For thirty YEARS, I thought something was wrong with me. Why did I obsess about doughnuts and fantasize about cookies? Just driving by the grocery store tempted me to pick up some fast carbs. I could not get enough, and did not get full. Then I only stopped eating when the junk food was gone--until the next go-round. I experienced a lot of shame, self-hatred, and harsh self criticism over the years. There was a lot of hiding. I resisted giving up sugar and flour, hard, for a long time, thinking life would be dull and drab and colorless without sugar and flour. I tried and failed many times, and finally decided not eating sugar and flour was impossible.
In 2017 I read BLE. Recently inspired by you, I bought the jars (first I borrowed some) and began prepping my overnight oats and lunchtime salads. Now I can testify: I am experiencing the "immense joy" that comes from eating healthy foods that fuel my body and leave me feeling like my very best self. This is surprising. Shocking! I still can hardly believe I am experiencing satisfaction with food and myself. Now I intimately understand what you mean about "radiating a sense of abundance" by eating this way. I have a new confidence, and ultimately, PEACE. In a word, eating this way has been miraculous! Feeling grateful and thankful.

Exercise is great for things like balance, cardiovascular, stamina, endurance, and mental health, but not for weight loss. The food we eat is what will lead to weight loss or weight gain. 👍🏼

Thank you so much for this video!! I have been struggling to get my weight loss going for years and years. I've tried several different "diets" for only a week or two and then returned to the amount of unhealthy foods I ate because I have been addicted to them. Now I know that I really can just stop eating them and focus on whole foods. I'm ready to say good bye to flour and sugar. It's not going to be easy at first but then as I move through it, it will become successful and I will feel so much better--physically, emotionally and mentally! Thanks again for sharing your journey. It is very motivating!

I just discovered you two early this morning. I'm so glad that you're sharing your story. I'm a brand new Vegan (since Jan 1st) Initially I was losing weight and feeling great. Then added bagels and other unhealthy "vegan" foods which resulted in gaining weight. You're right about Dr's not telling the simple truth. I am 100 lbs over weight. Have had been having back pain since August but nobody can figure out what it is. One Dr said simply "your body isn't meant to carry that much weight." She's right. The Vegan diet has helped with energy and improved overall feeling of well being. I'm swimming now and getting stronger every day. I am 6ft and according to people who know me "carry my weight well." My body knows the truth and, after all these years, beginning to break down because of it. Being Vegan has changed my tastes /preferences. I also notice I have better attention and focus. Who knew that what you eat has such a huge effect? My mood is also much better. So thank you very much. Your videos are exactly what I need. I hope to be like both of you. Being healthy and happy is much goal. Thank you, thank you, thank you❤❤❤

It is a slippery slope to talk about being "fat" as being unhealthy because how do you define being "fat"? My nutritionist has given me a specific weight goal but it is still in the overweight category according to the current numbers. Yet when I was that weight before I was in very good health. Also deciding what we call healthy can be tricky to. For me healthy will be largely to do with my mental health and relationship with food as well as reduced inflammation and cholesterol. But what is someone else's "healthy"?
I do really like your point about taste buds changing because it does! And so true about the exercise angle. When I got down to my lowest adult weight it was largely from walking but then I hurt me feet. Well of course the weight came back and MUCH more. It is so much better to get the eating in line first while starting to move in a gentle way.

HI, I recently 'found' you guys and I am so happy as although I am much older than you both I think this way of eating (not to use the word diet) is so beneficial to everyone young and old, never to late to start. I am going through yr videos slowly and enjoy them very much. You guys do not beat around the bush (so much talk out there on U Tube) but state it as is , and you simplify this method of eating and THIS is what is required as people need to understand to be able to follow a certain method and KNOW what they SHOULD eat and why they should not eat certain foods. When someone suffers from Food Addiction whether it is because of upbringing problems, toxic relationships, job difficulties, financial difficulties or just simply bad habits I definitely AGREE that elimination of certain foods would be best to help them stay 'on the wagon' and binging might occur.
Pls when possible can you inform us if a person cannot eat lentils or beans can we just stick to brown Basmati rice ? and how much in grams/ounces pls? not sure if coffee is allowed however coffee with plant milk ? I have seen you and John prepare the sauerkraut, it was enjoyable to see you both helping each other however I really do not want prepare it myself . I see in the Russian Section at the Supermarket they have it in loads, I thought of buying a jar. I have never tasted it, is it very sour to eat pls? and last but not least keep up the good work yr videos are inspiring and informative . THANK-YOU !

One of the finer outcomes of a plant based diet is that the food transition time (food in and digested food out) is not only much faster but far greater in volume. And addition to that comfort, when you eat a plant-based diet, what you eliminate from your body is void of offensive smell, and can even smell pleasant! I' m surprised more people don't bring up this welcomed addition.

