It'll be on apple plus first
not sure that will make any difference. This film could have been so good but we ended up with comic book history instead.
Two more hours of Josephine sex scenes 😭😭💀
@@user-uv8bv4dm9f Knowing how awful Kingdom of Heaven was at first release and just how much better it became with the director's cut, I'm optimistic. I found Napoleon to be pretty entertaining at least but I can agree that it was lacking heavily.
@@trolleybike63 Yup can't be for certain until we actually have it but so far i'm sure most people were expecting it to be foucsed more on his tactics in warfare rather than his entire life

@@TheRealTestFry2024 yes, I do care about the truth
The shot at 1:16 is the best in the film. Goosebumps!
One true thing on this scene ;-D
Seems like the film made an exaggerated depiction of Austerlitz as portrayed in Napoleon: Total War, and fast forwarded to the battle's ending.
Exaggerated is an understatement, it’s not even Napoleonic tactics. They run around like Medieval armies yet use trenches like in the World Wars. Like how????
Is it really that difficult to hire historical advisors Ridley Scott? This was horrifying to watch, people should see the potential of sticking to the historical sources. Watching films such as Waterloo and War and Peace you catch a real glimpse into the absurd scale battles of the Napoleonic age got to. Honestly, a film focusing entirely on one battle would be ideal; just imagine the brutality of the Battle of Eylau, for example.
Yeah or even doing one about Spain or Haiti could be interesting too likes those two conflicts get usually overlooked both in books and in cinema sometimes despite both being very important like Haiti was the first latin american country to get independence and Spain was the birth of the concept of guerrilla warfare we have today while also being, arguably, the start of Napoleon's defeat in Europe
Deffinitely would pay to watch
a trilogy on Napoleon could be the way to go. In terms of battles, I wouldn't mind one big movie on the battle of Borodino.
He would probably die lol.
Ridley Scott is notorious for discarding historical accuracy in favor of making movies that look good
Okay but Napoleon won
At this point a battle from Game of thrones would’ve been more accurate
What is inaccurate about this?
All? :D@@Geojr815
i live near this battle and the corpses of 3 russian soldiers were found in the pond ;-) @@Geojr815
@@Geojr815 Because nothing about this battle scene actually took place in real life haha. It wasn't even snowing at the real battle haha and Napoleon's "grand" move to shoot the ice in reality was a very small part of the overall battle that took place and is most likely an extremely exaggerated account of that specific part of the battle or likely never even happen.
I was a Ridley Scott fan at one point in my life... hard to remember that time.
you never know, the directors cut might be alot better than the theather cut. Both the gladiator & the kingdom of heaven were mweh when they launched in cinema. But when the directors cut arrived they became industry leading
Waterloo 1970 is free to watch here on UA-cam fyi. It is a much more accurate, faithful, and focused representation of Napoleon's last battle than this jumbled mess.
🤓
How is it more accurate?
angry frog
Because it shows how exactly the Battle of Waterloo went down. And historians agree it's one of the most historically accurate movies ever made@@Geojr815
@@ThomasShelby6213 that doesn’t answer my question
I seriously don't know why they couldn't just stick to the actual history of this battle. It's like Ridley Scott wanted to do Eylau, couldn't figure out how to incorporate it into the script, and so decided to set Austerlitz in a snow storm when in reality the battle was fought underneath a bright blue sky.
cry about it
@@vyperbladez5101 LOL GOOD ONE😊
This is like watching glimpses of the real thing. Napoleon enticed his enemies to take a position and through concealment baited them into breaking their line to attack his right.
The importance of the high ground in Austerlitz is that it was initially occupied by the enemy but when the French took it the enemy line was split and open them to defeat in detail. The images here are just glimpses of the real thing.
This scene is like the resume you submit for a job vs your actual experience (real Austerlitz)
Napoleon: IT'S OVER FRANCIS I have the high ground.
No build up to any scene, no attachment to anything, it’s just so messy and rushing from one moment to the other with no emotion bond to characters
The battlefields were miles long with 100 of thousands of troops here it seems like it’s 500 men against 500
Austerlitz was a masterpiece and Scott managed to make it look like a normal trap..
And most importantly all the best moments of his career are left out…
We don’t have any build up to any scenes or battles which makes it impossible to understand what is at stake or any emotions because we have no build up. The music is not emersive or emotional,
Even the love story between Napoleon and Josephine is so blend… one scene they meet, the next he is obsessed in love with her and we don’t know how that happened. There is no connection with any scenes
The example of all this that describes the whole movie you go from a meeting between Russian emperor and Napoleon being friends to next scene Napoleon invading Russia you don’t know why or how it happened, to next scene Napoleon capitulating…
when in between there was so much happening it got me terribly frustrated
it feels like a Wikipedia resume…
For half an hour you ask yourself if Napoleon is just stupid, no charisma nothing when we know he was filled with charisma
then they show Napoleon is just bad at sex and love
The one good thing are the costumes and the color and image of this movie you really feel in the 19th century
I will end with my thought on what should have been done
It should have been done in a trilogy to take time to explain
Doing an entry like in gladiator explaining what happened before and start in his Italy campaign in 1796 which is incredible and no mention of it here… that really frustrated me.
Also using some epic music and not the none emotion music we had … maybe Hans Zimmer??
Ending the movie with Napoleon’s coronation
Second movie :
First scene starting with the trap for the surrounding of Mack’s army by Napoleon and capture of 70.000 men wjth nearly no shots fired
To then The Russians learning about it and being shocked with some epic music and then the build up and preparation to the battle of Austerlitz which was as Napoleon described the best night of his life before the battle where all the soldiers lit torches 🔥 and yelled Vive l’empereur as he walked through the camp
then following all the epic battles from Jena, Eylau, Friedland to Wagram
And then end with invasion of Russia and leaving us with Napoleon having to take the decision to retreat from Moscow
Third movie : his downfall starting
Explaining the retreat of Russia and the political situation (we all know about it no need to spend long on the thing everyone knows about)
But starting with the war of the 6th coalition and the campaign which was long and with a highlight of the battle of the nations (Leipzig)
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY seeing the campaign to defend France in 1814 which made Napoleon enter even more in the legend defending france with 50.000 men against 600.000 and doing things people would have been more than amazed with
And finishing with a much more epic battle of Waterloo it felt like there was 1000 men on the battlefield when there was 100.000 on each side and end the movie with the defeat at Waterloo
Finishing, explaining how Napoleon ended his life
And no scenes with the Imperial guard 💂♀️ you can no tell a story on Napoleon without talking about the famous Imperial guard 💂♀️
The most iconic troop in history which pissed me off even more
Now conclusion : I am waiting for Spielberg’s HBO series on Napoleon more than ever now.
What a disappointment.. I never thought a movie on Napoleon would make me feel so empty and bored …
Exactly my thoughts on the film! I like phoenix but for me he wasn’t a good napoleon! Did not come across as a leader of men to me! The 4 hour should improve the film but totally agree i am looking way more forward to Spielberg’s series! Napoleon should be done in the same way as band of brothers
Shoulda woulda coulda…it’s not worth getting upset about.

