  • Cities Skylines Beginners Guide - The Better Way to Plan Ahead | Ep 4
    In Todays Episode, we continue the Cities: Skylines Beginners Guide by going over how to expand your city while planning for the future. We begin by building a cargo terminal, so our trucks no longer have to drive in and out of our city to import or export. They still will on occasion, but this should help our traffic tremendously. I then move on to the tram vs. bus debate and discuss why I prefer trams over buses as we build a hub and speak transient network to complement our metro stations. Lastly, we build out a primarily residential area with all the services and a few critical design choices that really bring the room together.

    18:25 that is really RL issue of Tram vs Bus and the biggest con of Trams (that almost doesn't exist in games, making Trams superior in CS). Upfront cost, inflexibility and time needed to set up. In Warsaw they are building a new long tram line in N-S direction - it will take years. You need to find a lot of space (sometimes through Eminent Domain which in itself will take a lot of time, not even mentioning cost) throughout the city and once you pop it in - it will most likely be there for almost forever. Covering this with a bus line would take a month or two of plopping some bus stops (assuming existing ones do not exist) and putting some buses on the line. With all the drawbacks of the buses - the ease of creation, modification of lines is a huge, huge pro. Sure it adds to congestion and pollution, sure it is much less effective than a tram line - but at least it can be there, instead having citizens being excluded from public transport for long.
    PS: Speaking of freeing up land - that is one thing that I must say I like in Transport Fever 2 and miss in Cities Skylines - TF2 makes Eminent Domain much much more costly and in turn - makes you think about stuff like freeing land to put in rail/tram/wider roads. I hope CS2 will have a cost for doing Eminent Domain.

    I'm really loving the series. Being from Denver, the #1 US City for buses, I love the theology you're going with with your transit.
    I didn't get a chance to comment last episode, but you don't have to "Y" into turns with tram lines, like you do with trains. It'll make your tram line in the middle of the city look a lot cleaner if you just "T" into it. Just a suggestion.

    If I can offer a suggestion: turning the road connecting the farm to the cargo rail into one of those small highway roads might encourage trucks to stay out of the suburbs due to the faster speed they can travel at. Or use the Heavy Traffic Ban policy to keep the trucks out of the suburbs.

    As a Phoenix resident I have to disagree with your tram comment. To be clear, I love the light rail. However, with the exception of Tempe, I don't think it is set up well. Mostly because it was unfortunately set up by lawmakers here to fail. It only has one single giant line that isn't every efficient. I'm very excited and hopeful about the new extensions though. I think with these extensions and more strategic extensions, it has a lot of potential!

    The water cleaner floaty thing, works really well (if you want to clean it faster, throw 5 or so in, and then you can remove them when cleaned).
    The unsafe appearance of walkway tunnels comment:
    if you think that is unsafe, imagine being on a ped bridge when the train engines roll under - technicaly if you are worried about something that is not in the game, you might as well make something more realistic than looking like a water flume overpass where you get "coal rolled" by a train engine lol.

    17:38 if you could really call Phoenix's one light rail line and a streetcar a network, and by American standards, it's not that old. The light rail will become a network in 2024, as the South Central extension will force the line to be split into two. Is it just that the trams themselves look nice? Also, another advantage of trams over buses you didn't mention is the guarantee of service. It might be mostly psychological, but people are more inclined to think that a tram will come and stop to get them than a bus is. It's also harder to cut service entirely due to the fixed infrastructure. In terms of enticing development, trams are definitely better than buses.
    When it comes to my thoughts on the debate, I think that both have their use cases, and should compliment each other (e.g. buses feeding into trams).

    • @CityZilla
      @CityZilla  Рік тому +1

    It's not surprising that Las Vegas does not have a Tram system. While there are more that 2 million people in Clark County, Las Vegas has less than 650,000 people, spread out over 135 square miles and a low tax rate so I'm not sure how the initial investment would be funded. The Tram would have to cover a very large area that has a low population density so I would imagine it would be underutilized.
