WHICH LS ENGINE TO CHOOSE FOR YOUR SWAP!

- In this video I do my best to give you a general idea of which route to go for your LS swaps engine.
There are many more technical factors as to each engine when you talk about internals but this video is not that specific. So, if you have any questions for that it's best to ask google.
Hope this video helps!

I knew this was getting serious when the glasses are on. Dude this is gold.
I appreciate the hell out of this video.good job dude
Tire Kickers and Time Wasters will ruin your business. I would charge them a $100 consultation fee for 60 minutes of your life. If they want less then it’s $2 a minute. You would be amazed how direct people will get when they know the clock is running like a Taxi meter! If they actually go through with the swap with you then that money is applied to their balance. If they aren’t willing to part with $100 (or less) to save themselves $1000’s in headaches then it’s a waste of your time.
lol I agree. I just try to be a nice guy and help people out but, its starting to get to the point where I'll have people contact me, specifically tell me they want me to do their swap. We talk for days and then nothing, which it doesnt really bother me. Would just be nice to be making some money.
God will repay you 😊
I agree with the consultation fee! It's a sure way to weed out the tire kickers and the serious ones.
As a potential customer, I agree. Some people can't get their cars worked on because the people doing the swaps spend 20 hours a week talking to people that aren't paying to get work done.
@@krustyclassicsgarage just joined your channel yesterday and already would be willing to pay for your time to chat. Great videos! I'm definitely binge watching ya!🤙
My new favorite UA-camr
Nice tip Bro keep the vids coming

Doing my 1st LS swap, 74 Nova. Think I have a great base for my N/A build. 05 LQ9, gen 4 rods and floating flat top piston. Going BTR stage 4 cam, Victor Jr intake, ATM 750 E85 carb with 799 heads. Thinking it will pull a little better than the stock LM1-155hp 350.😂
Gen 5 L8T with a ported injection conversion and a gen4 ecu will get you basically a 400 cubic inch LS/LT hybrid with no DOD to deal with. It is a 6.6 liter iron block and ready for boost. You can run holly terminator x with this setup.
The stock rods in these L8t engines will diasgree with your boost ready statement.
Dude!! Where can I get some glasses like that?? Those rock
Gen IV is the way to go!!!!! There are plenty of 4.8, 6.0 and 6.2 that dont have the DOD and no VVT. Just change the single bolt cam out for the 3 bolt cam and always of course install ls7 lifters. Plus the MAF sensors are better design on gen IVs.
Great videos with your videos I was able to drop my motor in my car but now I'm stuck trying to figure out how to do my wireharness and what's the one I need
I have a video on how to hook up an LS swap harness.
I am working on my first swap. Ls3/4L80. 03' Crown Vic Police Interceptor. The only reason i am doing a Gen4 is a found a Ls3 block for $500 and I already have crank and Gen4 rods and pretty much everything else. I just need to pickup a set of square ports as soon as i get the money. My block is in the machine shop right now.
How much was the machine shop, what did they do? If you don’t mind me asking??
No problem, I don't mind at all. I paid $850 at the machine shop. But, I had 1 sleeve replaced. #5 cylinder. Then bored, honed, decked and cam bearings and main bearings line honed. The sleeving was $350. That included decking. They had to bore it .20 over because of sever taper in the cylinders. You can do .20 over in the Ls3 if they check the block ro make sure there is enough meat there after. Because of core shift. Some you can not. But you can never run boost. Which is fine with me. I'm not trying to be the next Street Outlaw. Lol. And I just bought a 6L90 transmission core for $300. So I will be running that instead of the 4L80.
@@GrandPitoVic ok thanks a lot, just trying to get a basic idea what the machine shop will charge.
It would have been $80 to hot tank the block. $80 cam for cam bearing, including the bearings and $80 or $120 to hone the cylinders. Depending on the blocks condition. It could be cheaper or more expensive. My block needed the sleeve and extra work, so it ran up. But it is still cheaper than $2500 for a new Ls3 block lol. I found this block for $500 cause it needed a sleeve. I haven't been able to find just a used Ls3 block for less than $1500. And it still needs all of the work.
01 and 02 Denali 6.0 came drive by wire, possibly the Caddys also. Only the top models in 01 and 02.
I'm sorry I didn't hear a word you said. I'm going to have to start over and watch the whole video again. I couldn't get over the sexy glasses. I may need a minute to myself before I watch this again.
Make sure you record too
Great vid...down dirty and to the point.
