I'm still going to keep suggesting you guys react to the Cheetah Girls, but hearing you talk about how hardcore rabbits are, Stef, you should react to Watership Down.
No apologies necessary, Budz. With everything that’s been happening, I’m hella impressed that you’ve managed to keep up with producing content for us at all. Mad respect. 🤘🏻
I love how this movie is a racial Allegory, yet it's not dumbed down for kids. It understands that they're smart enough to understand the message. Also, I'm delighted that you and Maria are safe and well, Sam!
Same here! Definitely one of the best animated movies that addressed it very well! Reminds me of when I grew up with movies like Balto, An American Tale, some of the earlier Land Before Time movies, etc.
It actually took me s very long while into my first watch of this movie to realize that. May just be because Im autistic but I want to point out that other things explaining racism is not only ‘dumbed down’ but made a lot more overt. In those sorts of videos there’s almost always one victim, one or a few aggressors, maybe a few bystanders, and maybe a few friends of the victim. But it paints this right side wrong side narrative that often skips over how widespread it is and why it happens or the variety of the intentions behind it. In zootopia, like in real life, everyone is a little but racist and you can see how they got it. Judy’s parents don’t like foxes just as a rule that was likely passed down from her parents. The first time Judy sees a fox on the job she’s inherently suspicious, but when she tries to burry her prejudices she still micro-aggressions him (Idk how to verb that), not on purpose but because those prejudices are still there. Clawhouser calls her cute by accident, not knowing the implications or that it’s an insult. Later Nick does it on purpose to antagonize her. I feel like there are a lot of people who are more concerned about being thought of as racist than they are actually being racist or not, and I think it’s because of that black and white narrative, the dumbed down one that says racism is bad and racist people are bad people and good people are entirely not racist. Zootopia breaks that narrative and offers a much more realistic understanding of how our world works. Having racist thoughts, and to a certain extent, being racist, isn’t evil! A lot of that was put there by society through no fault of your own. What’s evil is purposefully instilling those same thoughts in the next generation, or blocking other’s attempts to break the cycle of hatred.
35:54 Emmett Otterton was screaming about night howlers because he's a florist, therefore knows what they actually are. That's why he was targeted. He'd figured out what was going on, and was going to tell Mr. Big.
Yeah I love this fact about Emmett, and I wish the movie had just made the tiniest bit more of a point about it. I didn't connect the dots until a third or fourth watch. I think if we'd had the littlest bit more happenstance emphasis on his plant knowledge, it would have caused us more provocation to speculate about him having some relevant knowledge and would have pointed our suspicions toward someone using a plant. Actually now that I've said that, I'm so glad they DON'T push it more, I take it back -- the fact that it's so easy for the audience to just roll with "oh wow predators are going nuts, guess it must be some predator problem" is what teaches us that we're just as susceptible to bias as the characters are. In another mystery context I'd want the clue to be a little more clearly a clue, but in this film I think it's great that we're allowed to just practice a little prejudice for the sake of the moral in the end.
"But he's a sweet little otter." Animal racism aside, Judy obviously knows nothing about otters because "sweet" isn't something I'd call them--especially male otters.
@@finnwhelan8442 they are rapist. female sea otters forcefully resist mating. So forcefully , that the males hold the female's head underwater to subdue her. Sometimes females drown. sea otters murder other animals even when they don't get food out of it, it's just for fun. they also rape baby seals
I thought they set the twist up pretty well. She's constantly being belittled and ignored, her name (bellwether) is a sheep that leads a herd, and she has a note to "call Doug" on her computer when they ask for her help with the traffic cam footage.
Always loved the choice to use allegories for both racism and sexism. It reflects so easily how you can face oppression in one or more areas of your life and still not understand how your thinking can be problematic in another area that you don't deal with. Plus it was just a plain fun movie aside from all of that too.
@@a.g.demada5263 Exactly. That scene gave me flashbacks to my childhood. So many people would want to pet my curls without asking. I'm glad it's more of a known thing now to keep your hands to yourself.
So I always over analyze movies and about the 5th or 6th time I watched this movie I realized Bellwether had ram figurines on her desk, flower stickers on her computer, and she had Doug’s number on a sticky note on her phone! They literally told us she did it 😂
@@hypermaeonyx4969 that would seem like the least narcissistic callback considering weaselton is selling animal version of Disney movies in this very movie
The reason Nick knew she had ten hours left is because at some point, she told him she had 36 or 38 hours left. Considering he knows math just as well as Judy, he was able to deduce.
1:02:00 The whole point of it being her is she's "a wolf in sheep's clothing." If you think there's not enough setup, you're playing right into what they were aiming for.
COMPLETELY agree with your comment about wanting more close platonic friendships in movies!! I would love to see that more - not every single relationship HAS to be romantic/sexual.
