My school has an esports team, we use alienware PCs that don't even have hdmi for the graphics output, and the eports coach says that they're a thousand dollars each
I know I'm a few years late to this but for anyone actually looking to do this, if you're willing to put just a bit more money into this, this is a great way to build a decent pc for not too much. I recently did something similar before just outright building and could run most modern games on medium-high at 60 for a bit under 300. Definitely look into a prebuilt with a better processor than a dual core. There's a good amount of HP Compaq and Dell Optiplex models with mid range i5/7s that'll perform decently. My PC was a small form factor like the Dell in the vid so I got a low profile GTX 1050 ti that fit and ran great . If you have a PC large enough to fit a full size card, just make sure your power supply is strong enough to handle it otherwise that's an additional cost. It also doesn't hurt to upgrade from the stock ram to something larger/faster, 8-16 gb is pretty ideal for lower end. Here's my old build broken down, prices are what I paid on eBay, early 2019. For reference, I could run AAA titles such as Apex, R6, Detroit Become Human, DS3 all on high settings. HP Compaq Elite 8200 SFF w/ i7-2600 - $125 (came with a 2TB HD installed which was nice) Low Profile MSI GTX1050Ti 4GB - $120 Kingston HyperX Fury DDR3 2x8gb 1600MHz - $45
Im thinking of putting a gtx 1050ti into my brothers pc, it has pretty good specs like i5-2400 (quad core), 8gb ram etc etc. Only thing is the power supply is 240w, I’m just worried that it will bottleneck

I'm actually doing something surprisingly similar for a close friend of mine who lost her gaming rig in a house fire. On ebay, check out the full tower Lenovo thinkcentre. I got one for $73, shipping included, that sports an i5-4570, and 8 gigs of ram, but lacking a hard drive. The motherboard has 4 ram slots and 2 pci slots. I'm thinking 8 more gigs of ram, an SSD boot drive, cheapy 1tb hard drive, find a decent used graphics card. Had another friend throw into this stone soup a frankly overpowered Seasonic 850W 80+ Gold fully modular used power supply, so I think this'll turn out to be one heck of a rebuild for my friend. Broke gamers unite, yo.
I. Would stick with 8 gigs of ram, a single 500 GB Inland ssd, and get a 7970 or 280x for gpu. If you go the money left, upgrade that gpu to an RX 470 or 570. The used market for those is glorious.
I got a full pc for a friend of mine with monitor, keyboard and mouse for 200€. He put an RX560 on it and it runs everything really nice. It is an HP Elite 8200 tower
Nowadays, no need for 775 anymore since you can get a 1156 mobo and CPU for the same or lower price, plus the worst 1156 quad core CPU still faster than the X5450/E5450/Q9650. Tested on my own.

