@@stevemasterson7776 ... Six pages would be a blessing in the state I currently live in... it's somewhere between sixteen and twenty here. I know because I used to volunteer at domestic abuse and long-term shelters for women with children. I've gone through the whole process with countless families and if you think it's simply a matter of filling out a few pages and mailing them in, you're wrong. The amount of documentation that is required... every six months...is literally ridiculous. People's birthday certificates, social security numbers, state IDs, etc., don't change. The paperwork is supposed to be scanned into the system. So why should these documents have to be submitted time and again? The vast majority of the questions can be answered as N/A because they don't have retirement accounts, real estate holdings, etc. If I hadn't worked with people in these situations I would probably be onboard with your argument... because I wouldn't have had the experience of seeing the system from the other side. People in need are made to jump through hoops repeatedly for a paltry sum if money every month. Unfortunately for many, that paltry sum is the difference between putting a little meat on the table a couple times a week and feeding their family ramen and macaroni and cheese all month. Just as an example, I know a man in NY state who is in his seventies, living on social security and raising his grandson because mom and dad are both drug addicts. He receives Medicaid for the grandson... and $71 per month in SNAP benefits to feed him. The courts don't force the parents to pay child support or threaten them with jail time for not doing do and the state makes him jump through hoops for what little benefits he receives for being a stand-up guy and raising his grandson instead of letting him go into the foster care system... which would cost the state a h*ll of a lot more. It isn't right. I'm a Republican and I agree that we need welfare reform. However, Democrat's idea of welfare reform is free stuff for everybody and Republican's idea is to make it so difficult to obtain that people either don't qualify or give up trying due to all the requirements and red tape. Some states literally rig the system and require just enough hours to qualify for benefits but have their poverty threshold set so low that if a person works the minimum required hours at minimum wage...they make too much money to ANY benefits... according to the state. These people can't afford health insurance. These people can't afford food after whatever bills they manage to juggle on a monthly basis are paid. The working poor face this and more every day of every month. I could also very easily list off some examples of people I have encountered who have done nothing but play the system. There are drug addicts in my state that receive aid and housing... nothing wrong with them, but a particular organization that makes all it's money from Medicare and Medicaid routinely put them on it and sign them up for anything from methadone treatments, psychiatric care, individual therapy, group therapies... and the list goes on. I know personally know of illegals... stretching back to the sixties... who came here pregnant and with four other children, no husband, who dropped an anchor baby and drew benefits right up to Reagan granting amnesty to all illegals and continued to draw benefits throughout the nineties (because when the youngest was getting ready to turn eighteen, she conveniently dropped another kid)... never worked a day...then drew social security...and continues to do so. Another group I encountered was a woman living with her boyfriend who had a sixteen year old daughter (who had just had a baby) and whose brother was also living with them in a single wide trailer. Each one claimed benefits, two of them were working under the table, the state was paying for the boyfriend to go to school to become a mechanic, they all received Medicaid, SNAP totaling over $1000/month combined, three of them were receiving cash aid and they would STILL individually go to food banks every month. Oh, and the sixteen year old received WIC for herself and the baby. Yeah, some people scam the system...and it p*sses me off. But does that mean that we should make it d*mn near impossible for those that have paid into the system and continue to pay into the system to receive the benefits they are legitimately entitled to as citizens. It always amazes me tha many seem to have no problem with the $100's of millions we give out in corporate welfare every year... but money to feed hungry citizens? The whole system is screwed up.

@dino macioci Hey there's an idea, with so many homeless people in California, what good is food stamps anyways when it doesn't even work for the people that need it the most.
I worked this program for over 40 years. I had to ask and verify things that I would, even now, refuse to answer. People trying to get by or make sure they can feed kids after rent is paid. They already know they are not making it and the interview process, no matter how delicately handled, makes it even harder. An heaven forbid they are trying to save money for a workable vehicle or, in many of the elderly cases, burial.
Or rent. If you have more than a certain amount in your bank account, you don't qualify, so you have to save your rent money under the mattress and lie about it.
I had to fill out a renewal application and they asked me where I banked and my bank account info on this PAPER form. I was like no. I answered what kind of account and where but it is completely unnecessary to know the account number. I've even signed the waiver so they can call the bank and verify the balance but I am absolutely not going to give them my banking info on the same form I give my and my son's dates of birth and succotash security info, home address, phone, email and all of that. Every single time I fill one out for renewal there is something new on there that makes it harder to gather everything in the 7 day window. I don't get to count my rent because my landlord refuses to fill out the simple form. I would get more each month if they would.

