Hey everyone!! I hope you guys enjoyed this video as President Snow is honestly one of the most interesting characters from this franchise imo and I loved exploring his story!! There will be another poll on my community posts for the next video so go vote and lmk what you want to watch next (and to my American viewers, wishing you all the best in the coming days, please be safe, and vote!!). See you soon❤️❤️
Why did you take away your previous video? Realy liked that video. I will say anyway realy liked this video gave me some great insight into Snow I dident think about.
You know I think Snow miscalculated again with Katniss. The smartest thing to do with her, rather than throw her into the arena again would have been to make her a Capitol citizen. Give her and Peeta a small house in the Capitol, heck maybe even bring Prim since the Capitol loves her so much, and keep them in house arrest basically except for when he wants to show them off. The rebels couldn’t have made her a symbol then because he could convince the districts she was what all of them wanted. They all just want to be district. Make them jealous of her. And eventually when the districts have stopped caring and the capitol has lost interest and gotten bored… then arrange an accident. Oh no, there was a house fire! Isn’t that tragic, the odds are never in their favour are they? Poor them. The girl on fire, died of smoke inhalation. No more problem. I mean, would t have been as good a story but seems like something he should have considered. I think it would have worked.
You should’ve been his minister of interior instead of Egeria hahaha. He definitely could’ve done that and snipped the problem in the bud, but I think it has a lot to do with Plutarch Heavensbee being in his ear while actually being part of the rebellion. Otherwise I think this would’ve worked amazingly for sure
But would Snow really have allowed someone from the District, especially 12!, to live in the Capitol? To be the same type of citizen as himself? And once you cross that line, you can't uncross it. Then you open the door to having more and more Victors becoming Capitolites, and I don't think Snow would've abided that. Katniss didn't become the symbol because she went into the arena for a second time, she became a symbol as soon as she broke the rules in the first arena.
@@insanelytomato I don’t think so. Katniss and Peeta set a precedent as the only time two victors were allowed to live. Snow could have them “elected” in as capitol citizens. We know if they’re well off enough district people CAN buy their way into the capitol from soujanis and the plinths. There is already a precedent for it. They could say instead of paying two victors wages they’re going to save money by making room for them in the Capitol and they can get jobs. I think it would work.
i had this thought! in fact, id say the best way to do it would be to fake ancestry records and say that one of her relatives was a capitol citizen. you were one of us all along! you always should have been here! thats not just saying shes not from the districts anymore, thats saying that she never was.
Something tells me that if President Snow, Anakin Skywalker, Billy Loomis from Scream and several other villains weren't played by handsome actors, they wouldn't have so much sympathy from the public 🤔 (This is probably obvious lol)
I think the biggest challenge when adapting the book into a movie was the lack of Snow's inner monologue. So much of Snow's true character is revealed in his thoughts. This missing component allows many actions and scenes to be misinterpreted as kindness or sincerity when in actuality Snow's choices are selfish and calculated. Without his inner monologue, we as an audience are unaware of his deep resentment for Sejanus, his intense possessiveness towards Lucy Gray, and his overwhelming lack of empathy for anyone. Coriolanus Snow is a textbook narcissist. Every choice he makes is for his own personal gain, even the choices that seem like kindness. Not only does Coriolanus desperately want success, he believes he deserves it by birthright. He can excuse any choice he makes, nothing is truly his fault, and he is superior to those around him. Snow & Lucy Gray The pair are an interesting dichotomy. They bond over their similar circumstances in their struggles as orphaned children. As well, they both were forced to "perform" to survive. Lucy Gray literally sang with the Covey; however, Coriolanus acted as though his family was not poor in order to maintain social status and potentially regain their wealth. For Lucy Gray, refusal to sing would lead to starvation. Yet for Coriolanus the inability to keep up pretenses would lead to a major fall in social status resulting in a future of extreme poverty and shame. A fate Coriolanus would consider equal to or worse than death. They develop a kinship because of this understanding of each other. They also understand that in this relationship they both have something to gain if the other does well. Lucy Gray needs Coriolanus to be successful just as much as Coriolanus needs Lucy Gray to win. Lucy Gray and Coriolanus exist as arguments of Nature vs Nurture. These characters though do not give us a clear answer as to which argument is correct and instead suggests a mixture of both. During the games themselves, we can see how the Lucy Gray and Coriolanus are both forced into positions in which they must make choices to decide their futures. Lucy Gray is a kind person who is forced to make selfish decisions to live. (Killing other tributes.) Coriolanus is a selfish person who is forced to make selfless decisions to succeed. (Helping Sejanus and Lucy Gray.) Because of the games, Coriolanus has to intercede for Lucy Gray. He has to take risks and break rules to help her live. Since she is his only shot at wealth and power, he has to care about her as much as he cares about himself. Later, he is stationed in District 12 and has the possibility to return to his Capitol life and we see how quickly he decides to rid himself of Lucy Gray now that she has become an obstacle rather than an asset. Coriolanus Snow is a man who had multiple opportunities to become a kind person and potentially end the hunger games before they truly began but instead he CHOOSES power and success. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is NOT a story explaining the backstory of a tragic villain. It is the rise of an eager and willing villain.
I adore this comment/analysis. Very well thought and I personally did not even begin to think about the other major similarities between LG and Snow until I read this. I do however think that, though he uses LG as a means to gain power and wealth, he did also love her in his own twisted way (at least in the movie I think he did, it is a bit harder to argue in the book). About him being able to stop the Games: I think that's what truly pissed me off the most about him. I obviously knew he wouldn't because we have Katniss and the future Hunger Games, but to see that if he did not give his ideas to Gaul, the Capitol would've lost interest and President Ravinstill probably would've made them stop the Games and thus spared many lives. I am sure they would've found another way to 'punish' the districts but that particular thing genuinely stuck with me. I also loved Highbottom's character because you can clearly see that he regrets his drunken mistake and feels responsible for all the lives being lost to the Hunger Games. He also reminds me so so much of Haymitch for some reason (the regrets, the drowning your sorrows in alcohol/dr*gs, the caring for the tributes such as giving LG money after the Games). It is an overall amazing movie and an even better book!
As someone that has only watched the movie i may have to admit i probably misread the movie and Snow as a character entirely. I left the movie thinking i had watched a spectacular corruption arc. That Snow had started the movie a decent if not great person and left it a horrible one all while doing semi understandable decisions (given his situation) at least up until the end of the movie where he tries to kill Lucy to complete his transformation
