I agree, I was pretty underwhelmed by the reveal of him being blind, it's an ok movie but not one of his best. Thanks for not pretending you loved the movie.
You definitely have to lean into the mysticism BS of the movie to really love it. Otherwise it's really just kind of a poor man's M. Night movie where the twist is interesting in that it makes you reconsider all the crazy action before - but only a little bit, because again it's in the context of the supernatural/religious. I know personally when I first saw it I was kind of in awe of it but these days I've become a great deal more honest about the power of belief...and how it's really just insanity.
A very good, very underrated Denzel movie is "Man on Fire".
You was almost sad when the bad guy order to burn the DaVinci code book..well he knew already that is a book full of lies and nonsense.
the craziest part about this movie is that he's been blind the whole time, literally walking living and fighting by faith
or he could just read brail and be partially blind and not fully blind.
the movie never explicitly states that he is blind. would be cool if it did.
it implies it at times and then shows the complete opposite at other times.
what it does SHOW and TELL is that he has FAITH which is more than seeing.

I like how they showed us that over and over but nobody saw it. He tripped up the step and ran into a table in the very first place he loots.

Remember the finding the boots on the guy hanging and he saw the boats or how about when he was looking in the cars for people's feet to find boots or how about he saw the mouse. He wasn't blind. In an interview thy Eveb said he wasn't blind. A lot of people just like you thought it was blind but it was not bit shows That when people have faith in the bible they can memorize Things in their head to keep the faith in their heart

I like to think he's not 100% blind because opening scene shows him hunting a cat from range and 1 shooting it with a makeshift bow n arrow..
Now I know losing one of the core 5 sensed strengthens your other ones..
But him being 100% blind implies he's supernaturally protected AND enhanced. In combat and survival.
Which is why I believe he can BARWLY SEE shadows n shapes. Cuz he wss pre war.. perhaps losing majority of sight from the mukes radial light blasts.
It has tons of contradictions regarding his vision...
In the end it only matters to KJV Bible Christians believing he's blacked out blind and one of the gods in the old or new testaments imbued him with powers.
So trying to look for logic n practicality is difficult when religion is involved.

