A Look Back at the 2012-2014 Oakland Athletics | Stat Stories

  • The Oakland Athletics were pretty mediocre for a number of years. They had some promising young pitchers in 2011, and Billy Beane decided to trade those guys away for a number of prospects. It looked like the A's were finally going to rebuild from the ground up. But that's not what happened at all.
    In this video I look at how the A's somehow won a division title against two heavy weight teams in the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels. The A's managed to win thanks to some incredible rookie pitching from guys like Jarred Parker and Tommy Milone. And they would win the division again the next season and a wild card berth after that. Josh Donaldson, Brandon Moss, and Derek Norris were some of the breakout stars of the team that lived off of drawing walks.
    But then, Billy Beane blew up the roster again. All stars were traded away, and few of the players they received in return panned out. Could the Oakland Athletics stayed competitive if they kept the roster together?

    As a A’s fan 2014 made me cry that was such a brutal loss the weak hits and the stolen bases our players getting injured. The best part that people don’t realize about 2014 is that the A’s were getting on National Tv, 2 Sunday night baseball games bunch of games on fox. It goes On and on. Man 2012-2014 was definitely the era when I started following baseball more. I’ve been in the Bay Area all my life and all my friends were giants fans but the A’s were my team I grew to love. That 2014 season could’ve taken us to the World Series if we never had those post ASG trades and that 2014 WC game still breaks my heart. I’m super excited now for our future and our current team but I wish that 2014 squad could’ve stayed in tact! Green collar baseball forever 💪🏽

    Hey Bobby, great video! I only really started following baseball 5 years ago, so I kinda missed the A’s during their heyday, but I’d always seen clips of Donaldson and Cespedes on the team yet I’d never known how truly good the team was. Also, I’ve been watching your stuff for a while now, and I just realized something: I don’t think you’ve ever mentioned who your favorite team is (and if you did, I guess I don’t remember)! So, I was wondering, which is it? As always, keep up the good work man!

    As a lifelong A’s fan, the Donaldson and Cespedes trades are the two most unforgettable and unforgivable in my time as a fan. They’ve once again rose to contenders with trades but I can’t help but see a parallel between 12-14 and 18-21 where these teams are great in the regular season, fail in the playoffs, and get blown up once the contract extensions are up. I fear that guys like Olson, Chapman, Canha, Bassit, Manaea, Laureano will get traded for prospects, once again signaling a rebuild. It’s very frustrating

  • @mcpootis7796
    @mcpootis7796 4 роки тому +2

    When you were talking about where the 2012-13 A's teams ranked in pitching and offense and said the offense was even better in 2014, my face went o_O. But then you put down the disclaimer that said *should have said was better until August, and I immediately shouted to myself "Oh god oof"! In all honesty, I'm more triggered by the Sonny Gray trade than Donaldson as an A's fan. Gray was traded just a deadline before their playoff-bound 2018 team and now our rotation could've been Gray / Manaea / Montas / Luzardo / Puk :O.

    • @EvanEscher
      @EvanEscher 4 роки тому +1

      The sonny trade seemed bad at the time, but Kaprelian, Mateo, and Fowler still have potential. Plus the Yanks ended up trading him after 2018.

    • @mcpootis7796
      @mcpootis7796 4 роки тому +1

      Now it’s looking like Mateo will be out of the organization as soon as the rosters unfreeze, as he has suitors in the Royals and Tigers. I’m thankful that Kaprielian is on track to be an exciting bullpen depth piece hopefully when baseball returns this year. The Yanks pretty much wrecked Sonny with terrible pitcher coaching and trying to turn him into a Masahiro Tanaka clone by insisting he throw a lot more of his lesser effective offspeed pitches. He had a stellar second half with the Reds last year and the numbers he put up are pretty close to Jack Flaherty, and there’s still room for growth.

    The crazy thing about the A's is they could be a contender consistently had they kept their players. It seems to me they are a team stuck in purgatory because seemingly, they are too quick to pull the trade trigger instead of letting the team figure it out like say, the Yankees. Who pull off trades but keep their important players.