i chose to read the book before watching the movie. one minute in i absolutely agree with you that the movie wasn’t able to capture how AWFUL it was to read songbirds and snakes. we can pretend he’s reliable but he’s not. you can read one chapter with horrible implications, hope it doesn’t work, but it does.
@ definitely the hardest book to read a while. an absolute mastery of manipulation and a constant reminder that not all “protagonists” are good people:
I did it the other way around and watch the movie first. And I was genuinely appalled by how horrible he was in the books omgg😭 I had to put the book down a few times just to ask myself if ppl really do think like this. The book was great and he definitely is not reliable. Even though it is 3rd person POV, we only see things through him. He lowkey manipulated everyone including the readers
@@rama2.0.1 Sorry to be butting into this conversation, but one thing that I thought was very interesting in the book: one of Snow's character flaws is that he doesn't get art. I can't recall a lot of the specific scenes, just a few examples (but it's woven throughout the story): There's a scene in the book when he asks how the Ballad of Lucy Gray ended and Lucy Gray basically tells him, it's for the listener to decide. This is so at odds with the way in which he thinks that in his internal monologue, he immediately asserts that poetry is stupid anyway. When he listens to Lucy Gray's songs, he constantly treats the lyrics as puzzles for him to solve (while being seemingly unable to appreaciate the poetry). He has to have explained to him that the covey all have a colour word in their name and this clearly surprises him! The only song he knows is the national anthem. This is an interesting supplement to his overall characterization. To understand art, to appreciate art for what it is, you have to be able to empathize - to be able to understand what an artist may have felt, what others feel, what you feel and why. You have to be able to admire another person, recognize and appreciate their skill and talent and unique viewpoint. You have to have at least somewhat of a pluralistic worldview; have to accept and celebrate all the people who are fundamentally different from you, and make an effort to understand them. Out of these abilities, Snow - who is self-centred, close-minded, uncreative and, of course, profoundly authoritarian - lacks all. Because evil can't create, only destroy. Evil can never make great art. It's also a nice contrast to both Lucy Gray and Tigris who are of course both artists.
@ you honestly just revealed to me a whole new perspective on his character. I did find it odd that he didn’t notice the Covey’s names but never thought too much of it. This is going to my favourite comments folder lmaoo:)) also do u study art or something related to it because that was a really cool thing to notice?!
you know, if we all work together i think we can still fix him. jokes aside this is a brilliant video and it portrays perfectly the selfishness and lack of empathy, that movie-only fans miss out on. showing the parallels between the hunger games and the ballad of songbirds and snakes gave me the shivers because i never even thought that far. very very good video, already recommended it to my thg loving friends!
Team work makes the dream work right?? tysm for giving my video a chance, I am super super grateful for it! I do hope that most ppl who watched the movies also were able to read/listen to the (audio)book because they are honestly so different imo which was surprising to me because the previous movies followed the books almost to a t. This doesn't make it bad tho imo, but it is definitely interesting seeing all the differences. I hope your friends will enjoy the video as well!! ❤️❤️
@@rama2.0.1 i know right, but for me, he deserves that kind of death where the people starts to gather around him as if he can't breath anymore. It's kinda mysterious and makes you wonder where tigris could be? Perhaps she must be sad about that happening but doesn't show up. Interesting Detail: in the prequel, he is known as "Coryo" while later on in the story, He is simply known as "Snow" Even Katniss just calls him President Snow, there were no implications in the book about her being aware of his full name or otherwise.
Yeah I think collins did amazing with his death. A lot of villains tend to have an ending that is not ‘satisfying’ (idk if that’s the appropriate term here), I’m thinking of Cersei in GoT for example. But for Snow it makes sense. His life is taken away by those from whom he took away so much (their food, their lives, their children). As for Tigris, if I remember correctly, Katniss did tell her that she’s going to kill Snow in Mockingjay and she seemed somewhat pleased by that. I don’t know if I’m confusing this interaction with hers and Joana’s tho. For his name, I’m sure they know of him as President Coriolanus Snow but only call him President Snow out of respect. Coryo was what his cousin and his family called him as a nickname/term of endearment uk? But you might also be right since nowhere did Collins tell us the readers or viewers his full name throughout the main series. It only appears in The Ballad.
Tigeris tried to suppress their father's influence on him, but the father in his head won. I didn't think about the scent of his mom dissipating, though. That was an interesting addition!
Yes I think even though he says otherwise Snow always wanted to have the power his dad has which meant more to him than the goodness Tigris tried to teach him. Yesss the whole time I was reading the book I saw how important it was for him to keep his mom’s scent bc it makes him feel comfort and close to her. In the books he literally throws away the compact’s paste after it gets wet in the rain after hunting Lucy Gray. He just leaves any trace of empathy behind in district 12.
While Snow appears to want to co-opt Katniss at the start of Catching Fire, Katniss quickly becomes aware, through her reading of the crowds assembled throughout the Victory Tour, that there was never anything she or Peeta could ever have done that would quell the discontent in the Districts. Moreover, as Snow, through the Peacekeepers must have known this before he visited the Everdeen family in District 12, his sole purpose was to intimidate and attempt to control Katniss, probably because, to his disgust, she was a Capitol favourite (witness how the, clearly prominent Capitol citizens, demonstrated their "Mockingjay" love through Jewellery and tattoos at the Victory Ball). For Snow, he needed to find a way to kill Katniss that Capitol citizens would accept, because while he felt only contempt for the Districts, he knew that others in the Capitol wanted his job...
Ah, that's why one of the biggest causes for his downfall was giving Katniss another stage to present herself on. Making people empathise with her more
I never really thought that far but you're absolutely right. Him killing her would not bode well for him either bc of her reputation/love she gets after her games. Truly loved ur perspective!!
On that note, the fact that everyone, including his own granddaughter, were mimicking Katniss because of their love for her probably made him hate her even more. In his need to find an acceptable way to kill her off (in a way that wouldn't make her a martyr, or course) he would end up listening to Plutarch who came with all the "right" ideas. but obviously that way of killing her didn't work out, lol.
@@faymelp826 yeah I think genuinely think that if it wasn’t for Plutarch, Snow would’ve killed her right after the first Games in some way or another. And you’re so right about the granddaughter!! Did you see the lethal side eye he gave her after she told him everybody at school wears their hair like Katniss lmaoo?? He was fuming
