I just cant understand the amount of data stored in Myung's memory, I mean, at least Jordan has his tablet but Myung only has his memory and he effortlessly plays like a god. He and Petrucci are far beyond our reality
That's mostly mechanical memory that comes into place when you play a lot, and rehearse a lot, and DT jam and rehearse a lot together before the gigs.
Real memory just needs to be accessed when/if you commit a mistake and need to recover fastly, but in this case, the impressive part is that DT basically do not commit mistakes while playing, they are monsters.
Applicature Memory (memory of hands)
And doesnt that Yamaha Sound amazing....... Not sure if goign the musicman was a good idea, Man this bass is in the pocket
Really goes to show you, muscle memory is a real thing
its muscle memory.... i do gigs part-time (1-3 times a year) but almost never misses to play at home for at least 30-minutes daily, and i can probably play a couple of albums worth of songs by memory... so what more for a professional full-time musician who doesn't have to do a 9-5 job and can just work on their skills and techniques all-day 😅
Lyrics by John Myung
HAHAHAHAHA!!!! Love it.
He did the lyrics to Breaking All Illusions
+fifrenzyguy341 he sings better than better than labrie
N. ,m.
He wrote Metropolis pt. 1: the Miracle and Sleeper
I have recently come to the conclusion that John Myung is a long haired Buddha, having reached enlightenment at a young age, he now has a transcendental understanding of the universe and its inner workings far beyond what any human in the material world can comprehend. Myung knows that spoken words have little meaning in the spiritual realm, and only lead to bickering any hatred amongst the many creeds of life in the universe, so he prefers silence, opting instead to spread his message of perfect (shredding) harmony, beauty, and understanding through his bass playing.
Damn. That's more words than Myung ever spoke in his life.
Wow, come to think of it over the years, that might just be true! Anyway, so long as he's composing, we're all happy! :D
Buddism isn't real
moron
I fucking love this comment.
As a bassist I have to say Myung's right hand technique is quite incredible in its efficiency. You wouldn't know he's playing and plucking strings if saw his 3 right hand fingers in isolation, it's so effortless and relaxed.
Yeah it's a joy to watch him play
He's a class act. Quiet, understated, dignified, super talented and let's his music do all the talking.
It's a shame there aren't more like him in this world.
I've never heard of this band until UA-cam recommended it. Holy shit this is impressive. Sounds like a metal opera.
Well Idk if you looked into them more, but this is just a mashup of some of their songs, and aĺl their songs rock, to me at least =)
@neo taurus dont be like that to that person. this was my first DT track I have ever listened as well back in 2008. months later, i was bingeing to their songs and later listened to every individual instrumental featured in this great piece. we discover dream theater in different ways.
Came here to see ONLY Myung playing. All the band was playing too ... Wasn't disappointed !
Having a 12-minute video focused only on one of the greatest bass player ever is just amazing.
Thank you for this video!
I remember first getting this album and being sent into a transcendental state of WHAT THE FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!!
lol my dad came and watched this over my shoulder for a bit and said 'is that normal speed?' :D
The actually play Dance of Eternity much faster here!
@@joeyallison7323 Yeah slightly
your dad is godfather bass
That Yamaha Bass sounds absolutely amazing. Such underrated basses
His tone was better those days compared to his Music Man sound, which I don't like at all.
Amazing how relaxed every member is. Especially Myung. While doing those awesome bass melodies and technical stuff he kinda stares at his instrument, tosses his hair back, watches the other guys play... Such a nice atmosphere there on stage. Love it
I want more bass volume on every DT songs.

Yuceliko watching 7:50 happen is just insane. Then shift into mind is just amazing
Thank you Yuceliko
Very much appreciated 😁
You sir are a badass. Thank you so very much!
Awesome....He is the greatest bassist ever.....I've been loving his bass play for over 20 years. He is the man.
Better than Geddy Lee?
Quite different styles.
