- Watch as I struggle to walk and climb the stairs with my luggage and camping bag (while holding a shaky camera)! Moving in alone was definitely not easy … the struggles of an international student in these times! Featuring my cosy and aesthetic little room and how I try to organise everything before starting my new life :”) Warning: This can be quite a boring vlog as some parts are really random and I just kept them for the memories :P
P.S. I’ve been feeling extremely overwhelmed since officially starting school these past two weeks, which explains the belated uploads and blog posts, but I promise to post something more useful next week (related to medical school applications)! 😊 Stay tuned!
WHO AM I?
I am a first-year medical student at Oxford University, coming all the way from Singapore (international student)! I will be using this channel to document my journey (with vlogs like this) and share simple tips and advice for aspiring medics and aspiring Oxbridge students :)
disclaimer: i'm a very different person now (even the way i look, speak and act), please don't judge me by my old videos :P i may slowly remove/archive some of them to make way for new perspectives. not doing much youtube now due to other priorities!

Oh my Gosh! I did a summer English seminar in Oxford two years ago and stayed EXACTLY in that staircase at Exeter! And yes, I almost blacked out carrying my huge suitcase up those stairs!

But I love the windows. I would definitely set up a comfy spot there with a cushion or some pillows to have my morning coffee and read. I bet it looks so pretty when it rains. Makes me miss the big window with window seat I had in my childhood home.

I was on that staircase in 1983-4, but in a room overlooking Broad Street. Staircase 9 was smaller in those days, because the archway that you went through in the video went into a very small third quad which hadn't yet been filled in; the entrance to Staircase 9 was under the Broad Street archway. Your room is very small indeed, but as you say the window is nice and you are absolutely in the centre of Oxford.
Wow, it's really cool to hear how the college has changed over the years! Yes, my room is one of the smallest in college, there are bigger rooms, but I really like it nonetheless. And as you said, the location is great! :)
@@ZQmedicinspires With any luck you'll get a bigger room next year. I was lucky to get three years in college, because I was a scholar. Staircase 9, then Staircase 6 in the front quad, then a very small room overlooking Turl Street on Staircase 13. Lord Crowther-Hunt was Rector, and it was his special project to fill up the third quad with more rooms. (The third quad was dark and dingy and was called Dustbin Quad because it was where the dustbins were kept; ever since, the college has had nowhere to keep its dustbins.) Those extra rooms were crammed into Dustbin Quad, and also that very narrow staircase that you walk up in your video. In the 1980s, the Broad Street gate was kept open all day, and anyone who wanted to walk from Blackwells to the Covered Market, say, could take the short cut through the college. No one was concerned about security and all the colleges were generally more accessible to everyone than they are now. There was no CCTV, of course. One thing in your videos that hasn't changed: the basement with the washing machines. It's exactly as it was. I am surprised it hasn't been upgraded. Exeter was always a friendly college, and the friends you are making now will be your friends for the rest of your life. I am now 57, and my best friends are still the ones from my Exeter days.

I actually went to Oxford a couple of years ago. I remember one summer night in second year, I was at a party and there was this girl there who was really, really drunk. At one point she let out the longest, loudest fart I've ever heard come out of a girl. It smelled so awful as well. It was shocking yet hilarious at the same time, definitely one of my funniest memories from university. Such fun times.

hiii I’m from Singapore too and I really hope I get into oxford in the future. How difficult is it to get in? And are there extracurricular prerequisites?
I'd say focus on exploring your subject ! They're not that interested in extra curriculars , but like to see your passion and commitment for academics. Just work out what you love and why you love it. Then, you can read, listen to podcasts, watch films or anything else to learn and push your interest further.

Before! This is my first degree :) At Oxford, you get two degrees for undergraduate Medicine, one after the first 3 years, and the final degree at the end of 6 years. There's also another option for graduate-entry Medicine which is shorter (4 years if I'm not wrong).

For my college, we got to indicate a preference of room type (not the exact room number / staircase), but you may or may not get it depending on availability. This varies depending on college.

Students generally pack way too much. Bring the minimum and buy what you need locally.
My pet peeve is that I realized I threw away something or left it back home 3 years ago and I need it now. Hence why I over pack everywhere I go.
Or just order online like from Amazon and have it delivered to you, instead of packing it up and lugging it to your room. And you can save packing space by removing things from their retail boxes, like those ear pods.
I would be happy with THATS it’s bigger than my room lol😂

I was wondering if you guys have bathrooms in your rooms?
Some rooms are ensuite (meaning with bathrooms in the rooms), while some are not (so there's a shared bathroom for a few people in the same corridor). My room is one of the smallest types and is not ensuite :)
I assume you do not hage a scholarship so how do you finance you stay and fees seeing that Oxford is not cheap especially for international students or do you get support from your family?
For now it's mostly through support from family and family friends! (and my own savings for living costs)

I thought they had domestic staff (called bedders?) at Oxford colleges. Or has that stopped with covid-19?
We have Scouts who come in to clean the rooms weekly (but not during the lockdown period).
You must be clever! As a 10-14 year old wanting to go to Oxford university I try to learn as much as possible so I have better chances of getting in, I always doubt myself though :,)

You guys don’t share dorms at Oxford ? Like you don’t have two beds in one room?
There are double sets too, but majority of rooms are single (at least in my college and as far as I've heard for other colleges)
What about washroom? Is it attached with dorm or common washroom
It depends on the college and type of room. Some rooms have an ensuite bathroom, but mine was a shared. In my corridor, we had two showers and one toilet for about seven students. But again, this differs across rooms and colleges.

Yes definitely! Many tourists visit the University. Last year many colleges were closed to visitors due to the pandemic, but most of them seem to be open now. Some are free to visit, while others charge a small fee. There are also guided tours available :)

It just looks like a plain room in an old building. The windows are actually very pretty and it looks like she can set up a little cushion on there to sit and read in the mornings. What did the dorm rooms look like at your university?
I'm at the same college (Exeter) and my room in first year was at least 4x bigger than this. My scholarship meant I could afford an A tier room, this is likely a D tier room