I agree. Release the four hour version of this film.
Love this extended scene
The movie is a mess, but the only thing that just drives me crazy is the sound of artillery fire. Simply amazing! 7:48
If you turn your brain off. You can ignore alot of the historical inaccuracy. As a popcorn flick it's fairly entertaining but if you know anything about the man and his battles it's hard to ignore.
Pretty boring
i disagree, aside of the inaccuracies one of the main issues with this movie is it just jumps all over the place and does a poor job giving context or building up to things. so when then something big happens, like this, there is 0 emotional impact or investment why you should care. same goes for the Russian campaign etc.
that is just poor story telling, aside of inacuracies
The battle line was almost 5 km wide. dozens of generals controlled the army. Most of the time generals took the initiative and acted accordingly. This was one of the features that made grande arme superior. Not all orders came from Napoleon. And this is not a medieval batlle for God's sake. this is the shittiest battle scene ever.
Not historically accurate
Finally, I want to judge the movie in its entirety
We watched this on theaters… and it’s quite immersive!❤
What else could we expected from a british guy taking about france in his prime
Lol
Hollywood needs the old-school auteurs like Ridley Scott more than ever
True, only they could have done so much better with this film!
1000 times better
It’s easy to make an epic movie in this man’s epic life
Maybe it's time for him to retire. Have you ever watched this movie?
When are we getting the 4 h 30 min cut?
When's the directors cut out 🤔
today
The cut that is out right now is 2 hours and 38 min. It is the version that cinema showed. The directors cut will probaly come later this year.
People really can’t just look past the inaccuracies and just enjoy a fun war epic? This is coming from a history major btw
But it's no fun! That's the problem. The real story of the battle was so much better! The story surrounding the battle was so much better! It does not even get clear how the French ended up in Moravia, what a long campaign they had already fought... it's all sacrificed for some flashy visuals devoid of meaning.
Oh my
Well, there is no doubt that Ridley Scott is a master of the visuals. I actually prefer Kingdom of Heaven over Gladiator. This preview is of the Battle of Austerlitz which as depicted in the movie is all wrong. Historically, there was no lake only a pond and Allied soldiers did not drown. Also the Allies had the high ground not the French. There are lots of articles on the net and videos on You Tube detailing all the historical inaccuracies but in my opinion it just wasn't a very good movie. It will be interesting to see if the extended cut will be released on 4K disc. Apple TV has to date not released any of it's original movies on disc.
why does it have to be historically accurate? cant people just enjoy a movie for what it is? is it that hard? does it say anywhere its historically accurate?
I understand why Scott added the Josephine story line but at what cost? This battle in the theatrical release was probably 4 minutes long with zero context. The Josephine story line led nowhere and just made napoleon out to be a cuck/simp.. I’ve literally no idea what Ridley’s logic was in what he decided to keep and cut. I’m a history guy so I could kinda fill in the gaps but I can’t imagine what it was like for a regular viewer the movie has almost no plot and jumps from one thing to another without explaining what just happened, honestly just a bizarre movie overall.
Napoleon is directing his army like Romans legions and not line infantry
man was a fan of caesar and alexander
Lol you can't trick the people who live their onto a frozen lake.
Nice
Just watch the Rod Steiger movie!
This battle was so intense. The way Joaquin Phoenix portrayed Napoleon was perfect. He gave out a commanding performance.
😂
The Battle was a travesty it didn't come close to the epicenes or scale of the actually battle of Auschwitz and the battles of Borodino and Waterloo were even worse if you can believe it Joaquin Phoenix was fine, but to me Rod Steiger's portrayal as Napoleon will always be better
An entire army could not hear a smoker’s voice in battle 😭
When is the extended cut coming out?
I respect to great Emperor Napoleon
The battle was fougth between three entire armys about 75.000 men
Here s berely a batallion
Actually three armies: the french, the russians and the austrians
absolutely loved it in theatre, so epic and grandous all the details
The battle battle in the ice lake never happened
It did but it was just the end of the battle and just dozens of men and horses died not thousands
The battle was a pure masterpiece but Ridley Scott didn’t show how it happened with Napoleon leaving the pratzen heights to the enemy and showing a weak right flank in purpose to lure enemy in. To outmaneuver from the left
I literally have a book on all these battles very detailed
And the battle was much better than shower and lasted way longer
This was just the ending and the consequence of Allies being played by Napoleon
Shooting at them while they retreated on the ice
So it did happen but at the very end and like I said a dozen of horses and men died not thousands
Those died before
Also in this scene it feels like there are just a few thousand men on a small battlefield
When the battlefield was 6 miles long
With 80.000 men on each side
Its like Titanic, but without dinosaurs
Another example of the pure genius of Napoleon
Que c'était dur pour les hommes à certaines périodes de l'histoire.
Savaş her zaman zordur. Ne Zaman kolay oldu ki?

