- A CA finish may be a well known process for creating an easy, quick and durable finish on parts that can be spun on a lathe or drill press. My buddy David Bedrosian shared his process with me...and this is my first experience doing it and the pieces came out smooth, protected & beautiful! Easy to apply, dries relatively quickly and looks like its gonna be a fantastic finish!
David shares a wealth of woodworking information through his magazine articles and through his Instagram account: / bedrosianwoodworks
StarBond Adhesives sent me this glue...I certainly appreciate that! Here's a link to their website: starbond.com/
I'm always sharing loads of tips n tricks on my Instagram account: / ramonartful

After 42 years of woodworking, I'm just learning about this. Amazing finish.
It was fun! Anyway Much thanks!
I typically wet sand the finish, working up to 12000 mesh micro mesh.
Wow…that’s a high grit! I bet that looks amazing! Here, the knobs are for my workbench. They’ll get banged up 😆
Fabulous work Ramon. Thanks for sharing the CA process and showing the amazing finish. Those knobs look perfect!!
David…thanks to you for the process! It worked just as you prescribed!
Ramon, I am so happy I found your channel! I enjoy your positive attitude and I’m sure I will learn a lot from you because of the energy you bring to your work.❤
I’m glad too! Thanks a ton…and welcome!
WOW what a beautiful project. Thank you for your video.
I am soooo glad to have made that upgrade…it works so well! Thanks a lot, I appreciate it 🙏🏼
What a great finish. Always great content
Thank you thank you 😊
Awesome...always learn something! Thank you!
I always love hearing that. Much thanks.
Thanks for sharing your time you did a great job.
The knobs are still shiny but they’ve been knocked a bit! Super glue finish turns white on impact. To be expected…could probably refinish easily though. Thank you for watching!
Still learning . Remembering is the hard part. I saved it this time so I can watch it again tomorrow before I head out to the shop. Thanks
We’re all learning! I think it’s an amazing time in history currently. We can all find any info we want at the click of a button! Thank you tons
Awesome Thanks for sharing. Love your content.
Glad you like! Thanks for watching
Great video, nice to see someone telling it like it is. Great first attempt, far better than my attempts today! I'm going back in the workshop and have another go at this tomorrow. Thanks Ramon.
It’s a fun/easy way to add a finish for some projects! Thanks for watching 🙏🏼
Nice! I love your videos!
Thank you!
I’ve done this process several times and works great. Great video Ramon hope all is well with you.
Thanks Tim!
I didn’t know about this technique but now I’m not surprised it works, the CA glue is very tough! Great demonstration Ramon, thank you for sharing it😀 The three knobs on the vice wheel look fantastic! 👏👍😀
Thanks! I was aware of pen makers using CA but I had only used it on a couple of knobs years ago. It worked well and after reaching out to my buddy David Bedrosian (Instagram) about the process, he gave me a few pointers. And I gotta tell you, I looooove the new knobs on the hand wheel…works so much better than a single knob!
Nice tip, thanks!!
Thank you!
Sure is a nice finish. I've heard of this before. Thanks for sharing
Yeah…it looks great! Thanks for watching!
Great video
Thanks for watching!
What No rude comments?? ?This is youtube the trolls can't help themselves. Looks great. I started using this about 8 or 10 years ago. I like to turn wood pipes.
Ha ha…ok, ok. Just a few rude comments are expected. Yeah…the CA finish is kinda cool…quick n easy. Thanks for checking out the video 🙏🏼
Good video.
Great to hear. Thanks!
I have only recently started playing with CA glue and activator for woodworking. What a game changer. It doesn't do everything, but wow, is it handy and fun. I bought the thin and gell, but the gell is way too thick for what I planed. Time to experiment with it.
I'll have to try this finish method on some of my chisel handles I need to make replacments for. Cheers for the video.
Thanks for checking it out. I use mostly thin and medium. I recently did a repair on a huge “mis-take” that I made! Had to use an entire bottle of thin. But it worked and worked well. I’ll turn it into a YT video soon. Thanks
@@ramonartful wow, a whole bottle. That could get a bit expensive. :)
They look great Ramon. I have used that finish on ink pens but it’s been so long I had forgot about it.
I tried it years ago and it looked okay but not like this turned out. I’m glad I had seen this process on Davids IG page….we’re all learning! Thanks
@@ramonartful We never stop learning! It's crazy how you can build hundreds of pieces and it still seems like each thing you build you learn something new.
Great video! I thought I’d add my technique. I use a CA finish on all my pens and bottle stoppers. I start with 4 coats of thin CA. Then I add 5-6 coats of medium flex CA. Afterward, I use micro mesh pads. Then polish with McGuires.
Sounds like an effective process! I had no idea what I was doing 😆 but I followed a friends technique (David Bedrosian). The knobs still look great. Anyway, Much thanks.
I'm glad you mentioned good ventilation when doing this. The fumes are not good for you.
You’re right…it can be quite strong! Thanks for watching
I used CA glue on some spalted apple just to stabilize it, and it worked out so well that I kept applying more coats as a finish.
