Disney animation of a classic tale. Beautiful princess Rapunzel has been locked away in a tower since she was captured as a baby by an old hag. Her magical long blonde hair has the power to provide eternal youth, and the evil Gothel uses this power to keep her young. A young Rapunzel becomes curious about the outside world, and when a prince uses her tower as a refuge, she asks him to help her escape. Loosely based on the German fairy tale Rapunzel in the collection of folk tales published by the Brothers Grimm, it is the 50th Disney animated feature film. The film was directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard (in the former's feature directorial debut) and produced by Roy Conli, from a screenplay written by Dan Fogelman. Featuring the voices of Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, and Donna Murphy

Something that was so simple in this movie but really broke me, was when the king and queen were behind the door, about to start the lantern lighting. And they stood back there, silent, the queen looks over at the king and he’s so worn down, so tired and heartbroken after having done this for 18 years, wishing so deeply for his daughter to be found. You really could feel the depth of his pain in that moment. It was such an understated moment that really stood out to me. Same goes for when one of the guards came to them, and one nod, one facial expression from him and they knew they’d finally found her. This movie is a wondrous thing. It’s exciting, funny, meaningful, dramatic, wholesome, and downright scary when you think about how horrible mother gothel really is. Truly one of my favorite Disney movies of all time. It was done beautifully.

It sounds stupid, but this movie was the first step in realizing something was wrong with my mom. I got to see it in theaters and while I adored it, I started having what I now know was a panic attack during the 'Mother Knows Best' song as I realized she sounded like my own mom. Years later, I no longer have contact with her and my life got so much better.

Actually, you aren't alone either! This movie made me realize that Mother Gothel was "so nice and pretty" like my own Bio Mother, when beyond what my eight-year-old self so thought, it was actually the truth of exactly what kind of person she was and still is. Textbook emotional abuse and narcissism to a literal tea, and I even remember my younger self 'complimenting' her after watching the movie for the first time and thinking telling her that "You remind me of Mother Gothel, Mom!" was a genuine compliment overshadowed by love and compassion, when in reality it was the coldest fact check eight-year-old me pulled before even understanding the truth and being confused as to why she reacted with anger and the ugliest frown I saw stretch across her features instead of the genuine love and care I held for her through manipulation and gaslighting.
As well I have gone hard no contact with her for almost a year and things have been substantially better in every way without her around. Proud of you for being strong and surviving, and cheers from a fellow survivor who is still keepin' on! Rootin' for ya hun!
p.s. Also rootin' for you and your fiancé! I wish the best for you both, well wishes from a fellow Rapunzel! 💜☀

This is far from stupid!! Movies, books, and different forms of media can be so incredibly helpful in realizations like this. The first time I watched this movie I didn't fully connect the dots but after a few watches, everything with Mother Gothel terrifies me because I see so many connections with my mother. The co-dependency, the manipulation, down to her catchphrase of "Great, now I'm the bad guy..." I'm so so sorry you can relate to that. It's awful. But having that realization is such an important moment, and it's so empowering! I'm so glad you were able to get away from that, and I'm so glad you found your Eugene!! I hope that happiness and peace continues!

Like, imagine how genuine and intimate that would feel after 18 years of "love" only being shown indirectly through a wall of hair and to your wall of hair. 🥺 Mother Gothel only ever reached out to get to her hair. Her real mother reached out to get to *her.* 💕

I think Mother Gothel is such a good villain because she's so realistic. Take away the magical healing flower and it's a story about an abusive "parent" keeping a child isolated and dependent on her. A lot of Gothel's behaviors are textbook examples of emotional abuse and manipulation. The whole point of the lanterns was to bring Rapunzel home/find her and celebrate her birth, and if you look closely the King and Queen’s lantern is very specific looking and none of the others look like it. Then Rapunzel keeps a lantern from falling into the water, and it’s the same lantern that her parents sent out. It did it’s job, it found Rapunzel. I think it’s a very sweet and cute touch.