i use an optiplex with a q9550 with a LP GT 1030 in 2020, and honestly for the price it's amazing, i even managed crysis 3 at 60+ fps, league is constant 200, and csgo is stable 60
@Shayne Keena an optical drive is something that reads data from CDs or DVDs. It's called optical because unlike USB, which makes direct contact, optical drives work by reading data on a CD or DVD with a laser.
@@Vbnzzdbb no, it really can game. Fortnite all high settings it runs at 120 fps. Yes, it does lack in cpu related games like pubg and minecraft, but most other games it just destroys with a cheap rx 560
classyfenn That doesn't mean much. You could run gta 5 on a single core cpu, in fact I did when I was struggling with a pentium 4 ht, the hyperthread allowed the game to run, like crap. Same with league, you're better off not doing that, if there's something league wants more it's definitely cpu over gpu. The pc in the video played league fine, but the requirements are outdated, the game is old and constantly updated, it's much heavier than idk how many years ago those requirements were posted. And playing a multiplayer game at 15 fps is something you shouldn't do at all. Especially something like league where every mistake is punished the way it is, would be a terrible experience.
I had a similar dell optiplex a few years ago with a gtx 750ti in it haha. Now I saved up enough for a core i5 4460 and rx 570. Solid 150-200fps on csgo and I am cpu limited on that game.
They had this woman sitting in the background of EVERY SHOT playing switch as a form of product placement for dbrand and never acknowledged it. It was so bad that I stopped watching half way through the second episode and went and bought a phone skin from one of their competitors in protest.
Some of those Dell Optiplex systems come in full size towers. They have better power supplies and workable expansion ports. You can add an SSD, max out the RAM, and drop in a GTX 750 Ti or similar for around $200 (US).
Very true, but in the correct channels (at least back in the day) you could definitely get semi-decent graphics cards even for the slim models. I worked IT for a very very tight-fisted company a while back and engineering staff would get basically no perks whatsoever, same Optiplex slim towers as accounting folk, for simplified (and cheaper) logistics, as well as a better bulk lease contract with Dell overall. Juniors would just get some random cheap-ass GeForce card just to make AutoCAD open, while seniors even had a slim pick (heh) of 2 or 3 Quadro low-profile cards for the damn things. The smile on their faces as you showed up to install one was priceless. I can only imagine how much lubing up to their boss they had to do to get the invoice approved... During my 4 years there I got tired of the slug from just 1G of RAM on my PC and just brought another damn 2G module out of my own pocket and asked someone from night shift to just shove it in my machine while bosses weren't around. Have to say they were darn reliable too, as they'd sit on the shop floor on all sorts of dusty and grimy, moist conditions for years with very few problems. It wasn't uncommon to open these up for scheduled checkup/cleanup and find metal shavings everywhere, sitting on connectors, inside the PSU, and they were still fine... I'm guessing a little extra load on these PSUs won't set them on fire, they're probably built like old tanks. Maybe some magic smoke, but no fires.
I just recieved an optiplex 9020 tower with an I5-4590 Intel, 256GB SSD, 4TB WD hard drive, and 32 gigs of memory running Linux Mint 19.1 Cinnamon, and it's fast. The only upgrades I need are a graphics card and a larger power supply. It only has a 250watt from the factory. :(
built something like this for my son ok yeh $220 AUD but stats i5 2400 8gb ram (had 4gb and bought another 4 from cex for $8) gtx 1050 ($70) 120gb ssd ($30) 250gb hdd
Casino Trashcan People tend to be fairly generous when selling their used cards. Only problem is that you might get a grossly dusty card or a heavily used one doomed to die within the next year but hey you can still get one on the cheaps
Pretty much better than my laptop. i5 4300M 8GB RAM Intel Haswell Mobile 180GB SSD - The desktop I'll eventually get to build will probably be more like i7 8700K 16GB RAM GTX 970 2TB HDD (or possibly a SCSI drive)
Until a couple years ago this was exactly the gaming rigs my son and I used. I went to a local community college surplus auction and walked away with 4 machines for $70. Sold 2 on Craigslist for $30 each and used that to upgrade RAM and threw in really low-end video cards. And yeah, that performance was exactly what I remember.
With a little higher budget you could opt for a GTX 750 TI and a core 2 quad Q6600. A 500gb HDD or higher isn't expensive, especially in the used market (only 10 dollars for 500gb). This will up your experience by 1000%
@@MKDC-5 you got point...which processor were you thinking for?...r3 1200?...or 2200g?...the 2. is great alone too. Overclockable, and plays in modern platform...the ram prices are against it :/.
I was actually buying a Q8200 and a 750 non ti for less than 100 bucks mixed from ebay and china (gpu) a few month ago. And no it was not a fake 750. Was enough for a secondary pc for older games. LLT should at least be able to upgrade cpu to a core2quad for less than 10 bucks and in some games that will help more than a better gpu. However if possible go for an i3 2100 oder i5 2400, sometimes you can find them around 50-60 bucks.
FR7 Galaxy It kills fps on more than just low end pc's I have a 3570k at 4.2 ghz and my fps halves with bots, because the game runs it's own server at the same time on the cpu, and the source engine being bad, dota uses the new source and runs better in comparison. My system isn't anything special in the 8 core world of today, but I was averaging close to 80 fps maxed on the bf5 beta.
If people who are less knowledgeable don't know that bots decrease FPS, they're going to think that they won't be able to hit constant 60 or higher. People don't care if bots decrease FPS, they care about how well you will be able to do online / in a friend's match.