You guys are great! love you both, what an awesome channel! Shannon you are so sweet and beautiful! You both are so smart and inspire on many levels. Plus, I’m a die hard Jersey girl who also lived in NYC transplanted to Chicago home sick often! I’ve done keto and I’ve done vegan nutritarian dr Fuhrman. / read the China Study and followed engine 2 diet. I personally lost more weight (60lbs) and kept it off for 10 years with vegan plant based diet . Keto is easier eating out and traveling but I felt better eating plants & beans. However, I did exercise with weights Because I wanted arms like Sarah Connor in terminator! ... I lost 60 lbs in 6 months. However, I got so thin and buff some people thought I was sick. So, You are spot on that working out while losing weight was much harder and it can make you too thin and can be stressful for some. Age is a factor too. I found you don’t need it to lose weight but it helps to maintain weight loss with muscle upping your metabolism. Alas, my story turns ...once I turned 50 I was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis (genetic) and could barley move... then heavy medication and slowly off the plant based diet as paleo was supposedly best diet for auto immune disease. Then exercising less eating bad carbs = weight gain ... there is nothing worse than losing weight & gaining health and then gaining weight once more. You are right it is taboo for dr to call people out. You two have inspired me to take up the healthy eating, watching portions and seeing where that leads, thankfully I have the active job of flight attendant. Keep up the great work looking forward to more!

Maybe technically diet is more important than exercise, but for me, exercise is more important. When I exercise I feel happier, stronger, more motivated and inspired - I start eating healthier and I start thinking about my diet to fuel my exercise. So, for some people starting with exercise can be more effective.

    • @anyagee9467
      @anyagee9467 Рік тому

Also weight losss is not the be all and end all when you exercise. You start gaining muscle - which weighs heavier than fat - so it may seem that it is not effective. And you ARE losing fat but you are not as aware of it because your weight doesn't seem to go down (again, because of the muscles that you build!)

mirrors tell you no? lol sorry. I am over weight too, not trying to be mean but even at 10 I knew I was overweight, didn't need a doctor to tell me. I was overweight because I ate the wrong things and too much of it. I still am not where I want to be and now it is due to my bum thyroid and menopause so losing weight is almost impossible for me, but i do not eat the wrong things and I do not eat too much anymore. People need to take responsibility for their own health and happiness. The world today is very spoiled and pampered. They need to know, quit eating so much and get off the damn couch. You have the power to change. No one is special. Just begin and continue each day. Keep at it. Own your fat. PS tip # 8 is the best tip. Just say no to the foods that are your weakness. If they are in the house , you will eat them.

I need to lose about another 100 pounds and need advice on good cholesterol type foods. I got out of being a diabetic into pre diabetes range inching closer to normal change every week. In fact Doctor told me it was ok to stop using Metformin. I do excerise along with with my healthy eating and was given green light to excerise (mainly elliptical) twice a day. In my 20's I used to jog about 10 miles a day but didn't have a plant based lifestyle .

Did you eat a lot of fruit on weight loss or consider a raw high fruit diet. I do find that I eat a LOT of fruit and it can actually increase hunger? Meaning the calories can add up without it providing the satiety. Any thoughts on high fruit. Love you guys, so honest and insightful. All your insights here are 200% on the money!!
I know your other vids talk about time restricted eating and fasting, and I wish you included it in this video. So so so important and something I wish I knew before cutting calories and slowing down my metabolism which I'm now trying to reverse by intermittent fasting.
I too have eliminated all white food like products: flour, simple (refined) sugar, milk/cheese (except full-fat cottage cheese in salad 50g 1-2× week, 4oz kefir 2-3× week, and now 4oz of goat milk 2-3× week), white rice, potatoes... Get rid of any foods that can spike your insulin or screw too much with your hormones and trigger inflammatory processes in your cells. Key is eliminating insulin spiking food products and hormone messing products and adding whole foods, all of them in moderation with some staples. (Note, I will not call them white products foods, as most of the white stuff mentioned above are man made products - ok, technically milk, rice and taters are not, but they are either heavily processed, like milk and rice, or gmo like taters - thus they are engineered and far from their original state: pasturising is one thing, ultra-past is completely different, as is uht, etc... Then, gmo wheat grown today vs. 40 years ago - not the same!!). So, avoid white food-like products, eat 2-3× a day in 8h and fast 16h, do 24h fast once a few weeks. Weight will shed off and stay off. AND, with this nutritional intake change you'll start being healthier. My migraines are gone, allergies gone, mental health improved: you are what you eat as is your brain and your gut bacteria - influencing your brain viavagus nerve and all that ...
One last point: Dr. BJ Fogg from Stanford on forming new habits, and Dr. Fung on help with fasting. With this added, your points are 300% on the money. Thanks guys and keep up the awesome vids!