I hear ya. I get $23 a month as well. I get about $1200 in disability a month. It’s downright stupid that single individuals are supposed to live on $23 a month for food.
2016, my apartment burned to the ground, and I was living in my car because I had no rental insurance, and the Red Cross offered zero help. Filled out multiple documents through social services asking ridiculous and repetitive questions. After they outright denied me any, and all benefits, they literally handed me a list of churches that had a soup kitchen, most of which no longer participated in the program, and shuffled me out the door as if I was interrupting plans.
I was injured on the job in a state with "private" workers comp. I was awarded comp, they refused to pay. There was no help either, nothing. I couldn't walk and all I got from public aid office was " get married or get pregnant then we can help you." WTF!
@@ceciliapetrowsky2572 I don't for a different reason. Mom told me this. If billionaire company owners would pay a living wage, food stamps wouldn't be a necessity for working families. Before corporate billionaires give themselves billions in bonuses, they should make certain their employees have no need for food stamps. That's called being a responsible, fair, and ethical employer. Food assistance programs were created for the disabled and the elderly and the poor where jobs were hard to get. It is disgraceful that corporate America treats its workers like slaves and uses the United States tax dollars to provide food for their employees because they refuse to do what is right by their workers first, not share holders. Walmart, you are the worst offender. Dirt wages is dirty business.
I have been on snaps and it was a lifesaver. I feel like I was shamed off the system. I honestly should still be on it. But the application process is as daunting as she shows. What’s worse is they make you feel like you are worthless if you need help.

I work at a welfare office and when I went to training before being assigned to work, we had to read the application and the packet that came along with it. I told my trainer flat out the government is nosy and does it really expect me to sit at a cubicle and ask strangers these questions. She replied yes because that is the job. I'm happy that someone in the House of Reps is having this interrogation and it looks bad that the guy who ran the program did not have a clue she was asking him questions that were in the SNAP application. But someone in gov't needs to cut the SNAP application in half! Then they need to put more funds in the SNAP program and issue more food stamps.
The SNAP application should consist of just five to ten simple questions. That’s it. If you’re a low income person, you qualify and should get SNAP. Simple as that. But republicans are hateful, disgusting people that use all these insidious methods to harm the lives of non White people and lower, middle class folks

She really showed the absurdity of the questions they ask in order for people to receive food stamps. Every single question she asked is actually on the application.... Ridiculous!!!
And do you applicants respond verbally before a congressional committee? Or are they able to answer at their leisure, at the dining room table, where their records are easily accessible?
@thomasbonnett4800 It's worse you respond to @$$hat that doesn't know basic math and won't understand monthly payments vs biweekly. Many of the snap reps don't understand devaluation in assets, disability, or temporary poverty. The worst part is you don't have a dedicated case worker and inflation doesn't mean more benefits to help cover the increased debt. We need a cap on inflation or more government community cooperative food stores cause commercial stores don't work.
Alicia Robinson That’s so upsetting. Even worse to know some people lie about their income and marital status to get welfare, yet people who truly need it don’t get it.
This reminds me of when I did national service in AmeriCorps. I had to survive on $1,000/month with nobody helping me in NYC. When recruited they told us we'd automatically qualify for SNAP. By the time I paid rent for my room and my phone bill each month, I was literally-- not figuratively-- destitute. In my 11 months of national service I never got a penny of SNAP like they'd promised we would. I lost 30 lbs during that year from lack of food. I quite literally would have starved to death if it weren't for free school lunch food, a church food bank near my house, and my roommate taking pity on me and giving me food all the time. It's disgusting how hard they make it to access benefits when people are literally starving
I wanted to do AmeriCorps for a year after graduating but couldn't afford it. They told me the same thing--that I'd qualify for SNAP (& a bus pass). When I asked where I could live (San Francisco), they suggested first that my husband (??!!) support me. I was 21 and single. Then they suggested SIX of us rent and share a 2-bedroom apartment together from San Mateo (about a 2-hr commute each way!!!). So, to help your country (with AmeriCorps), you had to have a wealthy spouse or live like rats crammed together in a sewer. No thanks.
I tried for SNAP. I made $200 over the limit for a family of three. We were denied. Tried again and the questions were so invasive. After sharing banking information, we were again denied because of a check that was recieved for an insurance claim that was taken out 3 days later for the repairs. The time they happened to look, they saw the large amount and it was an automatic denial. Literally making $250 a week with my expenses laid out stating I made less than I paid for bills or just about broke even. I had a flip phone for goodness sakes! But because of poor timing and a lack of research as to where the deposit came from....I dont understand how people think there is fraud on food stamps when its nearly impossible to even get it in the first place.
I am on a fixed income. I don't qualify for SNAP by $34.00 a month. Before the measly COLA increase in my social security, they allowed me $16.00 a month in SNAP. A box of cereal, a jug of milk, and a loaf of bread.
Example if fs fraud: for person-pays for groceries for friend. Friend in turn give fs person that money they would have paid to buy their groceries. Fs person has cash to buy booze, smokes, drugs, whatever they can't put on fs card.

