I like the way you do things man, no pretentious bullshit like alot of "drummers" on here. As someone that's has recently gotten back into drumming after 15 years of being out I enjoy learning from your videos. You present things in a way us common self taught folks can understand!! Keep up the good work brother!!
I'm in exactly the same situation, only just got back on a kit a few months ago after a break of about 10 years!! love all his Vids, brilliant drummer and completely down to earth
I just have one thing to say.You are a legend. You should go down as one of the greatest youtubers of our time. You would honestly murder any other drummer on youtube.Drumming heroes:Joey JordisonDave LombardoJosh SteffenMike Portnoy
I know people will criticize and say "far better drummers out there." I've even heard you humbly say there is better. But what I love about you is your genuineness and compassion for percussion/drumming. Your consistency is astonishing! And personally, I believe your drum covers are by far the best, performance-wise, and high quality sound! Thanks Josh!
Video request(s): Fill or pattern tutorials. Like you did in this video with "the typical Korn pattern." Pick 2 or 3 simple patterns or fills, and show how you can simply embellish or enhance them. Cause your "trademark fill" sounds fucking ridiculously awesome. And to have something like that under your belt keeps the confidence high and motivates you.
i remember you did a video like this before liie different variations of this and i was struggling to figure out how to do those fills lol cause everything i know is self taught like flams and all that but after i watched that video it helped me a lot and im grtting better at doing those fills where i have to add my foot thanks a lot man you're videos are really helpful bro
Dope shit. Kinda Vinnie-ish. Reminds me of some of the shit he started doing on Far beyond driven and Trendkill. One beat that always blew my mind was the opening to 13 steps. You nail it, maybe you could break that one down for us someday. Or, the "system destroyed" part of Slaughtered, you know what I'm talking about ;)
+minitzonthesun Man that is an awesome request. I've always been blown away by that portion of Slaughtered on drums. I couldn't for the life of me, quite hear how it was done when I first started playing. I admit I still have some trouble with it, and would love to see a breakdown of the parts.
Love this video, it's been very helpful in following what you do. I love to see a break down of the fills you do for Korn's Ball Tongue and Faget videos you have posted. Yeah, I'm a slow learning and need things broken down into chunks I can pick up. Thanks for the consideration.
I have a trademark fill that I've never heard anyone do ever. Its basically a 3over4 polyrhythm on the toms plus double kicks in between the 3 count. At first i did it only with 4 on the floor but then built it up to where i did kind of like a shuffle kick during it. Like the hot for teacher beat. Its kind of hard to explain but i did that at a show once during technical difficulties and i got surrounded by these kids trying to figure out what i was doing. I actually have it recorded to an intro to a song this band i was in was doing. So i guess you can say if anybody steals it i can prove that i did it first. Lol
Joshhhhhhhhhhh!!! Awesome. Thanks. I'm going to learn this for sure. I was wondering is this the same beat you use when you do the rolls across the toms in the blisters exist slipnot song you do? Like how Portnoy does a roll on the toms. Like mini triplets. I don't know what it's called but want to try and learn it. It's fucking cool sounding. Your playing inspires me to want to practice more. My go to when I can't figure out the beat. Thanks for all the time you put into these vids for us drummers out there.
I'm currently using a drum fill technique made famous by some dude having the best week ever! Honestly, good stuff. Agreed, I have a go-to also. I'm digging the 3note2kick pattern, though \m/
I dont play drums, i play guitar, but i totally understand what you are saying. My dad plays drums and ive noticed the same with him, he has his own little bass kick in between notes while i play guitar, which i try to match using neighbor notes. Its super interesting how the smallest detail sets other people apart from one another. Cool video man (;
you're awesome josh...and stylishly you remind me of lost horizon drummer christian nyquist. i wish you'd do a lost horizon-song in the future (like heart of storm or more progressive highlander).
Could you do a video on some of your favorite crash/ride patterns? I always connect a alternating ride pattern to Neil Peart so I was just wondering what you'd do to add some mustard to the basic thrashy beats
when u first did yours at 1:24 reminded me of Still Frame by Trapt. Good shit tho. Every drummer is unique and has there own kinda beat. Learned some good stuff from your videos. Thanx and keep wm coming.
