Now, I remember the original E1M1 theme from Doom quite exactly, I heard it many times. I listened to various MIDI renders and they just lacked the sound quality of a good electric guitar. I listened to several covers, but generally the guitarists lacked the skill for the fast transitions and they played it very differently. I listened to several covers by very skillful guitarists, but they deviated to follow their own artistic license.
You are the first one I found to stay true to the original track. The 2013 recording was pretty close and this one, sir, this is exactly what I was looking for, when I thought my hopes for ever finding it were doomed. This is the original masterpiece, played masterfully. Thank you!
I bet the OST would sound a lot like that, if not for disk space restrictions imposed by the drives of that time. After all, a HDD of that time was often as small as 50 MB, and games were sold on 3.5" diskettes that had whooping 1.44 MB. This track in M4A format has 1.58 MB, it wouldn't even fit a diskette. The magicians of that time had to use MIDI format and use whatever magic they had available to make it sound like metal. They did a damn good job at that, there wouldn't be covers otherwise. But of course, a cover done well sounds better than that.
v1asec thanks so much for the kind words and I’m glad you liked both my videos!!! Limitations were certainly the reason for midi. They were super creative back then with sound effects and there’s a certain charm to midi that gets lost a bit with real instruments.

I just started playing Doom 2016 and stumbled across your video. You're are so awesome. I'm just starting out playing the guitare and would love to learn M1E1. Is there anyway you can provide the tabs and a note if you are palm muting any of the notes? I have read in some other video they are palm muting. But I can't tell if you are or not. Thanks for any information you can provide.
@Lorcan Ward. Sorry, I was able to download the tabs from your link above. So I if I read that right, PM is only done on the open E. So are you lifting your palm on all the other notes? If so I can't even see you doing that. I absolutely lover your version. Truly inspirational.
Hi Mark! Thanks for checking out my video, glad you like it! Yep you just palm mute the low E, and then when it changes string you palm mute the low A string, and then near the end you palm mute the lower notes in the riff. Guitar is all about making the smallest movements, if you look closely my hand lifts slightly when I am not palm muting. This is a difficult song because of the speed and how it's down picked but keep at it. you can also play the main riff on just the low E string:
