Not only am I surprised that the Coke/Pepsi rivalry goes so deep, but I'm actually shocked a video about this didn't exist yet. I thought I had just overlooked it.
I toured World of Coke (in Atlanta) in the Mid 1990's. They had vending machines at the end of the tour that contained beverages that they sold in other countries. I was fascinated by the different combinations that were not available in the United States at that time. Some of those beverages may still not be available currently in the US.
I went when I was a kid in the early 2000s. I loved getting to try sodas from other parts of the world. I would love to go again. I loved it more than going to Six Flags.
Great stuff! I would have liked to hear the story behind partnerships with restaurants, etc. (if not already covered elsewhere). I think many people have had that "we only carry pepsi products" conversation when asking for a coke or vice versa.
Phenomenal video - I would love to see a future video on Mountain Dew specifically. I feel that brand is a perfect encapsulation of how beverage brands attempt to make variants. Many know the popular Code Red and Voltage flavors, but actually there are over 50 different variants under the Mountain Dew brand. And then PepsiCo uses different distribution strategies to distinguish the flavors. Some are only sold in different regions of the country (White Out), some are only sold different times of the year (VooDew, Holiday Brew, Gingerbread Snap’d, DewSA, Fruit Quake, Summer Freeze) and some are only sold at a particular store (Baja blast at Taco Bell, sweet lighting at KFC-both former PepsiCo Subsidiaries-Dark Berry Bash at Applebees, Thrashed apple at Kroger, uproar at food Lion, legend at BW3). Overall the variety seems to be good for all parties involved. Consumers get to enjoy a huge variety of sodas (or increasing the likelihood that one of their absolute favorite flavors will be sold), restaurants have flavors unique to their store (bringing customers in who might shop elsewhere), and PepsiCo can increase overall brand sales thru novelty while having an incentive for restaurants to carry Pepsi products over Coke
Speaking of which, I would have loved to see a quick comparison between which restaurants carry Coke versus Pepsi. Almost all restaurants are exclusive to one or the other, so it is a good proxy for who is “winning” the cola wars. I believe most of the major restaurants are with Coke
Vote for it on the website in the description, it has really few votes and it seems like not a lot of people know that he uses that, and _not_ the comments to get suggestions. You don't need to sign in to vote.
My mom worked at Coke during the 80s and 90s so our house was exclusively Coke of course. She'd always bring home the newest flavors they came up with at the time like vanilla coke and surge for free. However we weren't allowed to go to places that served exclusively Pepsi like KFC or root for people sponsored by them either 😅
Can you cover things like where Coca-Cola and Pepsi have exclusive deals in place for various entities? LIke for example, You'll pretty much only find Coca cola products at McDonald's, Chick Fil A, Chipotle, etc. You'll find Pepsi at like Pizza joints and other areas. Can you list all the places that each of these are served at?
I’m a veteran of the Cola Wars (PepsiCo). The blind taste tests were legit. And guess Who was the overall winner: RC Cola. My favorite and still the best cola made.
You missed a couple, like Pepsi’s attempt at a low calorie soda in the late 70s/early 80s called “Pepsi Light.” It was flavored with a bit of lemon and had a slightly lower sugar content, I think. (Very old memories!) Also, doesn’t Coke own Mello-Yello? I always assumed that was their “citrus” entry. Surge was definitely an attempt to hit Mountain Dew hard, but it also felt like a way to strike back at Jolt Cola-which had twice the sugar and twice the caffeine (supposedly) of other sodas. In related news, I feel old. 😅
@@gabedom_ thanks 💜 She was one of a kind. She always made sure, growing up, that she had a couple of Nehi Peach for me, Diet Rite for my mom, and always plenty of RC. My first ice cream/“coke float” was with RC. Still the best of all I’ve had.
Some interesting things I noticed since I'm from Ireland. Coke don't have Dasani there, their water brand is Deep River Rock, which is bottled in Antrim, Ireland. Powerade is much more common there compared to Gatorade, in fact, Gatorade is quite rare to find in comparison. I recall variations of Mountain Dew becoming available only around 2010, and never got very popular.
On thing that I’m surprised was not discussed in this video is fast food market share. Currently, as far as I know, the only places you can get Pepsi from in terms of fast food in the U.S. are from the chains owned by Pepsi (KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell). It’s interesting to see this happen since it does operate as a form of advertising since people have to try your drink if it’s the only option. Edit: In the U.S.
In Australia Pepsi is available at KFC, Taco Bell, Domino's, Hoyts Cinemas, Red Rooster, Chicken Treat, Oporto, The Yiros Shop, Burrito Bar, Zambraro's, Grill'd, Salsa's and Mad Mex (among others). Coke is available at McDonalds, Hungry Jacks (Aussie version of Burger King), Subway, Guzman Y Gomez, Event Cinemas, Pizza Hut and Carl's Jr (among others). And thankfully none of the Australian chains have followed their UK counterparts and all of them still carry the full-sugar no-artificial-crap versions of Coke/Pepsi.
Costco's Food Court serves Pepsi there... if you count them as a fast food place. However, I cannot find a case of Pepsi in the smaller cans (my preference) at my local Costco, they only carry Coke or as a variety pack in small cans.
The weird one is Dr. Pepper as you often see it in Pepsi places like Taco Bell. It's one reason I used to eat taco bell so much (I no longer eat fast food). Any place with Dr. Pepper is a place I'll go. Crappy McDonald's had Dr. Pipp, or is it Mr. Pibb? I haven't been to mcdonald's in like 20 years, lol. Unfortunately when I was in the Navy, all Navy bases (in the U.S.) had only McDonald's on them. If could have switched services I would have LOL.
My great grandfather, who was from Appalachia, used to sing the "Mountain Dew" song all the time. "Mountain Dew" being an original name for moonshine/hootch. The song went like this: "They call it that good ol' mountain dew, those who refuse it are few, I'll shut up my mug if you fill up my jug, with that good ol' mountain dew."
Was always an interesting rivalry to follow. They both owned so much stuff, that I never even heard of some of those brands. I'm a Pepsi person & so is my family. Highly unique video.
I loved SURGE soda. At the time, I worked at a grocery store and in this store we had a small cafe. When they were building it and setting up their soda machine, I petitioned for SURGE to be given a spigot on the fountain. After much MUCH bellyaching by me and... really no one else, I got my SURGE spigot. I think I may have been the only one to ever use it, but I bought a large fountain SURGE every single day that I worked there up until the cafe closed around 2 years later.
This is wonderful. Appreciate your efforts to share such an detailed report with fantastic comparisons. Kindly share how the supply chain works for these two companies. Thank you.
You know a brand has clout, when they change a whole countries legal system just to do business with that one western company.. coke in China in case it's still confusing. Literally got the gov to change so they could do business there. China was just afraid they were gonna end up like South America.
@@ak_getright9905 I'm pretty sure you missed the point of the synonym, Coke is used as soda or pop in other regions of the US. TL;DR: in that region, replace the word soda with Coke.
As someone who's drank an obscene amount of soda in their life. I'll crack open a can of coke and take a second to just enjoy the smell of it before I actually pour it I don't do that with any other soda even the ones also owned by the coca cola company. They really cracked the code with Coke.
Happy to find another Coca Cola addict. It is my only vice and the people who know me are always very amused (and worried) at the level of pleasure it gives me. Pepsi does not come anywhere near that.
Another interesting note is Dr Pepper. Neither company owns them, but they both distribute and sell it in their machines. I think there is something in the contract maybe as to who can sell it where?
Just want to point out that when all these sodas changed to "High Fructose Corn Syrup", Pepsi's "Sierra Mist" Still used Cane Sugar, which was something I really Valued. However I WOULD later realize that despite using Cane Sugar, the actual amount of grams of sugar in Sierra Mist was 2-3x What was in Sprite or 7UP, which was not something I could just ignore
Correction: Sierra Mist used HFCS from launch until 2010, then changed to cane sugar from 2010 to 2014. From 2014 to 2016, it used a mixture of Stevia and cane sugar. For the 2016 thru 2018 variant as Mist Twist, it reverted to HFCS. From the 2018 to 2023 final version as Sierra Mist, it used cane sugar once more.
Yeah I'm gonna call bullshit on that 2x - 3x the amount of sugar. I don't doubt it had a bit more sugar, but 2x - 3x is an outrageous over-exaggeration.
Let the competition go on. We, the consumers, are always benefitted. The more the competition, the better products and the more options we have. And as always, it is always fun to watch such videos.
I prefer Pepsi over Coke. However, Sprite has always been my favorite lemon-lime soda. Sierra Mist was good and pretty refreshing too. I really don’t like Starry at all though.

