  • What happened in Serbia during World War One? During the First World War, Serbia played a significant role in the conflict as one of the primary battlegrounds in the Balkans. The war started in Serbia on July 28, 1914, when Austro-Hungarian forces launched an invasion after blaming Serbia for the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Serbia resisted the invasion but was initially overwhelmed by the superior firepower of the Austro-Hungarian forces. As the Austro-Hungarian forces advanced, Serbia's army conducted a strategic retreat through the country's rugged terrain, employing guerrilla warfare tactics to harass and slow down the enemy. This resistance allowed the Serbian Army to regroup and strengthen their positions. As the Central Powers (Austro-Hungary, Germany, and later Bulgaria) continued their offensive against Serbia, the Allies, particularly France and Britain, provided support to Serbia. The Serbian army received supplies, reinforcements, and military advisors. This assistance helped stabilize the Serbian front and counter the enemy's advance. In August 1914, the Serbian Army achieved a significant victory against the Austro-Hungarian forces in the Battle of Cer. They successfully repelled the invaders and inflicted heavy casualties. In November 1914, the Serbs launched a counteroffensive known as the Battle of Kolubara, driving the Austro-Hungarian forces out of Serbia. In September 1915, Bulgaria joined the Central Powers and launched an invasion of Serbia from the east. This new front and the overwhelming enemy forces posed a severe threat to Serbia. Despite putting up fierce resistance, the Serbian Army was eventually pushed back, and the capital city of Belgrade fell in October 1915. Following the fall of Belgrade, the Serbian government and army went into exile, retreating through the mountains of Albania in harsh winter conditions. Many soldiers and civilians perished during this arduous journey. The surviving Serbian troops regrouped in Greece, where they received support and aid from the Allies. In 1916, a multinational force composed of Serbian, French, British, and Greek troops was assembled on the Salonika Front in northern Greece. They launched a campaign to liberate Serbia from the Central Powers. After several offensives and battles, the Serbian Army reentered their homeland in September 1918, freeing Serbia from occupation.
The First World War had a significant impact on Serbia, resulting in substantial casualties, widespread destruction, and population displacement. It also contributed to the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires and played a role in shaping the geopolitical landscape of the Balkans.

Just to know, it would be nice if you can put in video, but now,...
Serbian secret service inform Serbian ministre in AustroHungary and sad to him that he must inform AusHun goverment about something is happening and that there will be attempt of assassination, Serbian minstre sad that to AusHun goverment, but they did nothing, they wanted this,...as i heard, they didnt love Franc, so they let it happend,...
      Interesting, a?
And they didnt love Serbia, so they just wanted to attack, they would attack earlier, but Germany sad them not yet, cos Germany wasnt ready for war yet,...and in that time, even Russia goverment, didnt hate us, but didnt like the fact that we were growing stronger and they have family ties (AusHun, Rus, UK) so its normal they will love AusHun more than Serbia.
Plus, Serbia start to work with France, buying weapons from France, AusHun found out about this and they wanted to attack us,...that AusHun ultimatum was written several times, the guy who wrote it was waking up thru night and he put every imposible thing in it, just to make sure Serbia dont accept it (Serbia accept all, just one thing wasnt accepted) cos they wanted war.
Even army of AusHun 3 times took their weapon and wanted to go vs Serbia, but Germany sad NO, not yet,...
And when AusHun got green light, they attacked Serbia,...and what kind of evil killing and torture they did in Serbia is 👎

    Two facts:
After conquering Serbia Germans built an monument in Belgrade on which it is (still today) written: Hier ruhen Serbische helden (here are laying in rest Serbian heroes). A rare monument in the world risen to enemy soldiers.
Near Corfu is inslet called Vido. On it there is a mausoleum to Serbian soldiers who died en masse on Corfu exausted and ill from Albania crossing. Dead soldiers were burried into sea, the Blue tomb as we call it in Serbia.
Thanks Stephan for this short but very accurate presentation. All the best.

As a Serb, All my great grandfathers fought in this war. Two of them left Austro-Hungary to join the Serbian forces, one of them returned from USA too join the Thesaloniki front. One was immobilized directly from Serbia.
They say that the Serbain infantry was moving faster then French cavalry during the breaking through the Thesaloniki front.
You should also hear the song called "Tamo daleko", sung by Serbs on the Corfu, about how they miss their homeland.
Also, one of the reasons the Greeks love us, especially in Corfu, is because we spent some time with them there, healing.
The dead who died on the Corfu were released in the sea, which got the name the Blue Cemetery.

