    Thank god there's someone who knows what there talking about when it comes to mixing & mastering!! I understand all the plugins now from watching your videos... I got one question.. What's your plugin chain for mixing vocals? I don't know wether to de ess or EQ first... My plugin chain is all over the place

    • @RawTechniqueStudios
      @RawTechniqueStudios  8 років тому +1

      Thanks man. I change it up every now and then but right now I like to DeEsse, EQ, Comp, Enhance. Then if needed do more eq or taming dynamics.

    How do you bring up the signal floor to even out with the rest of the recording. I set my threshold to where I want it, but can't seem to get the quieter parts of my recording evened out with the louder parts without bringing up the overall gain of the whole recording?

    • @RawTechniqueStudios
      @RawTechniqueStudios  8 років тому

      The lower the threshold the more you are compressing the signal. Maybe you need to lower the threshold or automate the volume as well.

    Do you ever use two compressors and if you do why, i always hear engineers use for example the CLA2A and the Rcompressor after. Any reason why? and whats the best way to use both for a good mix.

    • @RawTechniqueStudios
      @RawTechniqueStudios  8 років тому +1

      Sometimes. Depends on the source. If a vocal needs to be compressed heavily I may use 2 compressors instead of one because it seems to work better that way. Also in college one of my professors said it is better to stack compressors instead of over doing it with just 1. But usually just 1 is enough.

    great vid but isn't recording in stereo rather than mono completely different? maybe specify next time :)

    • @RawTechniqueStudios
      @RawTechniqueStudios  7 років тому

      Recording in mono is using one microphone and stereo is using 2. Some people record in mono then export in stereo but the signal is still mono. It looks stereo but it isn't . Rap vocals are 99% of the time recorded with one microphone in mono. The other 1% are experimenting.

    I record in my room and it has little sound proof...my question is,
    Is it threshold set at 40 too much threshold? For my vocals
    Ratio 4.1

    • @RawTechniqueStudios
      @RawTechniqueStudios  7 років тому

      Depends on the level of the vocals going into the compressor. If pulling the threshold down to 40 gets you only a couple db of attenuation then you are good but if your smashing it and getting 8 plus db of attenuation then you might be over doing it.

    I got a quick question. I got really good monitors but I have to nine my tracks down, put then on cd, then take it my truck to see what I need to add or adjust. What do I need to just get a good final mix without the tedious back and forward process?

    • @RawTechniqueStudios
      @RawTechniqueStudios  9 років тому +1

      +Nova Cane Checking your mix on different speakers is a great thing. But to make things a little easier you can compare monitors to headphones right there at your desk.

    if I have a pre mixed beat and I recorded on it vocals do I have to compress the beat again it always happens that the melody in the beat covers the vocals even after compressing vocals

    • @RawTechniqueStudios
      @RawTechniqueStudios  8 років тому

      +MOHAMED AMIN I always compress in the mastering stage. It kind of glues the beat and vocals together.

  • @OmarTorresLife

    OK, so a fast attack means the lower the number right?

  • @Ghaleon15
    @Ghaleon15 8 років тому

    You know when the voice doesnt fit with the beat? The mix of voice+base does not sound natural... I know it could be a lot of things (singing wrong, missing timing, ambience, mic, etc...). Could you give some help just to find the problem ?

    • @RawTechniqueStudios
      @RawTechniqueStudios  8 років тому +1

      It is different every song but EQ can help a vocal fit in a beat more as well as reverb can push the vocal back as well. Some beats leave no room and you have to sit vocals on top so it could be several things.

    Yo man, no matter what I did I couldn't get the quieter words to be consistent with the louder parts. I tried bringing the threshhold down to the level of the quietest word in the verse and it ended up smashing the verse too much. As a result, my song had parts that were louder than others, any suggestions?

    • @RawTechniqueStudios
      @RawTechniqueStudios  8 років тому

      Do volume automation to help the compressor out and to avoid smashing the vocals.

  • @Warmwinterz
    @Warmwinterz 7 років тому

    how did you change the volume in waveform on that peak without using the Gain in audiosuite?

    • @RawTechniqueStudios

      On the clip itself you can adjust the gain if you are in pro tools 10 or above.

  • @vyppahsanchez
    @vyppahsanchez 9 років тому

    what screen recorder do you use?

  • @Warmwinterz
    @Warmwinterz 7 років тому

    sounds like you needed a faster attack time. I can never get away with an attack of 10+ms on vocals

    • @RawTechniqueStudios
      @RawTechniqueStudios  7 років тому +1

      I mix it up a lot and use fast attack more often. But for a more natural vocal that keeps dynamics then a slower attack fits well.

    • @Warmwinterz
      @Warmwinterz 7 років тому +1

      No doubt

  • @ernieg
    @ernieg 7 років тому

    So I noticed that automation did not help the compressor at all , am I trippin ? My compressor still worked as hard with or with out automation. This makes no sense , it should of help the compressor

    • @RawTechniqueStudios
      @RawTechniqueStudios  7 років тому

      Volume automation? If so it is because of the signal flow I believe. The volume slider is post plugins/inserts. To have it help the compressor do less work you would need to edit the region it self. So use the little volume adjustment on the actual track it self.

    one question. why is the vocal track in stereo?

    • @RawTechniqueStudios
      @RawTechniqueStudios  8 років тому

      +LeyendaProductions The artist that sent me the track exported it as stereo instead of mono. So it looks stereo but it is still mono.

    • @LeyendaProductions
      @LeyendaProductions 8 років тому

      +Raw Technique Studios - Hip Hop/Rap Beats/Instrumentals, Mixing, Mastering i was just wondering because I've seen the same thing on other UA-cam videos. and was wondering if they were recorded with to different mics into a stereo track or if it was being done that way for a reason.

    • @RawTechniqueStudios
      @RawTechniqueStudios  8 років тому

      If it were recorded with 2 microphones then a stereo track would make sense. Or if the mono vocal had stereo reverb on it then stereo would also make sense. But when people export audio from mono to stereo it sounds the same but looks different. They should be exported as mono.
