He's a little rough but he definitely knows his stuff great explanation of the air brakes 60 psi is no good i drive international work star plow trucks
Yeah 60 is about when the alarms start ringing, though it's the lower 20's when the air brakes pop and will stop ya dead. Anyways, howdy fellow plow driver, hope you had a good season, mine is over. We run Volvo 10 yarders, plowing in the winter, paving in the summer.
Tom, I work on international workstar plow trucks. Nothing better than laying under one at 3 am with salt water and AW46 dripping on you changing a hydraulic hose!👍 keep on scraping and stay safe in the storm.
Great Video that Driver knows his stuff 👍. I was able to get an International ProStar 08 model very cheap but no motor. So we squeezed an 07 Cummins 565 pre emission truck engine in. Now I have no Def and no Regen no headaches and lots of horsepower gets the job done!👌
That would've been great for me this week. My Peoplenet died on me Tuesday. It took until this afternoon, Friday, to get my logs and trips sorted out. And the new unit is still not installed. Having to use a truck assigned to a driver who is on vacation. Boy, that guy doesn't know how to pretrip/posttrip his truck...or keep it clean.
I know everyone is surprised by his appearance and clear knowledge of his rig. Most truck drivers know their tractors from front to back, if you're an owner operator you have to, this is this mans business and knowing your tractor means you can convey information to techs over problems or just know how to fix them yourself.
This guy was awesome explaining. Also, it is important to see that at the end of the day what customers who are in business want is a simple, affordable and reliable machine.
He is a smart man going glider....those yearDD 12.7 s were the perfect balance of power and efficiency,he is getting a full 1-2 mpg or more better than a new Tier 4 final emissions truck. When you average 150k a year the difference between 4.2 mpg and 5.2 mpg is huge! He has no EGR to contaminate his motor oil and intake charge,no DPF ,no DOC and no DEF to fill and cause breakdowns . The Detroit is a million mile engine all day long .Great truck and owner. He is so in tune with his truck he floats gears effortlessly, can do it in his sleep I’m sure.
The thing is 5.2 is crap, I have a 99 fld120 with a 1lw cat and have no problem staying above 6. In a newer truck if your not above 7 your doing something wrong.
And now we know the definition of the term “Glider”, excellent information, straight to the point, no missed words, as others have stated he is an honest down to earth kinda guy, and yes he is a true professional is every aspect of the word! Bring him back for other “testing” of the BIG RIGS!
He is a knowable trucker. I'm. Diesel mechanic for a major rental company. I have worked on Freightliners, volvos and peterbilts. Yes the Emissions equipment are getting better but they still have problems and the cost is very expensive. A cummins dpf filter is $2500. Intake and outlet nox sensors $550+ each. SCR catalyst $5000 I'm not kinding have replaced and diag buch if these. The Detroit dd15 afftertreamant systems are a little better in reliability but when it breaks it is a hight repair cost. The Detroit 60 Series is a good pre- Emissions motor it will leak oil though and lot of it but that's 60 series for you.
@@renesantos6786 to be honest are fleet does not have a lot of Volvo d13 so my answer will be based on what I have worked on which will be about 10 d13 engines I have worked on. For the most part there are good engines the most common issues for the Emission system is the after- treatment fuel doser valve module which sends an air and fuel mixture for when a parked regen or active regen is needed to raise the temperatures. I have replaced that module 8 of the 10 d13 engines i have worked on. The main cause for that module to fail is actually the air compressor failing internally sending oil though out the air lines cause the after- treatment fuel doser valve module to plug up with oil. So usual around 400k to 500k that's when the air compressor starts acting up and shoots oil through out the system. That's about it the rest of the after treatment system is pretty good Reliability wise for the most part a few NOX sensors here and there but not that common Volvo did a pretty good job on that engine design. There Cab systems though THATS A DIFFERANT STORY THEY SUCK!
With the subject of big rigs that I know little to nothing about, this guy knows his stuff! I knew nothing about glider kits until this video. Thank you!!
