Congrats on being able to playtest the game. I've always love Hyper Light Drifter and have been waiting Breaker for many years (it was delayed many times). Finally some gameplay of this game :0
I think a demo would have done this game wonders for feedback purposes. The mixed reviews are going to turn a ton of people away and unfortunately they'll probably never stick around to see what Heart Machine is really capable of. I've been having so much fun, and can't wait to watch this game's journey
alternate title: Race parries everything for 22 minutes (trying) jokes aside, glad to see your take on this game! i’ve been anticipating it ever since it’s been announced, and it’s looking really fun!! (and i’m looking forward to parrying lots of sht too only to get completely humbled in the process lmao)
Great video! I'm excited to play this game myself later on today. The idea that this game is big enough to impact the genre and add more RPG elements is certainly interesting. I've tried a couple modern roguelikes that have RPG mechanics (and extraction mechanics, shout-out to Quasimorph) but what Hyperlight Breaker is doing is so important and has the potential to reach a huge audience. Anyways rambling over, great vid, thanks Race and Kami!
It's very raw, but there are so many good ideas and you can tell that the devs have big plans. Very cool game so far. Can't wait to see how it develops.
I always loved hyper light drifter, made me sob a bit. Excited to see the future of this one! It looks good so far although I am hearing some rough stuff about the pc port right now, thats early access for you.
I loved watching your breaker vods. I hope this will become a semi regular stream game. Maybe once a week? Also, after you beat your first run, I'd suggest that you always sell your entire loadout when you generate a new world. Otherwise beating the game becomes trivial and imo it's much more fun to have to get a loadout in the same world that you beat the bosses.
I've never played a game where I was able to identify so many things that frustrate me, while also still being so in love with it like this one. They've really captured lightning in a bottle here, they just gotta polish the bottle a bit.
Glad I'm not the only one who thought it was haaaard out the gate. And I was confused about how medkit accumulation worked, but I guess it really is a thing to be horded. I'm liking it overall, though, minus a few gamefeel things that I think they can tighten up. Would definitely love to see more videos on this one.
I feel like me and this game would get along like a housefire. Love me a good parry mechanic. and finally, something where Race has skill issues and isn't just an infaliable uber pro playing on a difficulty that invalidates all the things I love.
I've played ror2 for 800 hours and I'll put another 800 in no question, but this is a nice change of pace, you mentioned the fear factor, and yeah, first couple of rez's I was scared for my life! Great game, I hope the mixed/negative reviews of the game don't bring it down..
Awesome vid! I'm sure you noticed sometime after but just in case, you can surf over water with your hoverboard! (as long as you have the stam. LOL) Aloha!
man ive been so exited for this game! Cant wait to get my mitts on it. Sad to see most peoples bad reviews are just its early access and not much content and like yeah :( thats what early access is
I loved Hyper Light Drifter, and I’m waiting for early access to progress a bit more to iron out some of the larger problems I’ve read in the steam reviews, but I’ll absolutely be trying it at some point, I hope they release a demo when it’s out of early access.
I want your opinion on this, because my only worry is that runs might feel samey. I struggle to square the circle of having both enough variety within a run and between different runs. Since runs can be very long and the game wants to give you new stuff that isn't just what you have but with bigger numbers but if you see a lot of cool and interesting shit within a run you're probably going to run into the same things between runs. I'm not saying it's impossible look at games like caves of qud, dwarf fortress, literally any traditional rougelike new and old, those games have very very long long runs with tense make it or break it moments and manage to feel insanely different from run to run and within a run. But those games sacrifice simplicity of design with massive complex almost obtuse mechanics that harbor on simulations, and those sort of mechanics cannot work within a fast paced action game at least not directly in the combat. I love what they're doing here and like you said yourself trying to square the circle and trying something new is how genre defining pieces are created. I'll have to actually play the game now that it's in early access to give any more judgment but as someone who has already played the game for a bit, what do you think?
