  • These commercials aired on NBC in the Summer of 1977
    1. Promo for "The Gong Show" (Commercials starting here are from 6/25/77)
    2. NBC Saturday Morning Bumper
    3. "Monster Squad" Intro (No relation to the 1987 movie)
    4. TV Spot for "Herbie Goes To Monte Carlo" (Gary Owens announcing here. He actually had a small role in "The Love Bug" as a race announcer)
    5. "Monster Squad" Commercial Bumper
    6. Micronauts
    7. Frosted Rice Cereal (With free Glass Stick-Ons)
    8. Save Energy PSA (Asking baby boomers not to be selfish and wasteful...good luck with that kid)
    9. "Monster Squad" Commercial Bumper
    10. Count Chocula and Frankenberry (With free Monster Pop Chute)
    11. Girls Clubs Of America PSA (This features characters from the largely forgotten cartoon "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kids", which is essentially every Hanna-Barbera cartoon put into a blender: • Theme Song | Butch Cas... )
    12. Life Savers (Commercials starting here are from 7/16/77)
    13. U.S. Department of Agriculture PSA
    14. "Speed Buggy" Commercial Bumper
    15. Snickers
    16. Frosted Flakes
    17. Funny Face (Kool-Aid knock-off?)
    18. Nestle Quik
    19. Kellogg's Corny Snaps
    20. Nutrition PSA (With Cookie Monster)
    21. Bubble Yum (I'd like to report a puppet assault...)
    22. Lucky Charms
    23. Mr. Wizard Close-Up (I miss the old quarter design with the eagle on the back. Every time I come across one it's like seeing an old friend)
    24. Promo for "Speed Buggy"
    25. "Speed Buggy" End Credits
    26. McDonald's Go Bananas Shake (That "Happy Cup" is pretty neat)

I had looked for years for that Ad Council energy PSA as I was around 10 or so when it first aired and thought how cool it was for that kid to be up in the Statue Of Liberty's torch. Happy that I stumbled across it here.

I loved monster squad as a kid! I can remember, going to see Herbie goes to Montcarlo and the whole audience laughing alot. It was a great time! Saturday mornings, breakfast cereal, cartoons and daydreams... How I love remembering!!

As a '70s kid, I can remember most of these. I don't recall "Monster Squad" (never seen it), that Girl's Club of America PSA and that Mr. Wizard Close-up ( *maybe* I do recall). But what I do remember: "The Gong Show", The way the NBC logo was at the time, "Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo" (I actually saw that in the theater!), Micronauts (there were [and are] even Micronauts comic books), Frosted Rice with Tony Jr., That save energy PSA, That Count Chocula and Franken Berry commercial, That Life Savers jingle that sounded like "Bo Diddley", That Snickers commercial, That commercial at 4:52 with a horse named Fred (I didn't noticed that name when I saw the commercial. But *this time* it reminds me of that Sesame Street segment where Grover was an old western hero and his wonder horse was *Fred* !), Speed Buggy, when Frosted Flakes was called *Sugar* Frosted Flakes (as well as many other cereals with the word *Sugar* on the name), That Funny Face commercial at 6:27 (that Professor didn't say "Son of a ..." uhmm never mind), That Nestle Quick commercial, and *maybe* that McDonnald's commercial.
That's all for a lot of *that* !

I commented on this in a previous volume, but I just can't get over NBC without the iconic peacock! Mercifully, they resurrected it a couple years later (and modified it in the 1980's into the version we know and love today).

"This features characters from the largely forgotten cartoon "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kids", which is essentially every Hanna-Barbera cartoon put into a blender: " -- These descriptions always crack me up. And about that statement: How about Speed Buggy? It was basically Scooby Doo, with a talking car instead of a talking dog. Then there was Funky Phantom (with a ghost instead of a dog). Ah, good times...

9:59--Wow; I remember watching "Speed Buggy" on Saturday mornings, but I'm pretty sure it was several years later than this. I think one of the networks reran it for a season or two in the early 1980's.

I love Monster Squad! I have the entire series on DVD. :) When the Love Boat first started, I'd say "Hey, it's Walt from Monster Squad!" when Fred Grandy would appear. :D Now, whenever I talk about Monster Squad, all anyone remembers is the 80s movie, not the 70s TV show. So, I have to set them straight. :)

If I could meet Fred Grandy, I'd love to talk with him about his many accomplishments, but I would truly love to know if people still ask him about Monster Squad.

Re. the Frosted Flakes commercial @5:58: that location was (and I imagine probably still is) used for TV show and commercials "camping" scenes. It's Franklin Reservoir, which is in the hills kind of between Beverly Hills and Studio City. It always looks like it's in the middle of nowhere but five minutes from there you're at Coldwater Canyon and Ventura. The Brady Bunch's camping episode was filmed there as was the 70s Annette Funicello Skippy commercial. I believe the Andy Griffith opening sequence was shot there as well.

Funny Face was actually as popular as Kool Aid back then. The cups they had were super collectible. All the kids I knew had them.

How dare they discontinue Frosted Rice! I want some now! Also the commercial with the kid being like, "I wonder what it's going to be like when us kids grown up?"
Me in 2022: Oh sweet child of the 70s... It's bad.

4:21 Life Savers and 5:28 Snickers--2 great candy commercials with catchy jingles! The Life Savers one seems to be based on the song "I Want Candy", which is originally by the Strangeloves but does have a Bo Diddley-esque feel to it.
4:52-- Back then I thought that tune was called "Do Your Ears Hang Low"! I'd never heard of "Turkey in the Straw" when I was a kid.
6:57--Ah, the iconic Nestle Quik (now called Nesquik) rabbit, and one of his many unsuccessful attempts to drink Quik slowly.
7:27--Hmmm...I don't seem to remember those Corny Snaps.
8:28--Although Wrigley's is my gum of choice nowadays, back then I loved Bubble Yum and similar brands.
8:58--I must admit that I never cared for Lucky Charms, but I liked their commercials back in the day.

Funny Face was basically what you said: a Kool-Aid knockoff. It was originally made by Pillsbury, and was introduced in the early '60s with flavors like Goofy Grape, Injun Orange (later Jolly Olly Orange), Loudmouth Lime, Chinese Cherry and Rootin' Tootin' Raspberry. They weren't bad though. They had to change some of their character names because of backlash from different ethnic groups, and it may have adversely affected their sales.

A strange coincidence to see a bulldozer in the Cookie Monster PSA when I saw an art piece of a bulldozer in the background as Cookie Monster was on an old TV set. The theme was for an environmental art show.
