That deep bass rumbling is a tuba. Grew up listening to my brother practicing one.

I love country music that tells a story. This should be our national anthem.

Check out Sing me Back Home. In my opinion that is Merle's very best song.

I believe that is either a trombone or a synth to sound akin to a tuba.

Modern country is not country. A lot of folks would disagree with me - but they’re wrong. Like fine whiskey, the older stuff is much better.

In old country songs often one instrument would kinda do the ad libs, or something similar, and that's what that "out of place" sound was if I'm not mistaken -- a steel guitar note or a slide guitar note. A steel guitar FYI was played flat and was built into a little stand and the player could control an air flow inside. That's where the steel guitar gets it's unique sound from.

I tried explaining the difference between modern country and classic country to my son, but if you aren’t familiar with both, kids of today can’t understand.

From the UK so I didn't fully understand the context of the lyrics, too much. But from what I did I wasn't that keen. I think the good times are now and always have been, if you want them to be. By the way I'm 72 years old but obviously an optimist.