The movie is great when you rewatch it knowing he is blind. He never does anything without hearing or smelling it first. There are times he wasn't afraid of something happening around him because he couldn't see it.
I do think that it is a different experience once you know, but I think there's a couple times where he reacts/acts like a sighted person (which the movie infers to be divine intervention). I don't want to sound critical at all since I really do love the movie and these things were portrayed this way to make it seem as though he was sighted.
In the beginning there's two things: he is able to strike the cat with a bow and arrow perfectly from like 30 yards away despite not being able to see or hear clearly since he is wearing a gasmask and the film shows how loud his breathing was (to him inside the mask it would be even louder), and when he reacted to the corpse hanging in the closet as a jump scare. He 100% should've smelled that and not reacted that way.
In the town shootout, he snipes a guy that was behind him and on a rooftop effortlessly (divine intervention). Really any time he fire a gun and hit someone would be impossible, but can be chocked up to divine intervention.
@@primary2630 The only times that Eli acts as a sighted person, is when his eyes are shifting or looking directly at people when he hears them, but that's because he used to have sight. He still unconsciously activates his eye muscles to "look" in the direction of interest, unlike people who are born blind and never needed to develop the muscle activation to look in any specific direction.
Gas masks are masks, not helmets. They're made to protect the eyes, nose, and mouth. They cover the face only. So, his ears are still exposed to the natural enviroment. He was able to strike the cat, and the goons in the shoot out, later on, due to his hyper-developed senses, empowered by his faith. Making his actions implausibly successful.
The corpse serves as both a jump scare and as misdirection, to make us assume that Eli reacts to what we as the audience see. In reality, it's the door that fell off the hinges that make Eli jump. The sudden loud noises made him think that there was more going on than he expected from the smell alone. If you look closely, you can see his head shifting back and forth between the doors, as he's frantically tracking the sound.
It´s pretty obvious in the first time, if you use your brain.
Visually it was outstanding , all that slipped by you . Gary Oldman was outstanding , Denzel Washington was outstanding , The 'style' of the movie evaded you . I am not a Christian , in fact I am an atheist , yet I absolutely loved this movie .
I read that Gary Oldman was considered for the Truman Show, before Jim Carrey was cast
That was my experience with "Prince of Egypt". Just because I don't consider Christian mythology to be non-fiction, doesn't mean the story can't be emotionally powerful or awe inspiring. Heck, The Matrix was critically acclaimed but I think most people didn't consider it to be true.
Civilisation has collapsed. You are charged with saving human knowledge. You must select one book. What do you choose? The a to z of agriculture, medicine, science or engineering? Nah, the bloody bible! 🤦
Also atheist and I agree with your statement. My biggest issue is the fact the book is the King James Bible which is considered a very inaccurate translation. I guess it was chosen over the NIV or ESV bibles as they aren't as well known.
@@hingethunderchristian here, the Kjv is not inaccurate, but it does contain more verses than a regular, more recent translations like the niv, esv, lsb or my favorite nasb because throughout the time of scribes copying manuscripts there were additions of other verses, and wording, some think out of malice but others don't based on the fact that most of those verses are from another one of the gospels that contain them and they think that these verses where written so that people without access to the other ones may know something that was really said by Jesus and not quoted there or something written by the authors. but overall the kjv is one of the closest literal translation, the guy who wrote the kjv wrote it from more limited manuscripts (you can check James White's videos on the kjv) as oppose to the ones that produced the newer translations. but today there are available 6,000 to 5,800 manuscripts and portions of Greek (original translation) manuscripts (depends on how they're counted) and although there are many variations (millions) those variations according to textual critics like Dan Wallace and James White plus more, those variations don't affect majority if the text, Dan Wallace spoke of 99.9 or 98.9 percent of the meaning or essential doctrines are not affected, but the variations are spellings of names differently, different ways of wording the same thing in greek, and misspellings from scribes, also where there are at times "Christ" they put "Jesus Christ" or vice versa (that's considered a variation) but overall there are thousands of other manuscripts of just the new testament in other languages. plus (i heard Bruce Metzger argues for this from Voddie Baucham's "why i believe the Bible") argue that 95 or more percent of the new testament can be reconstructed based on the quotations of the early church fathers from their writings. check out James White debate with Bart Ehrman and Dan Wallace's debate with Bart also, along with Dan Wallace's video "is what we have today what they wrote then?". but overall the Bibles today contain footnotes that speak to different wordings or what other manuscripts say, etc.... also Mike Winger has a video on the addition of verses or different wordings on his channel called "how the Bible was changed"

Atticus Ross is the name of the guy responsible for the soundtrack, he is a very talented film score producer. He captured the feeling of holiness and being in an apocalyptic landscape. All is lost, but also not lost.
@@Rubiks_LIVE That guy is going through his anti-theist phase, don't worry he will grow out of it and cringe at it in retrospect like the early sceptic community on UA-cam that worshipped Hitchens, Dawkins, Harris, and Dennett. Looking back the "New Atheist" movement... yikes did they get it wrong. There influence is almost dead and most of their ilk devolved into radical leftwing cultists and they shat all over the secular beliefs they thought would flourish in the absence of religion.
The scene where he fights the highway gang with the woman with the cart, before he fights them he backs up into the overpass so he can hear them better.

Did you realize that Eli was BLIND the whole time? Rewatchimg it is like rewatchimg The Sixth Sense after knowing its secret. The whole movie takes on a very different feel.

Song is "How Do You Mend a Broken Heart?" released by the Bee Gees in 1971 -- what you hear in "The Book of Eli" is the version by Al Green, recorded in 1972.
Eli quotes verses from the Bible in this movie.
In the bar fight scene he quotes Genesis 3:17-19 where God curses Adam for disobeying Him by eating the forbidden fruit.
In the scene with Solara he quotes the first part of Psalm 23, which is one of the most famous passages in the Bible.
During the walk before they find the old couple's house, he quotes 2 Corinthians 5:8 "for we walk by faith not by sight".
In the final scene, he begins to quote the entire Bible beginning in Genesis 1 with the creation of the world.
And just before the credits he quotes 2 Timothy 4:7 where the Apostle Paul is about to be executed for his faith in Christ "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith".
An apocalyptic movie, trying to keep the faith alive after the end of civilization. Nothing much deeper than that. I'm not religious at all, but i still enjoy this movie 🍿
The fact that Denzel didn’t get at least an Oscar nomination for this is criminally underrated