@@LudmilaRamirez7 Lol that's okay 😂 I think the directors meant for that to happen with this movie. I just meant generally speaking, even if there's really no hint of romance, a boy and girl in a movie can't even look at each other without people practically naming their kids already (and it's fairly close to that if they're the same gender as well. Not every single character has to be gay). People have loving, platonic relationships. It's just that kind of thing, where people act like there's no other kind of relationship for people who aren't family, that gets on my nerves. As someone who really values friendship, I hate to see people treating it with so much disdain, like it's some horrible fate or something.
I agree. I also understand how they could end up as a couple, but they seem just as compatible in terms of friendship so I'm glad the producers left it that way. You can definitely see in more recent animation movies especially those that are pixar and disney they prioritise friendship and family relationships just as much as romantic relationships which I appreciate.
The fact that Nick filled it all out destroys me because you see he truly wanted it. Also it makes me laugh if you read the bottom question it’s have you ever been arrested or convicted and he ticks yes but crosses it out 🤣 and if you look at bellweathers notepad you see the name doug and his number
i've literally never heard the argument that judy and nick getting together could be used as a concept of inter-racial or queer relationships from anyone else before, but I'm so happy that someone finally recognised the potential! it's undeniable that these two had amazing chemistry in this film and I feel like the conflict that would arise from them being in love with one another would be a great concept for a sequel.
I think someone actually made up a fan comic as a sequel somewhat showing the inter-racial part of it when they come out to Judy's parents as being together.. The comic is somewhere here on UA-cam I think
@@Kyolover8 ah, it shouldn't surprise me, considering there was an insane amount of fanfiction and fanart about these two:") but i just hadn't seen anyone actively make this point. good to know!
If you look at Judy's struggle as a woman going into a majority male-dominated space (such as the police force) it makes more sense in my opinion. The environment being, in this case, more aggressive and assumed that she can't take it. That she's a small animal, therefore also seen as weaker. She is confident and takes up place, refusing to stay put, which irritates her superiors and co-workers. All visibly bigger and stronger, and her boss doesn't take her seriously when she explains that a predator had "Gone wild" because she would see any big animal as aggressive. In the case of Nick, you could see it through the lens of racism, of socio-economic status (Nick's mom apparently "scraped together enough money to buy a brand new uniform") which are also topics that intersect a lot. Dunno, just a thought.
I kind of thought the same thing. And I figure Bellwether could be the same, as she is a dark mirror of what Judy could’ve become if her internalized prejudice had been allowed to fester. White women in particular (and I say this as a white woman) are in a position where they are both part of an oppressed group as well as a group of oppressors, and they can either use the privilege they do have to lift up other oppressed groups or push them further down. But like the guys were saying at the end, the neat thing about this movie is that any category of animal here could be an allegory for any group and it would work. Being a member of one minority group doesn’t automatically make someone exempt from being prejudiced themselves. Anyone has the potential to become what they don’t want to be.
The fact that people DON’T pick up on this is so baffling to me. When I first watched the movie, it stood out so obviously and intentionally. The perks of being female I guess :’)
While misogyny is definitely also an aspect, I don't like the idea of you looking at this mo is very pointedly about racism and being like "actually let's look at this thing that I can relate too instead". Judy gives me Asian vibes, people tend to think of Asians as having certain career paths and staying in their lane, casual racism towards them is normalised, and even the cute thing where a lot of Asians, Japanese and non-japanese alike, don't like being called "kawaii" by non-asians. Nick I see as brown-Hispanic, personally cause as a black woman I can't see him as black. And also the sly nature to being a criminal seems to fit Hispanic stereotypes since we are usually seen as aggressively criminal.
@@LangkeeLongkee I didn't mean to diminish the fact that it is about racism at all, because it definitely is about racism, nor make it relatable for myself. I just thought to bring another point of view to the conversation, and an interpretation that I haven't seen brought up for this movie that could fit when seen through a different point of view. It is a movie about racism But it's interesting how it can portray other issues as well when looked at differently. Doesn't make the fact that it is mainly about racism any less important.
my mother calls this movie liberal propaganda..... it really made me re-evaluate my relationship with my mom. love her to death, but yikes mom. it's a bunny cop movie
@@danielrebora1350 right like i feel like it's really weird that many conservatives believe that anti-racism is an inherently left wing idea, i feel as though it shouldn't even be something political, just a moral idea. though what do you expect from conservatives
I feel like we need to reevaluate the word "propaganda" - it's been thrown around too much lately. Like if you think of propaganda as promoting a specific point of view then any movie with a message is propaganda (essentially making all movies propaganda, because they all have some kind of message or agenda since the whole point of movies is to make you feel something right?).