I think a video on the market of different energy drinks would be super interesting because there's been such a boom of it in the last 5 years with bang energy and I think after them so many other things of came up or existing brands have expanded a lot into the energy drink space
Coke is pure classics, and it brings that childhood memories, spirit of holidays and joy. Pepsi always tasted too "chemical" for me, like it's pretending to be Coke, but in an odd way.
How about a comparison video between different auto parts stores, e.g., Auto Zone, O'Reilly's, NAPA, and/or Advanced Auto. :) Great job! We love your videos and look forward to them each week.
I was a kid when my mom brought home 'Pepsi light' in 1976; basically lemon pepsi. But it wasnt for sale yet. She worked at pepsico and it was in development stage at the time, so she was handing out samples to friends. I loved it, and was even a big fan of Pepsi Twist in the early 2000s! Before that it was always Mountain Dew. To my pallette, Coke tastes like incongrous different chemicals mixed together, but Pepsi tastes le its something more, perhaps more complete of a flavor. I loved Tab, but hated Diet Coke and diet pepsi.
Agreed. It's because they aren't real spring water. They are "purified" water, or more accurately, tap water run through filters. Real spring water is much better.
Coke has it's own paramilitary group that protects it's trade routes. If you hijack a Coke truck- they won't call the police, but their private military force to get you.
I drive a coke truck and I'm pretty sure if my truck was stolen they would just send someone to pick me up, load up a new truck, then have me complete the deliveries. The trucks have cameras and GPS trackers. You wouldn't get far.
I have also never seen anything remotely resembling a military at my truck yard. It's sugar water. No one is risking their life for a beverage. There is a security gate though. We don't want a stranger to get in and poison the coke.
@@GardenerEarthGuy I have found no information supporting your claims. A single truckload would never warrant that sort of response. An entire distribution plant on the other hand, might.