Detroit series 60, as far as I'm concerned best engine on the market. This guy knows his truck, wish all drivers were this knowledgeable, Sad part is all drivers should know all this information
Yes,Series 60 is a Budget motor, meaning easy to maintain, rebuild and operate... Next in Line is the 3406E then the Cummins N-14 for electronic motors- The 855 cummins,3406A-B wre reliable pre electronic
Dan reminds me of my late brother who was also a trucker. Like Dan he too was a great driver and very knowledgeable. I am glad to see that this type of nice guy is still driving our goods all over this great country. Keep it up Dan.
These Freightliner very nice!!! Recently did inspection on bunch of these trucks with 500k miles plus and you will never tell they had that many miles. No oil leaks and clean from rust.
I’m new to your channel but this here is by far one of the best interviews I have ever seen. You definitely asked the right questions for your viewers and Dan gave outstanding answers.
That is one well educated driver. And you don't want to go to California with all that traffic . You will run out of driving hours withing 10 miles lol.
I been around trucks since 92 and I met people that been around trucks long before. And if they don't respect the road or uneducated. Then their time behind the wheel is pointless.
@Aj Cogswell an argument can be made the experience is education. I don't claim to know everything and the second I think I do I need to hang up my keys.
I do local in Los Angeles, area. 100 mile radius. So, don't need a E Log or paper Log Book. But, i do carry a paper log, adviced by DOT officer. I too, like my Cascadia 2014, Detroit DD15, Eaton 10. Its like this guy said, this is my business, i go where the money is, dont over spend, and always be efficient.
Very knowledgeable and well spoken man! Thanks for the great explanations. We need more like him! This was my favorite episode for this segment so far. Plus, it was great to hear just why it is worth going with what is known to be reliable instead of the cool new truck. Thank you for bringing this to us!
@No Body What truth? That computer or phone that you are typing on was brought to you on a truck. Truckers are hard working people that come in every variety under the sun. The bulk of them are good, honest people and dont deserve the crap you are labeling them with. I said you are a troll for the comment you made here and the one you made above about gliders. You obviously are looking for a reaction. It's kind of sad really. Maybe you should go and make a living like the guy in the video, instead of slathering stupid comments on UA-cam videos. Just sayin. Hope you start to build some self confidence brother. Have a good day.
Next time you go to the store to buy food, or clothes, remember every item on every shelf arrived there on a truck. I used to work for AT@T, I sat behind a desk working at a computer for 16 years until they automated my job and let me and nearly 30 other people go. Now I own a simi truck and starting my own logistics company, so while you may think you are so smart, remember just like they are making driver less trucks and cars, someone may be out there writing a program that could take your job from you too.
Flapper your my kinda guy…Nice truck and great info. Your very informative and you’ve helped raise my IQ on which direction I should go when I purchasing my own truck!! Keep on Rollin Brother!!!👍🏾

Before this I had no clue about glider trucks and even though I still don't know much, I learned a lot. Seems to me Dan knows every nut and bolt on his truck. Very knowledgable. This was a good vid.
This is probably the most interesting segment i have watched here. This guy is so knowledgeable and awesome. He needs his own channel or trucking show.
What is important is that he spoke well and made technical explanations easy to understand. There's one thing I wish Andre asked him about and that is the coming storm that is self driving vehicles and how this is going to affect the trucking industry.
@comeatmebro. It's not going to be an instantaneous event certainly but long haul truck driving is a good paying job and I see pay dropping as autonomous trucks start filtering into the fleet. Part of the equation of good pay is consistent on-time delivery and no serious accidents. At some critical mass of autonomous vehicles, corporations will start asking why should they pay the driver so much if the truck's software is doing all that work?
Self driving trucks are currently being tested so the manufacturers are definitely exploring this technology for sure but it's full blown implementation is probably a couple years away. I should have enough time to pay off my truck before suffering any I'll effects of autonomy or electrification of the class 8 truck sector.