Great video. :) I can add that the first shot was fired from the ship called SMS Bodrog on 29 July 1914. After WWI, the ship was renamed Monitor Sava and became part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia fleet. During WWII, the ship was once again used, this time by the Independent State of Croatia, laying mines on the Danube. After WWII, it was in use in the Yugoslav navy until the 60s, but was later neglected and left to decay. In recent years, the ship was fully restored and is now moored on the Sava near the Branko's bridge in the center Belgrade as a floating museum.
    Cheers from Serbia. :)

Given the fact that almost 98% were mobilized in Northern Serbia you will get picture clear.
Southern Serbia was not mobilized cuz of many reasons but mostly there was no really any preperations for that so only two regiments were mobilised symbolically.

When I moved to country side from our capitol, I visited local church that's from 17th century if I remember correctly. Inside there are bronze or iron plaques with names of local people who lost their lives while fighting in WW1. I started counting, and after realizing that there is multiple plaques with total of over 200 names I was shocked. Why shocked? Because my and local villages don't have that number of people today :O That war decimated our population so much that it's genuinely felt till this day. Two of my grandfathers walked across Albania to Corfu, and both managed to come back victorious. Third grandfather died in Zagreb literally 5 minutes before peace was signed. My grandmother told me how they gave some land to one neighbor to go with bulls to Zagreb and retrieve his body. Imagine how crazy those times were.

i'm a serb and this is a pretty accurate video, with a lack of details, but a good one.
one of my mother's great grandfathers was killed at the battle of cer, the other survived the war as a colonel. from father side, he is a serb from herzegovina, one great grandfather was killed at the battle of kajmakcalan and the other one was mobilized, as many other serbs from bosnia and herzegovina, by austro-hungarian empire and sent in a war with russians somewhere in besarabia (as i remeber). the entire unit deserted and joined the russian army. initially they were in a russian prison camp until they were checked and later armed and added to the russian army. when the october revolution began they were in imperial uniforms, so they fought against the revolutionaries and over time were pushed further and further to the east and somewhere before manchuria, surrounded on three sides, they moved to china. returning home to herzegovina lasted six years and from the entire area where my family is from, only two survived, my great-grandfather and his neighbor from the village. the great-grandfather died after a few years as a result of his wounds and the exausting journey back, and his neighbor mirko lived so long that I also managed to remember him and his stories about their returning home.
serbs also liberated today's countries macedonia, montenegro, bosnia and herzegovina, croatia and slovenia. slovenia was liberated by former serbian prisoners of war and inmates released from austro-hungarian concentration camps, what possibly could be an interesting topic for you for a future video.
    cheers!

My great-grandfather was first in the Balkan wars in 1912 and 1913, and then in the First World War from 1914 to 1918, he returned home via the Albanian mountains, the island of Vido (where the weakest and sickest warriors were sent to die), he recovered and fought on the Thessaloniki front with the Serbian army and Allies. He returned home after 6 years of war and had 4 children with my great grandmother, one of children was my grandfather.
Glory and praise to you Miladin Jovanovic. He never regretted his life and died at the age of 78.

He wasn't killed but he was not the same when he got back and killed himself about a year later. All very tragic. Such a tragedy what happened to the Serbs of course but it affected my wife's father who was only 10 at the time. Later president of Yugoslavia, "the largest son of our nations and nationalities" Josip broz TITO was the corporal in the "devils division" in austro-hungarian army. There is a photo from ww1 of him in blue AU uniform.
I strongly recommend to watch clips about "Battle on mountain Cer" and "Kolubara Battle" ("Cerska bitka" i "Kolubarska bitka") as those 2 were first ally victories in ww1. AustroHungarian military leaders thought its gonna be walk in the park as Serbia waged wars in 1912 (1st Balkan war) and in 1913 (2nd balkan war) and was quite exhausted... The facts about Serbian victories and our overall contribution to victory in WW1 (Serbia lost one third of overall population and 50% of male population back than) is constantly beeing avoided or simply not mentioned. I guess, those amazing victories over the MUCH stronger aggressor (Serbia had about 3million ppl and Austro-Hungary 52mils in 1914) didnt fit into "bad guys are serbs - narrative" at the end of 20th century, AND Serbia is still constantly beeing molested by western (super)powers. 15% (Kosovo and Metohija) of our territory is forcibly taken after 1999 nato bombing, and given to biggest human/organ and narcotrafficers in the world - Kosovo albanians (shqipetare). We, the Serbian people, still hope that some other, better and more honest men will come to rule those countries, who will see and correct the enormous injustice that their countries inflicted on the Serbian people (who was always on the right side of history), as well as the consequences of that of violent seizure of territory (Russians literally used "Kosovo-example" to justify their actions in Ukraine, ALTHOUGH I would not wanna take sides in that war, until time /history shows us the truth of who was to blame for that conflict) as well as possible conflicts and secessions in many other places on Earth. Also, such violent act destroyed the rule of international law and now only law that is applied worldwide is "might makes wright".