Bro, first of all you rock. I grew up loving Joey Jordison and Slipknot, the way he plays the drums is crazy. You adopt that immaculate shit, kickin' it hard one on one. But I have to ask, you ever listened to Genesis? This is were my love for the drums really started. When I was a little dude my dad always did these crazy solo's on the dash when we were cruisin' on the highway back in Holland, Amsterdam. I would love to hear a song of your choice by Genesis, just because.(probably your subscribers won't like it as much as me) I feel Genesis were one of the few who could lay emphasis on the drums and the guitar, back in the day. The late version of Firth of the Fifth is a really great one (one of the Live in Europe tour). Keep on doing what you do, you often make my day! PEACE
I wanna hear you cover more blasty songs like thy art is murder or rings of Saturn. I haven’t seen you do the the “dirk blast” which you really should it’s a more unique blast.
Fuck, I'm now seeing this Trademark Fill of urs... I freaking struggle doing this... I do more of the 2 toms/2 pedals, not the 3 toms/1 pedal technique... Ima just keep watching this over and over and practice it more... It's an old vid but thanks for posting... Keep at it!!!
Nice video concept, would like to see more of it in the future ! Keep it up ! Was Igor Cavalera a source of inspiration to you during your early drumming days ?
very nice Josh was curious to see if you would give a video explaining hi hat, stick work on the hi hat noticed you've done it in a few videos of accents and as a feel those who drum find their own techniques and their own timing I enjoy Joy watching Carter Beauford of Dave Matthews Band has a pretty good theory on how he breaks his stick work up. I mean I know you're a metal drummer was just curious if you had any insight thank you once again Josh
5 stroke roll?? Triplets on the hand leading with the right and 2 on the feet so it’s groups of 5. That’s my guess. I know I’ve heard that before a couple times.
Nice, you've made your own way to play those drum fills, it shows your creativity ;). Would you later do a tutorial on any Dream Theater drum fill or song? I'm sure a lot of people would love it, later bro :)
+Josh Steffen Something like The Dance of Eternity, Octavarium, Fatal Tragedy, or even stuff like The Count of Eternity, you've done covers for all those songs bro, I'm sure it's not that difficult for you
Ugh I can't spell lol. Great Video! What i like to do when i improvise is the same thing as your move except i do feet first. guess i should change it haha
your trademark is to watch the camera while playing
More like nodding at the camera prior to starting to bang.
and snare hit beforw starting the cover is a trademark too
*turns to the mic*
'Aight'
Kiddowesth bro I read this and then looked at the screen and Josh said aight and I just died😂😂
Nick Jeffreys same 😂😂😂😂
Right after I read this, he did that
You've gotten a lot better at talking to the camera. It's like you're not too nervous to talk now, which is pretty good.
Yes a little better.
Josh Steffen i feel like im a good drummer im learning but i want to be better better on double bass at everything
I like how you're just calmly talking and then randomly whip out the Tom Hunting beat like a boss... Then just keep talking nothing even happened 😂😂
;)
+Josh Steffen How dare you reply with just a winky face! What a jerk! heheh.
+Josh Steffen yeah dude, I'm so offended right now 😜
Luke Datema C'mon Luke, let's kick the shit outta this guy!
+Luke Datema Damn, man, so true!!! hahaha!!
I like the way you do things man, no pretentious bullshit like alot of "drummers" on here. +Grindfather that's awesome man ;)
Quite honored over here
Suggestion Video : "TALKING SHIT Coop3r Drumm3r" .... ;) JK
;)
I would pay to see that!
+Vincent Repel I cant fuckin stand coop3r.. dont know why.. just ugh no thanks
+jayce keffer Can't stand the guy either, he's a cheerleader, not a drummer...
too many stick tricks not enough drumming
I love the way your kit sounds..you play smooth..I'll be watching you more often..