There are quite a few GEN 4 engines that dont have AFM/DOD that make good power stock.
yes !! absolutly ..... just got one from a 2008 Hummer h3 alpha 5.3 aluminum block, flat top pistons, 799 heads...none of that variable cam- dod - afm garbage. all original LH8 motor
Im going to pay for a 5.3 swap/tremec 5 speed… into a z3 roadster. How many labor hours do you think it may take?
Dailey driver, do you prefer aluminum or steel ls block?
First time checking you out. Where do you work out of?
Want to know what year 6.0 or 6.2 I can replace my 09 5.3 with , not wanting alotta mods, just tryna get about 380 hp.for my daily driver. Trans is a rebuilt 6l80. And I'm willing to pay for ur advise.
Gen 4 which is what you have, was made from late 07 to 2014.
5.3 in PA for 1500 from one junkyard I called. - harness, engine, accessories...I'll have to ask if that included trans which is what I would want also
I have a 2015 camaro SS , 6.2 liter , Manuel 6 speed this is my first Chevy and I love it , but which motor would I need to put it in , It’s not running rn I have no clue what’s wrong but if I wanted to swap it with the same motor which one would it be
Jeffery Dahmer when you put the glasses on
I have a 2003 6.0/4L80 with 72,000 miles on them, came out of a box truck and it’s still DBC, I kept the ecu from it, I am looking to put it in my 1971 Oldsmobile delta 88, until I came across your videos I thought my only option was the Holley terminator, now you say buy a cheap harness, is that all I need to make the engine and trans work with its original ecu, or do I have to buy an ecu with VATS delete? I fully intend (now that I’ve learned from your videos) to run it exactly like you are in your car, any information would be great, I want to do my swap asap so I need to know exactly what I need to make it work on the electronic side of things, mounts and all that I can figure out myself, best and easiest fuel pump recommendations as well? Thank you in advance, I’m new to this, it will be my first LS swap ever
You'll need the harness adapter for a 4l80e if you go with the cheap harness. Or go to BP automotive and get a harness that's set up for a 6.0/4l80e. Then you'll need your factory ecu tuned for a swap meaning getting vats deleted and some other things or get 1 already done from eBay for $160
@@krustyclassicsgarage for the harness I can just type in “2003 6.0/4L80 harness” in the search and it should get me where I need to be? and same for the ecu except “2003 6.0/4L80 ecu VATS delete” ? I live in an area that has no one that tunes ecu’s closest is almost 3 hours away, so I’m not gonna deal with that hassle, rather just order what I need to my doorstep
Hey man, do you think you could LS swap a 2010 Cadillac STX 2.8L
I have a 2000 Grand Prix I’m buying an 07 impala ss of course they both fwd so how much I’m I getting myself into
Totally agree
Gen III is the way to go
Gen 3 Vortec 5.3 all aluminum at our local U-Pull-It $350
My question is about fuel. I gonna swap my 97 gmc jimmy. It has the 4.3 vortec. The fuel pump just went out and I want to know if the stock pump would work with a 02 5.3 with the truck norris cam kit? If not, what pump should I use? This isn’t gonna be a race car! This is gonna be a good sounding, tire frying, daily driver.
No. You need a fuel pump that makes at least 58psi
gotta question i already have a 6.0 lq4 stock with a turbo 350 trans due to thats the trans i had in the car it was a 383 stroker built and it broke due to the machine shop doing a fuck up what intake can i use cause the truck one looks to big lol car is just gonna be a cruiser also what ecu can i use i have one that sopposed to be flashed also it has a harness with a fuse and relay box but dont know anything about it
Yuo are real deal on trust
Im interested in doing a Gen IV swap in my 81 Z28, if I was to buy an entire junk vehicle from CoPart what would you recommend? Live in Texas as well.
Recommend as far as what?
@@krustyclassicsgarage Type of car I would use to pull the motor and do the swap with everything needed. Like this. Corvette? Trailblazer?
@snotbubbles3276 easiest to find would probably be an SUV. Or if you have facebook search facebook marketplace
Looking to maybe do a swap on my 1990 300e. Motor mounts. Wonder if there are any bolt on options
Wouldnt google be a good place to ask this question ir maybe chat gpt 😅
What can a Gen 3 make HP wise? I don't feel comfortable going big power on an Aluminium block
You are not too far away from me. What can you get a 99-00 6.0 for? Looking to swap it into my 86 S10 for a street/strip truck. I've got a TH350 and 400, good I don't need a spacer.