That was super educational, and a nice change of pace from your normal entertainment focused content. Definitely mix stuff up with some more videos like this once in a while!
As a fellow trucker, I think he explained the ins and outs of the truck pretty well. I drove an older Cascadia at my last trucking job and liked it a lot.
I am deeply impressed with the knowledge of this Man. I can tell he's not one of the UA-cam trucking guru's who claim to know, but he actually does. He's put in the time and energy to understand his craft and equipment. You just don't find this level of professionalism in the industry. Even some techs don't understand what they're working on.
I just started to learn to drive a ten speed at work. I am very excited to the hang of it and start to drive solo. Need practice on the double clutching for the CA DMV test. Thank you for the great video!
This is one of your best videos. God bless the Owner Operator truck drivers out there who are doing it the right way. I know it's a tough business with all the competition out there and the big corps who will undercut themselves right out of business. Politicians need to make laws so owner operators can more fairly compete with the large trucking companies.
Great work on the video! Dan is a Pro Driver. I wish every New Entrant owner operator had a chance to talk with him before they purchase their first truck. The information presented was extremely useful. Drive Safe!
Great video and I love this segment. Only thing I'll add is that when he was talking about the air brake system, what he meant to say was that the "low air pressure" warning system alarms kicks in at 60...not the actual brakes. They dont lock in until you get down to 40...that's when the truck is stopping you whether you want to or not! Been driving since 2002 and always enjoy running into good guys like this guy along the way!
The actual pressures I rifled off may not have been 100 percent as to when the brakes start locking up I can agree the valve pops back out at roughly 40psi
I own a gliderkit with a MBE4000 Was told not to purchase a MBE. 3 years late never a single day down cuz the engine so reliable with no emission..this glider had bought me 2 more gliders trucks..

Tom Starcevich That's what I do as well in Upstate NY. 2011 International with the crap 13 liter MaxxForce. Great truck except for the DPF filter
60 psi is when the wig wag waves, 15-20 psi is when the brakes pop
Mr flapper made perfect sense all the way across the board. I myself run the engine setup with no complaints. Great video
No emissions and if it's a 99 or older block no e-logs too!
This.
Yeah pretty much the perfect unicorn to have.
@@markmayfield2228 you can run paper logs for up to 8 days while repairs/parts are in progress.
Lmao why I drive a 2000 W900 with 99 engine...love my paper log..😂
I would love to see more big rig videos, gives us an insight into a life and truck engineering that most of us will never get to experience.
I know everyone is surprised by his appearance and clear knowledge of his rig. Most truck drivers know their tractors from front to back, if you're an owner operator you have to, this is this mans business and knowing your tractor means you can convey information to techs over problems or just know how to fix them yourself.
Awesome video!! The guy is cool, knowledgable, and has a great sense of humor. He would be a great instructor.
This guy really described the glider setup and how a big rig works very well!
Agree with you
I've got a 12.7 that was rebuilt @ a million and it has another 1.4 million on it since then. Possibly the most reliable engine.
The thing is 5.2 is crap, I have a 99 fld120 with a 1lw cat and have no problem staying above 6. In a newer truck if your not above 7 your doing something wrong.
Smart move trucker Dan. I have a Freightliner Columbia glider same engine etc for every reason you laid out.
Diesel jordan what's your opinion on a d13 2014 Volvo do they have issues with emission? Will appreciate your opinion. Thanks.
@@dieselfixr thanks for your help.
With the subject of big rigs that I know little to nothing about, this guy knows his stuff!
I knew nothing about glider kits until this video. Thank you!!
Met this guy at a receiver today in South Carolina, good guy really knows his stuff. Nice talking to you Dan, keep the shiny side up.
KD
Owner Op.. 10 years experience.. This guy is amazing. He should sell trucks or train drivers. Very knowledgable. Wow!
Detroit series 60, as far as I'm concerned best engine on the market.