I run an optiplex 980 with a first gen I5 and a GT1030. The Gt1030 out performs the 650, is much smaller, doesn't need power plugged into it, and fits the single slot low profile requirement of the case. Only "mod" i had to make was removing a HDD clip so it didnt rub against the fan on the 1030. I primarily use this as a HTPC however bench marking GTA 5 @1080 hovers around 60FPS most of the time. So its a much better gaming experience for a little more money. And its 4k capable which will be fine for me when i get a 4K tv. Granted all my gaming performance will likely go out the window. The optiplex can be found between $50 and $100 on ebay. And i found a gt1030 for $65 on ebay as well. Its a great HTPC option that can game at 1080
@@themuntedbean9847 the Gt1020 doesn't exist... Thats probably why your fps is so low 😂 You could be thermal throttling. I reapplied thermal paste to the processor and Northbridge. If the factory messed up the application on the graphics card that could be messed up too. You could also have bad drivers. Im running windows 10 too.
6:35 I regularly remove and install things in my desktop without unplugging it, I haven't had issues so far. I recommend that you unplug it, but you're not going to kill anything as long as you're careful and don't short something. The most important thing is to make sure the machine is off, I have fried a motherboard by unplugging the laptop display connector while it was on >.>
Prior to watching this, I began work on a similar project. Mine is a free Compaq 6005 Pro SFF. I'm upgrading the CPU to a Phenom II X4, the RAM to 16 Gb, the GPU to a 1650, and a 5Ghz wireless card. I'm only $220 in parts on this thing, having had a few of those parts laying around. As a media center 1080 gaming machine, I think it will be adequate.
I've played WoW on a Celeron 800Mhz laptop, 2GB RAM and onboard Intel graphics and it pretty much got to 20-30FPS in 720p. Some games are genuinely built to run on potatoes and that was the potatoest computer I've used in the past 15 years I think (only thing I had at hand while actual computer sat exploded for a couple of months). Different games I know, but the concept/design is the same I think.
Watching these videos cheer me up. I was given an optiplex but it was a p4ht, I didn't need a SFF space heater. But strangely my main daily driver is a refub T3500 w3690.. quiet and very spacious and a joy to work on. Many older business machines are replaced way before they're obsolete and can be had for a fraction of their original price and upgraded easily.
I love Java Edition but I gotta admit... It has awful optimization, my computer should probably be able to run it at 100 fps no problem, but instead it runs at 40 or so... The Bedrock Edition is WAY better in that regard
@@thefrogmagician9866 I've tried every performance optimization mod under the sun, it does nothing. Optifine, Sodium, all of it, not even an extra frame.
Yeah, up until 2014, Dell did some strange proprietary OEM stuff, including - as Linus pointed out - mounting the motherboard on the other side of the case.
Yep, and even easier if you go with a lower resource Linux Distro like Xubuntu 18.04, and a cheaper low profile AMD R7 240 - 260 card that does not need extra power.
Tezla True if you are going for a system that needs DDR4 RAM thanks to the deliberate price fixed, and shortages from makers sk hynix for example in which the Chinese government is investigating for fraud on those fronts, but if you go with a slightly older system that uses DDR3 RAM, and keep an open on places like eBay you can snag 8GB - 16GB of DDR3 1866Mhz and OC it to 2133Mhz(at least on AMD boards) for decent price. Also using a free, and open source OS like Xubuntu 18.04 64bit can help in lowering the cost in not having to buy a license key for Window 10 from a shady seller, or having to use a hack to activate Windows 10, and risk spyware/malware/Trojans.
Did kind of the same when I built a PC for my GF. I picked up a used HP ProDesk 4th Gen i7. Replaced the a PSU, added an SSD, a second 8GB stick of RAM and a used GTX 970. Runs great and performs awesome for just 300 bucks.
I got this old used hp pavilion from my neighbours for free a couple of years back, and I bought a graphics card for it but I went through the exact same issues of how to power it and fit it in the case without having to disconnect any other hardware or buy a new pcu. Man I had about 4 different types of converter cables in that thing. Had a molex to sata to cable and a sata power to 6 pin and just a lot of other crap just to try and make this arrangment work and the result was a mess of wires akin to some sort of electrical spaghetti. After all that hard work it worked great and the thermals were actually pretty decent too! Well the gpu did eventually die a year later so maybe not as good as I thought... But all things must come to an end. Anyways as you can imagine this was a real throwback to all those stressful but in hindsight pretty fun experiences of trying to make it work.
@@TheNZJesterOh I actually bought one of those. Didn't want to use it at first cause I had an optical drive that I wanted to keep. Eventually I realised I wasn't using it and was probably never going to so I stopped using the sata power and used that instead. That's all behind me anyways, old reliable has been stuffed under the bed frame for about 2 years now and I'm using a laptop as my daily driver. Such is life.
It's great to reuse an old PC like this, especially for people on a very limited budget. One thing you REALLY need to watch out for on those Dells is the power supply. It's not designed to handle a lot of extras and it's proprietary. (one of the reasons I don't care for Dell).
Linus i need you to know that when you're testing CSGO using bots, your framerate is probably going to be lower due to the fact that bots take up a ton of CPU resources lmao