This is a different way of trying to explain GM V8 engines but can be pretty confusing the LSs are aluminum performance blocks LS1,2,4,6,3,7,9. 1997-2017 then Vortec engines (mostly cast iron blocks LR4,L33,LM4,LM7,LQ4,LQ9 made at the same time but for mostly trucks SUVs now the LT engines are all Direct injection and the next line of High performance engines for GM LT1,LT4,LT5,LT2, and the LT6 which is DOHC and Flat plane crank so it will be completely different form GMs typical engines. Also along with the LT was 5.3 and 6.2 ecotec with active fuel management and Direct injection
Yup but this video isn't to get that technical. All that would do is confuse the target audience. Anyone who wants to know more about whichever engine they choose would just do more research on it after watching this and deciding which one they'd prefer to use.
Most people will probably find themselves looking for LQ4 or LQ9 or if they want to spend a little more a ls3/l99
first time swapper here. I have a 99 rust free southern GMC suburban 1500 4x4 OBS 5.7 and 4l60 and a 99 frame rusted GMC extended 4x4 1500 5.3 with 99k miles. They are only made a few months apart. Will I have fun or poop my 63 year old pants with this project? I haven't started yet and have an option of just buying a crate 5.7 and restoring the drivetrain.
99 OBS is practically already set up for an LS. There is a difference in transfer case but being youre putting it back into a chevy theres plenty of threads out there on google of people that have done it. Id highly recommend going the LS route if you want to actually drive and enjoy the truck. Nothing wrong with a rebuilt 5.7 but theres a reason every one LS swaps.
@@krustyclassicsgarage Thanks for the reply!
@@krustyclassicsgarage I was thinking I would use the entire lower mileage drive train from the donor truck. I think the trans and transfer case are the same.
I have a 2018 Silverado with a 5.3 that I need to rebuild the engine on and I am torn between rebuilding the 5.3 or swapping a 6.0 of the same year ish what do you think? Or still find a good gen 4 6.0?
Get a gen 3 or gen 4 6.0
A script or at least an outline would have made this video much better.
Mr Krusty I just had a IDEA…you can be mean to me to if ya want. 😂 So…totally off subject from vid. I haven’t seen many videos on the Drive shaft to Rear end. From TH 350 to 4L80E trans mating Ford or GM Rear end. U- Joints involved etc. Thanks
Th350 slip yoke is the same as a 4l60. There are many conversion u-joints out there which I learned when LS swapping my Cuda. Just need the correct slip yoke for the back of the transmission and the correct size u joint for your rear end.
Good info. Thanks.
@krustyclassicsgarage th400 and 4l80e share the same slip yoke, too. 4l80e from a van is the one you want.
Would it be a good idea to ls swap a 1991 Lexus ls400
But to see money I am thinking about putting a 24x crank and a 1x cam gear and run a Gen3 harness. I hear the Ls3 will still run strong with it.
Yes, just use the adapters they have for the gen 3 harnesses. I haven't used one so didn't want to try and talk like I have in the video.
I’ve got a 416 with a 24x crank and the stock 411 computer runs it fine. I did have to use a newer truck MAF and I think LS2 knock sensors. For anyone going from a bare block it’s what I’d recommend to keep it simple and not rely on a conversion box.
Yea Def not spending that kind of money on a Lingerfelter converter lol. With it tore down, it it would be way cheaper to have a shop swap my reluctor wheel on the crank. Thanks for the info. I Def want cruise control and traction control that I can turn on and off. I'm going to do the drive by wire so cruise is way simpler to get working. They sell aftermarket control switches to work with cruise. Traction control I'm still researching. Traction is controlled by the computer but a switch is what I need to find.
Does a LS3 Tr6060 combo I got from a 11 Camaro have a tac module? I’m confused. Yes google has the info but it’s just overload. Can’t get a definite answer. The engine came with the mass air flow sensor, gas pedal, ecu and full wiring harness. Allegedly. After reading to much and overwhelming myself before I’ve even attempted anything, I have questions. Seems daunting ….
Yes, its dbw so it should have a tac module. Take a break, being new to this stuff and researching it takes you down different rabbit holes all at one time lol. Big reason why I didn't go in depth too much about each engine in this video. Wanted to keep it as simple as I could while trying to give as much info as I could.
Personally I like using the stock harnesses for all the swaps I done
Have fun. The days of needing to re work a harness to keep it cheap is long gone thanks to China lol
@@krustyclassicsgarage you right bro china did make it easy 1 of my customers had bought 1 it was bad but my other customers work fine and it was way easier than reworking the fuse block
It’s hard to sneak that harness from the crank sensor area behind the p/a pump at the wreckers! How u do it?