Great video! And I very much agree with your points. Especially when you essentialy describe the Snow of the books as pretty far gone but still salvagable. He cleary is no Voldemort, he has the capacity to feel and form actual human connections, but he chooses not to for power and control and satisfying his ego. He constantly makes self-interested and manipulative choices but rationalizes them away as necessary and rational. I think Snow's arc is basically the reverse hero's journey. He isn't someone fundamentally decent tempted by evil, he is someone very wicked tempted by good and love for the very last times in his life.
Thank you for watching!! Yes Snow is such a compelling character bc he is surrounded by so much opportunities to do good and be good (even in the cruel Capitol) but he leaves it all behind for status and power. I think we need more movies like this I loved to see it no matter how infuriating of a character he can be!
coriolanus snow is one of my all time favourite characters in all of fiction. you did a PHENOMENAL job explaining why - yes he’s a villain, and yes he’s evil, but he’s oh so incredibly human.
thank God someone who’s not like “oh young snow is hot I can fix him” I hate that mindset I appreciate you seeing things for how it’s supposed to be lol
To be fair Tom Blythe makes it hard lmaoo. But for me it truly has to do with all the things he's done later on during his presidency that made me go into this book/movie with my mind set on not liking him. I still can see that he could've had a redemption as a teen/young adult but afterwards he is truly just lost in his own madness.
@@rama2.0.1 then there's me who, as a hormonal teen when the movies came out, was already like 'man donald sutherland is so hot... i wonder...' lmfao thank god this prequel didn't come out until my politics were no longer ruled by my horniness
I think it’s awesome that we get this contrast of Book vs Movie Snow. I think it’s a true look inside what a real manipulator is-in the book, we get his true thoughts, and in the movie, we see how he appeared to others. And Movie Snow could convince you of his goodness-but Book Snow shows you what he actually harbors inside.
You mentioned Volumnia and Snow's _inability_ to care for other human beings, and I feel like it's important to understand that this was exactly that - an inability, or, rather, a mental disability that prevents some people from feeling empathy. A person can be born with it or develop it after some heavy trauma, especially in early childhood (in Coriolanus' case it could be either or both). People with anti-social disorder exist and it's not their fault that they are this way (the book does a great job of portraying this condition from the inside, as far as I can tell). The thing is, they are not bound to become murderers or tyrants; they are extremely good at adapting to the behavior patterns of the people around them, so in a society where kindness and caring for others are the norm, and the cost of a life is high, such a person would just be... a person. Coriolanus wasn't inherently "evil", the "darkness" in him was just a pile of trauma and a mental disorder. To "fix him" you'd have to fix the society. It would force him to adapt and conform to the new rule set, because that's what he does.
Great video, you deserve more appreciation. It really shows how horrible Snow is for Lucy Gray, seeing her like a show dog instead of a person. (Also, everyone trying to fix him is gonna look like a construction crew lol)
Thank you so much❤️❤️ Yes bc in the movie you see him almost switch at the the very end when it comes to LG but the books show you that he’s always been very possessive of her in a sickening way and saw her as a means to an end for sure. I’ve been telling my best friend exactly this lmaooo!! Everyone wants to fix him, it should be teamwork atp hahaha
Side eying my 'I can fix him' shirt rn-- I think snow is my favourite villain, full stop. Collins so expertly toes the line between redemption and spiralling madness and resentment in tbosas, and despite knowing who he becomes, I ultimately rooted for Snow. The world is so expertly crafted and it was actually somewhat horrifying seeing the similarities between myself and Coryo. It shows how easy it is to become a victim to, let's be real, gr00mers, and how easy it is to culivate a culture of fear in young people. I like the fact that all of his primary influence are women, and that such a bitter, self hating man was pushed to extreme ideals by rejecting the matriachy of tigris and lucy gray, and instead embracing gauls messy radicalism. Excellent video, you had such well articulted points and it was such an enjoyable watch, thank you! (and what are the odds you posted this literally the day I decided to reread tbosas)
We might have the same shirt ngl.. More seriously, I absolutely agree with you. Collins is an excellent writer and she did a great job with all her characters and especially Snow. He is evil, but that was nurtured in him which is so sad to see because, basing myself off of the movie only, he seems like he could've been a good person but unfortunately let his ambitions for power push that aside. I found it hard to empathize with him because I am in so deep when it comes to THG universe and knowing all the things he did not only to Tigris but also Finnick made it near impossible to see him as a good person, but as I stated in the video, until the scarf scene, I did think he was redeemable. Thank you so much for watching the video and sharing your thoughts. These comments literally make my day, I love reading them!!❤️❤️
@@rama2.0.1 imo Snow is ruled by fear, not ambition. He craves power because he thinks it's the only way to keep himself safe, to truly escape poverty and peril. Power of course has other effects (controlling people, getting all the possessions you want, etc), but I think the fundamental attraction is the promise of safety and stability.
@@emilyrln Ooh that's such an interesting perspective and I can definitely see that! There are a lot of choices he makes throughout the book that are fueled primarily by fear and maybe secondarily by ambition. Like when he sends the jabberjay with Sejanus' plan recorded on it, he is mainly afraid of Sejanus dragging him into more trouble and only later thinks that maybe it could score him a few points with Dr. Gaul. I really like that too, because its unique imo to have a villain driven primarily by fear.
I appreciated that about the book. I would find myself slipping, forgetting, and rooting for him, but then he would say something sideways and remind me who the hell he is. "Ohhhh yeahhhh.... gahd dammit"
Omggg same here!! Every time he would be nice I would like oww okay he can be good. And then I remember that this is the same man who killed Haymitch’s family and gf, tortured Peeta, trafficked Finnick, etc. and then I’m like oh yeah maybe not lmaoo
Reading the trilogy and then ballad of songbirds and snakes highlighted the self-importance and cruelty of Snow for me, the way he rationalised every horrible, selfish decision he made in endless attempts to maintain an image of virtue while possessing practically none. The ending especially, as he moved in with Plinths, lived on as their heir, and used their money to build a life he imagined worth a Snow after betraying and killing their son and years of secretly despising them. I adore how Susanne Collins showed what the Snows were actually worth with their choices, and what the so-called district scum was, in contrast, too. Snow is complex, human, and even understandable, and because of that he is terrifying.
