    I have been editing footage from both cameras for years. In this video you share the opinion that there is not much difference between the two, while showing us that a6300 cannot even depict a straight line properly. The a6300 picture looks like the A7iii 1080p footage, in super35 mode, a little worse actually. I believe that a6300 creates its 1080p with line skipping, whereas the a6000 seems to do a sophisticated pixel binning process. a6000 gets hot after prolonged 1080p recording, which make me think some serious processing is done in the camera. a6300 records 1080p easily, but beyond a better processor, i think it's because of the easy on the cpu line skipping, canon dslr style. In my honest opinion, and i am obviously not earning anything to say that, a6000 1080p footage has a cinematic quality. It's not super crisp, but crisp enough and smooth, organic almost. Also, because it has not log profiles but rather a straight forward flat one, it's not so easy to mess the picture up. With the right settings, the picture it creates is my favourite out of all sony alpha cameras, in par with a7sii. Of course, there are some serious problems with a6000. For the love of God, no mic input(!), overheating problems in the summer time, not good battery, iso usable up to 1250(when heavy color grading, in iso over that, i usually come across nasty grain, but it depends on the shot obviously). As a conclusion, from my experience, the a6000 1080p is way better than the one in a6300/a6500, which might produce good results sometimes, but most of the time looks like oversharpened 720p footage, with crazy line skipping artifacts.

      A7 III looks much better in super35 mode than A6300. I was using same lens on both and on a6300 i always get much softer image jn 1080p

      One of the reasons I've kept my A6000 even though I have a lot of Sony gear is the crispiness of the 1080P 60fps video footage. Have you experimented with the A9 and the 1080P 60fps footage? Is it on par with the A600? Also, πάμε μωρή Ελλαδάρα!

    was about to buy a a6500. but since I still use 1080p most time mainly because I shoot 60p. and I am surprised the a6000 can do video tracking pretty good. so I decided to save 1000. and bought a used a6000.

      At this point it's just a gimmick because the amount of bandwidth needed to upload 4K at 60fps not only that most these cameras overheats unless u add a heat sink metal sheet or thermal pad and u have to hack em to record passed 30minutes(ax53 lacks this limit but is way more expensive and lesser sensor) for now 1080p 60fps with xavc s 50mbit is good enough for the next 5 years the standard rn is 1080p anything about above that is marketing bullshit with these cameras at least if u want some serious video quality u gotta get a red camera or something in that league

I have an a6000 and I'm getting into making a music video for myself which is tricky but I'll find ways.. lol.. Thanx for showing the differences/similarity's and also a finished sample of a color graded final product and the quality possible with the a6000.. I appreciate you taking the time to show us this, It's exactly what I needed to know, that my gear is just fine and can produce great results with it.. Once again great job with "Put your head on my shoulders".. However, What lens' did you use?

    Nice!I didn't know you shot that music video,that was great work on the a6000.Did you happen to test 24p?that's where I noticed a slight difference in quality/rendering,but to be honest I would say it's so minimal most probably wouldn't notice.I don't know if the image is less detailed than the a6000 but it does seem to be rendered slightly different,maybe do to the new sensor.Thx for the test.

      @LeeZavitz  8 років тому +2

      I couldn't tell a difference from 24fps it's the same bitrate. I decided to leave it out of this video as it would drop frames since this was exported in 30fps and would look choppy. But yeah in 1080p the a6000 seems to resolve more detail. But it's so minor only zooming in really shows it.

    I found this review to be quite useful as I'm trying to decide whether to sell my existing a6000 and buy an a6300 just to get the 4K video. Sony are asking a lot of money for the a6300, especially considering that the Panasonic G7 offers 100mb/s 4K video for $400.00 less. The only drawback to the G7 is that it doesn't have a LiveView feature that lets you connect a HDMI monitor and see what the camera sees.
    In the meantime, I've updated the firmware in my a6000 to handle XAVC-S and will be experimenting with that to see if it gives me acceptable video without having to shell out just to get 4K capability.

      There isn't much difference in 1080p if any at all. The backside illuminated sensor doesn't make a major noticeable difference really. But where you can see a difference is if you shoot 4k on the a6300 and downscale to 1080p there is a lot less noise. Thanks for watching

      @@LeeZavitz Downscaling 4k to 1080p you lose 50, 60 and 120p, gain a lot of "rolling-shutter", drain the memory card and battery faster, it heats up before, and use more time editing.

    • @LeeZavitz
      @LeeZavitz  7 років тому +1

      jack d if you vlog more than take photos it's best to get something with a flip out screen so you can see what's in focus and what's in frame. A6000, A6300, A6500 are all great photo cams with good af in video but they lack the flipout screen. The g7x Markii or the rx100iv or rx100v are better for vlogging. I wouldn't recommend a dslr like the t5i it's kind of big and has less image quality than the Sony alpha cams. The only thing it does have is the flip out screen.

