Example: Su-25 is better than Su-34 as a bomber. So, Su-27 is better than Su-34 a as fighter )

Maximum take off weight is better way to measure than only maximum payload.
Either you can have lots of fuel (for longer range) and carry less weapons. Or you can carry more armament and less fuel. You can not have both. So max take off weight is the way to go.
