notches are for measurement. Longer part is called a "fid length," shorter part is a "short fid" and the whole thing is a "full fid." These are used in splicing double-braid. I really love the little splicing tools. Very inexpensive compared to fids.

The notches on the fid are measurements for your berry. When you build a loop just measure to the marks for the tail length.
