a female singer in the group?’ Especially in this song and the background vocals on One of These Nights.
But no, it was just the great vocals and high harmonies of Randy Meisner.
I live in western Nebraska, not far from where Randy was born, so I am a bit biased. I also understand that the pressures of the road life and singing this song at the end of a concert when your vocal chords are tired were things that Randy complained about and contributed to his leaving the band. Still, his performance is undeniably incredible! So if you look back at promotional photographs of the band and see Randy wearing his yellow and green Frank Implement T-shirt with the John Deere logo on it, you will get a sense of the humble Nebraska boy who never let his level of talent or fame disconnect him with home.

I was born and raised in Scottsbluff and while graduating from Gering, his son Dana graduated from Mitchell the same year. My deceased brother-in-law was one of Dana's best friends and they used to drum together. I too worked at Frank Implement in the parts department for a few years until I made my way to Phoenix. I meet a couple friends every Friday night to karaoke and when Randy passed, I got the balls to sing Take It To The Limit in his memory. By the reaction of the crowd, I represented the song well; some saying I nailed it. I've heard it thousands of times and when I found out I could hit the high notes, it was always his songs I sang. A friend of mine mentioned One More Song, and embarrassingly enough I had never heard it. I spent about 2 hours figuring out the chords and learning the words and now have made it one of the songs I sing at Open Mic nights around Phoenix now. He was truly a gifted musician and above all, humble.
@@JohnJohnson-nm4qj I also enjoy karaoke and often sing in Scottsbluff (including later tonight), but my voice can't do justice to the top two or three notes that Randy could in his prime. You might also like "Midnight Flyer" which Randy sang lead vocals on. It was not a hit, but I enjoy it.

One of my favourite vocalists performing one of my favourite songs. So sad to find that he's gone, and with so little mention anywhere. Had Fil's video not appeared in my feed I wouldn't have known.
I heard it on the national news broadcast the day of his passing but only that day. There have been a number of tributes that I've seen on UA-cam but that's maybe because I search for their music. And it wasn't like he was a huge name big star like Prince or Linda Ronstadt or Sinead O'Connor who passed within a few days of each other. No doubt he was a major massive talent from his day but he just did not have that top billing marguee position or the longevity that others have had. It's getting harder to keep up because so many of these older greats from the 60s 70s 80s and even 90s are moving on without us.

Randy had such a great voice that fit so well with the Eagles sound. This song is one that made me an Eagles fan. So sad that squabbles made him leave. Thank you for honoring his memory Fil.
I remember a story that Randy left because of this song actually. Don and Glenn insisted that Randy sing this song at every show (understandably - it was a huge hit for them), and Randy resisted, saying that he needed to rest his voice after each performance - the most he could sing that song was once or twice a week, not every night. But Don and Glenn kept pushing. I remember hearing a live performance of this song where Randy definitely was not having a good voice day, and he struggled. It would be ironic for him to get driven out by his own song.

There was one show that Randy recalled as having performed Take It To The Limit as the encore (which was one night that Randy didn’t want to do the song, period), but a review of the same show says that the song was actually the final song of the entire show, not the encore, and Glenn, more than the other guys - surprising, including Henley - demanded that the song be performed. I’ve heard that Frey and Meisner literally came to blows backstage before the show.

Marketing wants to make sure that natural genius won't stand out against background mediocrity. If you never hear genius, it's a lot easier to sell mediocrity. Incoming performers may not ever know that they can and should strive for greatness.

Here is a hypothesis: it makes it easier for software to track where it is being used. It is quite difficult to track a live vocal performance. When the pitch is always accurate and consistent, the pattern is easier for the software to match.

Amazingly beautiful singer with an incredibly gentle touch. Gorgeous sublime singing elevated by the Eagles' special harmonic sounds that just go right to your heart. You can't help but shed a tear at the beauty, pain, and power that Randy conveys as the song reaches higher and higher levels of emotion.

When Randy sings "...and you can't find the door...", the way he vocalizes 'door' has faithfully given me chills ever since I first heard the song as a very young girl, when it first hit the airwaves...

The nostalgia of it all slays me. Growing up in Southern California in the 70s The Eagles defined so much of that moment and place, and always will.