Reminds u that the minimum requirements for league is a single core processor
classyfenn That doesn't mean much.
@@renyn21 LOL is super forgiving in all but the highest levels of play. I'm talking the top 2% it's a very easy game. Very.

Some of those Dell Optiplex systems come in full size towers. They have better power supplies and workable expansion ports. You can add an SSD, max out the RAM, and drop in a GTX 750 Ti or similar for around $200 (US).
Yeh I have a full size 780 tower with a 300w power supply. 750ti coming soon as well as 16gb ram. Then....q9650

PLEASE don't benchmark CSGO with bots. Legit kills FPS on any low-end system.
FR7 Galaxy It kills fps on more than just low end pc's I have a 3570k at 4.2 ghz and my fps halves with bots, because the game runs it's own server at the same time on the cpu, and the source engine being bad, dota uses the new source and runs better in comparison. My system isn't anything special in the 8 core world of today, but I was averaging close to 80 fps maxed on the bf5 beta.
dota2 can run bots using valves' servers, not yours.
Also don't play mm with less than 240fps

These days building a 69 dollar pc isnt very difficult and it can actually be viable in some games.
Yep, and even easier if you go with a lower resource Linux Distro like Xubuntu 18.04, and a cheaper low profile AMD R7 240 - 260 card that does not need extra power.
The high price of ram nowadays makes budget builds much harder :
Tezla True if you are going for a system that needs DDR4 RAM thanks to the deliberate price fixed, and shortages from makers sk hynix for example in which the Chinese government is investigating for fraud on those fronts, but if you go with a slightly older system that uses DDR3 RAM, and keep an open on places like eBay you can snag 8GB - 16GB of DDR3 1866Mhz and OC it to 2133Mhz(at least on AMD boards) for decent price. Also using a free, and open source OS like Xubuntu 18.04 64bit can help in lowering the cost in not having to buy a license key for Window 10 from a shady seller, or having to use a hack to activate Windows 10, and risk spyware/malware/Trojans.
if you're buying a ddr3 system ram prices are fine

They sell a 6 pin GPU power connector that plugs into two Molex connectors instead of a single Sata power connector.
@@TheNZJesterOh I actually bought one of those.