I think it's often missed though, Bongo didn't give her parking duty cause it was her first day he did it because she was a rabbit. What should have happened if they were swamped with stuff to do is she would have been assigned a more experienced partner with a less important job to shadow and learn from. Like how they assigned Nick to Judy when he joined the force at the end of the film.
"Prey outnumber predators 10-to-1" does work if you think of normie racism, but it's perfect for colonial oppression, e.g. apartheid-era South Africa (75% black), India under the British Raj (99.94% Indian) and the Pacific/Australasian British Empire (started 10% white)
I do ship Nick and Judy quiet alot. In the scene where Nick tells her about his childhood, you notice Judy place her paw on his arm and I think that's the scene where I started shipping them. Zootopia is my all-time favorite Disney animated movie.. will always be a 10/10 for me.
Haha, same here. I thought the build up was quite nice. First that show of vulnerability, and then later him calling her 'Judy', and then just the entire bridge moment, and then the wink, and finally the moment in the car and the end dance. I agree with them about wanting more solid platonic relationships, but gosh are these two too cute. And it's just such a sweet relationship. I love their characters so much. Zootpia is always a great rewatch for me.
@@isbammoi3358 when Judy asks Nick to be her partner on the police force, the way he looked at her made me feel like he was starting to fall for her. And that's why after her press conference interview he felt heartbroken when she went to use her fox repellent. @@gk2370 Oh you mean Return to Zootopia by Browntable? Yeah I may have watched that two or three times already. Its very impressive to see what he did by himself.
There’s def some awkward things that are what I call, light racism 😂 my other half is black and I’m mixed Thai. He gets a lot of people asking about his hair on a night out and I get people saying hello in Chinese or Japanese, they’re usually trying to be nice. The awkward one is “oh you’re a couple I’d never put you together” or “your kids will be pandas, black, white and Asian” 🙄
yikes, the panda one -- and agreed. I always thought i looked very 'white' cause i'm half white and half hispanic, but i guess to others i clearly look hispanic or something else. It's odd how you can see yourself so differently. I am constantly asked what I am or people will speak to me in their language, assuming I am their ethnicity.
Damn. The panda one actually made my eye twitch. If I were you it would take every ounce of my strength not to hit someone who said that. I'm black and my other half is white. Neither of us is mixed and black and white couples are common but our combination is not. A black woman and a white man are still seen as an illegitimate couple. No one believes a white man and a black woman can actually love each other. To them, for a white man it's only sexual attraction and white men only fetishize us and don't really see us as people. And for black women, to them we only want to be with white men because we hate ourselves. Supposedly we think black people are ugly and bad and so we want to be with someone who doesn't look like us or whatever. Especially if the white guy happens to be rich, then obviously the black woman hates herself and is only with him for his money. It isn't fair. Children stare at us with confused looks on their faces and a lot of adults glare at us like they want us dead. Sometimes I am so scared. Why can black men be with white women and not deal with this nonsense? I feel sorry for our future children and what they will have to deal with. We will love and support them and do everything we can to protect them but I wish it didn't have to be that way.
The majority of me is white because my mom is portuguese descent and my dad is black besides his grandfather being white; so that's why I say the majority. Some people think I am asian (like Filipino mostly,) because there are a lot of them in our country; some others believe I am hispanic/latino, a couple thought Hawaiin (or Polynesian if that is the right term to use), another thought Indigenous; but there have been a lot of people to recognize that I am mixed, as well as people who thought I was just Portuguese. My boyfriend is black and I don't think we get any rude critism which is a relief. But were from Bermuda and I believe the majority is black, but there's portuguese people here who came from the Azores (including my family); there's also other caucasian ethicities here, as well as those from asian countries, some Indigenous, and a few of those from Hispanic/Latino countries as well. Although one thing I am confused about is that, you are called bermudian if you were born here, such as black, portuguese or other white ethnicities; but for some reason it is like asians or hispanic/latinos are not considered bermudian; I don't know if it is because they were not born here or not, but people always consider them as foreigners. It just confuses me. I don't really know the point I was trying to make, but I thought I should share my story.
@@xsweethearto Your story is beautiful. Me being black is obvious because as far as shades of brown go I'm definitely on the darker end because of my dad. So no one can question that I'm black but that is exactly why no one believes I'm also Native American. I'm Native American from my great-grandmother on my mother's side. Blackfoot Confederation is our tribe and we're also Irish. But no one can tell that because well look at me. And no one believes me when I say so.
@@truthseeker9249 Thank you! 🥰 Aww some people are ignorant, (if that's the right word to use). Funny little detail here: the naturalist yoga instructor elephant's name, "Nangi," literally means "naked" (feminine form of the word for the lady elephant) in Hindi. I have a feeling it was on purpose 🤣
I'm so happy to hear updates about Maria! My heart did sink when you mentioned your cluster headaches, I developed them last year so I literally feel your pain. Oxygen treatment slowly made mine go away, not sure if it's something you've used yet!
@59:36 Oppression is more about power than numbers. Slaves outnumbered slave owners in the American South- it didn't prevent or end slavery. Also, Judy and Bellwether's storylines are both allegories for sexism, and in many countries (the ones where females AREN'T aborted or abandoned as infants) women *do* outnumber men and their contributions to society *are* "underappreciated." It is common for women's skills to be 'underestimated,' and for a woman to be perceived as "cute," weak, a "dumb bunny" (see: "blonde bimbo"), and generally less capable than a man. It's also common for women to be seen as "prey" to men's "predator"-- which Zootopia subverts many times, but addresses *directly* in Nick and Judy's relationship. Ultimately, Zootopia is about the prejudices that we all have, regardless of which group we belong to. We can be discriminated against on one axis, while we ourselves discriminate on another. The message is less about calling out other people for their prejudices, and more about being aware of and overcoming the prejudices we hold against others.