At the time, "gaslighting" wasn't as much of a wide known thing. It really helped a TON of people realise they were being gaslit themselves, especially by parents or authority figures. Once you see it, it's impossible to unsee! The concept existed beforehand of course, but Tangled made it real and understandable to many people. And I think it's a pretty good thing to teach your kids. Toxic relationships are not something to take lightly. The sooner you recongnize the signs, the better! • @ginster458
      @ginster458 Рік тому +31

Yes! A lot of times, the villains (especially the older ones) in Disney are flamboyant and over the top ( not to say Gothel isn't THE drama) and their goals are power or immortality or riches, and they send out henchmen or monsters or use magic, they plot and trick and scheme. And while we can easily extrapolate lessons from that, that's usually not what we deal with in our own lives. But Gothel's main instrument to get what she wants is gaslighting and negging. "It was a joke! You're so sensitive!" "Look at yourself, you could never do that!" "Oh I was just being honest! Great, now I'm the bad guy!" Like, these are things I have heard from my own mother ( who is a good mom, but a flawed person) and it's so important for kids to clearly hear that is WRONG. That is what the villain does.

She has a magic flower she has cared for for three hundred years then some entitled rich person gets sick and instead of using the flower properly to heal, steals the whole thing and uses it up in one go. It was a pretty selfish move on behalf of the queen too. They paint Gothel as caring for the flower as selfishly hoarding the flower and the queen destroying it as perfectly reasonable which is a strange position to take and we only accept it because Gothel is a bad person and we are told the queen is a good person.

Lighting artists are soooooooo important in 3D animation! Without them, you wouldn't see anything except blackness. They create all the virtual lights within the scene, so they're in charge of the natural light like the sun as well as the dimly lit scenes like in the bar they were in. The underwater scene where her glowing hair saves them, that entire scene was made possible because of a lighting artist. It's an entire art form within itself, and it's vital to get it right so that the correct mood is set and the audience feels immersed in the scene. This can sometimes make or break a movie.
I don't blame you guys for not knowing, by the way. A lot goes into these movies so it's hard to fathom if you're not already in the industry :P

    • @cmlemmus494
      @cmlemmus494 Рік тому +42

And for the benefit of people who don't really understand the technology, I'm just going to explain that what a lighting artist is essentially doing is telling the computer WHERE the light source is, how bright it is, and what objects block or change that light, then let the computer calculate the colours and brightness of the light at a certain "distance". If you didn't do this it would be almost impossible to get things like shades, translucency, and reflections correct.
An animator could manually colour the hair yellow, but they couldn't accurately predict how that will cast light on the scenery.

To me the most amazing part of this movie was Rapunzel’s walls. All around the room you can see where she painted them all but it also tells a story of her growing up. You can see her starting off in lower areas and shelves with letters, learning the alphabet. Then it goes onto painting herself and Pascal, things she sees almost every day. Then there’s here modern phase where she is painting more abstract things and things she wants to see like the lanterns. Just a great attention to detail of what her actual progression as an artist would be.

What I love is that when Mother Gothel touches Rapunzel with affection, she only ever touches her hair. She pets her head and strokes the strands and even caresses her face with it. When she grabs Rapunzels shoulders or arms, it's to subdue her, shake her, when she caresses her face or hugs her, it's to manipulate her. She calls her "Flower" or "Petal" and only by her name to scold.
And then comes the boat scene, where Eugene brushes her hair out of her face, so he can freely look at her. The only times he ever touches her hair is to help her carry it or to cut her free.

The official 'Tangled Junior Novel' (issued by Disney Press) specifically recounts how Mother Gothel learned the "Healing Incantation":
One day, an old woman named Mother Gothel was singing softly to herself during one of her walks along a craggy hillside. She looked down and discovered the Golden Flower.
Just as she was about to pluck the flower from the ground, she noticed that it was glowing. As she kept singing, Mother Gothel's brittle voice become strong and clear. Her old bones didn't seem to ache any more. She looked at her shrivelled hand and saw that all her wrinkles were gone. suddenly, she was young again, and her eyes widened with selfish delight!
Right then and there, Mother Gothel decided to leave the flower where it was, so that she could continue to use its power. It was a secret she kept all to herself. For centuries, she lived contentedly, singing to the flower each day, making it glow with the magic that kept her young and beautiful. And because of her covetous protection of the flower, no one else benefited from the blossom's healing gifts.
So technically it wasn't "she knew what to sing" it's more of a "sing to the flower long enough to get healed"