I know people will criticize and say "far better drummers out there." I've even heard you humbly say there is better. But what I love about you is your genuineness and compassion for percussion/drumming. Your consistency is astonishing! +eternityag thanks ;)

1:22 proceeds to play Vinnie Paul
I approve lol
i remember you did a video like this before liie different variations of this and i was struggling to figure out how to do those fills lol cause everything i know is self taught like flams and all that but after i watched that video it helped me a lot and im grtting better at doing those fills where i have to add my foot thanks a lot man you're videos are really helpful bro
as ever hugely useful, informative and entertaining. you are making my drum journey one a will never forget. love this stuff dude
+Max- Thrust ;)

brilliant as always! I could watch your playing all day
You should do Critical Acclaim by Avenged Sevenfold.
Oh hells yeah he should!
Yes I love that one
Practice and have fun !! That's the most important. I agree Josh
Put some earplugs on!!!
this is sooo pleasing to listen to. Love it!
you are very quickly becoming my favorite drummer man, keep it up!
Every time I watch a video of yours (and I do instantly as I get the popup) I become more and more of a fanboy than myself.
uuuhhm ... well. My mouth just fell in the cellar when u started YOUR trademark fill..
Amazing as always
Maybe some Gojira covers?
+Aleskyer Yeah :3
yes oroborus or explosia would be awesome
Some link would be great though
+Léo Rébéna Right? Embrace the world? Maybe Inward Momement
+Aleskyer YES!
Three thumbs down?
I GUARANTEE these three people can't do anything in this video! Great video Josh.
Them mics are making dem tom's sound sweet!
Man you are Rad .Hope you find all the success you want to find .
This fill oddly sounds like a variation of the opening drum groove to Sepulnation
The new mics sound great!
You have a great talent,.. Keep enjoy it!!!
Your my favorite UA-cam drummer man. Your so smooth and consistent
Thanks

Awesome!! Glad to see more tutorials , going to straight to the kit when I get off work? Also can I get any reviews on GMS snare from anyone?
Ha, every time I see that fill, i'll think of you Josh!...Keep up the solid work brother !
Suggestion Video - Maybe you'll talk a bit how do you prepare to learn new song? I mean every step you do to reach the level of cover you want to.
I have a trademark fill that I've never heard anyone do ever. Its basically a 3over4 polyrhythm on the toms plus double kicks in between the 3 count. I think you are definitely my drum teacher :;)BRAVO pour le travail et surtout merci, ca m'aide beaucoup à progresser :;)
;)
You should make more videos like this, some lessons for beginners or something like that. It is interesting to watch
awesome man, youre a great drummer and cool dude!
Sooo clooose...and hey ya, Go Pack! dontcha know..er no?
I dont play drums, i play guitar, but i totally understand what you are saying. My dad plays drums and ive noticed the same with him, he has his own little bass kick in between notes while i play guitar, which i try to match using neighbor notes. Can you discuss, or provide references, for how Silveria used the kick drum, especially in relation to Fieldy's slap?
you're awesome josh...and stylishly you remind me of lost horizon drummer christian nyquist. i wish you'd do a lost horizon-song in the future (like heart of storm or more progressive highlander).
Thank you very much for this video, I was looking for this kind of video where explains that rifs even now, this will help me to be a good drumer :))
Down With the Sickness drum pattern was also probably done before. they technically didn't claim it but they're known for it :p
Suggestion : Double bass exercise video with a few beat variations ( intresting twist or something) ?
Could you do a video on some of your favorite crash/ride patterns? I always connect a alternating ride pattern to Neil Peart so I was just wondering what you'd do to add some mustard to the basic thrashy beats
I’m using this on the debut album my band will come out with! And when it comes out I will give you a shout out.
Cool fill sounds killer!!
Great videos, man. I was wondering if you could do a Pig Destroyer song. Preferably their song Terrifyer. They seem up your alley.
I'm mainly an A7X so Beast and the Harlot, Almost Easy and Gunslinger are some suggestions I have, still a great video dude.
when u first did yours at 1:24 reminded me of Still Frame by Trapt. Good shit tho. Every drummer is unique and has there own kinda beat. Learned some good stuff from your videos. Thanx and keep wm coming.

i heard that killpop groove back in like 2011 from kevin boutot of the acacia strain.