    Issue is that the A6000 has auto audio level, so you get hissing noise when there is silence. Also rear buttons of the A6000 tend to become unresponsive and a new logic board is needed ($330 USD repair). Also A6300 has better EVF and I was told does not have the rear buttons failure common in the A6000

  • @practicalguy973

    OMD EM10 MKII has the best video in checking many samples on UA-cam. The A6000 has more jerky video in the motion and also some focus and noise in darker parts of the video. Also no touch screen for tap focusing on the A6000.

    Hey Lee. Thanks so much for your videos. I just need some advice. I'm trying to be budget conscious. I have a lot of video equipment but I am looking for a camera that I can put on a crane 2 3-axis gimbal or something somewhere to get some good quality lower light indoor shots. I'm pretty much just doing 1080 video. It's been a couple of years since you reviewed the Sony a6000 and a6300. I was just curious if you think that getting an a6000 is still a good option at this point and if so what lens would you recommend for some good lower light 3-axis gimbal shots indoors?

  • @Lensvoodoo
    @Lensvoodoo 8 років тому

    Thank you, exactly what I was curious about. I wonder whether the difference is internal sharpening algorithm differences? The other thing I am most interested is low light ability in 1080p differences. How much more sensitive is the A6300, is it as much as a stop? I think it is worth noting that if you have a 1080p workflow, on the occasions you need telephoto you kind of have a (no light loss) 2x extender if you shoot that scene in 4k. Maybe low light scenes would be better shot in 4k as I think the scaling would reduce noise?

    • @LeeZavitz
      @LeeZavitz  8 років тому

      +Lensvoodoo Yeah if you shoot in 4k and downscale it there is alot less noise because it gets compressed smaller. So if you are shooting in high iso and dont need 60fps 4k to 1080p downscale is much better

    • @Lensvoodoo
      @Lensvoodoo 8 років тому

      +Zed ProMedia Good. I understand that 1080p (in camera) is also better for noise low light. f you could take the time, do you think you could do a quick test and see how they compare, it would be very informative! As far as low light vs the a6000 how many stops more sensitive would you guess? Thanks for your time and info.

The 1080p is okay, it is a bummer but the 4K is great and the 1080p uncompressed still looks pretty good when I capture directly to ProRes with embedded audio and timecode. The weather sealing is something I only learned about AFTER I bought the camera, I knew about the sturdier body but that is another factor. I baby my cameras but that does not mean they won't get beat to hell. My Canon 550D looks like it's been through more than one warzone.

    What do you guys think about changing my a7sii for a a6500 for gimbal work. For me I am wanting a little faster continiuos autofocus for simple fashion videos, i have read the a6500 is much better. Can anybody give me advice as to whether I should or should not switch over for faster/better continiuos autofocus? I have a 16-35 f4 oss That I usually use in apc mode anyways on the A7sii. Thanks for any opinion's
    I shoot just 60p by the way!! I have read the 1080 on 6300 and 6500 are crappy?