hm, I think as of right now the runs aren't super different from one another, especially if you like to use the same weapon for another type. You can just technically grind out the same perks you want also. But it's just another example of something I just want to see grow with the game, with more stuff put into it it could definitely improve that replayability. I'll probably get a few days to a week of playable content out of this as is before I wait for a content update
The stats system math of this games reminds of RoR2, is quite interesting, im having a lot of fun playing, the game is punishing and hard, and ofc in that aspect need polish, but is still challenging funny
I've been enjoying it a lot, and I'm sure I'm going to enjoy it more once mouse sensitivity options are added in. God knows I am not a controller aimer haha The devs did confirm that sens and performance fixes are their highest priority, and will be coming out soon though🙏
I feel like the drifter universe has such wide appeal from the first kinda zelda-like drifter to the exploratory and parkour runner of solar ash and now breaker it looks so good. I did originally want to leave the EA alone for some more content but race is really making me want to change that
Really hoping this game turns out good, I loved these dev's previous 3D platformer. Seems a little intense and unforgiving gameplay wise for me personally though
My friend with a really good computer has been struggling to squeeze frames out of the game. I probably wont buy unless they severely optimize the game
Looks pretty good actually. You could just go into a few runs to focus on learning parrying even if you end up dying from it. Also, from your gameplay, I think there are attacks that you feel must be parried that you could dodge with a good dash.
When I say “I have to parry that” it’s not necessarily the only option, but it’s the option I want lol, I don’t think there’s been an attack I haven’t dodged yet with a dash
The way you describe it as being more difficult and less power fantasy/kill everything reminds me of dead cells if it was 3d. Similar case of being rogue-like/lite but being largely skill and preference based
I got this game because of loving hyperlight drifter, and woooow its so hard. I think part is understanding the game mechanics, it's good to extract, and dont rush to a bossfight. But like so far its definitely at least as hard as my experience with Elden ring lol :')
Kinda sucks it’s getting lots of negative steam reviews cus people expect early access games to reflect closer to a finished game than unfinished nowadays. Super excited for when it fully releases though
My only problem with the game so far is the lack of variety. There's only 3 biomes, only (if im not mistaken) 5 random events, only 5 different bosses (at least that I've seen), the different structures on the map do appear often enough that you can get used to it as well. But it's a really good game and has a lot of potential! These are also very simple and safe updates to make imo. New structures, new enemies, new bosses, etc. Just more of the same will help a lot here
This looks very fun but also very deceptively hard, but I'm sure once we get used to the gameplay loop / avoiding damage the difficulty will go down a lot (which is a good thing). Also do your dodges have s?
Feeling like u can die in every fight is a bad thing for a good player, because the only way a game can do that is punish you with things that are out of your control and that is frustating, once you can't improve your gameplay anymore the game shouldn't feel like a random slot machine of death. That ain't fun.
I see what you’re saying but I think that statement is too definitive. Being able to die as a good player can just mean you’re not paying attention or that the level of inputs required from you can be challenging to do perfectly every time
obv i haven’t gotten my hands on the game but would the dodge & parry mechanics be easier on controller? similar to souls-likes EDIT: seems the lack of m&k support answered my question for me
MINIMUM from steam: Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system Processor: 2+ cores, 2.4Ghz+ Memory: 16 GB RAM Graphics: Nvidia GTX 1050/1650 or AMD RX 560 Additional Notes: Specs are for 30 FPS
I haven't played the ROR2 Gearbox update at all. I even uninstalled the game. Should I reinstall it? Are things fine now? Can you somehow revert to the previous version?
i've been playing this game and really like it but there are sooooo many issues with it rn. I hope the future updates can address the issues bc it could be a game that I play a ton if they take it in the right direction
Does the melee feel as satysfying as it feels that it should be? I mean by watching gameplay idk why but i think it looks a bit clunky or off, idk man at least for me maybe its not and playing it isnt as clunky as I see it, hope it doesmt
Hey Race, I’m just curious if you’re played Vellum? It’s a fun 3D roguelike that I feel hasn’t been getting the attention it deserves (probably due to like 0 marketing)
@@RacesVideos hadn’t heard of cubeworld before, but from looking at it a bit I really don’t think so. The artstyle isn’t cubic or pixelated at all, and the gameplay is closer to something like Crab Champions Definitely at least worth checking out the page. I’d be down to gift the game to you if you wanna mess around with it too
@@RacesVideos i think your thinking of veloren its a free community project thats going to be more of a mmo or multiplayer experience similar to cubeworld its still very early in development but as it is a community project anyone can jump in and try to help update it!, i know this isnt super relevant but i have to try and spread the word where at least a little applicable
depends, take a look at the complaints and see if they are things that bother you, like poor optimization and lack of settings. i think the devs said they have a patch coming out this week to address some of those things though
My comment from yesterday about how heart machine lied about the infinite amount of worlds and procedural terrain generation got either deleted or hidden. Did I type something wrong? If not, can you unhide it? I'd also like to add that they did actually mention it once, that the worlds weren't randomly generated in game, but instead are generated before release and then in the game files. Its somewhere on the heart machine tumblr. But you seriously can't expect players to find this when the game is advertised as having "infinite amount of worlds" where "you never see the same world twice" everywhere else.