Could you explain how to play beginning of “Territory” by Sepultura please? 😊😊😊
Josh, ever thought of doing covers of Kreator? I think it would be very cool
"A couple people watching" hahaha
Could you do a video on your double bass technique?
You're so good I can't keep up 🤣
Very cool.
You should do a video for drummers that are just starting out and easy stuff to learn
I have a timing video coming. I made it a while ago.
Bro, first of all you rock.
I grew up loving Joey Jordison and Slipknot, the way he plays the drums is crazy.

Keep on doing what you do, you often make my day!
PEACE
Thanks! Don't listen to genesis but know they are a heavy influence on dream theater.
+Erik I know you could do way better than this... I would gladly set you up bro. Expenses paid..
I ready want a download or somewhere I can listen to your old band mongo seven
do a video of that triplet roll you do with the bass drums and symbol to the right, you always do it
master master
You. Fucking. Rule.
Wear some ear plugs
I wanna hear you cover more blasty songs like thy art is murder or rings of Saturn. I haven’t seen you do the the “dirk blast” which you really should it’s a more unique blast.
Hey Josh, would you be willing to cover the song 'Till Death To Us Part by Exodus? Or anything from Bonded by Blood or Pleasures of the Flesh.
I'd like to see some videos talking about reverse rolls and polyrhythmic patterns. talking shit or otherwise.
You're awesome dude
Fuck, I'm now seeing this Trademark Fill of urs... I freaking struggle doing this... I do more of the 2 toms/2 pedals, not the 3 toms/1 pedal technique... Ima just keep watching this over and over and practice it more... It's an old vid but thanks for posting... Keep at it!!!
you are so awesome ! I love it 💯
love the videos... could you do Lars version of Hangar 18
I think you'd have a lot of fun making some Disturbed covers if you're into them!
Maybe even Veil Of Maya too!
Nice video concept, would like to see more of it in the future ! Keep it up !
Was Igor Cavalera a source of inspiration to you during your early drumming days ?
Not much. My first album was roots, which I really enjoyed. I was at that level by then.
very nice Josh was curious to see if you would give a video explaining hi hat, stick work on the hi hat noticed you've done it in a few videos of accents and as a feel
those who drum find their own techniques and their own timing I enjoy Joy watching Carter Beauford of Dave Matthews Band has a pretty good theory on how he breaks his stick work up. I mean I know you're a metal drummer was just curious if you had any insight thank you once again Josh
+Rebal Seven perhaps that'll be covered in timing tricks.
Josh do some cover from gojira like liquid fire or vacuity your the best on youtube man never see someone do a chi cover so tight
Could you consider making a video of some generic thrash beats? Or any genre really. So it can help people like me to learn different types of beats.
Make a video about your double bass technique!
Tom hunting my favorite drummer and exodus my favorite band lml
why don't you play some heretic anthem josh ?
exactly
fuck yes!
I will..
+Josh Steffen ;)
+Josh Steffen the double bass is real
eletronic drums , what you think abalt it?
5 stroke roll?? Triplets on the hand leading with the right and 2 on the feet so it’s groups of 5. That’s my guess. I know I’ve heard that before a couple times.
Nice, you've made your own way to play those drum fills, it shows your creativity ;). Would you later do a tutorial on any Dream Theater drum fill or song? I'm sure a lot of people would love it, later bro :)
Good idea but where to start!
+Josh Steffen Something like The Dance of Eternity, Octavarium, Fatal Tragedy, or even stuff like The Count of Eternity, you've done covers for all those songs bro, I'm sure it's not that difficult for you
Great video! Maybe someday the 1 guy that dislikes all of these videos can be half as good.
Break down the two slipknot licks please
Can you explain the technique of painkiller..?:D
Ugh I can't spell lol. Great Video! What i like to do when i improvise is the same thing as your move except i do feet first. guess i should change it haha
drumming basic tutorials? tips and trick for beginners?
Badass!
Love it!!

FUCKING GREAT!!! I HAVE TO PRACTICE!!
THANKS JOSH, KEEP ON LIKE THIS