One little bonus bit of trivia I recall about the movie: Zachary Levi, the actor for Flynn, credits the reason he aimed for this role to him being a fan of the video game series Kingdom Hearts. He wanted to try to get a role in a Disney movie specifically in case if that movie ever became a part of a future Kingdom Hearts game (as those games involve the main characters visiting different Disney worlds and interacting with the characters from those movies), in which case he could potentially get to hear his voice in a game series that he loved. Tangled was included in Kingdom Hearts III in 2019 and he indeed got to reprise his role as Flynn in the game :)

I loved this movie as well - one of the things I really appreciate in "Tangled" is that Flynn (Eugene) is allowed to be a character in his own right with his own need to grow and an equal part in the story, rather than simply a love interest for Rapunzel. For me, that, along with them both being willing to sacrifice for the other, does a beautiful job of showing that in a healthy relationship both people have important and equal parts to play. It's a tough balance to pull off, but to me "Tangled" did a brilliant job of making their two stories come together in a natural way while not prioritizing one character over the other.

In the industry Tangled is a very important movie that many people don't realize. Before Tangled came out Disney Animation Studios was struggling; they released a couple 3D films like Meet the Robinsons and Bolt, and even did their last 2D film The Princess and the Frog even though people at the time thought that genre of film was dead. Tangled almost wasn't made because Disney wanted to branch out and do a more satirical musical film since the classic fairytale films hadn't been working out for them.
Tangled basically revolutionized a whole new era for Disney Animation, and also proved that even modern audiences are still interested in a princess musical film. Rapunzel herself was Disney's first 3D princess, and also a new modern one that's independent and doesn't need to be rescued by prince charming. She kind of paved the way for Anna and Elsa in Frozen only a few years later.
Since Tangled there's been some fantastic Disney animated features like Wreck-It Ralph 1+2, Frozen 1+2, Big Hero 6 (based off the Marvel Comics), Moana, Zootopia, and Encanto.

This was always one of my favorites but here's a few facts about the movie if you three are interested!
    1) Flynn Rider was created by getting a ton of the female employees at disney together at what was later called the "handsome men" meeting. He is what they all considered to be the hottest guy basically.
    2) Rapunzel actually catches her parents lantern they lit at the start of the festival while she and Flynn were on the lake
    3) Flynn gave his position away when stealing the crown on purpose so that he could create a distraction and later get away from the stabbington brothers with the crown and keep it to himself. More profit when you don't have to split it 3 ways right?
As an extra: How the mother got the song for the flower is actually described in the tv series! Tangled: The Series is also pretty good at filling in back stories and other things and is pretty interesting as well when you learn more about the world and how everything came to be. Many adults even watch it!

I grew up with this film, so I don't view it as something I can objectively criticize, but you guys truly made me feel like I'm watching it for the first time and falling in love with it all over again, even though I know this film by heart already... so THANK YOU for that! 💛
Also, Tangled: The Series (3 seasons) is just as outstanding as this. All the songs are of a Broadway level quality, all of the cast returned for another project and visuals are just beautiful (once you get used to it, since it's quite different from the film). It's really worth it. It's definitely not only for kids (I watched it as an adult, no regrets).

I adore Tangled (and its Television series). I think what makes Tangled stand out is the extra work put into the story for everyone. While Disney knew their Princess movies were a guaranteed hit with little girls, little boys weren't interested at all. So a new angle to the Rapunzel story was created, not only with extra action and comedy but an incredible three-dimensional male lead with Eugene. Instead of a bland prince (just there for the romance) Eugene was a living breathing character and essential part of the story. The new Disney films should pay attention to this storytelling. Rapunzel and Eugene worked great together, their action scenes were as fun as their romantic ones giving them both equal time to shine and in the end they both got to save each other. Every character in the film brought something to the story that all had great chemistry (with good messages for girls and boys how to be good people). Even the villain, Mother Gothel, while called a witch, didn't cast any magic spells but used deception, manipulation and gas-lighting to achieve her evil ends. That's a very adult take on a villain. Tangled is a family film that appeals not only to little kids but adults as well as your joy and laughter watching the film proved.

If y'all are interested in more Pascal and Maximus, there is this 6 min. mini film about Eugene and Rapunzel's wedding called "Tangled Ever After", it's short and you guys can enjoy it in your own time, some great Pascal and Maximus and it just gives you a little picture to what their wedding was like.