i will admit that when i was reading the book (i actually finished it yesterday lol) for a while i sort of overlooked coriolanus’ possessiveness over lucy gray, attributing it to lovesick jealousy towards her past with billy taupe which some can say these feelings are normal. but eventually i recognised that his “love” for lucy gray was twisted, and this line from the book ‘it had been better to have her locked up in the capitol, where he always had a general idea of what she was doing’ cemented him as a walking red flag. to him, it was always about control. he wanted control over what others thought of him, shown by his calculated actions that gave him a capacity to manipulate others. he wanted control over sejanus which resulted in them sharing a very undefined and rather one-sided friendship, and control over lucy gray in seeing her as an object belonging to him and also wanting to credit her win to his. also this is such a brilliant video essay! what was the process like for you in constructing this? do you need to have a certain schooling speciality when it comes to analysing film or books? i always wanted to present unique ideas like yours but i fear that i’ll repeat a lot of points many others have stated. but videos like these still inspire me to want to make video essays in the future too :’)
For me, I clocked his possessiveness over Lucy Gray rather quickly bc 1. I hate his guts so I started reading the book with an already negative view of him (which has its cons ngl) and 2. I was talking to another creator on here about the book before reading it and they warned me about this so it was easier to see for sure bc of these things. I’m so happy you think so😭 I usually take a while when it comes to my notes. So when I’m reading the book or watching the movie I tend to pause a lot to put my little post its and write down my notes. For sure some of my ideas will be similar to other ppl since we’re all watching the same movie/reading the same book but I tell myself that it doesn’t matter and that everyone has their own experiences which somewhat helps differentiate their view with that of others. I definitely got a few comments stating how my video/some of my points are redundant but I do not pay it too much attention as long as I like the work I put into and I know deep down that those are my own thoughts/ideas. I do not have any specific academic background for this! I think the only thing that might be a little bit attached to my studies is the fact that I do mention some politics here and there (which sometimes backfires lmaoo) and the essay writing style is basically the same as when I write my school papers which makes the script a little easier for me to write and organize. I am however struggling to write the script for my next video bc I simply decided to watch the movie and not read the book which leaves me with a huge lack of details so my one advice would be that if there is a book for the subject you want write about, do read it no matter how long it may take you. It’ll give you the extra understanding that may differentiate your work from that of others! I completely encourage anyone who wants to make these types of videos to do it. UA-cam is not always easy and I was just super lucky when it comes to the algorithm but what really matters the most to me is that you can see the concrete result of your work in your video which always makes me happy. And it’s so so rewarding seeing people interact with it (whether they agree or not). So please just make that channel/video essay I’m certain you won’t regret it and lmk if you ever need help❤️❤️
Brilliantly made video. The points were very well-supported and convincingly detailed. I haven’t read the book so wasn’t aware of some details but have found Snow to be a fascinating character in the movie.
Your last video was great, but this one is once again even better. I just saw this video and immediately thought that is something I wanna watch. And then I realized it is from you! Amazing. Now what I love about Snow is how he himself has some natural goodness in him as well. However, we can see him fail again and again to resist power and it's corrupting nature. And even though he might have had good intentions at first, ultimately, when put under pressure, he makes bad decisions. Yet afterwards, he can always convince himself he made the right choice. The necessary choice. One that in his eyes, others would not be strong or smart enough to make.
You are too sweet thank you so much for the kind words, truly! I'm glad the algorithm brought you back lmao:)) Yes Lucy Gray was right when she said we all have good in us, even Coriolanus. It is so interesting to me that even though the two people he seemed to be closest to (Tigris and Lucy Gray) were also the ones from whom he learned the least, at least when it comes to empathy. And I agree with you, he is always trying to rationalize his choices, even if we as the reader/viewer can clearly see them as wrong he twists it so much that in the end, to him, he is right even if he is not good. He is an amazing character through and through.
@@rama2.0.1 Rational, systematic evil is one of the most dangerous indeed. And I am glad to be here, looking forward to your next project! Also, what happened to your previous video? It seems it is no longer available
@@IMU23588 it really is!! Unfortunately UA-cam won’t monetize my channel bc of that video (I have a longer explanation in my community posts if you want to check it out!!) so I privated it for now to resolve this issue but I might have to completely delete it if I want to be monetized 😞
12:21 the major reason he couldn’t kill Her and her family right after the berries is because people of the Capitol adored prim and Katniss sisterhood so unlike all the other “problem victors” who see family’s were purged. In Catching fire Joanna says it perfectly “ if Snow killed her sisters the Capitol would riot”
First video I've seen from this channel and I see great things in your future. I love break down videos on characters with more facets than most movie will give sight to, so thank you for this, retrospective videos like this are necessary to see the full picture.
your comment truly makes me so so happy❤️ I am super grateful and happy that you enjoyed the video. And yes I mostly watch video essays/movie commentaries on here too and I love when they focus on one character it always brings out details I did not take note of before!
Ah I'm glad to hear that you liked the editing it took me forever😭😭 but I'm so happy bc it seems it was worth it!! And thank you so much for the compliment haha❤️❤️
Yay! You're back! I've been patiently awaiting your next video and it didn't disappoint. To be honest I hesitated to click this video because I have been in the camp of "I can fix him cuz he's hot." but once I noticed it was you I snapped clicked and don't regret it at all. Your analysis is deep and showcases aspects I didn't pick up. It really made me rethink his character. The ending of The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes felt like a tragedy for me, I wanted a HEA even tho I knew that wasn't possible based on future movies, but I think that's what makes this movie so incredible. Looking forward to whatever future videos you put out. You're well spoken and your scripts are insightful I can't help but be enamoured watching them. (Also the audio improvement is solid.)
I'm glad you clicked omgg!! I think there are many ppl in the "I can fix him" club and I can't blame you guys... I mean did you see the buzzcut?? I personally found it hard to like him because of his future actions in the franchise and bc of how he is depicted in the books but I totally understand how someone can want a happy ever after for them (up until the end of the games and the lake scene at least). It's unfortunate that he made the choices he made, but as you said, that's what makes the movie great and the character interesting. Once again thank you so so much for your kind words, I am truly not joking when I tell you it warms my heart (I have in my fave comments folder hahaha!!). Also thank you for letting me know for the audio, I was wondering if it was okay! I know there are some parts that are still a bit off but I'm glad it sounds better!! I hope to see u in the next one❤️❤️❤️
The trauma and sadness I see in Coriolanus, is the same I see in my brother. The actor looks very similar to my brother, the same shaved head when my brother joined the military. Watching his story in this movie, killed me with almost every expression Coriolanus made.
