LS Swap in a Jeep Cherokee XJ: the engine goes in
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 лип 2024
- After tear down is complete, the first part of any LS engine swap is actually mounting the engine into the Jeep. For this cherokee, we're using Novak Conversions mounts that make this a direct bolt in conversion to the Jeep chassis with zero modification required to the jeep frame rails, and no welding.

this project is coming along nicely guys! Don't think I'm gonna be a jeep guy or anything, but it's refreshing to working on something different!
Can you give me engine advice on turning my lq4 into a 383 square stroker
hey LT what's Bumpus up to these days? you two guys were my fav duo
Are you not allowed to work in the driveway?
what header are you using? the motor slipped in like a glove into my xj but the longtubes i had took alot of massaging to not hit. in hindsight i should have opened up the frame rails.

No,hoa.
Must be a sweet deal for the customer, he gets an ls swap and he can watch the whole thing on UA-cam.
Best deal ever
No joke that's the dream build 😂
Man that engine looks like it was made for that XJ.....👌
it really is a good fit
So...who wishes they were LT's neighbor...I would be over there all the f-ing time. Seriously keep up the good work and I am just waiting till this channel blows up.
Man I was just thinking the same thing!!! Love this dudes passion and work.
The track bar support is a aftermarket part, you could space it an inch or two down and there wont be any geometric problems from it. Awesome series look forward to the finish!
Yes the builds are where its at. You always do a great job of explaining your progress on these projects and what problems may possibly arise.
I wish all the xj lift components and swap availability had come out while they were still in production. I love them. Nice work LT, you are flying!
Love watching the stuff get put together especially in time lapse. You have a great Friday, LT.
I enjoy the simplicity of this channel. I know LT wants to make it bigger and go further w it but gosh its just so cool.
Love your little comments on everything on why you do it and what you could run into, its a nice touch.
I try!
So pumped! Great job man I love sharing your videos with my son! Keep at it
I enjoy this build mostly because it's relatable. LT's building it the way I would have to build a truck and It's very modest.
Finally caught up on watching the uploads after 1 week of working long hours. Keep up the work LT!
Amazing videos! I’ve been watching the PowerNation videos since I was a kid. Great work!
I’m about to start with this endeavor myself. ‘89 Cherokee. Was an in-line-6, 4x4, 5-speed. These videos are helping immensely since I’m not a huge knowledge base for LSs in general. So thank you!!
Glad to help
As a guy who happens to really really love XJs and E39s, this video is right up my alley!
thats a good combination of cars!
I will says kudos to you on the quality of your channel. It's almost like watching one of your shows from the past.
Glad you enjoy it!
Channels getting big man. Good work and nice job. This xj is a good swap.
Super fun seeing you lower that thing in with the trans attached.
That fits in there pretty good. You should buy a cheap HarborFreight winch and mount it to the floor of your shop to pull vehicles in that don’t run.
My son just picked up a 2000. Just the motivation he will need. Keep up the great work.
Has he found an ls engine for his xj? I can’t seem to find any for mine
New o-ring on the oil pick up
Nice clean XJ, my old TJ was so rusty every nut-cert just spun off so we ended up welding a lot of nuts to the frame so that we could fix the trans crossmember and one of the engine mounts after I did the lift.
Honestly I don't know what's more impressive the ls swap single-handedly or the fact that he didn't blink the entire video kudos my friend
you cant imagine the concentration it takes to not blink ever
Glad you are making these videos.
That fits surprisingly better then I expected it. All the ls swaps I’ve watched they’ve cut the unibody to make it fit.
??? These motors don't usually require that . Novak makes motor mounts for the 5.3 and 6.0 that place the engine right in the bay without any cutting on an xj . The hood is usually the clearance issue depending on what stuff you use o. The intake truck or car .
I have considere a v8 but I already have an atlas 5.0 that would require a change to a 3.8 or a 4 speed case to make use of the v8 as the 5.0 would redline at about 30 mph just like 4.0 making it useless... The only thing i want the v8 for is hill climbs the 4.0 and atlas are plenty for rock crawling with 42s ... long steep loose climbs ...not so much .
I've watched this like 3-4 times, just got a 1998 XJ and my LQ4/4l65e may be going in.
The install was smooth like butta...I am looking forward also for the exhaust system you're going to fan up!
Derek from VGG: "She's got a Never Start bat-tree..." 👌
I just bought a XJ and have been seriously considering an LS and doing it on my channel. This is a big help!
you should!
Love the off road builds!!!!!
i have a 89 comanche swb. i want to put a newer hemi under the hood. but after watching this... LS looks so much easier......
Looking good, LT!! I enjoy all of your content, BMW included!!
I appreciate that!