The King crying gets me every time! I had such a great relationship with my dad (who’s no longer with us) and it reminded me of him and seeing how much he loved his daughter.
This movie is such Gold in so many ways!
Btw, the song is explained in the tv series spoilers…
It’s an incantation from an ancient book (as far as I can remember…) or written on the walls of ruins somewhere… there is a lot of lore around the sundrop(flower) and the moon stone… too much to go into but yeah… there is also a reverse song that decays everything…

Always always appreciate and point out the role of her father the king. He didn't have much screen time but I always love to see fathers intense love for their children, it is unfortunately not shown enough that there are fathers out there with a fiercely strong love and bond with their children that is just as strong as a mothers. This man was so distraught about losing his baby girl and not being able to find her for 18 years, and it was killing him. So emotional, so beautiful. 💖💙💜

I didn't see this addressed anywhere else, so I thought I would mention it. Donna Murphy and Zachary Levi are both Broadway stars, so it makes perfect sense that they have the pipes for their roles. Donna has been nominated 5 times for a Tony Award and has won twice for Best Actress in a Musical for Passion and The King and I. She has also been nominated for countless other awards. Zachary has been nominated for the Tony for Best Actor in a Musical for She Loves Me, and for several other awards.
As for Tangled, I count it as one of my favourite Disney movies. I will never understand how people say Frozen is better than it. It holds up under multiple rewatches, has fantastic music, fantastic storytelling, and the scene with the lanterns might just be the prettiest thing I've ever seen. I'm glad you guys enjoyed it!

It couldn’t really be a copy of Frozen because Tangled came first. And I’m sad they kind of lost the magic of this much better storytelling as soon as they did Frozen because Tangled really sets the bar high. Rapunzel and Eugene even make a brief cameo in Frozen. Tangled was Disney’s first movie transitioning to CG movies like Pixar, after the Princess and the Frog was their final traditionally animated princess movie.

I grew up under strict control of narcissistic relative and I find this movie incredibly important for children and even teenagers everywhere. It perfectly portrays how these abusers are. Extremely controlling, always damaging your self esteem and conditioning you into, what's called, learned helplessness so you'd always be too scared to leave. They can lie and manipulate for years without slipping even once. Telling you that they love you in one sentence and criticizing everything about you in another. They love the idea of owning you like an object but they don't really care about you. When this movie came out, I was already young adult and figured it al out. Several years later I cut that person off entirely.

35:15 Welp! I made the mistake of looking at The Oak in this moment and I saw the split second it really hit him emotionally. The reunion scenes are done so well with no dialogue - I feel like it increases the impact on audiences because everyone can relate to the body language, and every loving parent would get hit hard by the story.

The movie Onward might of had the thematic elements of D&D but Tangled actually has way more of the feeling of what it's like to actually play D&D. Like that whole scene in the mining area is absolutely something I would throw at my players. Plus the main character has parental issues and that is the cornerstone for most player character backstories lol

this is such a great reaction! admitedly i was very much in tangled's target demographic: i was a 9 year old girl when it hit theaters and i adored it. i've loved the rapunzel story for as long as i can remember, and i was an old enough kid by that point to be hearing the news and trying to find every trailer on youtube.
a big thing i remember is rapunzel was my first fictional crush. well, her and ariel from the little mermaid. it's funny, it took me so long to realize i was a lesbian, but i remember vividly that one day my mom asked me why rapnzul was my favorite princess, and my response was "because she's pretty". that should've been a bit of a clue lmao.

And that I wanted my dirty blonde hair to be just as long as Rapunzel‘s hair (never happened tho. 😂) Gotta love Pascal and Maximus they’re hilarious and true friends. Mother Gothel made me so so so extremely mad as a kid and scared the crap out of me and she still does piss me off but just doesn’t scare me anymore. Didn’t even know Zachary Levi voiced Flynn Ryder until the first Shazam movie cast was announced. Everyone who made this movie possible is amazingly talented and did an amazing job. Definitely an A++ movie for me.

Some behind the scenes fun facts: Rapunzel's wall paintings were mainly designed by Claire Keane, a production artist at Disney. Claire's father is also legendary Disney animator Glen Keane, who was the original director of Tangled and still stayed on with an animation supervisor role.