    (A's fan here) Here is the big picture to look at with the A's, you have to go back to the year Zito walked and went to the Giants. From 2007-2011 it was mixed with an Ownership change, and really BAD drafting. We only got lucky when we drafted Sonny Gray, the majority of the higher prospects just sucked. 2012 was the unexpected but LUCKY year that the A's had caught lightning in a bottle. They were meh at best the first half and really good the 2nd half. The 2012 year also marked a few issues that A's always had, injured pitchers. No matter what some pitcher would just get hurt which made matters worse. 2013 turned out to be a lucky year for the A's, limited injuries and decent pitching. They didn't need to acquire any major pieces for the the team had jelled nicely. However what happened during Spring Training in 2014 doomed the team and the future. 2014 was the year the A's would do it, BUT Jarrod Parker and AJ Griffen went down for Tommy John, that decimated the pitching rotation. Also mix in Bartolo walked to the Mets that fall didn't help either. Instead the A's signed Scott Kazmir. The A's also acquired a star closer in Jim Johnson to shut down the last inning for us, this guy was crap and really hurt when we had let Grant Balfour walk as well. This team was very good for the first half. BUT EVERY one who talks about the teams failures in trades doesn't realize that INJURIES didn't help. No matter what, someone on this team got hurt and right when the team had a great lead in the standings they pulled the big trades for Hamel and Samardzija. But here is the deal that people don't realize, these 2 pitchers were brought in to stablize the rotation. Samardzija did just that, BUT Hamel was not what we needed him to be. Then to top it 3rd SP Jesse Chavez was on gas, he started to lose his edge and became a pumpkin. This is why the A's needed Lester. They needed Lester for TWO reasons, 1) To beat f**king Verlander and 2) to win a winner take all WC game if it came to that. Remember the bad drafting i mentioned earlier, yeah you can't acquire Lester if you don't have anything to give. No team wants your trash heap. Literally the A's had NO trade chips, and then to mix in the fact of a cheap ownership that really didn't want to spend, go figure. If they had an extra 10million to spend they could have sent it to Boston and say "here's some $$$, will that get Lester?"
    Then comes the other fact, the A's heavily invested in cheap PLATOON type players. Guys who bat well against RH pitchers, but suck against LH pitchers, mix in a guy who can do the opposite and boom you got an All Star 1/2 player. The trade with Lester included Johnny Gomes, who was a great hitter and mixed well with Sam Fuld. Heres the problem, he SUCKED after the deadline.Then to top it All Star Closer Doolittle got hurt, Brandon Moss had hip issues, and then the worst thing to occur was the injury to the BEST back up outfielder in Craig Gentry who recieved a MAJOR concussion and would NEVER recover from this injury would come back to haunt the A's in the WC. Not to mention Fan Favorite Coco Crisp having neck injury issues that he sustained in May. By the Wild Card, the Team was injured and on fumes. Too many good players hurt, and here's the deal people state the Lester Trade was a failure, it was not. He came in, shut down the Royals through 8.2 innings and really only got skrewed by Luke Gregerson who blew the 6 run lead the A's had. To be honest, the A's couldn't compete with the Roster they had in 2015. They didn't have the money and really what killed the team in 2015 was simply the Bull Pen, the starting pitchers on the A's were the best in the league, but when they handed it over to the Bullpen the pen would just give the opposing team a win. There are so many variables to what happened and is an example of what you can do to make the situation better. Heres the other side of the coin post this run, their losses in 2015-2017 gained them the needed prospects to compete in the game. They got top tier prospects in AJ Puk, they got great trade returns with Jesus Luzardo, they really had the opportunity to really build the team from the ground up. There is no other team in baseball (except the Dodgers), who can compete on the level of the a's with their farm assets. They made a lot of great, post Donaldson Trades and I think that trade was a more compete now deal, and you have to look at the after trades to really see the effect. Sometimes the pieces go thru a few iterations to see their effects. So we got Brett Lawrie and who did we get back JB Wendelken who has become a rather good bullpen asset. Barreto could be seen as trade bait for something else we need. If you ever want to have fun go through the steps of the Mark Mulder trade the A's made with the St Louis Cardinals. Players on the Current 2020 Roster are still to this day linked through players traded from Mark Mulder.

    I still remember getting a woken up by my friend to a call freaking out telling me Cespedes had been traded. Awful move. Broke the offense after that. We went from the best team in baseball to 88 wins and squeaking in as the second wild card. That Donaldson trade is one of the worst of all time and is the only reason Barreto is still on the club. They’ve given up on so many so fast (like Profar after 1 season) But Barreto stays and I’m convinced they don’t want to admit complete defeat with that horrendous trade.
