Branded man is another really moving song about the life of a convict who is now back out in the real world and really trying to do things right and discovering how difficult that can be.
Ace, this song was in the background of my growing up and then it moved into prominence when I was in my twenties once I was into tons of different kinds of music. It meant so much to my old family and relatives. And to this day just now even, I got some tears in my eyes listening to it because I know what it's about I've seen the equivalent in real life and I know how good Merle Haggard is. I know you know that I followed you for a long time. But I'm telling you this is one of the ones that hits you in the gut strings.
This version sounds like it was sped up a little. There are other versions that are slightly slower. In the slower versions his voice is slightly deeper and has more feeling to it.
Merle Haggard was one of the REAL Country Music artists.

My favorite Merle song. Peace, Love!! I hope I can find someone to "sing me back home" before I die.
Read the story about Merle Haggard and why he wrote this song. He was an ex-con who turned 21 in Folsom Prison.
Inspired when Johnny Cash came there for a concert
Merle was in San Quentin not Folsom
Got to see Merle a couple times
The live version where he slows down the composition and adds a simple guitar solo, is the best version of this song.

The Way I Am is incredible.
Gov . Ronald Reagan granted him and full unconditional pardon in 1972, twelve years after he had been released from San Quentin.
I think Merle wrote this from his own experience. Check out Merle Hggard and Willie Nelson "It's All Gone to Pot".
This song makes me cry. ❤❤❤❤❤
Poet of the working man
They calledHag the poet of the common man
Merle was older in this version
❤️🧡💛💚💙💜❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
I would love to hear more Merle ! Try his song Misery & Gin

Please, please, react to one of his hit songs in 1968. The title is " The Fugitive ."
Isn't it "I'm a Lonesome Fugitive'? Thank you, but I've not heard of one just called "The Fugitive"!
Play Chris LeDoux's music. Some is funny, some is heroic, some very romantic!
Don Williams version is great too
rumor has it johnny cash influenced merle
They also did a great version of this song on the Johnny Cash Show.
If I’m not mistaken, Merle was an inmate at Folsom when Johnny made famous album there!
Lovely song, but this isn't the best version. The live version @ Anaheim Stadium (accompanied by Willie Nelson) is hard to beat.
Live version is more deep.