For some reason coca cola has an old people after taste to me. Pepsi tastes like pure sugar aftertaste, which is exactly what I want with a sugar drink.
Back when I really craved soda, I preferred Coke over Pepsi. Pepsi had an unusual flavor I never got used to really. Nowadays, if have a soda at all, I’ll have a Dr. Pepper or Mountain Dew.
The video I have been waiting for years. If anyone has been watching this channel you probably seen my past comments of massive love for Coke and my hate for Pepsi and it’s products. I love the Coca-Cola company so much that I don’t buy any PEPSI products from foods to drinks. I refuse them in my home, no one I allowed to bring them into my home or JEEP
I've noticed that companies tended to have equivalents to each other's drinks, my university carries exclusively Pepsi products so I would only find rockstar when ever I wanted an energy drink. Also worked at AMC for quite a while and that was Coca-Cola exclusive.

Not only am I surprised that the Coke/Pepsi rivalry goes so deep, but I'm actually shocked a video about this didn't exist yet. I thought I had just overlooked it.
My grandfather was a POW during the Cola Wars. He still cries when we ask about his experience
Glad he made it back home. A lot of good men were lost in that war.
Post traumatic soda disorder is nothing to laugh at
I toured World of Coke (in Atlanta) in the Mid 1990's.
They still have that exhibit in 2023
The honeydew fanta from Thailand was one of the best things I've ever tasted

Nothing better than an ice cold Coke with a bag of Lays chips from PepsiCo. Great combo

Definitely a little bit of irony there.
Aldi's chips taste better and are not as greasy!
Warren Buffett would agree with you.
Great stuff!
I would have liked to hear the story behind partnerships with restaurants, etc. (if not already covered elsewhere).
I think many people have had that "we only carry pepsi products" conversation when asking for a coke or vice versa.
Especially since PepsiCo owned KFC & Taco Bell for a while.

I second this. Mountain Dew itself has plenty of content to discuss.
🤮Mountain Dew
Maui Mt Dew at Dollar General of all places is awesome
Truly the debate of the century.
This feels like the Season Finale of Company Man
I’m a veteran of the Cola Wars (PepsiCo). The blind taste tests were legit. And guess Who was the overall winner: RC Cola. My favorite and still the best cola made.
RC Cola doesn't get enough credit.
Dr pepper is the best!
@8bitkid835 honestly, it's the most wide-appeal cola. People have opinions on Coke and Pepsi, but everyone loves the Dr.