I enjoyed watching the second time and seeing all the clues that he was blind. Especially the sounds at key moments being so profound. Thought it was a cleverly done film.
11:24 This movie is very dark, brooding, and introspective but this one moment from the reaction is a shinning beacon of our humanity that we can all relate to.
funny she says " maybe im blind" because so was ELI. he spent 30 years walking to find the place to keep the book. just as jesus spent his 30 years =D. when you watch it back you see from the first scene the signs you missed that he was blind. as he felt the legs of the person to feel his boots. Every other sign from him not looking people in the eye to him hearing and smelling things. the twist is fantastic.

As a Christian what made this movie great to me was its ability to tell a decent story, deliver decent action scenes, and all while being respectful to Christian beliefs. Eli was an imperfect man that sinned and failed to live by what he read in the Bible he was tasked with delivering, just as many of the Christians you read about in the Bible.
And in the end Eli realized his mistake.
The spiritual themes in this movie sets it apart from so many others, that's what I loved about it the most.
I'm not very spiritual in general or religious at all, but whenever a hard ass mf quotes a line from the bible you know shit is going down

Denzel & Oldman were just superb individually and their interactions together.
Shot in sepia really set it up in it's tone, a heavy Apocalyptic movie, that from the 1st scene of the cat, which I willed he'd decide against doing what he did, but as it's a raw, brutal survival film, even as an animal lover, the film let us know it would do what the movie needed to do.
The positive ending of how strong the human spirit is in some of us, to pevail, to do the right thing, no matter the odds.
The score! Was haunting in its magnificence.
Wether you liked the movie or not I believe it makes you think about your faith and spiritual beliefs. I personally know my true reason for being here on this planet. I didn't realize my true purpose until a few years after my father's passing in 1985. I am not a church goer, for me wherever you are is the Church after all God created the Earth. This movie is one of my favorites because the Book of Eli was taken out of the KJV Bible along with several other books. I'd like to get a Bible or two that was printed before the KJV version just to read for myself what was written back then.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Pretty good review dear, thank you for this.

@@MrMpa31 I've spoken to several reaction creators, and they've mentioned that it's alot of hate comments if u do not love a movie. And I notice it myself now too 😂 It's also a reason why people have turned off comment notification so they do not read new comments, since it gets quite overwhelming

Wow. I had to check IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes after hearing the rating you reported. IMO this movie is more like 9 out of 10. And no, I am not a religious zealot, quite the contrary. But it is a damn good film better than 95% of movies put out in the last 10 years.

You might not like it this movie, and that's completely fine. But if you watch it second time, you start to notice signs from the start that Eli was blind, we just assumed he wasn't and completely ignored it. That is the magic of this movie. It gets better the second time, you just need to look closely. Give it a try second time, remembering Eli was always blind. If you watch second time don't forget to tell us.

The Book of Eli is ultimately about the power of ideas and how they can be wielded for good and bad purposes. Carnegie wanted to use the Bible as a means of controlling the minds of those around him, while Lombardi and Eli were keepers of knowledge who only wanted to benefit humanity.

As far as Denzel Washington movies go, The Book of Eli isn't very highly ranked. I'd start with the one he got an Oscar for as leading man, Training Day.
There's a great (and challenging) movie called Glory, starring Denzel Washington AND Morgan Freeman AND Matthew Broderick AND Cary Elwes AND Andre Braugher (and with some other actors whose names I don't know). It's about a black regiment in the U.S. Civil War. I highly recommend it.

This is why I like HONEST reaction channels. I don’t like it when people say they like a movie or song just because it was recommended & they feel like they must say they like it so they don’t hurt anyone’s feelings.
We all have different tastes in what we like to watch & all movies aren’t meant for everyone to like.
I appreciate you watching & giving an honest opinion. This is one reason I like your channel. Another is because you don’t feel the need to constantly comment & ask a million questions nonstop like some do.
I feel the constant commenting & questions (that are all answered shortly) takes away from the reaction because they can’t be paying any real attention to the movie. You stay focused on them so you understand what’s going on. I’ve seen some that talk so much they have to rewatch portions to know what’s happening.

