One thing I saw in her purchases that could be brought down in price is the yogurt.. buying a large tub would be cheaper while No they don't have the yummy flavors they do sell Vanilla or she could buy a jar of jam/preserves to add flavor like strawberry. She also mentioned she goes to the food pantries at the end of the month, go weekly and at least get fresh fruits. It depends on where you live in our large metropolitan area we have food pantries that allow you to come weekly or bi weekly save some of the food stamps for buying meat when you can get fresh produce free. She is such a good woman. We used to live like this when I was growing up in Watts. I was only given about five hours of work because I was in high school but i was blessed. Food was cheap and it helped the family. I hope that someone else in this ladys family can get a few hours a week after school.
@@simpleton8554 i don't think Fast & Loud is being racist, she just didn't explain enough. it just seems that the media always portrays each ethnic group in the same way in a certain light all the time. they do it for sensationalism, and it messes with people's views of the ethnic group, pigeonholes them in a way. It has the same effect as a stereotype does. if every time you see a person of this group mostly or only in the news in a particular light, this must be true for everyone in the group.Plus, there is this stereotype that all hispanics or african americans are on SNAP, and its not true, and i think we can both agree that's not a good stereotype, especially when some jerks out there think all people on SNAP are lazy or moochers.
I can feed a family of four for less than $4 a day, but I don't live in a food desert. It takes planning, planting, preserving, and cooking from scratch. It also helps to know a hundred different ways to make beans, lentils, chickpeas, eggs, peanut butter, canned salmon, barley, oats, and rice interesting with some root vegetables, greens, and spices.
My husband makes a decent amount for a family of 5 ( I’m a stay at home mom) but at times it’s tight because taxes are taken out , putting money away for the kids college or future, and things that pops up out of the blue and our mortgage. To help him I started planting and reproducing our produce. We have no cable 🤷🏽♀️ and I have the lowest phone plan ever ($40) . The most the government wanted to give us for SNAP WAS $7 !!! Yes $7 . A lot of people aren’t just taking advantage of the system so don’t judge the people who are really trying to ask for assistance . When we are low on food I cook a massive amount of spaghetti if there is still meat left from that I will turn it into tacos 🌮🤷🏽♀️ she is doing her best . And I bet those are her grandchildren and she is sacrificing so God will be her supplement for the rest of what she needs
a 40 dollar month food plan is stupid. get tracphone you can get service for a year for 50-90 dollars for the entire year and plenty of mins aslong as you use wifi calls when your home or at a store. No offense but people with 5 or more kids should be banned for snap you gotta control your baby making if you want gov assistance
Child support doesn't work because in 99% of scenarios they will never arrest the offending parent. All they will do is place liens on property and such but most deadbeats dont have any property.
I have never noticed anyone looking down at people I’m sure there are people like that but sometimes we think or feel things that aren’t true we are projecting we think onto others but this lady is the best grandma and such a hard working and sweet lady
When I donate to the local food bank, I think of what a family needs to stay healthy with food such as yogurt and oatmeal. Peanut butter and canned fruit along with fruit juice in large containers and butter, eggs and milk. A large amount of macaroni and cheese and cans of tuna or spam are always very appreciated. Cereal is a necessity for children in the wintertime. Buying packages of dried beans is good too for protein. It all helps to feed children.
I always give cake mixes, spices, banana bread mixes, granola bars, peanut butter, and canned icing. I just hope someone can get a birthday cake if they need it.
That is one smart lady, budgeting for a whole family as well as she does-on so little-much respect to her!😀 I have 3 boys, and I spend many times what she gets per month on food. It is by far our biggest expense(next to housing). Food prices have gotten outrageous in this country...and show no signs of slowing, sadly.
ugh first food item is pre-chopped and bagged! Is it already cost more and there's barely anything in there! Buy fresh produce .do your own chopping.. save your money
The 1st item was mustard greens. They are hard to find fresh. At our neighborhood store, you see fresh kale + collards greens only. There is no large variety. She still has to cook the bagged greens. Good for her she didn't get canned. Bravo Grandmother!
You should read about food deserts. She’s lucky she can find fresh produce at all. Usually in these areas the only places selling food is the gas station. The most poverty stricken areas in big cities seem to have the least actual grocery stores nearby.
she should try extreme couponing and buying more in bulk when she can! maybe that'll reduce the price of groceries significantly so she's able to buy a lot more food.
Beautiful, Intelligent Woman and adorable children. She feeds her family smart healthy choices on a shoestring. A Queen. The world could learn so much from her.
Of course you can feed your family on $7 a day, or less, depending on where you live and how big your family is, obviously. I live in super expensive NJ. I have tons of videos up on this level of budgeting and frugality. Tons of super frugal recipes and meal plans. Even before we fed the whole family with dumpster diving, our food budget was less than $30 a week, for a family of 5, plus pets, including cleaning products and health care products and personal care products - not just the food. Coupons, coupons, coupons. When you are on that tight a budget, you absolutely CANNOT waste money on non-nutritive items like soda, chips, and sweets. You MUST focus on getting the most nutritious bang for your buck for your children.
@Mawmaw Sue ok you get $800 in SSI. now how do you stretch that and buy food? Now if your to lazy to work, have kids your looking at $600 in foodstamps. Don't speak on what you don't know.