Awesome! Thanks for checking out the video.
Nice one! I was shown in the past this technique, the only difference was that the activator was sprayed on the paper towel and spread in the piece instead of sprayed directly . Don't know if it make a big difference but should avoid bubbles maybe👍 I will definitely give a try
That’s interesting…I will try your method of applying the activator next time. Thanks a ton for watching
Nice video! Sanding on the lathe can work really well if you use long, narrow strips of sand paper, about 3/4" wide x 12" long, and hold one end in each hand while the paper is wrapped around the part. You can easily move it up and down the part, and can slide it so more fresh paper sands and dust won't build up as fast. But it also keeps your hands further away from the spinning lathe, so if the paper grabs, you can just let go of the strip of paper without your hands getting pulled in. I have hurt myself before sanding on a lathe, and this strip method is far safer and you get faster results. Also, try adding a splash of water to the part before you sand with 600 grit or above, it will really help too. It rinses away the grit as it sands.
Good points and idea. Thanks a ton!
Cool, never seen that before!
I came along from Blacktail studio.
Thanks! Stick around, I have lots more! 😬
@@ramonartful oh I will!, regards from Scotland, David.
Great M8
Thanks for watching!
I want to know how you made the steady rest,,. Regards Alf
I do pen turning and use this finish exclusively. I think you will be very happy with the durability of the CA finish.
Thanks a ton for checking it out and the input! It sure looks and feels amazing! I won’t go easy on the testing! My bench gets used daily. I’m looking forward to seeing how well it holds up!
sweet
Thanks!
Awesome finish. I always thought about doing that. Good to see it actually gives a good finish. I am curious about the durability of it and how resistant it is to the oils and acids of the human skin that get in contact with this finishing method.
Well, so far so good! I have both vises with thee handles that get used every day. Time Will tell. Much thanks.
Good one hermano. Now I wanna see a video bout that lathe jig. Also, is that a metal working lathe?
I have a video coming out April 3rd about the “steady rest”. And yes, it’s a metal lathe 😬
Whenever I do much sanding with the lathe on I end up with more radial scratches than there were to begin with so I tend to sand turned pieces by hand now
That’s interesting. It does make sense since they’re technically cross grain scratches.
I had some small scratches, but not bad enough to bother me. Had I used magnification, I most likely would have caught the missed progression of grits. Anyway, thanks a ton.
I just came across your channel and this video - that's amazing! I'm wondering how well the finish has held up. Has any of it chipped off? Have any spots worn down? If it wears (as opposed to chipping off), it should be easy to refresh by applying more coats, right?
Great questions. The finish has held up well…no chipping. However, the knobs have a few white spots (dents) from being smacked with a board or whatever. But it’s just a workbench and I expected that. It probably could be touched up as you mentioned. Thanks a ton for watching!
First time I've seen that process raymond it came out nice. You bought these kit where at??
The super glue kit I got from Starbond Adhesives. It works well for a finish....I'm loving the new location of the knobs on my workbench. Works much better than a single knob. Much thanks!
I heard about this a few weeks ago on a knife making forum as a coating for a knife handle. I've been doing some trial and error testing on the handle but I can't get it perfect. I'm not using an accelerator which is most likely the problem. Instead I'm applying thin coats and waiting for it to dry. I guess I'm buying some accelerator tonight 😄
I think the accelerator does help a lot. One thing that I didn’t do that will also make a big difference is buffing out the finish once it’s cured. My project was utilitarian and I didn’t need a perfect finish. But using green and white compounds will take out any imperfections. Have fun!
@@ramonartful Thanks for the tip. Maybe that's my problem. I've been lightly sanding with 400grit every 10-15 coats and reapplying but was getting a dull finish. I'm hitting this sucker with the buffing wheel after my next coat. I've also been testing a different method by quickly and very lightly wiping the finish with a rag dampened with acetone. I got some great results but not consistently. One way or another I'll make this work.
@@testticklehead I think half the fun is learning what works...often after figuring out what doesn't! You'll get it 👍
I did this a few years ago on a slingshot it held up pretty well. If you apply it and it's uneven, could you sand it and then polish it?
I think so, but not sure. Seems like you could sand areas needed to remove excess, lightly scuff all areas, reapply a coat or two, then polish.
huh.. who da thunk it! Never heard of that before.
It was quick, easy and fun. 🙏🏼
Just be careful not to put enough on that it’ll sling the glue up toward your face. Ca glue+eyelids=lessthanagoodday
Dang man…that is such good advise! Thanks
I've done this many many times. Never use an activator. Don't need it.
Good to know. But what’s the harm in using activator? Thanks.
@@ramonartful I'm not sure without testing. I worked at Lee Valley and we never used it. Cyanoacrylate is enough. Why add the expense?
@@Mr_Rick gotcha...that makes sense. thanks
All that glitters is not gold.
This is a negative and rude comment!
I don’t remember the video exactly…I’m assuming that I said “I don’t need negative or rude comments“? 😬