@Sasi Helen You do realize the vast majority that need the assistance got there through no fault of their own, or a series of sickness or misfortunes, right? Anyone can sink that low in life, rapidly, at any time. It's 2020 there's no need for this. There is no shame in asking for money out of a fund you spend a lifetime paying into.

I love watching her chew people up. She just goes savage.....tik tok

But also at the same time, you’re applying to get free government cash. It should matter how many kids you have and how much money you make. Helps figure out how much you should receive, when I was a child my Dad was paid under the table making a decent check. But he was able to gain the system by applying as homeless with 3 children. He would receive $927 a month while not taxing into the system. People do lie, it happens.
@@kennedysuggs4691 Those intent on lying can come up with answers easily. Most are not lying. To be required to complete an invasive application, on top of other requirements such as an interview, is humiliating. That a few scammers cheat should not be used to harm the majority who do not.

I personally don't give to the Red Cross or United Way or Goodwill. There are other fantastic charities that help so much more.
So what? Go live in another country. If you want handouts you have to do what’s required
I applied when i was in college. I was working part time to try n finish school quicker, and they asked me where my children were conceived!! That's when i knew it wasn't for me. I ended up dropping out. Went back 2 years later and graduated. Now im a MA but that experience was very degrading
Was this on the app or during the interview?

I feel like its embarrassing enough needing the help. Not like i was some lazy female doing nothing with my life.i worked and payed taxes. Jus hit a financial bump at the time. SNAP isn't a lifestyle, its temporary help for a person in need. I don't understand the point of some of the questions(outside of finances). I jus remember how i felt. Walked out with my head down... it made me feel like less of person
how much student loans do you have?
Wow I’m so sorry that you had to go through that
She's such a badass so glad to have backed her!
That's why it's ok to steal from WalMart.
Invasion of privacy and humiliation of the poor is the government's speciality.
Its criminal offense
Say it louder for the ones in the back.
Unfortunately yes
Gimme my free stuff! Don't axe me no questions! I deserve it!

I have been on snaps and it was a lifesaver. I feel like I was shamed off the system. I honestly should still be on it. But the application process is as daunting as she shows. What’s worse is they make you feel like you are worthless if you need help.
Katie Porter for president 💯
Tik Tok 🤣🤣🤣
I’d vote for her in a heartbeat! She’s intelligent and she’s powerful. She’d make an excellent president
Thank you, Mz. Porter.
When a lawyer/law professor who's written text books on finance and law asks you questions in a congressional hearing. You're gonna get your a** handed to you.
LOVE KATIE PORTER!!!!!!!!!!! She is all the above and also totally in control, stays cool, measured and slays the dragon with manners.
Tell us, what has changed in regard to SNAP as a result?
Kevin M - I filled-out the form for my stimulus check, April 2020
to be deposited into my bank account. Still have NOT receivrd it.
I applied online for food stamps.
I still have not received my food stamps. Wicked, Evil government !
@@AlmaWells Seems as though you have an issue that many do not. Good luck with pursuing your assistance, I still don't see how Rep. Porter's grandstanding changes any of that.
Hilarious.. you should quit and try comedy
I've seen it. It's a lit of repeating question
The SNAP application should consist of just five to ten simple questions. That’s it. If you’re a low income person, you qualify and should get SNAP. Simple as that. But republicans are hateful, disgusting people that use all these insidious methods to harm the lives of non White people and lower, middle class folks
I love how he got twitchy and uncomfortable with the questions. He had that look, how dare you ask those personal questions in front of everyone. Then she pulled out those papers. 🤔