I rewatched all of the hunger games movies and plan on rewatching this one, absolutely loved it! Snow is such a complex character to me, truly one of my favorite villains 😊
Yes Francis Lawrence did amazing with these movies for sure:)) You’re so right! Snow is an amazing character thanks to Collins writing. I love to hate that man lmaoo😭
Great analysis! I cannot stop thinking how all these control tactics are exactly what happens in real life. How the dehumanization of a group is justified in order to maintain control and power. How calling rebels radicals is somewhat the same that we see these days, calling resistance terrorism. It might have something to do with the Hunger Games coming to be through Suzanne Collins zapping TV and seeing images from the Iraq war where people were fighting for their lives and reality television shows where young people were competing for money.
Yes absolutely! In my last video (now privated:(( ) I mentioned how Collin’s is really well versed in politics. Like her dad was a professor of political science and a Vietnam War veteran so you definitely can see all her knowledge and experiences shine through in her franchise
TBOSAS was so so so hard to listen to. I went into it hoping Snow changed after the book. I bawled for Sejanus. I bawled for Lucy Grey. I didn’t feel that way for Prim. This book felt personal
@ I think the “ending” of Lucy Gray was partly because of Snow’s guilt for Sejanus. If he hadn’t had that breakdown, I feel it could’ve ended differently.
@@Midnightmorgan99 yeah I think it fs had something to do with it. I also read online (some forums and whatnot) that perhaps the snake was not poisonous but may have given him hallucinations/made him more paranoid hence his overreaction and anxiety which led him to shoot her.
30 minutes video about bosas and Snow???? I love thiss!!! ❤ I think one thing to add to his elitism and obsession with appearance is that it goes back to the first paragraph of the book. That he as the heir of the Snow family has only his (social) wits to live on. He has to appear perfect to his surroundings and believe that him being capitol makes him inherently better than people from the district - specifically the Plinths - because that's all he feels him and his family have left. Which is why the "Snow lands on top" thing is so important to him - it means that in any desperate situation he's in, he's still worth something and he's destined for greater things. But the two beliefs disprove each other (if he were truly superior, he wouldn't have to pretend). It's just a coping mechanism that keeps him together. And he never fully believes it because if he did he wouldn't be so anxious and insecure about anything he can't control. It meshes so well with the fact that he's actually similar to Sejanus and Lucy Gray. All three are people who don't fit into the strict capitol-district binary of the system. It's why I think he didn't fully hate Sejanus (at least when he was alive). He relates to him in a way he refuses to acknowledge. Sejanus and Lucy Gray realize it's the system at fault and reject it, while Coriolanus desperately tries to fit back into it leading to the bad outcome of the book. I think it's all a very interesting story about how exactly authoritarian and hierarchical systems destroy you as a person if you let it!
6:04 This makes me wonder how Tigris developed her empathy & sense of right & wrong, especially given how she had to be the breadwinner for the family from a very young age - doing ANY job imaginable (including selling herself) to put just enough on the table for them to survive. You could argue having to scrounge so low with no dignity left after loving in luxury like her cousin would breed in her the same resentment Coriolanus developed after losing their family’s fortune but she turned out as the opposite. Then again after suffering similar pain to someone else such as starvation, you typically think it’d be easier to empathise with another, but that was never really the case with Coriolanus, it was always part of his act to ultimately serve himself. Though it may come more naturally to some than others & manifest in different ways, kindness & empathy are learnt traits - we’re not born knowing them.
Yeah I was wondering too. I think Tigris is very similar to Katniss in this regard. She is the oldest (not sibling but very similar) and has to take care of her family in anyway she can from a young age. Even though Snow suffered a lot of trauma, I think Tigris being older was able to remember much of it more and was able to shield him at least a little bit. I wish we knew more about her parents too bc maybe her parents are also very different from how Snow’s dad was. Their characters really bring forth the whole nature vs nurture aspect of things imo.
the only “ my girl “ i accept is from the movie flipped when bruce said “ my julie . She’s laughing what was she laughing about ? How can she stand there and laugh and look this beautiful “ and i stand by it . Coriolanus “ my lucy grey “ comes from a place of possession not of a place of love like bryce’s
10:08 she represents The Dark Mother- Kali Ma the destroyer creator- the doctor’s race is pivotal to add a deeper psychological sociopolitical gendered dimension that plays beautifully into the psychic construction of Snow ( read: White ( and look at what the preservation of the truly entails),Whiteness as an imperialist colonial, white euro modern project- this is what it takes 👆🏽. We see the Hunger Games now- in Palestine 🇵🇸, in Lebanon 🇱🇧, in Haiti 🇭🇹, in Sudan 🇸🇩 in Congo 🇨🇩, how we treat the invisibilized people- create a narrative and double down on the Empire’s lies. You are not allowed to recognize another’s humanity in this system.
This is such a good video. Snow is such a fascinating character and I like how Collins managed to put a lot of nuance in a character you’d still hate but understand better how he turned out this way. It would be awesome if you covered Coin and Plutarch because they are just as fascinating character studies. The only other piece of media that comes close to the vibe the Hunger Games provided was the movie adaptation of V for Vendetta. It really shows the power of idea and how fragile these structures actually are once the idea - or even the critique of one - manifests into a community effort.
Thank you for watching and I’m so happy you enjoyed it❤️❤️ Snow is definitely one of the most interesting dystopian villains I’ve read of. He is very aware of how fragile his regime is as he admits to Katniss. All it took was hope and compassion to bring it down (along with great coordination ofc) I would love to cover Plutarch especially but it is a bit difficult since I do not necessarily have as much information as I did for Snow. But I am definitely planning on doing one on Haymitch when his book and movie come out next year!! As for V for Vendetta I’ve never seen it but I’ll definitely look it up!!
I found the books to be a very interesting dystopian series. Not my usual fare, but quite a compelling series. The movies don't do the characters justice.
@@RosesTeaAndASD True, But I heard that Sutherland was the reason we see snow so much in the first movie, and some of the dialogue is also his doing, he really portrayed him as a calculating ruthless dictator.
The video was amazing, I think my only issue with it was calling Lucy Grey the true victor at the end. After all although she left a mark both got what they desired and something tells me snow had her tribe hunted somewhere down the line
I’m glad you enjoyed the video🫶 As for LG I see her as the victor because, if she did survive, she is free and far from him + left her mark on Panem whether Snow liked it or not. Though Snow got the power and riches he so craved, the reason why I don’t see him as the victor personally is because it was all lost at the end of the franchise to a girl from the very same district he despises so much. But I can also recognize, as you mentioned, that despite it all, LG and Coriolanus both got what they wanted and I fs forgot abt how cruel he probably was to the Covey after her disappearance

