The MISTAKE that most people make in life, is they MAKE BABIES before they MAKE MONEY.
I came from the ghetto and saw my mother struggle. I promised myself I would never bring another life into this world until I had at least 50k in the bank and medical insurance.
And when my first kid was born I had over 75k in the bank. More people need to think like this to avoid a lifetime of poverty and suffering.

Short sighted parents with their priorities out of order. Not wanting the kid to think they are struggling so they keep up the facade that they have money. Ironically not realizing the kid will actually resent them if they fail and have the lights shut off or if they get kicked out of their house.
For a family living paycheck to paycheck,the House is pretty loaded toys , including the kitchen. The father is talking about buying his son basketball shoes with Grandma's dollars when he should buying shoes at Walmart or Payless. This family needs financial education,not more money in my opinion.
I don't live paycheck to paycheck myself (I am one of those rare people who is fortunate enough to have extra money to save at the end of a month), and I buy my tennis shoes at Walmart for $12 a pair. Are they Air Jordans? No. Are they comfortable? Sure, good enough for me. However, how can I say what is most economical for them to go without? Perhaps having a tablet makes it easier to manage with children. And pudge is not, necessarily a sign of being well-fed. Corn subsdies ensure that the most calorie-dense nutirent-poor foods are cheap, while healthy alternatives like fresh fruits and vegetables are, like being thin, largely a luxury for the rich. To give an example of this, a tiny pot of salad tomatoes costs $4 here, and so does a GIANT bag of potato chips. If you have to feed four people with that $4, will you buy a tiny pot of tomatoes that might make a snack for one person or that giant bag of chips the whole family can share? Even if you know that the tomatoes will be a healthier choice, you just can't afford them. That's, in a simplified nutshell, is why the poor tend to be obese while the rich tend to be a healthier weight.

Why don't they grow tomatoes? When I used to work at family dollar, we sold packets of seeds 2 for a dollar. Even broke people on social security and medicaid could afford those.

These people need to prioritize differently. My family came here from Asia with $0 in their pockets. I remember at the age of 4, my mom took me to Chuck E Cheese's with $1.75 in her pocket. We spent NONE of it because I just picked up tokens from the floor or watched other kids play. What's wrong with ADMITTING that you ARE suffering a little and teaching your kid STRENGTH? If you give them what they want, like that kid wanting "ice cream ice cream," you straight up tell them NO. Either you eat your dinner or go to bed hungry. The kids need to learn RESPECT. AND last but not least, girlfriend better start learning how to make some rice dishes. Asian market : sack of rice for $25 will feed you for a month. Stop playing. That's what we grew up on.

Most asian families have strong bonds with families and a strong sense of community. Its likely they borrowed the money or were sponsored by someone they know. Doesn't change the fact that they came with nothing.

Rice and beans are highly nutritional when served together. When Combined they create whole proteins, the same as red meat!
They have a nice big house with a garage and nice interior. Spoiled children with an iPad and we are suppose to feel bad for them? I didn't play for any school team not having the transportation while my family had to be at work and had a cheap flip phone with barely any minutes to use each month. I had to learn how to save and make money myself to buy my wants instead of expecting anything. Poor example to pick them for this when they have a better situation then so many people in our country.

Sorry to say this, but I've watched so many of these investigations and documentaries, and they all have one thing in common - the people live way above their means. This is bad money management - not poverty.

This couple does not seem to be in deep poverty. The mom works full time, they live in a two story house , there son has a tablet with WIFI and they look like they eat plenty. They maybe not be as well off, but I've seen a lot worse situations then this. There still blessed.

The wife works at the IRS and the Fed Employees make a lot more than we in the private sector! Plus, they have great Health Care. To me, they look like they live above their means and need to stop that! They also have a bigger and nicer house than I do and we work our butts off and save money! I have zero sympathy for them!

They never said they're living so poorly, they said that they're living pay check to pay check, meaning that they're barely scrapping along. They're maintaining what they have and it's a struggle for them. It's a struggle for them to save, to pay bills on time, to basically buy additional things that 'normal' families would have. Yes of course people will be poorer than them, yes it's evident, but that doesn't disregard their struggles to maintain living.