sorry, I don't think your comment ever sent, no comments auto modded or hidden. I wouldn't hide anything like that either. It definitely feels weird, kinda like a white lie you know is going to be construed the way you think it is when you say it. Idk, while they're not technically wrong I feel like morally I have questions about it and it feels weird. Also this is a question more about Arc Games I guess since they handled marketing. (which btw is gearbox publishing since they renamed I believe)
@RacesVideos I never liked playing Dead Cells much, but I feel that Windblown is doing everything the previous game did right and none of the wrong Though yeah I can see that, the fixed camera angle is very different from the games you seem to like
@@RacesVideos dead cells is a phone/handheld game for me, can't play it on pc. Try it out, maybe you will like it in portable, just like i did (there is a mobile port)
I’m a little worried that the game has a 33% on steam. Hyper light drifter is probably one of my favorite games ever, but I’m a little nervous to try it out.
If you’re nervous no harm in waiting a bit and seeing updates come out, don’t be pressured to buy something just cause it’s new. I have a few hours of gameplay on my twitch vod today if you want to see more of the fights and gameplay loops too
SO many people are just pissed because the game they bought in early access is in early access, or they are too lazy to try to figure out the mechanics the game doesn't shove in your face, OR are just plain misinformation.
Super hyped for this. Probably not going to watch the rest of the video to avoid spoilers, but i appreciate the proffesional opinion at the start and will definitely be keeping my eyes open
Looks like a cool game but i think they should take out the annoying minions from bosses. Really seems to takeaway from aesthetic the fight for gimmicks.
I don't think it makes much sense to look at "roguelites" as some reasonable agglomaration of "space", and consider every comparison within it reasonable. Roguelites, to me, are a slightly stronger definition than "minimalist design". It's more a design philosophy than it is is a "space" or genre. You could design a city-builder roguelite (Against the Storm) and something more similar to Hyper Light Breaker, and both would be valid "roguelites" - but they are almost incomparable. To say "Vampire Survivors is more what people want in easier roguelites" is like saying "I think people who dislike surrealistic paintings would be more interested in movies" - both are ultimately captured by the same base group, but they are constructively incomparable. You seem to take this as a basis for argumentation immediately. You compare Slay the Spire to HLB as if it means anything. Unless you want to make a very fundamental statement I think it does not.
Yeah so I think you're immediately discrediting what someone else is saying without giving yourself a chance to actually soak up the context and understand it, you're strangely projecting that I'm presenting a 'basis for argumentation' all without fully comprehending the thesis of the discussion I've put forth whatsoever, so I'd ask you to take a step back. The design philosophy of roguelites, at least to the average player or consumer, is about breaking down games and creating a more digestible, per-run, replayable experience, which I was hoping was understood. This is understood at least conceptually by many who consume a lot of roguelite content. I suppose it wasn't, but I fault myself for not presenting that basic notion properly in the video. In the same way your example, Against the Storm, could bring a new flavor to this base by introducing the advent of city building, HLB introduced, in my opinion, equally interesting mechanics and run design to the standard formula many roguelites follow that others could then build off of as a standard. Just like Slay the Spire has introduced genre defining characteristics, like I pointed out with the map that you see echoed amongst a good 50% of the strategy roguelikes out in the market, or Vampire Survivors which was so heavily copied it created a sub genre in the roguelite space in itself. The comparison is that A. They're roguelites, and B. they're influential in the space because of specific and innovative design decisions. So yes, it means something. And yes I think in context, comparing difficulty of one of the most popular roguelite styles or tropes in the world, Vampire Survivors screen wipe gameplay, to this game that I think is exceptionally different, is also a valid thing to bring up. If I, a consumer, saw the tag roguelite on the page how would I differentiate the experience from the other most popular roguelites that I enjoy that also share the same tag? I think it's an important part of this game's identity that it does not share with a lot of the genre it's settled itself in. Let people compare things. And I would encourage you to ask next time if you aren't fully grasping someone's point instead of insisting that they're misunderstood and what they're saying doesn't mean anything! It definitely can come off as rude and entitled! I'm not upset with you though, this served as a good way to present this point more thoroughly to others who may be confused. I'm not going to respond to you again if you insist whatever I'm saying is meaningless, have a good one!
