Coca Cola founded its first bottling factory in India in 1950, just 3 years after India became independent. But soon after, India turned to socialism and began nationalizing many private companies, including Coca Cola. So how did Coca Cola escape the claws of India's socialist government and acquired 60% of India's beverage market share?

Fun Fact : When coca cola reentered India, it bought Indian brand Thums up which was most popular brand at that time. They did so to kill it so that coca cola could replace it. But when they did so, the market share held by Thums up was distributed between Coca Cola and Pepsi. To regain that market share back they had to relaunch Thums up again. Still today Thums up up is one of the most consumed drink in India alongside Coca cola, Pepsi and Sprite.

Eh, P.V Narasimha Rao was still a more or less puppet of the Gandhis who had opposed liberalization, he only did it because the forex reserve was running out and the economy was in dire straits as one of our major tranding partners, the Soviet's economy had collapsed.

Socialists didn't lose, they just changed their politics in 1991. Congress was in power in 1977 and 1991. They had to change because India had reserves for only 2 weeks of imports in 1991, and it was one of the requirements for IMF loan. Now the reserves is over 400 billion.

@Another One Are you talking about current GDP or the GDP back in the 60s. I highly doubt that even in the 60s Coca Cola Co. had a higher revenue than India's GDP. Also yes the governments of that time were incompetent and the govt till the early 90's was controlled by the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty. First it was Jawaharlal Nehru, then Indira Gandhi(Daughter of Nehru), then Rajiv Gandhi(Son of Indira Gandhi) and even today the great grandson of Nehru, Rahul Gandhi is a candidate in elections but seeing as their incompetence in governing for 3-4 full decades Congress today soesnt even have 10% seats in Parliament while the Bharatiya Janata Party, which is a subsidiary of the Janata Party which formed resistance to Indira Gandhi's dictatorial rule and then came into power after she lost the next elections.

The pre-Rao congress really was a demolishing factor for India. First they broke down Tata Air, which could today have been a world-class airline. Then, they cracked down on foreign companies like Coca Cola. These companies had to wait for 30 years to enter the Indian market.

    • @nuclearrdx4045

      Hmmm....not a demolishing factor.
India then was a protectionist economy meant to develop india's socio-economic base. It worked, maybe not 100%. But it worked for what it was supposed to. It developed the basic infra like electricity, edu institutes, connectivity etc. The current gen is benefitting from it post 90's eco liberalisation.Analyse the past within its context.

Oh, say! can you see by the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming; Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there: Oh, say! does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep, Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam, In fully glory reflected now shines in the stream: 'Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh, long may it wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave! And where is that band who so vauntingly swore That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion A home and a country should leave us no more? Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution! No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave: And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave. Oh, thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand Between their loved home and the war's desolation! Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto: "In God is our trust": And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Fact check: George Fernandez the guy you show in handcuffs 2:56 throwed coke out of India , not indira Gandhi . George Fernandez was from Jan sang opposition party to that of indira Gandhi
India before economic liberalisation had law ferra which used to demand foreign company such as coca cola n imb to restrain them from having majority share holder in in their own Indian subsidiary .

Great content! You missed the whole coca cola survival story after reenterting..they purchased thumsup and tried to shut it down as it was directly competing and dominating the world's favorite coca cola..but then public moved on to Pepsi which forced coca cola to get back thumsup which is still the most popular cola..

When cocacola came back to India they threatening their biggest Indian enemy 'Thumbs Up' to sold themselves to cocacala until they serve free drinks for a year. This complete killed a pure Indian brand. Now a day thumbs up is still more popular than cocacola, even after becoming a cocacola brand.

I have loved most of your videos. Quiet descriptive and perfect sync with the timeline. But in this case I find it somewhat hard to believe the statement "90% of Indians had access to Coca-Cola while 10% of the Indian villages had access to safe drinking water" the latter being true though. Perhaps a nuanced or silly understanding of India's real socio-economic conditions by the bureaucratic aristocrats.

2:04 90% of villages had access to coca cola? From where did you get this cause this sounds incredible. You're telling me that coca cola stores were established in villages all around the country from Himalayas to the jungles of Burma and people there had coca cola, first this is a logistical nightmare considering the shity transportation and infrastructure in India especially back in the 50s where the country was a shithole? And Even if you manage to bring products you are faced with the biggest obstacle of selling them. Legit sure no Indian could afford any drink, let's don't consider that energy drinks were an alien concept for the Indian culture.

India shot itself in the foot by embracing socialism and protectionism (China too till 1980). Anything before 1947 could be blamed on the English but remaining poor 70 years on is all on them. Singapore, equally poor at the time (also a former British colony) became a first world country by pursuing the exact opposite policy.

Capitalism did not spread around the world in 20th century as has been written infinitely in the first chapter of economics books. Capitalism has been here since whenever humans started trading which is basically forever, only the scale kept changing. If it was true that capitalism spread around the world in only the 20th century how is it that all languages have a word for a market for e.g. a bazaar? After all, a market and capitalism are two sides of the same coin.
