      Remind me a bit of the german autobahn: you should go 130 at max but you won't be punished if you go faster... unless you cause an accident, then you get a worse sentence than you would if you went under 130.

      That's genuinely how car warranties work. Your car *can* drive at 120mph, but if you run it at 120mph and then run to your dealer, claiming your tires are getting worn out too fast: "get the fuck out" is what you should expect.

      Like, really. A good analogy: this "warranty void" also applies to X570 / Z490 motherboards. You touch a multiplier and a voltage? *Fuck* your motherboard warranty. It's gone. Nobody warranties any overclocking. Nobody.
      Intel also designs K-series CPUs. Does that mean Intel needs to warranty those OC-gone-bad fuckups, too? No. What about AMD's? Unlocked multipliers for everyone = everyone can now void their CPU warranty *together*!

    This, indeed, was a bit of a surprise recently. After enabling AMD's flavor of xmp the system wouldn't even boot in to the 'bios' anymore, that was greeeeat. In the process I learned way more about memory latency then I would have liked. Took some attempts to get it going. Later a bios update became available, with that updated it did run fine at the default 'xmp' profile.
    Looking the qualified vendor list would have prevented this.

      All of those phone warranties with custom ROMs have to be able to be reversed. They never supported custom ROMs, they just wouldn't void your warranty as long as you reflashed their firmware before sending back your device. The problem lies in if your phone bricks with a custom rom then you're pretty much screwed.

    Original title: You Should NOT Overclock Your RAM?

  • @atomicskull6405
    @atomicskull6405 Рік тому

    3:15 My brother used to work as a testing engineer at Intel, his job was to test chips under extreme conditions and see how they degraded over time in order to create the specs they should actually be run at. He says they can tell if the CPU has been abused like that. They aren't putting them in a PC and just seeting if they post they have multi million dollar diagnostics machines where they stick the CPU in it shows the signals coming out if it (think an oscilloscope combined with a logic analyzer), they can even test it if it's non functional in a PC. It shows the waveforms of the TTL signals coming out of the chip and according to him they will show degradation (become less square and more distorted) over time if the chip is run outside temperature or voltage specs. And they can pretty much tell what was done to it based on what signals are distorted and in what way. They may or may not go to the bother of actually doing that but if they really want to they can tell.

      As a Freshman Electronics engineer the Transient patterns can tell about wear and abuse very easily. BUT CPU manufacturers actually probably get so many RMA's from faulty hardware and from OEM test analysis queued up that I think they don't bother to deeply analyse every CPU to see if any clock boost was done

    They probably void the warranty because overclocking the RAM is actually overclocking the CPU, because the memory controller is physically on the CPU and XMP or DOCP draws more voltage through that controller.
    I've had 1 Ryzen 3200G burn out from this. It was fine for a Ryzen 1200, two ryzen 5 2600, and a ryzen 7 1700.

  • @tresnugget

    In most cases I believe enabling xmp shouldn't void your warranty, however there are those insane kits that do like 4600 MHz and motherboards will throw insane voltages to the vccsa and vccio like 1.5v.

  • @DarkNia64
    @DarkNia64 4 роки тому +2

    Imagine putting up with months or even years of random BSoDs and general instability, only to find out the problem was being caused by XMP, since your board isn't good enough to run the RAM at it's rated speed.

    In Brazil happened that if you send an email to intel warranty they will deny if you use XMP and say to you send again an email lying to them about XMP and then they will be able to do the warranty and all ads they do it's about overclock cpu and memory to sell this but if you do, you can't receive warranty. wait what?

    It's like if lambo said their cars can go over 200 mph but most speed limits are way below. If someone were to ignore the speed limit and crash than it would be hard to get Lamborghini to pay the damages just because they advertised their cars could go that fast. It does make some sense. The cpu sets the speed limit and the just because the ram can go faster doesn't mean it should. So it's kinda like checking to make sure your motherboard can use a cpu, make sure your cpu can handle the max speed of the ram

    A few adventures after that... I swore off overclocking. Maybe on an old PC for fun. But if I NEED to for my daily driver/gamer... then it's time to save for anew parts.

  • @iburisback

    I don't think it is worth the risk. XMP doesn't make much difference in most games, and it generally means higher temps and less stability. So what's the point of it? What really boosts RAM performance is dual channel or quad channel mode. That's enough.
    I recently made a GPU upgrade and wanted to max out my PC. I had XMP enabled, but my system was not stable. Perhaps something was wrong with my MOBO - DIMMA2 and DIMMA3 died by themselves weeks later... What a mystery.