LIFT AND BUILD THAT SUBURBAN INTO A OFF-ROAD MONSTER!! Everyone has Jeeps. :)
soon my friend! (kinda soon that is)
Very slick!! I like using a rope on the tail shaft dropping in engine with trans doing it myself heps a bit.
Love the set up
super video...love the way you did this so far. I'm planing on swapping my 91 and this manner of documentation I can follow along .connected via FB and Instagram too so I can reach out should I have questions ...looking forward to the rest of the set
Yesssss finally some hats
If only I could have a quarter of your skill and knowledge 🙌 sick build brother
I appreciate that!
This is exactly what I'm wanting to do but I can't seem to find an XJ. This looks great!
I may have mentioned it before, I'm putting an LT1 L83 in my 37 Chev PU. I had the FATMAN MII front end in, but found I had measured from the wrong point. I've got it almost all cut out and some of the frame cleaned up.. New Camber plates and Spring towers will arrive Monday. Burned up my $20 Harbor freight grinder so got a new Dewalt coming as well. I have a Cordless Dewalt, but for extended work the batteries just don't last. I'd love to get the engine in soon to see where I am with the cab.
To add when bolting up that 4l60 (and probably others) .... always put in the first converter bolt through the flex plate hole with the flats! Then you won’t struggle as much to get the other ones in.
Typically has a spot of paint with the hole to identify it
In your time lapse using your pry bar between the flywheel teeth and transmission dowel while tightening the flywheel bolts was a super slick trick ... I’m glad I caught it I’ll use that from now on .. one of my favorite UA-camrs *stapelton42* has a theory that I love , he says “ he will never use time lapse in his video becuase it teaches nothing and only fills space and nothing said or learned it only for looking cool “
Not throwing any shade ! Have a great day !
Wow thank you for this video .. been looking for this for a while.. i want to do this .. thanks for the tutorial..
Glad it was helpful!
Fantastic video LT! I would like to see anything 2nd gen Nissan xterra , maintenance or v8 swap , or things to change for longer life of rig. ( new to me xterra) keep up the great work 👍👍
I am planning an lq4 in my 98 xj 2 door as well. Plan is a t56, ford rear, all motor, flex fuel, terminator x street Jeep. Looking forward to the next video
that sounds like a fun plan!
This thing is going to be badass! Can’t go wrong with the 6.0
no sir!
I just found your channel and I'm hooked. I looked back and didn't see one but I'd love to see an LS swap in a 2 door Jeep JK! I'd love one in mine specifically lol
Looking to late swap my ZJ! Hopefully I can find some prefabricated motor motors like the one you used.
Looks nice in there ...good work
Looks like a pretty straight forward conversion so far. Gotta love the 100,000 pumps it takes to get a cherry picker up high enough to get an engine in a truck lol.
yeah, it was about maxed out for height I'm sure
Hope you have better experience with monster transmissions than I did.
Great work!
Groovy tunes man. Groovy
Totally sweet build
Congraks on breaking 40k subscribers!
Thank you!
Can't wait to swap my xj over
I have a 97 xj with 270k that could really use a set up like this 😍
My 97 xj is getting a 5.3 & 4l60 out of a 05 suburban soon 280k on the 4.0 in it now so pumped
Going to get you to 100k!! Great content. ... Your minion#1
Fingers crossed!
I have a 5.3 with harness and computer in the garage. I need to start collecting the other parts to swap my xj.
You need to check the converter spacing make sure that converter is fully seated in the pump
For a projects, I'd like to see you add the transfer case and front axle from an AWD GM truck to my supercharged-LS-swapped Olds Delta 88!
Wow second episode already!
That seemed to go fairly well. If you want a vehicle to work on let me know. Lol
Have a 73 K20 started a frame off but haven't finished. Could sure use the help.
Hmmm, how about a tough project for the next vehicle? There are non-SS Trailblazers and GMC Envoys that come with the 5.3, and some with 4x4. Perhaps get one to lift and turn into a crawler. Or, to convert to air suspension to slam it into the ground. I like both things. I have an 03 Envoy XL 5.3 myself and would love to see these trucks get some love
E39 ls a good looking car. Best looking M5! 540 6spd would be fun car to own.
talk about a dream car! E39 M5 all day long...
After watching you push that Jeep in by hand, I have a suggestion for you. I went to harbour freight in but a cheap $60 ATV which that does 2500 pounds. Welded up a couple of brackets and bolted it to my garage floor. I just run it off a spare car battery and use the wireless remote to pull all the vehicles into my shop so I don't have to have a bunch of people help push it up the hill on my driveway to get inside. I think I'm $80 in plus a battery and a couple hours worth of work max. Totally worth it.
that is a good idea
@@LawrenceTolman
This one right here, with 2 tabs welded onto a mounting plate. Attached to the floor with bolts so I can move it if needed.