Keep calling them out Rep.Porter💙💙💙💙
She really showed the absurdity of the questions they ask in order for people to receive food stamps. Every single question she asked is actually on the application.... Ridiculous!!!
And do you applicants respond verbally before a congressional committee? Or are they able to answer at their leisure, at the dining room table, where their records are easily accessible?
@@thomasbonnett4800 way to focus on the wrong part of the story genius. Duh
She needs to go !!!
Wouldn't I rather have money to buy my food at places that don't accept food stamps get real Katie poverty porter
My friend's grandma is 72 and only got $59 a month... And they took them. 😞
Alicia Robinson That’s horrible. Plenty of money for the military but not enough for the needy. I actually hate this country
My 70 year old mother only gets $15
Nyx Seriously? I honestly would ask her if she is willing to move out of the country . There are lovely retirement areas outside the US !
Alicia Robinson
That’s so upsetting. Even worse to know some people lie about their income and marital status to get welfare, yet people who truly need it don’t get it.
Sara Ford Not trying to be offensive but if she can afford it why is she on food stamps
And yet why is it still called "primitive" to grow your own food?!🥑🥝🍍
@@ambrosia-venusbelladonna835
in NYC the concrete jungle.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
AmeriCorps is just another name for unpaid slavery. So sad. Their idea of a living wage is criminal!!!
No thanks.
You mean a bureaucrat lied to you?
You’re complaining about the form for handouts? How entitled can you be?
Example if fs fraud: for person-pays for groceries for friend. Friend in turn give fs person that money they would have paid to buy their groceries. Fs person has cash to buy booze, smokes, drugs, whatever they can't put on fs card.
@@dcg590 pretty God damned entitled since WE pay into it. You know for every $50k a year you earn you pay $36 dollars into snap to help feed 36 million fellow Americans? Of course you also pay $2,200 so companies like GE not only don't have to pay ANY taxes, but get a nice kickback from you. I hope you return your SS check every month btw. Wouldn't want you to become entitled to "handouts" 🤣
@@dcg590 just saw the rest of your comments bud 😁 you better not file for the unemployment INSURANCE that you've paid into. Or use your medical insurance. Or claim any deductions on your taxes. It’s almost like they are making the food stamp form needlessly difficult so they can cause delay in providing these services
...almost?...
So kinda like voting in some states if you're a minority?
Dank'ntrans : back in 2008 during the global financial crisis my spouse and I were suddenly without jobs - for over a year. We were repeatedly denied SNAP benefits despite literally drowning in debt. The banks that CAUSED the meltdown automatically were approved for bailout funds at ZERO INTEREST with no paperwork required.
They do purposely try to deny benefits. I receive SSI & SNAP. I have to reapply each year for SNAP despite the fact that I was BORN with my disability, so yes, it is considered "permanent." Every single year, regardless of when I turn in my application, I go at least a month without benefits because they drop the ball on something EVERY TIME. It's incredibly frustrating.
@@scarlettethefieryphoenix925 socially distant solidarity fistbump.
(i don't get SNAP because i'm on SSDI and my cats don't count as kids so i'm probably not broke enough to make it worth trying, but if SSI forms are anywhere near as bad as SSDI forms that has to be a nightmare.)
Way too many people on food stamps using our tax dollars that should not have it. So what, people have to answer questions. SO WHAT!!!
She has a way of putting things into perspective for us to see.
They can literally pull everyone's w2 and just give them out a check if they qualify, instead of those degrading questions
that's the point. and I think those changes came in the 90s after clinton passed "welfare" legislation
@Sasi Helen You do realize the vast majority that need the assistance got there through no fault of their own, or a series of sickness or misfortunes, right? Anyone can sink that low in life, rapidly, at any time. A major illness and suddenly you have a mound of medical debt you can never hope to pay off, your credit has tanked, so good luck renting somewhere to live, the children you could afford to have once are now looking at you with giant hungry eyes wondering if they're going to eat and where they're going to sleep. Now to top it off the government wants everything short of a colonoscopy so they can give you $10 bucks while giving the military money that it has repeatedly said it doesn't need. And bailing out businesses with next to no prompting, no provisions, and certainly less paperwork than the average american just struggling to make it to their next meal before they decide life is too expensive and just die. It's 2020 there's no need for this. There is no shame in asking for money out of a fund you spend a lifetime paying into.
@Sasi Helen when you have to pay taxes, requesting financial assistance isnt a handout. you put in the fund, u are ENTITLED to get something out of it. plus, when you consider americans have no say regarding which senseless regime change wars we get involved in - we are without a doubt entitled to those fund
@Sasi Helen I'm not making an assumption. I'm versed in the tax rate/code. that's why I ADDED the section about the defense budget. it was a compound argument. I have NO say how the government spends my tax dollars... neither does anyone else. I am POSITIVE most americans would choose social safety programs over wars.

"Tick tock. I'll wait."
4 words that will now feature in the nightmares of every CEO and holder of public office.
Another thing that ticks me off about the questions is the same I feel about taxes - the government knows this info already, why are we involved?
The point is they want to discourage people from applying. There are people out there that legitimately need a little extra help and should be able to get it. If they want to make cuts, how about cut people who use government assistance as a way to not have to get up and do anything. I'm speaking in regards to those who are able to get up and go to work but choose not to and milk the system.
You have a true point but even if there are people taking advantage of food stamps the money we waste for Trump to go play golf would more than make up for it
What's wrong with people want to milk the system the system milk the people. Especially the founding fathers of the United Snakes of America. The American system didn't acquire their power through honesty it was through dishonesty.