"With full and unshakable faith and hope in God, forward Heroes, to the FATHERLAND."
The army made the sign of the cross and went on a terrible charge chasing the enemy. Although it seems like a myth, there are supposedly reports that the French cavalry were unable to catch up with the Serbian infantry as eager as the Serbs were to return to their homes in their fatherland.

Thank you for making this video, Serbia is too often overlooked when WWI is in question, and the heroism of our forefathers as well, even though during WWI even our enemies were
so impressed by the valor of Serbian soldiers that FieldMarshal Mackensen erected a small monument dedicated to them. In a video short like this one, you can't really go in too much
depth so it's OK overall, but concerning your video about Vardar's offensive, I must protest. Serbian army broke through the front, and they did it alone, The British were opposed to that idea,
and the French agreed when the Serbs said they would go alone and that the French could follow 3 days behind. Serbs liberated 600km of territory in about 2 months, defeating Bulgarians and
Germans along the way. Which led to the Bulgarian surrender, and consequently to the German surrender as well. German Kaiser wrote a telegram to his Bulgarian counterpart: "It is a disgrace 62000 Serbs had won the war" acknowledging that fact.

1:15 A little context is needed here. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the relations between Serbia and Serbs in general towards Austria were very positive. Relations were friendly, many Serbs went to school in Vienna and Budapest, Austria (and Russia) rewarded the resettlement of Serbs to places that had previously been ravaged by wars or looting (hence the Serbs in the "Serbification" of Croatia, Dalmatia, Slavonia) and supported to a greater extent, uprisings. One of them that was initially supported and encouraged was the uprising of the Serbs in Bosnia in 1875, which was supported by Serbia and Montenegro itself (with the help of Russia) by attacking Turkey.
Now the key part: Austria played dirty by ignoring the insurgents, waiting for them to bleed to death. Because they had a plan from the beginning that they would take Bosnia, and then the fewer insurgents left - the fewer problems tomorrow. And they will weaken the Turks so that when I attack they have no chance. She sat on the sidelines and waited for as many Turks and Serbian insurgents as possible to perish fighting among themselves and then she entered with her big army with the words "this is mine now!". There, the Serbs saw what Austria thinks and how it views them, and that was the moment when our relations turned upside down. If you want to enslave us - we will tear your country apart.
1:46 The big problem was that Austria was doing everything to expand its influence in the Balkans, always insisting on peace agreements that they installed their German princes as kings at the heads of: Bulgaria, Albania and Greece. That is why those countries were neutral at the beginning of the war, and they were also in a war stance with the Bulgarians. Greece barely entered the war, and Albania, even under the administration of Serbia, was still divided into various factions that mostly supported the Turkish policy, and therefore the Austrians in this war.

You mentioned the direct cause how WW1 started but what is the direct cause how it ended? It's the victory of the Serbian army against Bulgarians. It happened as a storm so much that suprised Bulgarians shouted "run away, the dead have returned!" (they though Serbian army was not existing any more). Since Bulgarians could not hold its part of front any more, and Serbs wanted to liberate Serbian land (they came all the way to parts of Slovenia), Austro-Hungary could not stop them (and the French army that travelled along with Serbs). And with Austro-Hungary down, Germans could not rely on them any more and decided to end their participation in War.
To sum up the end of WW1: Germans and their allies LOST, English and their allies retained an ARMISTICE while Serbs WON.

Serb here. Video is nice but it omits an important detail. WWI ended because Serbian Army entered modern day territory of Austria and was on its way of taking over Vienna. That is the reason why German Emperor Wilhelm II decided to capitulate. Both German Field Marshals Paul Von Hindenburg and Erich Ludendorff wrote separate memos that point out that the reason for the capitulation of Central Powers was the collapse of Salonika Front and subsequent rapid Serbian advancements. It is no wonder why you haven't mentioned it because Western historians tend to avoid that fact.