Try being 2 years out of college and having everyone want you to work for free or for next to nothing. That guy is NOT THAT BAD OFF their kids have nice clean clothes on their backs wife has a nice dress on and you have a car and a huge home what more do you want? I'm shocked you even have that with her good job and his delivering pizza. Also you may want to teach your kids to pay the bills before buying at least the second pair of $200 shoes he has. They never said they're poor. They said they're struggling, living paycheck to paycheck with no savings etc. That in it's self is a struggle to maintain their living. It is a struggle, living like that, worrying about missing bills, telling your kids no, having seasonal jobs, that is a struggle. Throughout the entire video, they never said they were really poor and under the poverty line like most of you expect from a video like this. But that doesn't disregard their struggles.
I use to live paycheck to paycheck. I knew I had to cut back so I became an extreme couponer. I was saving a lot of money on my grocery bill & started saving money, as well. I'd learn by doing this that it's not what you earn, but it's what you KEEP that matters most.😁💸

luis Ruiz Alvarez I do. The primary reason they are chubby is that they can’t afford good nutritious food. Pizza, hot dogs, cheap Chinese food is cheap and unhealthy. It has low nutritional value but it helps budget conscious people survive. Their weight is a serious problem. It could be a precursor to serious health problems like diabetes, heart disease and stroke.
If you look at poor people in the US a lot of them are over weight. The rich in many cases are thin and healthy.

I've spent the last two hours watching these "Poverty in America" documentaries, primarily covering families who are supposedly "poor". I would say that 90% of the households whose life has been documented, have several members that are severely obese, several electrical gadgets, and all modern amenities paid for by the goverment. This is not poverty. Go to the Indian subcontinent. You'll see kids sleeping rough who have had their limbs cut off by their own mothers to boost revenue when begging. That's poverty. These fatties should be forced to do manual labour; f.ex. improving America's infrastructure by building and repairing roads and such, like in the good old days. No work, no food, and only two small meal per day until not morbidly obese anymore.
I'm on Social Security and live check to check. This month with 5 days to go I have 5 bucks left :D. Luckily I have a roof over my head paid to 6/1 and enough food, plus a bus pass that will get me through till Friday. I am lucky as I have no outstanding bills, no credit cards, no loans, etc. Housing, food and transport are my only expenses and a small sum for the one medication I'm on. Yesterday I treated myself to a kebab on the way home from the grocery store or I'd have $12 left ;) PS and my friends who have credit cards do not understand that when I am flat broke I am flat broke. I can't charge a dinner out or a movie or even a cup of coffee at the cafe.

My family of nine survives on $100 a week grocery budget. Momma needs to learn how to process a whole chicken. Their house is enormous for four people. Excess will sink you. Go into survival mode: If I don’t have this, will I or my children die? If the answer is no, keep walking. I wish the family better tomorrows.

People like this will pay $50 instead of buying the same item for $1 in a thrift store. Seen it too often in over 30 years in the upper middle class area I live.
The crap in their home says a lot about them and how they threw money away even if they did this before having children. They just didn't wake up one day and was in this mess. This took years of mismanagement of money.
Nope, the people I know that will buy at a thrift shop are not paycheck to paycheck and have savings.

These people are terrible at money management. In 1987, my parents had one car, one computer, no telephones in the kid's rooms, no TV's in the bedrooms, one VCR, and we watched a video only once a week. No videogames, no expensive vacations, no expensive clothes, and they never brought soda or junk food home. Having soda or bags of cookies in the house was unheard of.

I grew up in huge poor family. We were never dirty or hungry. My mom stayed home. Dad worked 2 full time jobs and an extra on weekends. We were still poor. But we all turned out okay and even worked our way through college. It is all about planning and prioritizing. We had NO TV. Not a lot of toys. No new clothes. No medical insurance. And no grandparents to help us either. No Nikes and often no Christmas presents except the homemade kind.

I've worked a low pay job before, no kids but I make a monthly budget. It helps keep my cost down and covers unexpected surprises.
Buy some Walmart shoes for $10 and before you say they are cheaply made i used some for my PE class. They lasted the entire year. They are still in great condition i used em throughout covid for random yard work and other things. I outgrew em tho.

Agreed, the problem isn't their incomes but what they're doing with it - spending it on all the wrong crap. My friend makes four times my salary but she lives paycheck to paycheck and always struggles... and that's because she just spends spends spends whilst I make minimum wage and don't feel like I'm struggling at all because I pay for essentials and live sensibly

There are lots of people living very nice lifestyles who are living pay check to pay check. I remember when I went to college my best friend had to get a loan because his parents had saved NOTHING and they made 300k plus a year. They always had brand new cars and nice things but had no savings. My parents made a third of that and paid for most of my college because they lived a modest lifestyle and saved money.