Lots of great actors in this movie, not just Denzel, Mila, and Gary. Jennifer Beals played Solara's mother, the late Ray Stevenson was Redridge, Malcom McDowell played the man who wrote down The Bible while Eli dictated it. And my favorite actors actors that no one ever catches are George and Martha, the old cannibal couple: Dumbledore and Madame Olympe Maxime from the Harry Potter movies.

He may not have been blind the whole time. Eli in the Bible was losing his sight. A lot of clues that he is blind, but also a lot of moments that make it seem that he can see.

A 4?! I'm going to assume that's the critics' score. If it has a Christian in it who isn't villainized, they'll give it a lower score than it deserves. If he was a Jew carrying The Communist Manifesto, this would have gotten 9s or better.
Just been going through your channel and watching some reactions recently. I love the reactions you put out.
For me this movie was fun specifically because of Denzel and Mila. Their performances and dynamic are what make the movie for me. I do think that the making of the film is really interesting. Knowing that he is blind if you go back and watch again you can see how there are clues in his behavior throughout that point to that.
26:00 I think there lies a misconception: The character Gary Oldman is playing doesn't "believe in the words in the book". He wants the book to show people that he has it, and to claim things he tells them to do are written in the book. Basically he only needs to have it, to have power over people.
Basically he only wants it as legitimation of his power not because of what actually is in there.
Edit: As it looks like at the end he wants to actualy read it: He needs people to know that he can read it or to know what is in there still.

He wants to do what people have done since the start.
He will use the actual words to gain authority and then bend the people to his own will.
He will preach the actual powerful words and then twist their meaning to fit his own means.

I just think it would be easier for him to just make the rules up himself, so he wouldn't have to justify why it's ok to kill for him, despite the words saying "though shall not kill"
Such a good movie
This is my all time favorite Denzel movie .I saw it in the theater and didn't realize he was blind until the reveal of the Bible being in brail .I'm a little surprised you didn't really enjoy it ,but different strokes for different folks !😀👍,guess you were just Meh about it .
Never lose faith is what this movie is and the world will end up like this it’s too bad the woman wasn’t allowed to join him
I imagine this film was personal to Denzel, having the rare opportunity in a mainstream movie to play a role that positively reflected his faith. His dad was a minister, so in a way I think he was able to honor his father in his acting work in this positive (though dark) portrayal of a minister / prophet. He admits he wasn't always true to his faith throughout his career, but it's become more personal for him. (Which hopefully your faith is personal saving faith also, and not just traditions you were passed down).

