As in the famous performances by Billie and De De Pierce, they play 'Love Songs of the Nile' in the key of D flat - a key rarely used by traditional jazz bands. Many bands make this tune easier for themselves by playing it in C. In the original movie ('The Barbarian') of 1933, it was sung in the key of E flat, which is also 'easier' and used by some jazz bands. The song was composed by Nacio Herb Brown and Arthur Freed.
I did some research thru all the jazz bands and wanna be bands' who did played "LOVE SONGS' OF THE NILE'', listen each bands performed and indeed nothing came close to the performances of this group "TUBA SKINNY"...the arrangement and tempo of this melody was superbly done..the timing of each member was amazing!!
romeo paradero, it's hard to top Tuba Skinny at their absolute best. You must have heard that version by the Shotgun Jazz Band, funnily enough with Barnabus instead of Charlie on trombone. As great as this one maybe, though very different and vastly enhanced by Marla's outstanding vocal, she totally "nailed" it as they say, on that particular day. But I don't compare the two bands, they work together a bit but are different. Love them both and I don't think either version of this can be excelled.
There is a real joy to be found watching Shaye's face as her cohorts play. Her expressions of joy, surprise, appreciation, admiration speak volumes about how talented and practiced they all are. Terrific group!
@@stewartfenton7660 there are three musicians who seem a natural match for TS, although they are not standard band members at the moment: Charlie Halloran, Ewan Bleach and Jon Doyle. They all seem to be great people who fit in with the band's high commitment to performance.
@@stevegrooms1142 yes, they fit in and they all go back a long way. Although I suppose an awful lot of musicians do. But Barnabus and Craig are hopefully set for the next fifty years or so.
@@stewartfenton7660 I'm less sure than you that many musicians could fit in Tuba Skinny as neatly as Ewan, Jon and Charlie do. Something odd about the band is how much the different musicians have in common: they are highly accomplished, modest and friendly. Anyway, it is a comfort to think that the band could replace virtually any member and retain its special qualities.
@@stevegrooms1142 no sorry, that didn't come across well. I just meant those three guys aren't unique in knowing the band well. But to know them well enough to be able to improvise with them, apparently at the drop of a hat, yes, that's a different thing.
I’ve pulled the little red dot near the end of this song back three times. I love listening to the beautiful harmony of the instruments. Just perfect. I place this group on top of any professional group. Thanks Shaye and all the band. Three times listening may hold me a day or so.
Absolutely perfect. Every instrument right on with rhythm and harmony, and the sound that comes from this group playing this song is magnificent. Just can’t be beat.👌🏻👏🏻🤗
Finally Love Song of the Nile is added to the repertoire. Maybe they've been playing it for years but it's never been on youtube! It's long been one of my favorite numbers.
The tune is wonderful. I know the song from Dee Dee and Billie Pierce from the 1970s with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Here I miss the voice of Erika, and for ME it is a song for a smaller band. Not two guitars and banjo, no washboard there, not four horns. But this my own opinion. The playing is very fine here.
Yes, the listing was added shortly after my comment. I was sure it was a glitch or an oversight. In all other postings BigEasy has provided credits. I, for one, am very grateful for the time and effort expended to bring the great TS performances to those of us who cannot bring ourselves to N'awlins.
Ciijen Jones : It's always a good idea to point out that listings are missing or part missing, a lot of people are new to TS, and need the information especially as the bands add or loose musicians from time to time. A good example is Ewan Bleach on clarinet, who comes over from the UK for a while and then goes back again. I hope you can make a visit to New Orleans in the future, all the musicians are the nicest people I have ever met, not just this band, but all the bands. Ewan Bleach and The Shake'm up Jazz Band ( All Girl band) are both appearing at the jazz fest in Brittany France at the end of July. The Shake'm Up Jazz band was started by Shaye Cohn, but is now led by Marla Dixon, leader of Shotgun Jazz Band.
@MichaelKingsfordGray I will not try to guess the nationality of one who thinks a spelling or typographical error is a grammatical mistake. Or that one slip in a paragraph of over 120 words evidences an "appalling" command of writing properly. Much less that spelling or grammatical errors are of much consequence in a discussion of music.
Sax beautiful, clarinet beautiful, everything beautiful.

Very much enjoyed the sax approach to this.
What a great number. What a fantastic band.
“How sweet it is” when I hear that sax and clarinet together or separate, but then the whole band is my favorite. Play that again.

I did the same. I strongly agree.

Good also to see Charlie enjoying the others' playing. A really nice guy I gather. He looks it too.

Wow. What a beautiful song and what a wonderful sound comes from Tuba Skinny playing it. I love it. It’s my favorite of all you play. Great job.
A beautiful song done right by my No. 1 jazz group.
Wow! Wow! Superb!

Always great!!

Ewan sounds like he played for Guy Lombardo.
In Db, as Billie Pierce recorded it.
I dare you to play while staring directly into the crowd, pick one persons eyes. I can't wait to see what this song does to 'em.

The performer listing paste seems to have failed.
Performers, left to right:
Ewan Bleach - sax, Craig Flory - clarinet, Shaye Cohn - cornet, Charlie Halloran - trombone, Robin Rapuzzi - washboard, Jason Lawrence - banjo, Todd Burdick - tuba, Max Bien Kahn - resonator guitar, Greg Sherman - guitar.
