Mr. Holton I'm ever so glad I found your channel. When I'm feeling down watching your work puts a smile on my face. Thank you and may God bless and keep you safe in this new year
Thanks so much Troy, it makes everything worth while to hear you say this, stay safe my friend and have a wonderful 2024. I'll always be here if you need me. Mike
I've seen this video on the UA-cam page for a few days now, and thought I'd give it a watch tonight, Friday, March 8, 2024. A giant eye, eh? If I was to be having something from this bowl, I'd have the feeling that I was being watched. LOL! This bowl would be great by the front door at Halloween to frighten all the little 'ghosts 'n goblins' that are out looking for a treat.
Had an idea for a version of this bowl with a lid. Basically it'd be a clear lid with a heart(s) or star(s) in it so that when the lid is on the bowl it looks like a heart/starry/etc. eye. 💖💖
Looks really good. Well done. I loved the still closeup at the end to show the colours and patterns in the iris better. Adding the blue later was the magic. The hole for the worm screw was deeper than I expected. Not a problem in this case, but consider using a glue block with a paper joint if you need to avoid a hole when turning the bottom of the project. I use such a mounting method often. Just a piece of paper with CA glue on both sides makes a strong joint. The block and the project need to be flat but this is normally not a problem. When the bottom is turned, a knock with a mallet or a chisel under the edge of the block with shear the paper. Other options for the colouring are : Shellac with a drop of alcohol based dye. The tiny bottles of dye are not cheap but they last a LONG time since you need only a drop. Gilders paste. Available in many colours. Shoe polish. Back in the day this would be in every household, brown and black. May not be so popular these days. Fiebings make a wide variety of dyes. Sold as leather dyes, but work with wood as well as leather. Dave.
Hi Dave, thanks again for the very helpful comments. I knew I would be ok with the worm screw on this build otherwise I would have used a glue block, never used the paper method although I do know of it. I'll give it a go next time the opportunity arises. I have never come across the idea of dye in shellac which makes a lot of sense, some Indian inks have shellac already in them. Gilders paste is another good idea I had not considered, I can get no end of colours in that. I have tried shoe polish before but the small puts me off. As always thank you for taking the times to make your observations they are always helpful and very welcome. Mike
I was wondering how you would show the pupil if it was hollowed out but wow, it's just amazing. Really enjoy this piece. And of course, being green (my favorite colour) makes it even more to my liking, lol 😊 10 days is a while but appreciative of the time you put into it. So worth the result. Thanks, Mike, for sharing 🙂
Alles Gute, Mike
Love those eyeball effects.. Kinda hallucinating 👁️🌀
Thanks Wendy, not made one of these for ages, I may do another soon. 😀

I love the way that you made this inlaid bowl. The black of the back and the pupil almost look like obsidian.
Thanks William, this is one of my favourites without a doubt :)
Mike, that’s a very cool and unique looking bowl! The colors turned out really nice.👍
Thanks, this is still one of my favourites 😀
Very eye catching bowl, love the colouring on this

What fun projects. Most guys have these huge lathes and this inspires me on future projects of my own
Thanks Joseph, you can do a lot with a small lathe, so glad it has inspired you :), must admit though I would love a larger lathe 😃
So funky, I Love it!
Excellent work Mike! Love what you did with the colour of the eye! Well done sir!

Halloween salsa bowl?
That's a good call Robert 😀
The leading edge of the color of the eye the center edge. The blue gos in rays paler than the blue. Just a thought.
Haha I will try harder next time 😀