I really love Myung, because he's always concentrate only into his music and we can see that just before his AMAZING bass solo at 4:28 that he's entering in a full state of concentration, it's what I call Majesty. *-*
Or YtseJam even.
he is the coolest bassist ever!!
haha I love how chill myung is during all of this
Perry D he used to headbang alot before and whip his hair around
the amount of memorisation involved in this song is overwhelming
Unbelievable high level of progressive music.
He's such a reserved player for a bass player in a technicall prog metal band and i mean that in a compliment. Like for their whole career I've always wanted to hear more Myung feature moments because I feel like he could do something explosive. But watching this he just perfectly nails everything, doesn't need to have the spotlight moments. What a player.
John Myung is a complete Bass Player!! Speed technique fingering etc... This guy has limits to what he can do with that bass!! Rock on Myung!!!
Damn they're all flawless.
i come back to watch this almost weekly and it blows me away every time, the man is a master at what he does
I can't help but imagine all of Dream Theatres songs as Final Fantasy battle themes.
They really should turn his mixes up.
+McGangBang Is it just me or is it like that on some of their albums?
john myung's bass needs more punchy mids and highs. he just gets buried in the mix
It's gotten a lot lower since portnoy left as well. Definitely need to crank up that bass
Falling Into Infinity has been stuck in my car for a while now, have to say that is my fav DT studio mix, Myung is definitely audible there.
I love this band!!!!
Petrucci from 90s, Petrucci from 2000s and Petrucci from now - looks like three different persons.
He was very lanky back in the 90's, then he became Goku, and nowadays he became the Hulk.
Internët more like that god of rock in guitar hero 3
The only same person is John Myung
I remember him rocking the hot topic pants in the early 2000s after he cut his hair
Dream Theater's keyboardist from the early 90s, from the late 90s, and from now - also looks like three different persons.
I seriously need to go to sleep but maybe after I listen to this 10 more times
Good lord. That's amazing bass playing. John Entwistle would be proud.
i always get a little choked up at the end of this piece. it's such an incredible musical journey, and the payoff is awesome!
It's meditative to watch Myung play like this. Totally relaxed, in the pocket, and playing totally effortlessly. Stunning.
these guys sound better live than on any record
I was at a live DT show in fall 09, and one of the things that struck me most about Myung was his unbelievable stamina and strength! Most of DT's stuff is fast tempo'd and often complex. John M. put on his usual perfect performance for nearly two hours!
No doubt many, many hours of rehearsal, awesome band.
john myung is very very very FANTASTIC AND COOL!
only a true musician will appreciate this kind of music.
itu je ilham yg kau ada???? FUCK-FACE!
io nn sono un musicista mah cavolo !!!! è magico!!!!
einstein vs tesla Or just a fan of really good music
einstein vs tesla I'm not a musician, but I appreciate this kind and the band's music. Every individual has different taste in music
einstein vs tesla Related to your name... I chose Tesla.
Did you hear the horrible mistake at the end of the video? Yeah, they stop playing :(
:'(
It continues into Trial of Tears though
Dahsyat alias amazing !
I love how relaxed he is... and he played some parts with one eye covered.
I always wonder if Myung is a robot that Dream theatre build to play bass for them, How on earth can he play all this with perfect timing, perfect technique and doing it so effortlessly. (without even changing his facial expression!)
Robots can't move that fast. He's an alien.
+luliches he is THE human
+Charlie Craig Nah he's just Korean.
He's a Korean assassin. Dont let him fool you
Yea he is korean but he is not like a korean nowadays
I love his bass sound
Myung is a machine. They all are. Flawless. Effortless. John makes it look easy. As does Mike. Perfection. That's what this is. The top of the top. That's what they are. They all set a new high for their instruments. And together, they bounce their gifts off of each other bringing out their best. Their notes ringing together into one perfectly divided and perfectly tonal progression of sound. Pure elation for our sound sense. Near perfection on earth. That's what this is.
It's cool to watch Myung play the whole thing. Thanks for posting it!!
I miss this band.
This is unbelievable. This is music is trans-dimensional.
Geese, what an artist on the bass. Phenomenal!
This is amazing ...thank you for sharing this with us...
I like the part where Dream Theather enters the stage and rock our world.
7:50 is a level of epicness Dream Theater have failed to match since it was first written!!!
Brilliant! Simply brilliant!
That was the most perfect way to discribe something I've ever hear and the very truth about Dream Theater.
I had to log on just to say you: Very well done sir!
- Dad, why is my sister's name Rose?
-Because your Mother loves Roses
-Thanks Dad .
-No Problem Dream Theater Instrumedley MYUNG ONLY - "The Dance of Instrumentals"
John Myung is honestly the most mindblowing bassist I have discovered in metal so far. Different class to everyone.
Dude..... Les Claypool? I'd say he is just as awesome
GlazedGamer yeah, Les claypool is like a god
Yes, Les Claypool has all the same chops but Myung plays bass on 4-minute tracks as well as 40-minute tracks. Primus's body of work can't even hold a candle to Dream Theater's.
Amulya Shekhar Are you kidding me? Primus is massive, Dream theatre is fucking fantastic, dont get me wrong, but when it comes to success, primus has them trounced. primus is probably the most influential underground metal act out there.
Primus hold at least three braziers to DT's candle.
exactly Les claypool is a god, no one can fight with him except steve digiorgio
Thank you for this. It seems that most videos of the band intentionally avoid showing John Myung, as if there's no bass. He is amazing to watch.
Myung is a outstanding bass player. When you see his fingers on the neck of the bass, it's like there hardly moving. He is amazing.
great fingers!!!
There's a rumor that Myung doesn't talk too often because his voice is more amazing than his bass playing, and if he spoke too often the enviroment and movement of plate tectonics would go wild.
Simply awesome!
this video is pure gold!!
Hey, it's that solo in Metropolis part 2 where he plays a bass solo.
he never smiles..
He was just bummin' that he left the lyric sheet back in the hotel room :D
No time, must bass.
I really appreciate this upload
Thoroughly entertained…bravo! 😎🙏🏼🎶🎸🤙🏽
No Items MYUNG ONLY, Final Destination
just look at that tech skill, he probably plays claw hand.
Best bassists of all time
1. Geddy Lee
2. John Myung
3. Nobody else.
Komatsuzaki Uh... Les Claypool? David Elfson? Flea? Justin Chancellor?
Alok Bhattarai ALL INFERIOR.
In your opinion as a fanboy maybe. However, looking into their different syles, they are awesome too. I also forgot to mention Steve Harris
Alok Bhattarai I was just kidding around man. The only bassists I know are Geddy Lee and John Myung. XD
Lol. xD
You should listen to Tool and Red hot chilli Peppers. [they have amazing bassist]
Also, in my opinion, the bassist of tool is better than John Myung.
P.S.
I love anime
Such a beautiful singer.
oh my god!!! incredible
But can he play sweet child o'mine bass?
ahahahahaha..
ahahahah lol
Thunderstruck is more virtous.
he will play it blindfolded!! :D
Hey, Duff mckagan is a great bassist too
I really liked the way his Yamaha basses sounded
THANK YOU FOR THIS UPLOAD
Mr. Min the LEGEND bassists is a freak! He can make that BASS do anything! He is amazing! As is John Paul Jones and Geddy Lee! John Myung is perty darn good too!!
8:34 - John Myung: Okay, now I just gotta...
8:36 - Paradigm Shift starts playing: Hold on a minute, I don't know this song...
8:39 - John look back at Portnoy and the big screen
8:40 - Liquid Tension pops up and in a fragment of a second, Myung goes: Oh it's this one...*plays the first note* I got this...
he almost looked up and smiled once
key words: almost and once lol
I don't know if anyone has ever picked up on it but the bass line at the end of This Dying Soul cuts through a bit and gosh is it fricken incredible!