This guy knows his truck, wish all drivers were this knowledgeable,
Sad part is all drivers should know all this information
Yes,Series 60 is a Budget motor, meaning easy to maintain, rebuild and operate... Next in Line is the 3406E then the Cummins N-14 for electronic motors- The 855 cummins,3406A-B wre reliable pre electronic
Dan reminds me of my late brother who was also a trucker. Like Dan he too was a great driver and very knowledgeable. I am glad to see that this type of nice guy is still driving our goods all over this great country. Keep it up Dan.
I'm trying bud lol. If you want to see more stuff I'm working with Mr.Truck on his channel.
Thank you TFL for taking the time to feature us truckers on your channel,I greatly appreciate it! Great video as always!
We just got two 2017 Peterbilt 579s with the pre-emission Detroit in them. So much more reliable than the newer engines out there.
thats what the rail roads say. thats why they are rebuildinjg old diesel locomotives
@@dknowles60 i dont blame them at all
Thank you TFL and Andre. These are simple but complicated machines and it's a complicated industry to be in.
Loved this video! This is one of my favourite series you guys do now. I love the huge range of different trucks you guys do
These Freightliner very nice!!! Recently did inspection on bunch of these trucks with 500k miles plus and you will never tell they had that many miles. No oil leaks and clean from rust.
The ones I drive aren't
I’m new to your channel but this here is by far one of the best interviews I have ever seen. You definitely asked the right questions for your viewers and Dan gave outstanding answers.
That is one well educated driver. And you don't want to go to California with all that traffic . You will run out of driving hours withing 10 miles lol.
And California still has a 55 mph speed limit for trucks!
@Aj Cogswell who said he didnt have experience? the only time frames given is how long hes had this particular truck.
Very knowledgeable and well spoken man! Thanks for the great explanations. We need more like him! This was my favorite episode for this segment so far. Plus, it was great to hear just why it is worth going with what is known to be reliable instead of the cool new truck. Thank you for bringing this to us!
I'm a trucker and trust me when I say we are not all that damn dirty. Come on man people already think we are the scum of the earth.
@King Trump He's just a troll.
Keep the greasy side down driver, catch ya on the flip!
This guy Dan did a pretty good job explaining everything. My handle was fender bender named after my father who is also a trucker. This was probably my favorite one yet thank you guys for doing this.
Hey TruckerDan , if you ever swing by Colorado - let us know!
@@TFLtruck I plan on taking vacation there sometime this year I would love to stop by. I drive semi locally in az I'm home every night. I did otr (over the road) for about 3 years and loved it.
Can’t believe this didn’t episode didn’t show up in my notifications. But I love the fact that they went and did this. I drive a Kenworth T660 18 speed and love it. It’s awesome to finally have us truckers on the channel. Freightliners aren’t my kind of truck, but it’s awesome they had a very knowledgeable working man to explain the ins and outs of our everyday life. Big thumbs up 👍.
I love it. Please bring this guy back for more.
Flapper’s enthusiasm is amazing! It is great to see someone doing what they love to do.
“It’s only had one loose nut behind the wheel, me”
This trucker should be a brand. Dan's Cable TV Show, Dan's Truck Driving School, Dan's Freightliner Repair Facility, He is smart, well spoken, and knowlegable about many things trucking!
What excellent interview and what a nice, knowledgeable and down to earth bloke Dan is. Furthermore he us clearly a very savvy operator and his purchase (Freightliner etc.) was about commercial realities and common sense and not all about bling and the "wank" factor associated with some other brands of trucks
Got to love a guy who understands how his machine works.
Great episode, a real professional working man, good job Andre.
This guy is awesome! Answered so many of those questions I have had about these amazing trucks. Gotta bring this guy back!
I started watching the video just cause the name got me curious... but kept watching because the guy really knew how to explain everything.
This guy knows his stuff. Great opportunity for me to just sit back and listen and absorb some knowledge. Before this I had no clue about glider trucks and even though I still don't know much, I learned a lot. Seems to me Dan knows every nut and bolt on his truck. Very knowledgable. This was a good vid.