@@RacesVideos I found this extremely painful to read. Why am I suddenly your mortal enemy and must I be humiliated at the cost of any reason or logic? I simply disagreed with your basis for comparison. There is a lot of irony in you claiming I refuse to take a step back with this rhetoric of "destroy the opponent at all costs necessary". Yes - almost everything you say here I understand and can be made a point for - but you did not do that. Yes, they are A, roguelites and B, they are influential. An integer is A a mathematical object, as is topological space, both are influential in their respective branches of mathematics, does that mean they are now open for immediate comparison? No. They certainly can be: if you provide the mediating framework to do so. You do not do this however. A very clear example of this to me is the statement "this might not be a game for people who are interested in the easier type of roguelites like Vampire Survivor". How does this differentiate from just saying "this game is harder than most games I played"? What justifies the confinement to roguelites here that sets up these comparisons? There is no "measure of distance", if that makes sense, besides abiding vaguely by the same philosophy.
The mediating framework between an apple and an orange is that they are fruit. And comparatively in this video, I'm talking about fruit. If you're a fruit enjoyer, and a new fruit was unleashed upon the world, why wouldn't I comment on how this new fruit isn't sweet like other fruit that people love like oranges? You're not my enemy, I reacted to what I think is reasonable considering your own actions, I simply told you the way in which you said what you said can definitely come off as rude, entitled, and dismissive for really no reason about a fun little game video and I elected to correct you since you elected to insert your opinion and attempt to correct me about something I'm not wrong about. I'm allowed to compare whatever I want frankly, and can do so with the tool of language, if you're unable to grasp whatever I choose to compare that is not fault I will have to bear. I do not enjoy this conversation though honestly, so I will now stop, but I figured I owed you this much. Again, have a good one.
@@RacesVideos But by your reasoning, why are you yourself not "entitled and rude"? You insert your own opinion and state you are correct, dismissing my perspective as pointless (almost literally in several sentences). My goal was not to dismiss your perspective, it was to simply say I disagree. In what context could I disagree with you where you wouldn't claim it is undermining you? Sure you are allowed to compare, I even understand the merit of the comparison very well: I think the same goes for your apples and oranges analogy. People indeed might gravitate toward different fruits and want to know how to classify them to their needs. My problem is not with that: it is the lack of a meaningful measure you focus on. Apples and oranges have meaningful attributes you can compare, much like you stated: you can compare the sweetness. But in that case you aren't focusing on fruits anymore. You are focusing on a measurable, and constructive attribute that happens to be inherent to fruits: their sweetness. You can of course choose to limit this comparison to just fruits as per the necessity of such a comparison (as you stated: people who enjoy fruits find this meaningful, I can agree there). But a lot of this video comes down to comparing arbitrary attributes in a "space" of fruits that are not valid simply because they are unitied in being fruits. What if I were to make the claim "Apples are better because they are spherical, whereas bananas are less sweet". They surely both are fruits, but the comparison does not make sense. There is no uniform measure between the things in the category just because they belong to that category. If you make sweeping statements like "they changed this" or "they changed that" it ultimately boils down almost entirely to how the viewer perceives this measure subjectively, which is not constructive by design (it's "generalization"). You do make a lot of what I perceive as constructive comparisons after watching the video a bit longer. I just wish that for some of the more sweeping statements there was more backing to the measure you apply - so it does not get lost in vague surface-level interpretation.
But... rougelikes are rpgs, like thats what rougelikes are, rouglike rpg is an oxymoron.
Hey man if you can’t distinguish the difference in what that phrase means I’m not the one who can help you lol
@RacesVideos ... rouglike is a subgenre of rpg, all rouglikes are rpgs

@@RacesVideosthank you!! i watched the rest of the video and saw that. still appreciated! have a good day/night :)
Have you played Furi? It's not a rogue-anything, but it has the same 3d animation style, fun and challenging combat and parry mechanic at its core.
Have you played Ravenswatch? Give it a chance if not. It's a cool and hard roguelike too.
Just more of the same will help a lot here
yeah the bones are definitely good which is why I'm excited about the future of this game
The devs recommend playing this game in co-op, does co-op change anything like difficulty ?
This looks very fun but also very deceptively hard, but I'm sure once we get used to the gameplay loop / avoiding damage the difficulty will go down a lot (which is a good thing).