Mawmaw Sue, maybe if you weren’t in literally 75% of the comments arguing with people and acting like you’re not sitting on the highest horse here, people would believe a bit of what you say.
She cooks from scratch because she knows how to! Exactly. Honest to god, worked as a cashier at Walmart part-time for a couple of years. So many young women and men don't know the first thing about food or cooking! It's ridiculous. I actually had a girl come through my line, probably about 20 to 23, who didn't know the difference between a cabbage head and a lettuce head! Teach your damn kids how to cook! It's not cute or funny for someone to say oh I just buy out all the time. Guess what ! One of these days they're going to be in this lady's position and they'll probably just lay back and starve to death !
I know exactly how she feels. At 19 I had to take care of myself and had the chance to get food stamps. But I chose not to. Wish I had, things woulda been easier. But now I'm 25 and helping a friend get back on her feet.
First off, God Bless this woman for taking care of her grandkids! She's a blessing. Now, I will say that groceries in Tucson are costly compared to other parts of the country. On the NJ part of NYC you could buy meat packages which lasted you the month. There were $30 up to $100 meat packages according to budget and personal preferences. In Jersey, you could fill a basket with fresh foods for under $75 at the local market and that even includes some fish and seafood! No lobsters though. Yeah, rent is a killer, but food and utilities are affordable and healthy. In addition to that I've heard that public benefits are better out that way. Arizona is not as affordable as it seems or they make it seem. When Hispanic groceries are expensive you know the cost of living is inflated. Since when do hot peppers cost $1.69/lb at Food City? Even Fry's sells them at $0.99/lb. There's other high priced foods I have come across in Mexican grocery stores... Seems like they want the poor to live off crumbs and starve a little because it's a fashionable diet from what I heard. I'm just being sarcastic and sardonic.
soniakiwi Agreed! I live there as well. Being a border state a huge chunk of our money goes to free food, free rent, free college, free healthcare, free daycare, free everything to illegals. I have a broken back and receive $118.00 a month in food stamps (no cash).
SNAP is the SUPPLEMENTAL Nutrition Assistance Program. Therefore the amount is not 7 a day, it is intended as 7 a day in addition to what one can spend. Rather misleading.
Thanks to that news anchor at the end for sharing her own experience on television, thats very commendable and inspirational for young girls to see that she overcame the poverty and so can others 😉👌
I really dont understand why some people are so judgemental because any one of us can fall on hard times to which we need to apply for food stamps. Every single one of us are only ever x2 pay cheques away from being made homeless, unemployed and forced to claim welfare. No one is ever indispensible.
Wow this is probably the only person i have ever witnessed on food stamps whom I actually respect. And yes I know it sounds bad because ya I dont respect people who are on food stamps long term ONE BIT. She is an inspiration to us all shame on society for not providing more support to our elders
Wow that's alot. But if you eat healthy thats not that much. My son's grocery bill is 40 a week, cuz he's picky any will only eat fruits and veggies an fruit isn't cheap. But I don't get any benefits. Although with all these cuts not gonna bother now, in a year or 2 aren't they getting rid is SNAP? I think I read that not sure
I love this lady she used 1 chicken for 3 meals to take care of 2 kids, that she's taking care of. Love of her family. My grandparents were blessed to not need supplements and had lots of money, but I'm taking care of my 4 kids and grandma who loves to lie and argue, and takes food from my 4 kids. I took care of my grandpa free my great grandmother free. When it comes to my grandma I have no life. And she thinks she comes b4 kids my 4 kids 15-3 I wish I would have been poor and starved with my mom.
Dam We working families eat on 2 dollars a day it's called biscuits and gravy and pancakes and eggs ! And cool aide but know!! The poor people must eat all that stuff that's they don't need and I make stew and I am proud to say we are happy without gov help or food stamps and I make my own breads and tortillas and grow my own garden without tax payers help .
If you can do all that on $2 a day good for you but I don't believe that's the case I'm a real cheap ass lady here and I know it cost me more than that a day and I'm feeding 6 and yeah I Garden and it still cost me more than $2 a day don't know who you're trying to fool but yourself
If Aldi is an option it is typically the best place to shop and the options are far better and healthier than in years past allowing for those little extras we ALL appreciate once in awhile. Dent and bent discount grocers and food pantries are also a blessing. My 82 year old friend gets $99 per month. When social security eeks up then food stamps go down the same amount almost. Seriously?? I have priced out Walmart vs Aldi and Aldi wins hands down but some areas dont have them close by. Quality is almost always great too. Example butter per lb 2.28 at Aldi vs 3.38 at our Walmart. That percentage wise is a HUGE difference and only one example. Basics are really cheap there. I shop sales all over so I could retire early and save on the basics. Aldi even over Woodmans is cheaper. Also shop sales and clearance by managing a freezer and dehydrate windfalls of fresh clearance veggies for use in soups and chillis. A small garden is great if there is room. Learning to cook and bake is a huge cost savings and typically healthier. Its a blessing this grandmother can cook. We can eat organic on way less than $300 per month and most times eat better than we can going out to dinner which is a RIP OFF. God bless that grandparents in children's lives. If not for them, many would have a tough bitter life.
Wish the ALDI near me was like that. Yes it's way cheaper however they don't have a meat section, just some lunchables which are cheaper at the dollar store an they don't carry fruits an veggies its just a big store for snacks, which is great if you want to eat snacks all day but my kids don't eat alot of sweets or sugary things like potato chips, cookies etc. So I just go to the whole foods near me ires a 25 minute walk there an we haul the groceries back in my backpack lol.