Sad to see such budget spent on fantasy
Fun Fact, 90% of Napoleon's Russian Troops were killed by Typhus, very few by enemy fire and freezing to death.

Epicness

Thats certainly true, and while it may have been on a classes 'reading list' at the school for cadets, I seriously doubt Napoleon ever REALLY used it, It would be like The T-Rump reading "The Millionaire Next Door" or some other entry level "Think Big!" Type book. Of course, I cheerfully admit Im probably wrong, maybe The T-Rump really did read "How to win friends and influence people" or "There's One Born Every Minute!"
Scott could have shot the film in black and white, it wouldn't have changed anything. Otherwise the battle is beautiful, but relatively boring. No dialogue, no tactics, no twists (the frozen lake could have been one but it's in the trailer), no suspense, no humanization of the soldiers, no gore (the cannonballs, however, explode the men and their entrails, tearing off their heads and legs) : in short we are in a series of superb animated paintings/screenshots, but too desaturated. The only thing perfect in this scene are the cannons and their firing.
Enserio fue asi la batalla ?
I live close to this battle and the dead bodies of 3 russian soldiers were found in the pond and i don't mention that it was after the battle and these soldiers were running for their lives ;-)
Thank you very much S.P.E (( do what ever u like but don't harm any one )) 🥰⚘️💕
This wouldve been good if 1. The Marshals such as Lannes, Ney, or even Marshal Massena, Marshal Junot, making decisions with Napoleon 2. He actually protrayed Napoleon as more calulating, becuase what I got as a Character was a weak leader which. Napoleon was far from that, He was a European Conqueror. 3 I am happy with the Uniforms, 4 not happy with General Protrayal of Napoleonic warfare. 5 love the Cannon scenes.

Points for spelling the battle correctly. Other than that…

Great film, but I really got sick of Josephine. I get it; he was obsessed with her, but to keep going over that point really grated on me. I would like 15mins cut from the film to help with pacing, most of which would be her. 7/10 as it is, remove some of her, 8/10.

I plan to watch the movie. I will just keep in mind it is historically inaccurate. Thanks to all of those who pointed this out.
Russians learned a lot from this error. Ice on their own land.... what a tactical mistake
Neither was this battle fought on "their own land", i.e. Russian territory (Moravia was part of the Habsburg empire), nor did ice play any role at all in the historical battle. Pretty please do not try to learn history from a movie! Especially not this one! The whole scene is a fantasy plot.

And this is whete Sony tries to salvage a bit of the wreckage. Seriously, what is wrong with film studios? Who thought a big-budget Hollywood biopic of one of the most influential human beings who ever lived was a good idea? Here's a tip from an artist: You're not artists, you're craftsmen. Stick with rote and simple things, depth eludes your sort.
Now if there were a film made by a French studio with French actors which actually told the real story of Napoleon then maybe you wouldn't be reduced to salvage, now would you, you business ghouls.