I thought Mello Yello was their version of Mountain Dew because it's the closest Cocoa Cola product to tasting and looking like Mountain Dew.
Yeah, they do own Mellow Yellow. Don't know why that didn't come up.
I was confused how Pepsi max was never mentioned in this video
Both Mello-Yello and Surge belong to Coca-Cola. They were both rivals for Mountain Dew. Mello-Yello is still available today.
I'd love to see more in-depth with more sodas and other drinks, and tbh I've always been a Pepsi guy, I like that little extra sweetness
Been waiting years for this video
As an RC guy, i say let em fight it out.
My 2nd cousin (RIP Doris) lived on RC & I can’t think of RC without her.

Does Deep River Rock taste gross? I ask because Dasani is the worst tasting American bottled water brand lmao.
Dasani IS terrible. To be fair, Aquafina is also terrible. Both actually make me more thirsty after drinking them.
I assume you guys drink Guinness like we drink soda. And I respect that.
In the U.K. only Diet Pepsi in kfc :/
Pepsi is also At Little Ceasers
So happy Vault got a shout out. That was my favorite thing ever when i was kid :D
My great grandfather, who was from Appalachia, used to sing the "Mountain Dew" song all the time. "Mountain Dew" being an original name for moonshine/hootch.
The song went like this:
"They call it that good ol' mountain dew,
those who refuse it are few,
I'll shut up my mug
if you fill up my jug,
with that good ol' mountain dew."
Surprised Mellow Yellow was not included in this, especially the push they had in the Days of Thunder movie
Surge is the beverage of my childhood. I miss Josta too!
This is wonderful. Appreciate your efforts to share such an detailed report with fantastic comparisons. Kindly share how the supply chain works for these two companies. Thank you.

An ice cold Mexican Coke on a hot day is as good as it gets.
I was hoping for a segment about coca cola’s “OK soda” from the 90s.
The world was a lesser place when they discontinued OK. I miss their phone line
You know a brand has clout when a whole region of the US calls ANY soda, including Pepsi, "Coke"
You know a brand has clout, when they change a whole countries legal system just to do business with that one western company.. coke in China in case it's still confusing. Literally got the gov to change so they could do business there. China was just afraid they were gonna end up like South America.
Cringe, pretty sure most people don’t call sprite or root beer “coke”
@@ak_getright9905 Sprite is owned by Coca-Cola though.
@@ak_getright9905 I'm pretty sure you missed the point of the synonym, Coke is used as soda or pop in other regions of the US. TL;DR: in that region, replace the word soda with Coke.

The great battle of our grandparents, parents and our time continues.
As someone who's drank an obscene amount of soda in their life. I'll crack open a can of coke and take a second to just enjoy the smell of it before I actually pour it I don't do that with any other soda even the ones also owned by the coca cola company. They really cracked the code with Coke.
I've drunk both and prefer Coke but will take Pepsi if that's what they offer, but will not take Dr. Pepper.
Happy to find another Coca Cola addict. It is my only vice and the people who know me are always very amused (and worried) at the level of pleasure it gives me.
Pepsi does not come anywhere near that.
I was subscribed at 250000 it’s good to see it grow to this extent
Another interesting note is Dr Pepper. Neither company owns them, but they both distribute and sell it in their machines. I think there is something in the contract maybe as to who can sell it where?
I'm looking forward to Coca Cola trying to take over the porridge market in it's rivalry with Pepsi.
As I kid I preferred Pepsi but as an adult I prefer Coke.
Correction:
Sierra Mist used HFCS from launch until 2010, then changed to cane sugar from 2010 to 2014.
I am interested in the beginning of this channel, and how it became succesful. Love your videos!

Worth mentioning their two water brands (Aquafina and Dasani) are 1a and 1b for the worst bottled water out there

7. Vittel, cristalline , Valvert ( mineral water)

I've noticed that companies tended to have equivalents to each other's drinks, my university carries exclusively Pepsi products so I would only find rockstar when ever I wanted an energy drink. Also worked at AMC for quite a while and that was Coca-Cola exclusive.