For some reason two whole people didn't like this video. I'm guessing it's some turds who just can't stand to see zero negative numbers. Great video, loved the length. Can't wait to see the finished product.
I appreciate the support!
nice work it was made for it...next build hemi swap?..
Pretty cool project, Do not have a bald spot but will order a hat for my Youngest because he loves your channel too.
much appreciated!
I thought you looked familiar. Power Tech is one of my fave shows. Growing up I watched shows very similar to it!
one of my fav shows as well!
Good stuff!!!!!
why do you always build stuff i like and make me want to do it also!
Content is content. I would love to see some e39 stuff.
My 4.0 is almost perfect. I live in Montana. Where it has a problem is actually on the highway. The speed limit is 70 and the winds blow at 40 mph. It's like asking a stock 4.0 to run at 120 mph and it results in full throttle to do 60 into a 40 mph wind which is Montana realistic. I need it for the highway.
I've been curious about doing a V8 swap on an XJ but using the 4.7l V8 from the Dakota or Ram. You'd have to find one that hasn't been abused although I'd pull the heads on any swap candidate from any manufacturer and send them to the machine shop for prep, including a valve job. The 4.7 motors are dirt cheap and make as much power and torque as any 4.0 stroker without the overheating problems. The 4.7HO motors make even more and are dirt cheap, especially since the Hemi has replaced it. And despite the OHC setup, they're actually fairly compact and will fit under the hood of an XJ.
Probably no good reason to choose it over an LS swap seeing as most of the same stuff has to be replaced either way you go other than being able to say you have a Mopar V8 in your XJ. The price of the motor would be the biggest factor. You also get access to the 545RFE transmission which has a lot of support and is pretty reliable as long you don't go crazy with the power. Most of the guys blowing them up do so with the hemis.
By the way, nice job my man
Great videos. My Clayton longarm kit has my arms connected to the new crossmember. Will I be able to retain the factory location with your ls swap?
Hello friend, excellent work 👏 the longing of a lot of us.
Where you found the parts I am trying to start my project but I have not been able to communicate with Novak for a complete conversion kit
Thats awesome man. How I can get that XJ LS SWAP kit? Can you share please?
2jz swap Jeep Cherokee saw some one do it to there Jeep and I’ve wanted to do it ever since!
YES! i would totally do this
Like this Portable Electric Winch, HP, 115VAC
21:47 i bet a little bit longer bolts and some washers would open that up enough to clear that oil pan
Damn you make good job brother
thanks a ton!
Track bar brace is definitely an add on, not a factory thing.
engine fits good
Dude I dig it! Great content. Also my family owned an auto shop and I’ve never seen an engine sling like this, any idea where to get that style straps ?
this one came from Summit Racing
More Surfing Music Montages!!
Ditto!
LS, the only engine that fits better than the original in just anything you stuff it in. Weights less, makes more power and looks 10x better than the junk that came out.
Please also mention that you don't want to pull the torque converter further forward to the engine than .125 to .165 anymore than that you have to shim it
My 94 K 2500 4 wheel drive Suburban 454 HD truck it's currently in the shop due to a speed sensor in the transmission going out. Had that thing needed a transmission I would have bought one and then the motor would have gotten money poured into it because at this point the Driveline would be worth more than the truck itself
Dude! What’s up LT!!!
21:28 That's aftermarket and for anyone who lifts an XJ with like a 32" or taller tire this is a must because those tires will tear your steering box off. That unibody can't support that much stress. Also a steering box spacer and front unibody stiffeners will help. On 37's the whole unibody should have stiffeners specially now that it's running a V8. If this guy is gonna wheel this thing and flex it out that body will be tore apart in several places very quickly. Hopefully this is next on his list.
it actually has a brace kit welded to the frame front to back, should be pretty rigid
@@LawrenceTolman That's what I was meaning, just a different term. I didn't notice it in the 3 videos so I guess I'll have to look at the one where you go over everything. I wasn't being rude, it would just be horrible to put so much time into something and it rips like a tin can. I know a guy that ruined his in about a year and a half.
Would you need someone to bring you everything to do the swap? I'd like to do a 2014+ 4.3 swap in my 98S10 SS but I dont think harnesses and things are available for that.
Really shouldve picked the engine back up and smacked the firewall with a hammer a few times where it was tight while it was easy. Thatll be hitting later.
Yep, I agree, but failing that, I'd getta big pry bar in there & lever off the heads 👍
Someone get this man a cordless impact.
For real. I am watching like. OMG, what.are.you.doing.??!!
Milwaukee will anomously send him some tools if his channel gets big enough. Precision transmission and others are claiming that they are getting tools from anonymous sources so share LT's channel
Nice I have a 96 xj I’m a start doin
Would love to see A hemi conversion on the newer Jeeps. JL or JT
I want a hat so bad now.
bet he can go through some mud now! when the blower go on?? lol nice build!