@@thatdiycouple5513Here's the thing, I find it hard to pin point one or a few books. My schedule does not provide for the time to read a lot (30 min at bed time is all I have), but commuting allows for Ted-type lectures. This leads to a few books I get to during holidays and vacation. But as a visual and auditory learner, I find this process to be very informative and I learn a lot. Then, at nights I can't fall or stay asleep, I think about and internalize what I've learned and take notes. This leads to new insights, etc.
      In that light -Books:
      Outliers, by Malcolm Gladwell
Younger Next Year, by Chris Crowley

      -Few lectures by Dandapani
      Then on exercise, search:
-Dr. Mercola and Doug McGuff interview

      On general health:
Some stuff by Raymond Francis, Ph.D. (he pedals his books and products which I get why - he's got to eat. However and despite, his insights on disease stemming from a combination of nutritional deficiency and cellular toxicity is eye-opening).

This video has so many great points. As a current plant based dietitian who was "FAT" before eating this way I can totally relate. Everyone struggling with weight (and all my patients) need to see this! I didn't know how "FAT" I was until I look back now. It's not PC to say the word FAT, but now between my wife and I we use the word as a motivator. We never want to offend others or be disrespectful so we keep it too ourselves, but seeing all the (fat) people eating crap keeps us on this path. I still struggle with food as my issues with food never went away, but it does get easier. Seeing people like you guys and al the others we follow here makes a difference. Also, we always continue to expand our meal plans w more no oil plant-based meals, Thank you so much for the vid, very inspiring. Love you guys and what you do! Martin

DIY Couple: How are you dressing your salads without oil now? Would you recommend using, say, mashed avocado mixed with tamari or vinegar instead? I was taught in my college nutrition class that oil/fat keeps hunger at bay, and allows nutrients in food to be better utilized, since digestion occurs more slowly with the addition of oil/fat. Perhaps it's good to question this belief, though.

    • @martinwholefoodplantbasedd6632

If we look at oil as a processed food with overall low nutrient density, but high calorie density we see that it is not an optimal food. We can get all the fats we need from whole food sources such as nuts, seeds, and avocado. However, if someone is not losing weight (like all of my patients), they need to look at oil. You will see people eating oil in almost everything they eat . Added butter, mayo, dressings, fried foods, and not to mention cheese and processed foods. This Asians eat low processed foods w high carb and don't get fat until they eat western foods. You guys are so awesome and these are great questions!

#9 food addictions get stronger as we get older and reenforce them and they can transfer to other addictions like for me it's starches, breads and when I cut those out I transferred to alcohol at older age, before age 36 I found alcohol gross and when I was restricting starches and processed and sugars I found alcohol had similar effects so I transferred to something new.

@@thatdiycouple5513 I am mostly plant based but my husband of almost 50 years is resistant to this which makes it 5 times more challenging. I never eat dairy or eggs and I only have small portions of meat occasionally. I cannot eat gluten- it makes me ill so I mostly eat fruits, veggies including starch veggies like sweet potatoes and regular potatoes and occasionally some grain like oatmeal.

@@thatdiycouple5513 The same thing I see you two doing- listen and respect each other. He is overweight but nothing else wrong- no blood pressure issues etc. He eats raw fruit for breakfast and a salad and vegan dish for lunch because I'm in charge of those meals- so perhaps that helps. His afternoon and evening snacks and his dinner are not very healthy- often fried food, cheese, pizza and beer etc and he likes to cook but it's heavy foods. Unfortunately he makes really good desserts too.

When you were talking about missing flour and sugar and feeling like you wouldn’t experience joy and happiness from food and life again. I can see the addiction aspect of food. We could correlate that with how an alcoholic would feel when contemplating giving up alcohol. I’ve met a few dry drunks who forgot how to be happy or have fun without alcohol. Healthy foods makes us feel happy 😃

The way that I view myself being overweight is very different than for other ppl I've talked to who are overweight. I was thin & fit until I was 34-35 yrs old- then I got sick & gained a lot of weight over a lengthy period of time. Fast forward... I've now been overweight for 14 years. I do not have a stigma (embarrassed, sad, sensitive) about my weight. It's what happened as a result of my being really sick. I view it no differently than if I had a scar from an accident or something. I also have only very recently come to actually "see" the extra weight, whereas for the majority of these years I could only see it in photos. I think what bugs me the most (as a result of being 'fluffy'😉) are the activities that I can no longer do well, the way the added weight feels on my joints, and as superficial as this may sound... wearing cute clothes that do not serve me well as an overweight person. I found a natural dr who's helped in healing what was wrong & now I'm super excited to finally be able to lose all this weight!
I have a question- with the holidays approaching, how do you handle being able to stick to your new eating plan when at the big family dinners?
Do you take your own meals? Thnx bunches for your encouraging & super informative videos!!

That DIY Couple Thank you for replying! My natural dr isn't helping me with the weight loss, but rather had helped me to get well from where I'd been sick.