    • @trorvik

      Just in case you are still undecided on this....I have bothe the a6300 (which is almost identical to the a6500) and the a7s ii, and I shoot only 50p myself.. The difference in AF performance is like night and day. You cant trust the a7s ii AF at all. It is horrible slow and hunts all the time. I would say that it is able to nail AF 50% of the time. The a6300 on the other hand you can just put in AF mode and forget about it. It will do a perfect job at AF 98% of the time. I have used it in AF mode shooting television every single day now for almost one year. Both on gimbal, steadicam and handheld. The only time it will fail is in face detect mode when dealing with persons using glasses or have something on their head that makes it hard for the camera to recognise it as a face. It will still AF perfectly on the person. But if another person walks past the camera in the background (even far away) and the camera detects a face on that person it will jump to that person very quickly and then back to the subject in the front as soon as the person in the background is out of the frame. So just be aware of this. Other than that just trust the AF. It is the best I have ever tried and almost perfect.
      By the way.....the AF of the a7s ii is almost identical to the old a7s. It is a tiny tiny bit faster. But we are talking about extremly slow compared to just very very slow. Both are unusable for anything challanging.
      The a7s is however better at producing nice 1080p video out of the box. The a6300 can come across as kind of soft in this mode. That is why I also bought the a7s ii. But since I need a camera with a AF system you can depend on I cant really use the a7s ii for my work. I have no trouble doing manual focus on pro cine lenses, but manual focus on focus by wire lenses is just a nightmare when you have multiple subjects running around so you need to re-focus every 10 second. So I am thinking about selling the a7s ii and wait for the a7 iii or the a7s iii if it gets phase detect AF. But for now a reliable AF is more important than a marginally sharper image.
      By the way...focus peaking on the a6300 is totally useless. Even on its lowest setting it insists that almost everything is in focus even if it is not. The focus peaking on the a7s ii is much better. But with the a6300 AF you will never really need the focus peaking anyway, so for me its a non issue.
      The last few days I have done some real life test comparing the two cameras side by side shooting the same thing. And when I compare the picture quality the difference in real life situations are not as big as most people think. If you just use the factory setting you will see the difference in sharpness between the two if you study the details closely. The a7s ii is a bit better. But if you set the detail level on the a6300 to +3 I really really need to look to spot the difference. And if you just leave the detail level at 0 and instead add 10% sharpness in Adobe Premiere in post I would not be able to tell the difference between the two. Mayby the a6300 is a bit sharper. So I will try to add something like 5% sharpness instead to make them identical.
      In very low light the a7s ii is however naturally much better.
      I am starting to suspect that in 1080 50/60p mode Sony have tuned the sharpness of the a6300 to be softer than it needs to be on purpose just so it will not destroy the market for the a7s series. They have added sharpness to the a7s downasmpling and reduced sharpness on the a6300 downsampling.
      So if I can adjust the sharpness of the a6300 so that I am happy about it I will keep that until Sony are able to produce a camera where you can have both good AF and good 1080 50p video in the same camera.
      By the way moire etc is almost identical on the two in 50p mode. Sometimes the a6300 is worse, sometimes the a7s ii is worse. I would actually say that the a7s ii is worse overall.
      The viewfinder on the a6300 also just looks nicer.
      After having used the a6300 for so long it is just impossible to move back to a7s ii for good. The a6300 is just better in almost every way.

  • @mikesalomon2695
    @mikesalomon2695 7 років тому

    Hi. I cannot understand why 1080p can be different from a camera to another. It is still 1080p so, what does it make the difference?

    • @LeeZavitz
      @LeeZavitz  7 років тому +1

      Salomon Mika You can say the same thing about 4k. Most cell phones record "4k" but it's nothing even close to 4k from RED Cinema camera. There is no real standard when it comes to video quality in any given resolution. Camera manufactures give you a final video that has the dimensions of 1080p or 4k but they are not equal. There are a lot of factors too. Sensor size, dynamic range, lens, processing, down scaling etc. So in the instance of a6300 vs a600 for whatever reason Sony isn't utilizing the sensor in the same way they do with the a6000 I have no idea why. They are both slightly different sensors but the same megapixels. My guess is that the a6300 processes the sensor data differently regardless of them both being 24mp and that's why the image seems slightly less detailed.

    • @mikesalomon2695
      @mikesalomon2695 7 років тому +1

      Ah ok thank you.I have a Nikon D5100 and the quality of the 1080p is really poor. I don't know why. maybe the lens (35 mm f1.8) I want to buy the A6300 I hope the 1080 will be better!!! And I have a Canon 6D for filming it ins't convenient but with the Sigma art 50 mm f1.4 the quality is better. I don't know if the quality of the A6300 will be better than the Canon 6D

    • @Kharon.
      @Kharon. 7 років тому +1

      So from what I've heard is that when it comes to video recording at 4k with the A6300, the A6300 records at 6k in camera and downscales it to 4k.
      If you really look for that crispy clean 1080p, in my opinion you should shoot at 4k and downscale it to 1080p.
      Compare that to a camera that shoots directly in 1080p vs a camera that shoots in 4k and downscales it to 1080p you will get a better quality video.
      Correct me if I'm wrong.

    • @LeeZavitz
      @LeeZavitz  7 років тому +1

      Kharon you would be correct. The only thing about shooting in 4k and downscaling to 1080 is that you can only do 30fps max and there is a lot more rolling shutter. But yes the 1080p image looks much better when you downscale

    • @Kharon.
      @Kharon. 7 років тому

      Zed ProMedia Ah yes the rolling shutter, didn't think of that at all.
      Then it all depends on what we are shooting! Thanks for the input.

      Find a used 5Dmkii its going to be cheaper than a new 70D or 80D and I personally love that camera. I owned one for 4 years. There are other beginner cameras like T6i but I still think its worth your money to get an older used 5Dmkii and learn how to use a pro camera. Those 5D's are built like tanks and you should be able to find one for like $800

      Barely any difference. They both fall apart after 6400 iso. There is suppose to be slightly more detail on the newer sensor but I have yet to really notice it. There is obviously more detail if you shoot 4K and downscale to 1080p but that's really all I've noticed.