there actually is a quota in some places for stuff like tickets. that's why cops are usually harsher on tickets near the end of the month (in those areas) so they can reach it by the end of the month. even if there's no set quota, people who write more are often seen in a better light than those who don't. a lot of police chiefs and other higher-ups say there's no real quota but other people who work in LE say that there is. at least an unspoken one. its banned in some places but not federally mandated as far as I'm aware

OMG super happy to see you and Maria back safe in Sydney ❤ Sorry to hear you got sick Sam, I just got over it a couple of weeks ago, wasn't fun! 😣 Hope you get better soon !
So glad Maria is safe now and that you guys are together. I like that the film goes into implicit bias as well as straight out racism, cos it is true we don't often realise that we are being racist. It's just the the way we have been raised and don't know the harm we can cause. I also agree, it's a buddy cop movie (although seeing an interracial couple would be cute) if I were to have a ship going into a future film it would be a LGBTQIA+ one, of Clawhawser and Chief Bogo, I think that would be interesting on a number of levels ie body type subversion, and also a queer and interracial relationship.
Mr Big may be a Mafia boss, but he's *also* a good father - his daughter, Fru Fru, asks him to spare Judy and he does, because Judy saved his daughter's life. He trusts Judy enough to make her godmother to his future granddaughter (and the immunity from arrest due to his friendship with a Police Officer is probably pretty good too, given that, you know, *he's the leader of the Mafia!*) It's also shown that Fru Fru isn't any less ruthless than her father - note that the complaint isn't that he's icing people, but that he's icing people *on her wedding day*, thus implying she has no problem with icing occurring on any other occasion!
I've been literally laughing at calling a bedtime fart a "victory toot toot" for the last 10 minutes and now my face and stomach hurts from cracking up so much!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
OMG, I have seen it several times but just now I have realized that the leopard kid in a play literally has tiger suit... 🤣“tiger cannot change its stripes” / “leopard cannot change its spots” 😂
I love you guys I always look forward to your videos even if it's a movie I myself wouldn't watch, your commentary is so worth it. And NEVER apologize for taking time for your health, I'd rather wait months for a video if it means you're taking care of yourself vs you two just pumping out videos, you have a wonderful community who care about you two and understand that life happens.
Did you notice in the last scene how Bellwether calls predators "preds"? That could easily be a stand-in for a discriminatory nickname for a specific minority group.
Me and my family have watched zootopia multiple times on family night I have even caught my mom watching it a few times by herself this became not one of top Disney movies but animated movies ever
Someone also pointed out that Bellwether’s eye pupils are round and not horizontal slits like the ram and other sheep, meaning that she was using round contacts in her eyes.