Como conseguiu só com o display nele!?
I wonder how myung felt when liquid tension experiment came on
Probably he felt nothing since he was working with his own side projects: Platypus and The Jelly Jam. They recorded Liquid Tension to strees out all the frustration they were having during the proccess of recording Falling into Infinity and seeing the producers trying to make Dream Theater a more comercial band. I believe two albuns were a cry of mixed anger and relieve for them. Also, because of LTE, some yeras later, they got RUdess.
Like he was on break . . .
how do they memorize all the note ...
Ya Broni practice, rehearsal.
Muscle memory mostly
You know... Alien always have a big BRAIN.
They have played it so much they have it etched in muscle memory.
Thanks for the upload sir!
Listen to this Musicicans 29 years now- I would say - born at the right time!

John myung
Where's billy sehan?
@@ajisantoso6095 you' ve to know the differentiation beetween myung and sehan...
Billy is most popular for melodic bass...
John myung is the most popular for rythmic bass...
So, they different in all side...
For me myung is better than the other one...
Sorry...
I Wonder if there's any videos titled "Dream Theater Instrumedley James LaBrie ONLY"
lol i've found it hahaha
Anang1928 oh no!!!!
I've been fan of him since 11 years old, now I'm 20.
Maestro de maestros... mi motivación e inspiración.......
4:21 ooooops hahahaha
lol
Is cause the pedal effects before the solo
He played those part with swaping finger technique, it will earn sustainable sound of the note, you could see him in 3:21 he used the same technique
where can I find the lyrics?
Johnmyung.com
Professional Air Guitarist lmao
This is a true master of his craft.
5:55 Wut? LOL
4:21 oh man you clearly can see that part is overdubbed, profissinaly recorded presentations are always a bunch of lies
He literally doesn't play (misses) a note in the video, are you gonna sue him for that? such overdub. mate, go listen to them live and then tell me how much they overdub stuff. He's played that bass solo so many times (even in representations/lessons) that he can ace it with his eyes closed. Other than that, they're all humans, they all make mistakes, so overdubbing minor mistakes is never bad. Those minor mistakes do not impact the show at all, trust me - I can assure you of that since I've seen them live myself.
If we were talking about anyone but Myung, I would be freaking out just as much as you probably.
And if you wait 10 more seconds, you can clearly hear him fumble a note or two. Yeah, sooooo overdubbed.
Stfu.
it's clearly overdubbed, you thick fanboys need to stfu
He played those part with swaping finger technique, it will earn sustainable sound of the note, you could see him in 3:21 he used the same technique, so no overdubb after all
Thanks so much Felipe! I'm trying to learn this one on bass right now and being able to watch John play makes it waaay easier to figure out what positions to use for the notes that are played :)
This Is The Greatest performance of a Great Progressive Bassist in DreamTheater's Finest....
so hard to find another one like him...a humble guy..^^,
4:23 he didn`t play that part
I guess he is human after all
I wondered... wtf... playback? how did the bass sound came through? prob added later in the DVD editing
He played those part with swaping finger technique, it will earn sustainable sound of the note, you could see him in 3:21 he used the same technique
@@dk_2405
No, that was fixed later in the studio. Notes G and A # should sound, but it clamps completely different and does not hit the timing.
But can he play Seven Nation Army?
Too complex for him.
this here is so so healing
Thanks for edit this vídeo, man! It's awesome!
Myung looks bothered, like "it's too simple..."
Portnoy is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than Mangini... I miss him :C
Just a fast asiatic,where's the feel?Nowhere.
Go listen to "Through her eyes" and the me those fretless lines don't have feeling. This guy honestly is one of the best players to ever touch the instrument. He can play anything.
Listen to Solar Groove too.
Whatever you said man... He's a GOD for me. I can't stop my finger shaking every time I watch this vid.
I saw Dream Theater play at a bar in Sacramento in the 90's. Just awesome!
Videos like this are why I strive to improve, thanks JM for the inspiration
