In old country songs often one instrument would kinda do the ad libs, or something similar, and that's what that "out of place" sound was if I'm not mistaken -- a steel guitar note or a slide guitar note. A steel guitar FYI was played flat and was built into a little stand and the player could control an air flow inside. That's where the steel guitar gets it's unique sound from.
I tried explaining the difference between modern country and classic country to my son, but if you aren’t familiar with both, kids of today can’t understand.
From the UK so I didn't fully understand the context of the lyrics, too much. But from what I did I wasn't that keen. I think the good times are now and always have been, if you want them to be. By the way I'm 72 years old but obviously an optimist.
