IMPORTANT: This 8,000 mile interval is recommended for me ONLY. These tests are not broad recommendations and are individual specific. DO NOT attempt longer drain intervals unless you complete a test.

I've never tested my oil, but I've used Amsoil SS 5W30 ever since my 2015 Ford F150 FX4 2.7L "Nano" was new. I've always changed my own oil every 15k miles and my Amsoil filter every 7.5k miles. My odometer recently surpassed 240k miles. I drive my truck very hard and I've never had a mechanical failure. No warranty claims, nothing. I use Amsoil in EVERYTHING else too! lol! From my power washer to my zero-turn mower and my new tractor. Can't beat it! Oh, and I love my truck! lol! Got lots of mods, etc., I'll never get rid of her. New trucks are too damned expensive nowadays anyway. I'll just buy a brand new motor (or tranny) if I have too when the time comes and just keep on trucking! Her nickname is "Jackrabbit," and she's fast AF! lol!

I’ve been using Amsoil since 1991 and I am a dealer. Amsoil is very clear to not add oil additives or you will heavily reduce the oil change interval. I have never added oil additives to my 2021 Cummins and currently at 400,000 miles still runs like the day I bought it. I go 20,000 mile oil changes using 5w40 signature.

Thank you for the comment! I am doing my next change without the AR9100 additive. I was not aware of Amsoils official opinion on the matter, thanks for sharing this.

    • @eldridge201
      @eldridge201 Місяць тому

@@adammiller8533 not really if you understand what AMSOIL claims as far as their oil change intervals.
Basically, they claim that you can double the oil change interval recommendation by the manufacturers by using their oil. So, if the standard recommended oil change interval is 7,000 miles, then you could essentially do 14,000 miles if you are using Amsoil. However, typically, when it comes to harsher conditions or what most people consider severe Duty conditions where people are Towing trailers with their pickups day in and day out or at least 50% of the time or more or, they're using them for construction work or idling them for long periods of time or what have you, then they typically recommend that you cut the oil change interval in half so instead of doing it at 7,000 me, you would want to do it at 3,500 miles or maybe 4000 miles at the most.
I believe most people consider that if you're going to be doing severe Duty work with your diesel pickup, you should probably change it every 5,000 miles or maybe a little less and that's kind of standard. This is for a pickup and not for a semi truck.
Semi trucks take roughly 15 gallons of oil on average so they hold about 2 1/2 to 3 times the amount of oil that a typical diesel pickup does so, semi-truck can typically go anywhere from 20,000 miles to 25,000 miles or more before you "need" to do an oil change. However, when some people do an oil analysis on their semi truck oil, they will sometimes go 30,000 Mi or maybe even 40,000 miles or more. I have heard of some people saying that they will go 50,000 miles between doing oil changes and they are just fine because they keep up the maintenance on their truck and they don't beat the crap out of it and know how to drive it so that they aren't ruining the oil life as well as other parts like turbos and eo on.
I believe I watched a video a few months back where there is another company claiming that you could probably go either 100,000 miles or maybe 500,000 miles without changing your oil and all you would have to do is change the oil filters every 50,000 miles or a 100,000 miles (I think) in a semi truck. I can't remember which specific video or Channel I watched or what company was promoting this but I think it had something to do with the filtration system and saying that the oil itself doesn't break down as long as you were filtering it properly.
So, they were saying that the oil would not necessarily need to be changed in their particular situation because the oil would not be breaking down as long as there were no other issues going on such as fuel leaking into the oil and contaminating the oil by having bad injectors or maybe a worn-out engine with bad Rings or excessive wear in the cylinders and valves and other things.
Obviously, when you think back to the days of doing an oil change in a typical gas-powered vehicle such as a car or smaller pickup, every 3000 miles seemed to be like the normal recommended interval. So, 10000 miles or 20,000 miles is obviously going to seem like an outrageous amount of miles to go in between oil changes. However, you have to understand that there's a major difference between gasoline powered vehicles and Diesel powered vehicles when it comes to what they need for maintenance and of course, how they are driven. But also, if you are considering a semi truck compared to a pickup, if the semi truck is going to hold anywhere from 2 to 3 times the amount of oil, then you would typically probably extend your oil change ringer bowl to twice or 3 times as long which comes out to be anywhere from roughly 15000 miles to 25000 miles or more depending on the conditions.
And maybe you know this already but roughly 25 years ago, things change with how a lot of the diesel engines were engineered so they require some different maintenance intervals based on how they were designed and engineered such as how the injectors run on oil pressure with Powerstroke engines from Ford or International and I'm sure even Cummins or the Duramax have some interesting intervals as well. But, of course, with time comes better products so there are better oils out there now as well as better filtering and so on. So, things have just improved.