Yeah I should've been more clear on that in the video bc in the books he assumes that she did it on purpose but uk it's Snow so it's not certain. I like to think that she did it on purpose as well and made sure not to pick a venomous one since she seems to know a lot about snakes!!

I think, like everything else in this prequel, it is a mystery. Hence, I think all theories can be right or wrong! Either way it’s fun to come up with them:))
good video! at first i thought he really was friends with distric 2 bro and that was his tether to his own humanity, and in light of the ambiguity in the 1st book of Katniss' feelings for Peeta in the context of putting up a good story to save herself i couldn't help but wonder if Lucy Gray ever cared for him, or saw who he was all along and had no moral qualms leading on someone like him to live. i watched the movie before reading the book because i remember how emotionally draining it was to read the original trilogy so i wanted to not be as taken aback by the dark moments, whoop did that plan workout Not.
I truly truly eat up every hunger games video I see. I'm completely obsessed with the series even though I haven't read the books (I read a lot). I plan to read all of them soon though.

Hi:) I think as you mentioned most of it comes from reading and school. I am huge fan of movies so when I come across characters as interesting as Snow I tend to hyperfixate on them and dig into them as much as I can. Now I know nothing about psychology and the title was chosen for a lack of a better word but I think most of my interest comes from my own love of movies and books (and school too). I can’t say I met ppl like Snow but for sure talking to different ppl and my own life experiences also play a big role in my interest in trying to understand these characters and the motives behind their actions. Idk if that answers your question I hope it does😭
HEY you should do a video for this for oswald cobblepot from the new penguin show from the batman universe. He’s such a complex villain and a good one at that!!!
I usually don’t say this, but I really wish everyone who watched the film would read the book. I love the movie, but you seriously do not get nearly as in depth on his character. His manipulative and self serving thoughts are really glazed over on film, and we get distracted by the visuals.
That's so true! I think most of the movies did amazing at adapting the books and you did not necessarily need to read them to understand everything about the characters (tho it is always great to do so) but this one is definitely the exception. The lack of inner monologue just takes a lot of character away
I agree, I went to see it with people who didn’t read the book and I had to explain the ending to them since they didn’t get where it came from because to them it was a huge shift, because they don’t get to be in his head knowing what he’s thinking the whole time
I fell in love with Sejanus due to this video. I want to watch the movie now but I cant handle anymore depression from this franchise. I cant stand Snow. Im literally so angry
@@anikabeauty547 yeah this franchise is not the easiest on the heart and mind for sure! Sejanus is a wonderful character though that’s for sure. I felt so bad for him throughout the book and movie bc he genuinely loved Snow as his friend but didn’t receive the same back and was used by him
I only mean this to be constructive. I enjoyed the video and your takes but if you slowed down talking a bit it would be a lot more engaging and easier to listen to
TL:DR: this is the most superficial portrayal of how someone became so evil. The movie does a great job of making you think its a complex thing but in reality its really just a series of things happening to a character, the character making choices and the person writing the character not putting a whole lot of thought or having very little understanding oh pysychology.
yeah the girls are already fangirling, but like in our defense...snow had NO business looking THIS fine as the VILLAIN. but in all seriousness nah yall cant fix snow hes lethal 💀✋
Thank you so much!! And you’re completely right. Ambition is a great thing, in Snow’s example it’s just that his ambition was mixed in with so many negative things hence why it may have been depicted as not amazing in the video
Snows ambition was unhealthy, mixed with hatref and fear, and it all came from his bloody grandma, and her "Coryolanus is the future president of panem,we will drink champain every day. ."🤮
I didn't buy this theory that katniss is Lucy gray or Maude ivory's granddaughter just because she knows the songs the movie sang at their shows. Practically the entire district knew the songs through their parents and grandparents who would have attended the covie shows on a regular basis since the district didn't have many any other places or activities to socialise and enjoy themselves
Hahahaha I see a lot of Bob the builders in this comment section!! You guys are hilarious frl!! Honestly, Tom Blythe makes it hard not to want to at least attempt changing Snow so I can't blame you
He’s been a well written villain, haven’t read the songbird book, but i don’t think the movie can capture all the details *he’s more unreliable in books tho it’s fact*