Good idea for when the climate allows it. But when it doesn't?
Not every one has a yard.
People want to grow food, but honestly you need a yard and water hook-up. Poor people usually don't have a yard.
Exactly! My grandparents were farmers. They had crops and animals. If you rent a house ask landlord if you can raise a garden. Apartment dwellers can raise certain things in tubs and some places have community gardens.
It’s shame on American that they don’t grow food like tomato is fast to grow and ez and everything
It's now 2019 and it still is applicable in this time frame. I worked 43 yrs and receive a little bit of food stamps. They have cut my fs twice in a matter of months. If it wasn't for a food pantry once in a while, I just don't know what would happen. GOD BLESS ALL
Nobody has ever said anything to me in the grocery line, but if ever they did, I would say some things to put them back in their place.
I feel great when I swipe my card. As a single mom I need all the assistance I can get while I go to school and work. I do my part but it’s not always enough. My kids didn’t ask to be here but I’m gonna do my best to do great for them.

@Zaid Nezam he just copied and pasted this onto almost every comment,
True the original program gave you a 50 cent stamp for every $1 stamp you bought. People forget the SUPPLEMENT part!
My grandma grew up in the depression went shopping every Wednesday and fed 5 people and a dog and 6 on a sunday. My brother didn't live with us. She also made sure i had clothes. I was thinking the same thing. If you find sales and shop at the right places you make that last all month.
@Iron Man here in Michigan Aldi's you have to put a down payment on a shopping cart just to use it!
EXACTLY. GO TO DOLLAR TREE.
Maybe that’s the only grocery store she has easy access to. Not every town has a discount food store (Aldi, Save-A-Lot, etc).
In terms of Aldi, you pay a quarter to use the cart, but you get your quarter back, so you don’t really “lose” any money.
I admit that I used to look down on people using food stamps but then I realized that I don’t know their situation.