My dad owns 3 companies makes 50,000 a month. But they got a bigger house.
They are not even remotely “poor.” They’re just living beyond their means and not prioritizing well. If I could give them advice: this isn’t even directly a money thing, but just for starters, CLEAN AND ORGANIZE YOUR HOUSE AND DONATE/SELL ALL THE CLUTTER. Trust me, you’ll be able to think more clearly and make better financial decisions in a clean, organized home. Then, STOP BUYING MORE STUFF. In an uncluttered home, you’ll think better, appreciate what you have more, and be able to make better decisions. Right now, your cluttered, disorganized home is a reflection of your cluttered, disorganized minds.

no sympathy here..everyone should have at least 3 months of bills put away never to be touched.. only in emergency. i buy clothes at goodwill even though i could afford the gap and buy no name brands at grocery store etc... i even drive a 10 year old truck. i could get fired tommorow and live off savings for 3 years. its all " live for today" mentality that puts people in these ways.

SSI /SOCIAL SECURITY/ FOOD STAMPS ,
I never buy at the big stores ,
I go to Save A Lot ,Dollar Stores ,
I buy my food, clothes,shoes at The
Dollar Store,as well Goodwill ,
Maybe 2 or 3 times a year I'll buy
Something new ,
But it be at The Dollar Store ,
T Shirts ,pants between 5 and 12 dollars,
Shoes between 6 and 10 dollars,
And in the summer If need be ,
I stop at yard sales ,flea markets ,
my land lord a real nice ,
He gave me my dishes and stuff,
my dad and step mom gave me a tv,
And my cousin got me a microwave,
electric can opener,
And other family gave me two
Cookers ,one on Christmas,
the other on my birthday,
I'm blessed to have family ,
I'm not able to drive a car ,
Couldn't afford to have one anyway,
I prefer a safe roof over my head ,
It's hard but I watch UA-cam
And watch stories about the hardships
of the homeless,
It makes me Grateful and appreciative
Of what I do have ,
A loving supportive family ,
Home ,Food ,Ect,

You know whenever they do these reports they always feature a family with children!!! Are my husband and I the only married couple struggling WITHOUT kids!!?? Now, we will be ok, once all our debts are finally paid off. But, my point is. . .I don't think this is the only representation of being poor in our society.
Me and my girl both going to finish our degrees and get decent jobs and save before we start having kids. People rush into it too fast

It's terrible when you can't be sure of how much you will have from month to month, especially if you have children you have to provide for. I'm so glad that you trust the Lord to provide, even in the worst times. I will be praying you will be doing better. Never give up the faith!!!
From the age of about 10 my son wanted to mow grass, so my mother bought him a used lawn mower. He went around the neighborhood and made good money. He mowed grass for several years, buying his own clothes, fast food, and whatever else he wanted. He was a little hustler, and still is today, in his 50's. He's a workaholic, has his own business, etc. and has made good money. Kids can make some money on their own by raking leaves or shoveling snow for the neighbors. They can grab a bucket and some sponges and use the neighbor's hose to wash their car in the driveway. Kids can paint a fence, weed a garden, walk the neighbor's dog, babysit (if they're old enough), or help the neighbors clean up the yard. If they go to a local shop, they can wash windows, sweep sidewalks, etc. There is money to be made out there, even for kids and teenagers.

I know it's easy to jump to assumptions, but if you actually watched the video, you would understand that the husband was recently laid off from a higher paying, stable job and thus, the financial troubles. Life throws curveballs at you when you least expect them. Therefore, don't belittle and mock people for their unfortunate times because you never know when they can happen to you.
John Ryan well you know darn well that it isn't safe to have kids, big house, and a car... and depending on your job. A lot of things can go wrong. You gotta have $100,000 in your saving and a stable job before you start a family.

There are a lot of competition... companies will fail... they don't stay afloat forever. Someone will eventually will get layoff. I know that I as a disabled black female will have a hard time climbing to success. I refused to have babies. Men, stay away from me. I'll just live off SSI, social security income.

yeah, in developed countries, poor people are actually much more likely to be obese. They eat unhealthy, cheap diet. Don't have time to exercise. If they are depressed, that would make things even worse.

This is what people complain about poverty today. They appeared to be very wasteful and make excuses. Poverty in the past was much worse. Poverty today while bad is much better than poverty 50 years ago. They have a house, an iPad, internet and all sorts of stuff.

The problem with all these “touchy-feely” NYT pieces on making ends meet is that they almost always involve people who simply make one stupid decision after another! Not one of them seems to be about people who are truly down on their luck - just folks who have no CLUE how to manage their priorities or day-to-day financial lives!