Great video and helpful. I use oil analysis on turbine engines in aviation and have always been a big believer. Modern synthetic oils are so good that testing to determine an interval based on your use just makes sense. I use Mobil 1 Diesel and Archoil additives and find the Ford monitor pretty accurate. On average about 7500 miles for changes. Seems pretty reasonable.

Oil is a very hot topic and you will get a lot of opinions on how often your OCI should be. Testing your oil is very informative and could alert you of a potential component failure. I personally have never tested my oil in anything but I do change my oil very regularly. You don't even want to know how crazy I am about my side by side oils lol. I think the new oils are really good and that's why we can get a little more life out of each oil change. I do the 5K OCI like I've stated before but I have a few friends that wait until the computer tells them lol. One friend has almost 200K on his 2016 and he tows a dump trailer every day. He waits until the computer tells him to change his oil. Some get lucky and some not so much.

I've changed the engine oil on my 2007 Suburban and 2010 Prius every 10,000 miles, and my 2014 Honda Odyssey every 7,500. I had the 3 vehicles for 125k miles and none of them burnt oil or I had any issues.
My last vehicle, 2021 Tundra, is almost 45k miles, and this is the one I change the oil every 5,000 miles. I just seen a lot of Tundra owners experiencing some oil burning, and my oil dipstick goes half way between the dots every 5,000 miles. That means that my Tundra burns about a half quart every 5,000 miles or a quart every 10,000 miles, which according to Toyota is normal. So, I do not know what the proper oil change interval is anyways, I just did not have any issues when changing the oils every 10k or 7.5k.
To make things a bit more interesting, my buddy is a Uber driver. He has a 2013 Sienna. He changes the oil every 15k to 20k miles. His van is 400,000+ miles and he never adds oil during that interval and apparently, his van does not burn oil. So, while statistically that does not mean anything, my experience just tells me that some cars or people, depending on many factors, do experience engine damage from long intervals, and in my case, I have not.

You are a couple of ideas about how to make that engine run better, especially as a diesel, do not try to extend oil changes without a couple of other add-ons first. One of the ways to keep a diesel engine running quite clean is to add water methanol injection. The way to keep the oil lasting as long as possible, out to 10 massively 12,000 me is to put a bypass filtration system on it. Otherwise 5 to 6,000 is a really good oil change interval for your truck. The times that you're going to run it short trips obviously is very low or they would have detected some moisture in it the fear I have is that somebody who does travel short trips is going to hear this and think that they can go 89 or 10,000 miles with their car because they only use it once in a while for short trips. The acid buildup in oils in vehicles that only drive a few miles or less than 10 Mi at a time, is quite High.
I'm not familiar with AR 91 I am with fr2, fr2 is quite an excellent additive. I will look it up and see what it's all about. I've been working on vehicles since about 1964, oil is key to a long-lived engine, trying to go to the Ragged edge of oil changes is a quick way to wear out an engine. Remember, just because you can get away with it, does not make it a good idea

Spending $240 every 5,000 miles on oil gets pricey. If you can do a test once a year and extend it to 8,000 miles or beyond, you are saving a good amount of money.