My genVLT swap L83 (5.3) makes 400 RWHP on 91 octane with only a cam and springs and tune I absolutely love it. There’s no LS 5.3 setup that I know of that will do that 🤷🏾♂️
@@J2A61 damn that’s good
I can buy a 02 6.0ls with a light lifter tap for 150.00 the put a oil pump in it im wanting to put it in a 95 obs what will I do about a computer and wiring harness thanks
Hey man, i'm out in Waco and hoping to soon pickup an LS for a 944 swap project. Looking to get as many details as possible about what motor
This video should give enough info to tell you which route to go
@@krustyclassicsgarage yea I was just watching thru it, definitely want to go aluminum, didn’t know if you had any rebuilds since you were location wise pretty close
@@ziggy760 I don't. I always have people I do swaps for bring me all of the parts including engine and transmission.
im planning on swapping my 944 with a 5.3 once i get access to a garage as the 2.5 dont make too much power, what t axle are you planning on using?
@@teriyaki_joe so I’ve since decided to dump the project… you will need a turbo trans axle and preferably one with lsd because who wants to do one wheel peels. Not to mention the adaptor kit is close to 3-4k without any ecu or wiring kit
I have am L59 I believe? E85 engine from 03 z71 burb. What's difference between this and a standard 03 5.3?
Flex fuel injectors
Can it be modded same as lq4 or whatever its non e85 brother is? Rods, cam, oil pump, pistons, and intake?
@@bigchief5171 Yes and you can swap the Flex-Fuel rails ,inj's, harness (diff plugs for inj.), ECU, etc. for gas also....everything is interchangeable for the most part...
5.3 gets down with posi and gears and overdrive
Which gen 3 truck manifold do you prefer, return style or return less?
Doesn't really matter. Returnless is just cleaner. Also, it depends on if you're running a return system or if your fuel pump is returnless.
@@krustyclassicsgarage I have alway understood that running a return style system is better for avoiding fuel system vapor lock, with you living in Texas you would know if that’s true or not? Thanks for the replay and great content, also just joined your fb group
@@wadebonhomme2142 haven't had an issue. All of the holley retro fit pumps are returnless that I've used
I have a gen 4 without afm vvt or dod on my ly2 4.8.. so it’s basically a gen 3 to me. Just a little more thump
Yes. There are some early 07 Gen 4s that are basically Gen 3s. Just didn't want to mention that or the Gen 3 H.O motors that came out in 05 because I didn't want it to get all confusing for new people.
The best ls is the one you can afford to put in.
Do you do swaps for clients
Would an LS4 FIT in a cimmaron?
Can you do a vvt delete without changing the camshaft?
No.
the ls3 has the most stock hp per any ls motor at 430hp stock i believe.
Best swap for a Buick Regal limited base model 1987
Budget $6000
Any info is appreciated
Ok what about a 400hp DRIFT capable engine. Target hp 400 whp. Na. Reverse flor water pump make it live a lil longer ? I don’t think anyone builds a drift spec 4 or 5 hp engine that could live for for a couple years. Hell I’d take 300 whp and couple years of daily in and maybe 4 events a year. First time viewer. Tbh I’m looking at an ecoboost 2.0 swap for me e36 coupe. Company out of Indiana has a swap kit and I can find those engines all day.
LS3… 400 wheel without swapping cam…
has anyone done gen 3 or 4 swap into a gen 5 vehicle before?
🤦♂️ started a gen 5 swap this week

I have a 09 trailblazer transmission out but brother in law has a 2000 corvette just collecting dust engine and transmission only 30k miles just they don’t have the title but been thinking about ls swapping my trailblazer since they don’t know what to do with the vette my question is it worth it or just find a better Vehicle for it?
Not sure. If your trailblazer was a v6 it may be too much work to drop the LS in it but I haven't done that so I can't say for sure.
I'm in the Killeen tx area and looking to build my first ls motor also
Hey man I have a car I would like you to do a swap for me !!!
6:14 my gen 4 doesnt have afm/dod
Early ones typically dont.
Gen 5 lt gas solutions are impossible
Well I am LS guy but I also am a Gen 2 LT1 guy and I have to disagree that the ls is the most stock horsepower actually the Gen 2 LT1 engine is the most stock horsepower engine Chevy ever produced in a small block Chevy forum because Chevy was lying about the stock horsepower from the early nineties up to 1997 on the LT1 Gen 2 engine but I guess that's my opinion anybody doesn't believe me you can look it up yourself
Pre LS era yes
so you just don't like the gen 4 or gen 5 just because you don't know anything about them.
This was PAINFUL to watch!!
Yes!
Is an lm7 5.3L a good swap for a firebird 85 ?