@ Oh I like this!!! We would be such deliciously awful Capitol advisors XD

@@metalheadlass9868 The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
@metalheadlass9868 Ballad of songbirds and snakes
Snow & Lucy Gray
The pair are an interesting dichotomy.
(Killing other tributes.)
Coriolanus is a selfish person who is forced to make selfless decisions to succeed. (Helping Sejanus and Lucy Gray.)
Because of the games, Coriolanus has to intercede for Lucy Gray.
It is an overall amazing movie and an even better book!
exactly!!
This! My mother didn't read the book and from the movie she understood that Snow turned evil only after Lucy left him.
Lll
i chose to read the book before watching the movie. one minute in i absolutely agree with you that the movie wasn’t able to capture how AWFUL it was to read songbirds and snakes. we can pretend he’s reliable but he’s not. you can read one chapter with horrible implications, hope it doesn’t work, but it does.
The book was soooo good
@ definitely the hardest book to read a while. an absolute mastery of manipulation and a constant reminder that not all “protagonists” are good people:

Interesting Detail: in the prequel, he is known as "Coryo" while later on in the story, He is simply known as "Snow"
Even Katniss just calls him President Snow, there were no implications in the book about her being aware of his full name or otherwise.
@rama2.0.1 The roses now make even more sense as well! Such good storytelling.
Yess Collins is incredible
Side eying my 'I can fix him' shirt rn--
I think snow is my favourite villain, full stop.
ALSO I can't believe he fumbled a bisexual baddie and a gay king
These comments literally make my day, I love reading them!!❤️❤️
I'm TELLING you!! This was maybe my 3x watching the movie and while editing I was very much so shipping these two idc what anyone says!!

