      Smart move. I also recommend having the most of the cash for your training set aside before you start. Too many people stop because the money runs out.

    I know it would be great to have an AP but you really need to save your $$ and get that oil leak fixed. As a mechanic, and pilot, I know that oil leaks aren't benign, they only get worse. Last thing you want is a major failure in flight. The engine in my Mooney J model was about 1000 hours over TBO and running strong but was leaking a lot of oil. We spent a lot of time and money trying to stop the leaks to no avail. So, in the interest of safety, and peace of mind, I replaced the engine with a factory re-man. Was it expensive?...Yes, was it worth it?...Absolutely. I now have peace of mind. Believe me, I'm not wealthy, and the cost hurt but it's well worth it.

      Thank you for the comment! I agree, the hope that an oil leak with go away is insanity. The airplane is being looked at by a mechanic in Florida right now. I won't fly it home until we see improvement (hopefully it doesn't take a new engine)

      @@MyTimeToFly Cory, you included a comment elsewhere about your internal prop hub seals. While you are waiting in FL, you might watch a UA-cam video webinar by Mike Busch about Prop Overhauls. It's about two months old. In it, he talks about an approach that he calls inspect and repair as opposed to overhaul. Worth a watch, I think.

      Theres only a few places oil should be coming out of. The oil return lines from the rocker covers have rubber boots that can get old and leak (on lycomings), the pushrode tubes where they meet the crankcase seals leake often, and if theres a small leak in the oil pan are pretty much the most common. Also the bottom of the dipstick tube sometimes otherwise it should be easy to pinpoint it

    • @MyTimeToFly
      @MyTimeToFly  2 роки тому +2

      We are pretty sure it’s originating from the prop. I found oil on the back of the prop blades.

    Bummer about the oil leak. I was wondering if you had an autopilot STC of some sort from watching prior videos. I can keep my Mooney level with the rudder if I need to but I almost always need to have a light touch on the yoke.

    Have you had the prop seal replaced? Did that solve the problem? I was with someone in a 172 on a trip to Oshkosh with that problem. That was almost 50 years ago, and I can still see all those tiny golden beads on the windshield. It won't get better on its own.
    In a Tri-Pacer, it can drip down and pool on the exhaust manifold. If it does, during the next takeoff, it smokes and wafts into the cockpit. You don't know excitement until you think you have a fire!

    • @MyTimeToFly
      @MyTimeToFly  2 роки тому

      We have had the prop seal relaced, and the crank seal. Ironically the problem didn't really exist until after both of those seals were replaced the first time. I don't claim to be an expert in propellers, but it seems like it might be a seal issue internal to the prop rather than the seal between the prop and the crank.

      1/2 quart in 3.5 hours of flying. Of course this includes normal usage…plus the leak.

      It’s really not that much oil, it just creates a fine mist that inhibited visibility more than I expected. After my long leg, I chose to fly smaller legs to reduce the buildup. It will get fixed!