If you want to learn more I'm doing videos for Mr.Truck and there are 2 out currently
i hope you guys gave him a new TFL shirt... you guys have TFL pants?
@Clay S ohh boy
stickloaf he's a working man let him be
I bet you smell him before see him loool
He's running his own business, what are you guys doing? Twiddling your thumbs in your mama's basement.
Darko Angel doubt it
This is probably the most interesting segment i have watched here. This guy is so knowledgeable and awesome. He needs his own channel or trucking show.
I like that the dude is a bit rough around the edges, i can trust what he’s saying.
@@SledgeOfHouseHammer This guy will be long retired before self driving trucks are a thing
@@holsteincowboy they already are a thing
Self driving trucks are currently being tested so the manufacturers are definitely exploring this technology for sure but it's full blown implementation is probably a couple years away. I should have enough time to pay off my truck before suffering any I'll effects of autonomy or electrification of the class 8 truck sector.
100% true gear jammer actually knows his truck and what it's capable of doing. A true American hardworking truck driver👏💪🇺🇸
This was a very informative video for someone like me who knows very little about semi-trucks but finds them interesting.
That was super educational, and a nice change of pace from your normal entertainment focused content. Definitely mix stuff up with some more videos like this once in a while!
Man that was cool. Something about watching those trucks makes feel like driving cross country.
As a fellow trucker, I think he explained the ins and outs of the truck pretty well. I drove an older Cascadia at my last trucking job and liked it a lot.
I like your office. Always something to watch on the big screen as you're working.
Doesn't matter WHAT anyone else thinks , it's YOUR ride homie .
The owner is explaining everything so well and funny so happy I looked at this video
Starting driving in 2011, sounded old school. Knows that Detroit's are great. Very professional we need more guys and gals like Dan on the highways.
I've learned more than I needed on a Sunday. Great job!
This is one of your best videos. God bless the Owner Operator truck drivers out there who are doing it the right way. I know it's a tough business with all the competition out there and the big corps who will undercut themselves right out of business. Politicians need to make laws so owner operators can more fairly compete with the large trucking companies.
Very well spoken hope to hear from more guys & girls like this.
My dad owns a trucking company, almost 40 years in business so I grew up around semis, loved to see it on here!
Great review. Please do more of these in the future.
Great work on the video! Dan is a Pro Driver. I wish every New Entrant owner operator had a chance to talk with him before they purchase their first truck. The information presented was extremely useful. Drive Safe!
Loved this. He is quite the character 🤭
I own a gliderkit with a MBE4000
Was told not to purchase a MBE.
3 years late never a single day down cuz the engine so reliable with no emission..this glider had bought me 2 more gliders trucks..
@Sandy Lee dear sandy we run the east cost Only..no problems here in the dirty south .thxz for u inputs but we o/o..are looking for trouble free trucks.
Sounds like you've been doing good with the mbe. I was getting parts at a Freightliner dealership and there was a guy that had been there for 3 weeks waiting on a oil pump for his mbe engine.
There not bad motors like one comment mentioned parts are sometimes hard to come by. They hardly break down.
@@tdashkevich
Freightliner at my home town overnight any parts mbe needs..but it was a water pump..yes they are more expensive than a Detroit but run this MBE 14 hour a day..money is not a issue..
I liked the few mbe4000s I’ve driven. We have them in dump trucks at work and they seem to be pretty reliable and great on fuel
It is nice to see hard working guys just as they are. This dude is gold. A perfect teacher in driving school.....who cares if he has a dirty shirt. Great vid by the way.
Thank you for the kind words. There's more content on mrtruck's UA-cam channel. I'm working on his channel some.
Staying out of CA. One smart guy. Prob married to a swim suit model. Sign him up.
He's married to that truck
I work in a Freightliner Dealership I am proud of our trucks and I can't see myself in any other truck than a Freightliner. A Freightliner with a Series 60 is the most reliable truck and most common trucks on the road I am happy with our trucks and I am glad I watch this video. This guy knows his stuff keep on trucking.
