  • In this easy woodturning project I work with Milliput and aluminium to give a unique resin edge not a resin inlay to my project which in this case is a sycamore wood bowl.
This woodturning channel, explores the uses of wood when combined with resin, epoxy, to make woodturning projects, that are easy and can be classed as art. A lot of the wood turning projects I make can be completed by the beginner through to the more experienced wood turner. If you have any ideas for artwork, wood inlays, epoxy projects or any other wood turning projects please get in touch. Collaborations are always welcomes.
Thanks for watching and feel free to leave comments in the chat below.

That rim turned out so attractive, I like how the aluminium showed up as squiggles in the dark Milliput. I see what you mean about the sycamore looking slightly dirty. From what I can see on the screen, it also is fairly plain, not much character of its own. I haven't seen a thumbnail indicating if you have done more of this type of rim, I hope you do revisit it!

The bowl looks really good. Just before the still pictures when you were showing the bowl, I could see the grain on the inside looking "dirty" as you mentioned. I love using sycamore. Happy to report my pieces have so far had nice clean grain.
I have worked with a lot of aluminium on the metal lathe. The metal may be soft, but the swarf can be sharp and a lot harder than my skin. LOL I have had more than my share of slivers of metal including aluminium, needing to be removed with tweezers or sharp pointed objects.
    Well done.
    Dave.

That looks really great! I have seen this done once before but the bowl was larger and the rim popped off as the wood moved. Jim Overton, I'm sure you follow him but he used to do loads with Milliput, suggests using 5 min epoxy as an additional bonder. I think making a deeper key slot.might also work on larger pieces. Either way, great work!

@@MikeHolton Actually Mike, I'm going to correct myself as I just found the video I was thinking of. Channel is Twisted Crafts UK, video title - Woodturning - A Maple and Milliput Epoxy Bowl. The channel is dormant but what he tried to do was have Milliput inlay visible from both side but still have a wooden rim, it was the wooden rim that distorted and popped off and the finished article was more like your bowl. Sorry for the confusion, Best, Dave

Beautiful work, i'm getting into wood turning and i have few questions:
    - is there a risk that one of the metal shaving would splinter during the turning? that would hurt..
    - that bowl feels quite thick to me. is it because if it was thinner it would break, or for esthetic reasons?
    Thanks a lot :)

Hello again! What is CA glue? I am new & don't know any terminology or products used in wood turning. Is wood turning all one word? Anyway, hope you don't mind me asking, you never learn anything if you don't. I am nearly 65 and am thinking of taking it up. Cheerio for now. Janet.

CA glue is also called SUPER GLUE / CYANOACRYLATE glue. It can be sprayed with an activator to set quickly. In the trade we use woodturning as one word but no-one would ever worry about it being used as two. Please feel free to ask any questions you like however at the moment I'm out the country on holiday so response time will be slower 😃 all the best, Mike