She is such a good woman. We used to live like this when I was growing up in Watts. I was blessed enough to get a job from the Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley in 1974 at the age of 14 at an elementary school playground.
I was only given about five hours of work because I was in high school but i was blessed. Food was cheap and it helped the family.
I hope that someone else in this ladys family can get a few hours a week after school.

I think it looks bad to use a black family as an example. I’m sure there is plenty of whites, Mexicans and Asians who need the same assistance. 💯
That makes you the racist
The media always uses black family's as the face of poverty, when statically it shows whites receive more welfare than any other race
Tricia T Because there are more whites than blacks you idiot, blacks are called a minority for a reason
@B A And whites are the majority race on welfare do your research
We all live paycheck to paycheck. It can be anyone! No matter how much you have.
That's why it's so important to manage your money and save it. But no one does.
Go Sun Devils true
Its more like $9.50 a day since it says she runs out on the 3rd week!
No you cannot FEED YOUR FAMILY OFF $7.50 AN HOUR!!!!!
AND PAY RENT, PAY ELEC. BILL, etc, NO WAY!!!
she needs to put those kids parents on child support.

That is one smart lady, budgeting for a whole family as well as she does-on so little-much respect to her!😀
I have 3 boys, and I spend many times what she gets per month on food.
You clearly don’t know the first thing about mustered greens and how hard it is to find them not prepackaged. Shut up.
She's 70 and raising little kids. She probably has arthritis and less energy. She's doing more than most.

This woman is amazing. So many people could learn a lesson from her, including me
SNAP= Supplemental Nutrition.....it's not meant to feed a family exclusively.
I get 15.00 a month. She should sign up for every summer and holiday program too.
Diane Gasaway I am disabled due to someone attacking me and breaking my back. I get $118.00 a month for two of us.
Appreciate what you have, don't take for granted, help others in need
That's a no. Lunch used to be like 7-8 bucks a person. Now it's more like 10-14 bucks a person.
$7 a day is very doable if you cook from scratch. Pasta, rice, whole chicken, cook your own bread, etc.

Sometimes it's mama fault for not teaching her kids how to cook
I love that she is thankful for what she has. She has a great heart.
I know exactly how she feels. At 19 I had to take care of myself and had the chance to get food stamps. But I chose not to. Wish I had, things woulda been easier. But now I'm 25 and helping a friend get back on her feet.
Bless you Ms Willie. No judgment here. Those ppl wish they could get some stamps.
When I was on food stamps. I buy ONLY on sale
I look for the reduce prices. I still do buy this way.
Swiss Horsey 7$ a meal a day too very misleading
That's usually only those 7 dollars
Thanks to that news anchor at the end for sharing her own experience on television, thats very commendable and inspirational for young girls to see that she overcame the poverty and so can others 😉👌
I really dont understand why some people are so judgemental because any one of us can fall on hard times to which we need to apply for food stamps. Every single one of us are only ever x2 pay cheques away from being made homeless, unemployed and forced to claim welfare. No one is ever indispensible.
The government should assign extreme couponers to help them. That way she would make $6.90 on groceries.
God will bless that family 100 fold...that boy is gonna be a great man and that girl will not be a hooker
She looks great for her age! Bless her heart. Nobody should be going through this at 70.. :(

I dont think lidl or aldi exist in the states....though if they did theyd be saved