Also do your dodges have s?
i dont even think its deceptively hard, i think its very much in your face lol. dodges seem to have s yeah
Being able to die as a good player can just mean you’re not paying attention or that the level of inputs required from you can be challenging to do perfectly every time
for me most punishing 3d roguelike is raw metal
the game is sm fun 😭
The music sounds like the other hyperlight games. Do we know if it is still disasterpeace composing the music?
obv i haven’t gotten my hands on the game but would the dodge & parry mechanics be easier on controller? similar to souls-likes
EDIT: seems the lack of m&k support answered my question for me
are those drifter songs in breaker or were those edited in post?
Looks great. Will it come out for ps4?
How is the optimization for the early access, like is it gonna run well on lower spec PC?
Probably not tbh
MINIMUM from steam:
Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
Processor: 2+ cores, 2.4Ghz+
Memory: 16 GB RAM
Graphics: Nvidia GTX 1050/1650 or AMD RX 560
Additional Notes: Specs are for 30 FPS
yeah i shouldnt be really getting 60-80 with a 4080 super but hey lol
I haven't played the ROR2 Gearbox update at all. I even uninstalled the game. Should I reinstall it? Are things fine now? Can you somehow revert to the previous version?
i'd say give it a shot
i've been playing this game and really like it but there are sooooo many issues with it rn. I hope the future updates can address the issues bc it could be a game that I play a ton if they take it in the right direction
yep! the future of this game is something i tend to keep a vigilant watch on
Does the melee feel as satysfying as it feels that it should be? I mean by watching gameplay idk why but i think it looks a bit clunky or off, idk man at least for me maybe its not and playing it isnt as clunky as I see it, hope it doesmt
I never had a problem with it, though there are some animations that last a bit so you have to be careful about committing
Hey Race, I’m just curious if you’re played Vellum? It’s a fun 3D roguelike that I feel hasn’t been getting the attention it deserves (probably due to like 0 marketing)
is that the cubeworld clone?
@@RacesVideos hadn’t heard of cubeworld before, but from looking at it a bit I really don’t think so. The artstyle isn’t cubic or pixelated at all, and the gameplay is closer to something like Crab Champions
Definitely at least worth checking out the page.
@kakllakl ah i am thank you!
So do I buy this game i mean I need a new rougelike
depends, take a look at the complaints and see if they are things that bother you, like poor optimization and lack of settings. i think the devs said they have a patch coming out this week to address some of those things though
Do you have any interest in deckbuilder rougelikes, like Slay the Spire?
yes, theyre fun
Hey Race, is there any chance you could cover Windblown too? It is also in early access, and made by the creators of Dead Cells
well i didnt like dead cells and i didnt like how windblown was more top down, didnt seem my style, im very picky
@RacesVideos I never liked playing Dead Cells much, but I feel that Windblown is doing everything the previous game did right and none of the wrong
Though yeah I can see that, the fixed camera angle is very different from the games you seem to like
@@RacesVideos dead cells is a phone/handheld game for me, can't play it on pc. Try it out, maybe you will like it in portable, just like i did (there is a mobile port)
@langelius I appreciate the well meaning reply but i REALLY don't like it or mobile games lol
@@RacesVideos how about RavenWatch? Did u tried?
BREAKER
I’m a little worried that the game has a 33% on steam. Hyper light drifter is probably one of my favorite games ever, but I’m a little nervous to try it out.
If you’re nervous no harm in waiting a bit and seeing updates come out, don’t be pressured to buy something just cause it’s new. I have a few hours of gameplay on my twitch vod today if you want to see more of the fights and gameplay loops too
@@RacesVideos I'll be sure to check it out! Hyper Light Drifter was one of my top 10's of all time, so I gotta at least see if it's for me
Seems like a lot of the negative reviews are people crying DEI or something. Game's fine
SO many people are just pissed because the game they bought in early access is in early access, or they are too lazy to try to figure out the mechanics the game doesn't shove in your face, OR are just plain misinformation.
Damn still no enforcer run
Super hyped for this. Probably not going to watch the rest of the video to avoid spoilers, but i appreciate the proffesional opinion at the start and will definitely be keeping my eyes open
Hyper Light Drifter is notoriously punishing for new players. I think that Breaker kind of leans into that.
It’s way more punishing, as someone who completed ng+ on drifter it was a walk in the park by comparison
Looks like a cool game but i think they should take out the annoying minions from bosses.
Really seems to takeaway from aesthetic the fight for gimmicks.
Not my favorite boss mechanic either but I still think they’re fun enough
Yeah that beam gun sucks no matter what level, they gotta up the damage on that
I like it for proccing crits for heals but thats about it
I don't think it makes much sense to look at "roguelites" as some reasonable agglomaration of "space", and consider every comparison within it reasonable.