I was worried that the movie would be a straightforward "yay we have the bible now, time to rebuild mankind _" type of affair, but I was pleasantly surprised by how nuanced the story was. You have Carnegie, who hasn't even read the bible - Solara's mom lets us know at the end that he'll die without ever having read it - all he knows of this book is that it has the potential to give him a great deal of power and control. He is also the villain, and receives a most delightful and satisfying comeuppance as he feverishly watches his empire crumble.
Denzel's character, on the other hand, has actually read it, and when he's in the car with Solara he sums it up in one quick phrase - the golden rule, do unto others as you'd have them do unto you. "That's what I took from it, anyway." He recognizes that at the end of the day it's basically all about "don't be a dick." And his mission leads him to people whose desire for the book doesn't stem from dreams of power and control, but the desire of recapturing lost human knowledge. Not to mention that their base is in godless liberal San Francisco, of all places.
So I felt like the movie was saying a few things about religion. People, leaders, like Carnegie have completely lost touch with what the bible (or any other holy text) are actually saying, and are purely after the power and control that religion can provide. But buried within the book is a simple, straightforward message that everyone, even us on this youtube can get behind - don't be a dick. And, furthermore, Malcolm McDowell and company demonstrate that the bible, along with the other holy books it's nestled between, are a part of our history and on some level are worth preserving.
So yeah that's kind of a lot of words about a movie, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it. Not to mention that first fight scene with only silhouettes, that was brilliant.
The message of the movie essentially was that the book was not responsible for the end of civilization, it's those that use the book(s) and pervert it's message to gain power. Plus the idea of controlling people by denying "books" or knowledge.
An honest reaction is all we ask for...and you deliver. Thank you.
If you are looking at rotten tomatoes, look at the audience score not whatever critics put .. This movie is 64% on RT.. 6.8 on imdb. So it's pretty solid.
Audience scores dont really matter, the original Transformers got an 85% on Rotten Tomatoes Audience scores, i remember as a kid cause it always shocked me and u cant tell me that is a good film and sometimes RT scores from critics even get it wrong like Sharknado originally got over 80% from RT critics, i mean Sharknado..Book Of Eli is a bad film, was universally hated when it got released and for good reason..If u like it, fair enough...
I just noticed...when Eli saves Solara and she hugs him, he keeps his arms apart and doesn't touch her because he can't tell if she's naked or not. On first viewing people will probably think it's because he's very standoffish, but it's more likely that it's because he knows he's stopping a rape and she could probably be naked.
I think this film is about the idea that we follow a path in our lives. For most of us it's not easy to KNOW the path we're on -- we could see it if we could see our lives "from above" and take the whole thing in, but....Eli was lucky in the sense that he clearly knew his path, so he could walk it with confidence and clarity, and have a sense of fulfillment at the end, if only because of his fidelity to his path.
I've never believed or had faith, one of my first memories is even me realizing that I am an atheist. With that said, as I get older I realize more and more how important the Bible is for just about everything. I guess that's the reason why someone would say "you're too young to get it", I certainly was at one point. I can remember a lot of times when I was young when older and wiser people would try to explain it in the best way they could. I've never heard it put this exact way but this is the way I like to try to explain it; The Bible is the perfect definition of a Chesterton's Fence.
The bible is just a work of fiction complied to control the masses and assert power.
I've been an atheist for 30 years now and I couldn't disagree more, so to hell with your condescending, you-have-to-be-this-old-and-this-wise-to-understand attitude. The bible is useful as a semi-historical reference; and that's it. Holy books are nonsense. And if you leave religion and then come back to it, then you didn't really understand why you left in the first place. There is not a single organized religion that is worth anyone's time, and it's an absolute joke that people still get conned by these institutions in the year 2023. You can have spirituality without facile dogma polluting your mind.

If you want to see great movies with Denzel, I would recommend The Pelican Brief, with Julia Roberts or Philadelphia, with Tom Hanks.
My favorite Denzel movies are American Gangster with Russell Crowe & Training Day. He plays a scary bad guy.
Here's something to ponder... Why did Eli read brail? Was he blind when he got his "calling"? Was he blind all along? I believe he was.
I've heard some people assert that he was blind through the whole movie, but I can't agree with that. His eyes simply appeared to be too functional at many points throughout for me to believe that. Others say he can simply read braille, having learned it for some unspecified reason before the War, but that doesn't sound like a very interesting story. The theory I like the best is that Eli was blind, but God gave him sight when he charged Eli with his task.

There are many subtle clues that he is blind, or at least mostly blind. He didn’t see the sign at the cannibal couple’s house. He didn’t know that all the lights were on in the room until Solara told him. He only shoots at a target once they’ve shot at him. He only takes down the guy at the bar after the guy touched him. I agree, he probably wasn’t born blind, though.
@@batbrick3949also at the beginning when he opened the door to the hanging body, the door fell scarring him, he didn’t see the body he smelled it, and had to feel the body to find the boots. And when he came across the trap at the bridge with the high jackers, he moved into the shadow to fight them because its harder for them to see him, people say how would he know he is the the shadow? Because he wouldn’t feel the heat from the sun on his face. Thought that was a nice touch when I rewatched it
Since you are considering Denzel Washington movies, I recommend the movie American Gangster which also has Russell Crowe, Josh Brolin, TI, Common, Idris Elba etc

The Hughes Brothers did a "ok" job with this movie overall & i still love it but only mainly because of the cast & its plot but this plot is like so unique & amazing & deserves soooo much better , it deserves to be like atleast a 3 hour film epic & story & told in extreme details & should be remade by atleast one of our greatest writers & directors!!!! If nobody remakes this film , i promise u that i will remake this movie into a real actual 3 hour epic because this plot is far too good to just be 90 minutes long & just throw in Denzel & Gary Oldman just to try & cover up the ok script that they wrote ❤️