Not bad @HistoryHustle! Just a few things...
It is important to say that at that time, in Bosnia (annexed - occupied by Austro-Hungarien Empire), Serbs were the major ethnic group (now they are the 2nd). Maybe there lies the answer to why Westerners reduce numbers of Serbs who lost lives in WWI.
Population and casualties lists are not hard to find today and many of them are done by others, not Serbs, so it is easy to determine Serbian casualties. The hard truth is: During WWI, Kingdom of Serbia (Bosnia, Montenegro, Vojvodina etc. not included) lost 1/4 - one quoter of its population and almost every 2nd man lost life. Austro-Hungarian army used ammunition later forbidden internationally because of brutality. So after the war, Serbia was filled with crippled men bagging on the streets. Also, when they occupied the country and chopped it to pieces (like vultures) they killed thousands of civilians, many massacred, raped, hanged etc. Serbia is the way most devastated country (in population) during the WWI and the way most forgotten after the war after all that she gave and lost. (Without breaking through on the Balkan front by "resurrected Serbs" and all others, maybe there will be no WWI end that soon.)
The Ammo that came to Serbian army from France and Greece was useless because it didn't fit with Serbian heavy guns so Serbs had to take it to ammo factories to be adjusted and then send back to the front. Also, lack of ammo was the main reason why Serbian King, government, armies, civilians etc. decided to leave the country after they were backstabbed by Bulgarians and attacked from 3 sides by 3 countries.
Very much important and missed to mention is that it was Montenegrian army who was defending Serbian retreat over Albania. Back then, Serbia and Montenegro, divided by leftovers of Ottomans, were one people one nation fighting for unification (no jokes of countries that we have today)...
Also, Serbian King Peter thinking was of true leader, he anticipated that the country might be caught in a bad situation so it has to retreat south long before that actually happened. So he signed an agreement with one of the Albanian leaders who accepted to protect and take care of Serbs who would be retreating over Albania. Which he fulfilled during the retreat. In return, Serbia would provide him support to get on power. This is just one positive example where Serbs and Albanians were able to be friends and allies. Unfortunately, Albanians who weren't under his command attacked and robbed dying Serbs.
Other facts... Serbs had the youngest soldier ever - Momčilo Gavrić join the army at the age of 9 if I am not mistaken after Austro-Hungarians killed whole his family. He got the uniform and the rank like a true soldier. Raised in and by the army, he spent all the time on the front including the Albanian golgotha (the retreat over Albania) ... Milunka Savić - the most decorated female soldier ever, wounded a few times, joined the army as a man instead of her younger brother, when it was discovered that she is a woman (during tending one of her wounds) she refused to join medical staff and insisted to be sent back to the front, she alone captured dozen of enemy soldiers and was always the first who'd march forward... Old King Peter joined the common soldiers in the trenches once to burst the moral and was with the army during the whole retreat. (Imagine something like that happening in the famous British army back then!)
@HistoryHustle Only one more thing. PLEASEEEE remove that man from the cover of the video. That's not Serbian soldier.

@@HistoryHustle One more fact for you I missed to share... You know which colors were the uniforms in WWI? For example Austrohungarian soldiers had dark blue uniforms. I am sure we're all familiar with British uniforms - they were red etc. Armies up to the end of the WWI used very vivid colors without being worried their soldiers can be spotted from the Moon. Serbian army was the first one who saw the need for camouflage and started using green uniforms even before WWI to make their soldiers less visible to the enemy.

    • @Salvaeusall
      @Salvaeusall 3 місяці тому

Bravo , this is indeed a greatest short insite of the Serbs in WWI. As I said , allies' help was payed in gold and it was mostly useless. Even Korfu was payed in advance. The allies with their ships helped only after king Peter urged Russia to put a pressure. And genocide put under the rug. Not to mention the Austrian army would leave their tiphus soldiers and we took care of them. That led to further Serbian deaths , it was a sort of biological war included. Austro-Hungarians replaced muslims from Bosnia into Sandžak to create a vacuum between Serbs and Montenegreans.

Great video. Would have been nice to include why Serbs specifically reacted the way they did on the annexation. Many of the reasons being: Complete ban of Serbian schools, language, cultural gatherings etc. Serbs were horribly treated and there were numerous instances of massacres and forcible conversions to Catholicism.
Also important to note that an attack on the occupant isn't a terrorist attack as terrorist terrorize civilians, not dictators. Gavrilo came from a poor family and has experienced many of the things abovementioned. Many historians agree that the ultimatum given to Serbia was pure insanity as no serious country would ever accept all of the points which were in all honesty occupation in disguise. It was more of a surrender note which we declined.

1,2 milion Serbs died in WWI,out of that number 1/3 were civilians and 58% male population
During 1914 according to estimates, there were 4.6 million people within Serbia, of which approximately 2.9 million lived in Northern Serbia(modern Central Serbia) and 1.7 million in Southern Serbia (North Macedonia and Kosovo).
Given the fact that almost 98% were mobilized in Northern Serbia you will get picture clear.
Southern Serbia was not mobilized cuz of many reasons but mostly there was no really any preperations for that so only two regiments were mobilised symbolically.
Only after fall of Serbia Bulgarinas mobilized some of their own regiments by force there.