Yes absolutely!! I had to put the book down a few times when he was talking about LG😭😭

Brilliantly made video. The points were very well-supported and convincingly detailed. I haven’t read the book so wasn’t aware of some details but have found Snow to be a fascinating character in the movie.
might be my new favorite youtuber, these videos are the first I can watch in one sitting

President Snow is the type of person that I fear becoming most.
Yeah reading it was definitely painful ngl. I did cry more for Prim, but his treatment of Sejanus and Lucy Grey's fate are genuinely heartbreaking
I think one thing to add to his elitism and obsession with appearance is that it goes back to the first paragraph of the book.
Amazing video essay! I stayed focused the entire time and completely entertained. Thank you so much :D

Thank you so so much❤️❤️ I’m glad you enjoyed my perspective/video!!

Damn bro, I need to get into this series, I love a good villain.
Snow is amazing so definitely recommend!
Don’t take too long to drop another banger now

great video BUT the books dont say lucy left the scarf with a snake under it as a trap, that's your own interpretation
Yeah I should've been more clear on that in the video bc in the books he assumes that she did it on purpose but uk it's Snow so it's not certain. I like to think that she did it on purpose as well and made sure not to pick a venomous one since she seems to know a lot about snakes!!
@@rama2.0.1that said i know some snake lovers have noted they come out after rain, following a hide in warmth. Could the snake have been sheltering then drawn out by the rain?
Honestly, that’s absolutely possible too! I just know that in the book he goes straight to blaming Lucy Gray which I shouldn’t have believed either since it’s Snow lmaoo.

Hi Rama, besides schooling and reading, what else in your life has informed your interest in understanding character psychology?
Hi:) I think as you mentioned most of it comes from reading and school. I am huge fan of movies so when I come across characters as interesting as Snow I tend to hyperfixate on them and dig into them as much as I can. Now I know nothing about psychology and the title was chosen for a lack of a better word but I think most of my interest comes from my own love of movies and books (and school too). I can’t say I met ppl like Snow but for sure talking to different ppl and my own life experiences also play a big role in my interest in trying to understand these characters and the motives behind their actions. Idk if that answers your question I hope it does😭

TL:DR: this is the most superficial portrayal of how someone became so evil. The movie does a great job of making you think its a complex thing but in reality its really just a series of things happening to a character, the character making choices and the person writing the character not putting a whole lot of thought or having very little understanding oh pysychology.

Thank you so much!! And you’re completely right. Ambition is a great thing, in Snow’s example it’s just that his ambition was mixed in with so many negative things hence why it may have been depicted as not amazing in the video
Snows ambition was unhealthy, mixed with hatref and fear, and it all came from his bloody grandma, and her "Coryolanus is the future president of panem,we will drink champain every day.

can he fix me? 🥺
maybe u can both fix each other?😭
you underestimate me🙄
tbh if there's a will there's a way!! You fix him girl, I believe in you lmaoo
Katniss ise his granddaughter with Lucy
No she’s not?? That’s the most ridiculous theory I’ve ever heard lmao
Oh but i can fix him….
I CAN FIX HIM I XAN FIX HIM PREACH
Hahahaha I see a lot of Bob the builders in this comment section!! You guys are hilarious frl!! Honestly, Tom Blythe makes it hard not to want to at least attempt changing Snow so I can't blame you
@@rama2.0.1 hahahha yeah but tom blyth looks extra amazing as snow
I can’t deny that🧎🏾♀️
Great video. Lets not use Saltburn as a ref when Ripley is a much better example.
Thank you for watching!! I never watched Ripley so could only use what I knew (aka Saltburn) hahahah. Is it a movie or a show?
Nah fam, my toxic ass trait says I CAN INDEED FIX HIM 😭😭😭😭
Me and him will go to therapy together ❤
Good luck to y'all's therapist frl lmaoo
He’s been a well written villain, haven’t read the songbird book, but i don’t think the movie can capture all the details *he’s more unreliable in books tho it’s fact*
Yes he’s amongst Collins’ best written characters imo. Definitely read the book because it is great:))
nice to return to this movie through this videoessay!
Loving this breakdown! I too adore his character so darn much….my poor fucked up Capitol boy ❤.
I’m not saying I can fix him… I’m saying Lucy Gray can keep him on a leash and they take over the world together.
I’m so glad you enjoyed the video❤️❤️HAHAHAH I mean honestly he fumbled LG so bad. Idk if she could’ve kept his character at bay though, I feel like one way or another it was going to come out.
@@rama2.0.1 shhhh…. Me and the Snowbaird girlies are gonna live in our delulu land for a little while longer 😆.
My favorite fics are ones where Lucy gray is like “shhh babe don’t kill people without telling me first…first try to make them love you with kindness instead ✨!”
I’ve been imagining a t shirt that just says “Lucy gray is my favorite cryptid”
Lmaoo well I’ll join y’all in your delulu land I think🫠
He reminds me of trump
Lmaoo plzzz I’m still trying to wrap my head around the results
Except Snow is distinguished and has manners
Wrong, I could fix him
@@toribartlett8164 *sigh* join the club 😭