I didn't notice the racial allegory at all the first time I watched the movie and I was an adult. Not sure if some kids would notice it.

I never thought of that, but it makes sense! Floriat know the common name and usually the scientific name
oh wow, i never noticed this before... they should've made a bigger point about it cuz it's actually genius

I thought they set the twist up pretty well. She's constantly being belittled and ignored, her name (bellwether) is a sheep that leads a herd, and she has a note to "call Doug" on her computer when they ask for her help with the traffic cam footage.
Really ? I didn't notice that before
I saw it coming though. She seemed too sweet and nice and her last name was a dead give away as well.
There were definitely little clues along the way that she was more manipulative and in control than she seemed. I thought it was really well done!
One of the sheep is at the press conference pretending to be a reporter, and maybe(?)one of them was in the truck that almost ran Nick over.

Always loved the choice to use allegories for both racism and sexism. It reflects so easily how you can face oppression in one or more areas of your life and still not understand how your thinking can be problematic in another area that you don't deal with. COMPLETELY agree with your comment about wanting more close platonic friendships in movies!! I would love to see that more - not every single relationship HAS to be romantic/sexual.
I agree but i kinda shipped them, sorry im so basic i couldnt resist😖😭
@@sh_joy i totally agree
@@LudmilaRamirez7 😊
I agree!! I imagine that Judy is a white woman whilst Nick is a black man - both can be oppressed whilst also being an oppressor
It is a movie about racism
But it's interesting how it can portray other issues as well when looked at differently. Doesn't make the fact that it is mainly about racism any less important.

Haha, same here. I thought the build up was quite nice.

He trusts Judy enough to make her godmother to his future granddaughter (and the immunity from arrest due to his friendship with a Police Officer is probably pretty good too, given that, you know, *he's the leader of the Mafia!*)
It's also shown that Fru Fru isn't any less ruthless than her father - note that the complaint isn't that he's icing people, but that he's icing people *on her wedding day*, thus implying she has no problem with icing occurring on any other occasion!

Someone also pointed out that Bellwether’s eye pupils are round and not horizontal slits like the ram and other sheep, meaning that she was using round contacts in her eyes.
when they’re in bellwether’s office you can see a sticky note by the phone that has the number and the name of doug
so nice to see both of you guys back on the couch! great video
