Northward is a hard rock duo composed of Dutch vocalist Floor Jansen of Nightwish and Norwegian guitarist Jørn Viggo Lofstad of Pagan's Mind.[1] The two created the project in 2007, writing an entire album worth of music in 2008 but being unable to record it due to label issues and their busy schedules; they ultimately reunited in 2017 to finally record the album, which was released on October 19, 2018 by Nuclear Blast.[2]
Floor doing Floor things. This song should be on every radio! So badass. Floor is just our Valkyrie Queen of Rock, Metal, Pop, and anything she decides to have fun singing! You MUST also check out her collab with Evergrey and their song In Orbit. So good.
Eric “The Wyldeside” Clarke mentioned that it is a shame this song can not be heard on radio stations in the US… I can only see that as the biggest compliment😅
When your name is Ville Lipiäinen, the director of many Nightwish performances like Wacken 2013 and Floor asking you to make a video for her project Northward❤
I love this album. Conceived in 2007/8 but, due to both contractural, personal and other band stuff, not recorded until Floor and Jørn Viggo Lofstad found a break in their schedules in 2017, and released in 2018. Lots of excellent and varied songs on the album, but it demonstrates Floor and Jørn's affinity for hard rock bands like Skunk Anansie (Floor is a great admirer of SA's lead singer, Skin). Jørn Viggo Lofstad of Pagan Mind is, as demonstrated here, an excellent guitarist. It would be great if Floor brought some of elements from this project into her next solo album.
Studio only project with just 1 album. Floor and guitarist Jorn Viggo Lofstad don't have the time to tour for this with their own bands taking priority. Jorn is from Pagan's Mind. His lead singer is Nils K. Rue, whom you saw in Ayreon's The Day That The World breaks Down.
Finally! About bloody time. ;) Told you that you would like it. A radio pro with a reaction channel did a reaction to this song and was actually pissed off that he hadn't heard it before. He would've loved to have had this song to play in his rotation. He claimed it would've been a big hit on American rock radio and I don't doubt it. Some other good ones from the album: "Big Boy" (audio only) - a classic raunchy rock song where she turns the tables from being a boy toy to having a toy boy. This stanza says it all: "So here's my body, and here's my big smile So much for talents, this makes me worthwhile It's too bad I also got brains Play you like a toy now big boy" Then there's the more mellow "Storm in a Glass" live at AFAS with the Marcel Fisser band: ua-cam.com/video/7ax5nSPB9t8/v-deo.html If you want more Irene, the sisters duet in "Drifting Islands" (audio only). Then we have the soft ballad "Bridal Passion" ua-cam.com/video/0qFqwFeiu-k/v-deo.html also live at AFAS.
Jörn Viggo Lofstad is the guitar player for Norwegian Prog Metal band Pagan’s Mind. There are a number of performances by PM on YT, amazing musicians. Drummer and keyboardist are also performing on Northward BTW Jörn is playing a Gibson guitar here (Les Paul?) but on stage it is a Van Halen
No matter what she sings no matter how she's dressed, she always looks(and feels) like an angel coming down to earth from the sky. You can feel that you are in the presence of something "bigger". She's one in a billion. Btw, you may please search and check out her song " Million ", it's a metal song with operatic vocals. The most fascinating is that she's singing it live somewhere in the Netherlands, accompanied by a big jazz band. And please🙏 check out her live version of Gaga's " Bad romance "with Revamp, she will definitely blow you away.
The Northward Album is actually one of my favorite albums - I am so old that I have old school hard rock running in my vains. This song about the harsh break-up between Floor and her former boyfriend - is dripping with hard feelings from every sound in the song. Floor is also one hell of a songwriter and composer. This album also has a duet with Irene / Floor (Drifting Islands) - but everything on it are pure gold and honey for the ears, mind and soul. Great reaction from you. And don't forget to look up some of the mind blowing duets with Floor and Russell Allen!!!! - (Phantom of the Opera or Sweet Curse!!)
That's what Floor's fans love - her great diversity. No matter what mood you're in, you can bet your butt that Floor delivers exactly the right song. By the way, Emppu keeps saying - a song must have at least two or three guitar solos. More NORTHWARD? What are you waiting for?
You missed the high-five at the end of the video! Not many videos to go with the album although during her live show, Floor performs Storm in a Glass: ua-cam.com/video/7ax5nSPB9t8/v-deo.htmlsi=vZssooFLEcDCq-NX and Bridle Passion: ua-cam.com/video/0qFqwFeiu-k/v-deo.htmlsi=Kz16QTA8uPU80pZh (both very different from this).
You are so correct Daniel. The guitar solo has become a thing of the past since a couple decade back. You still hear them, but only occasionally in contemporary rock music.
Northward was Floor’s hardrock project with Jorn Viggo Lofstad from Norwegian metal band Pagans Mind. They did meet at Prog Power USA in 2007. Northward is a studio side project and not a proper band.
It is quite different from what we are used to from Floor. Still, it sounds fresh and the winner of the Buma ROCKS~ Export Award 🏆 proves that she is an all-rounder, because whether it rocks à la Foo Fighters (While Love Died) or melodic pop rock is....🖤🤘🖤

If You want more of her singing other than Nightwish and her own stuff, check out Evergray (Swedish metal band) featuring Floor on this: ua-cam.com/video/XKNg2dcO94k/v-deo.html Here's another Northward song - Storm In A Glass: ua-cam.com/video/zHIodbDG7Zc/v-deo.htmlsi=1XqpFNo7INhbLQGt
I would classify this as "hard rock," and yes, I would agree with you that it's more radio friendly than her bands, including Nightwish. They would probably edit out the guitar solo for a single. Pretty cool video too.
You still have an absolute ton of Floor solos to explore as well. There's also a couple of fan shot videos on youtube of Tarja and Floor on stage together singing Over The Hills And Far Away. And just so you don't think that there is another rabbit hole that we haven't yet told you about, (everyone is possibly waiting till Xmas) Finland are so in to rock music, every year they hold a festival called Raskasta Joulua (which means Heavy Christmas). There are several videos out there of Floor and Marko performing Ave Maria.
Try listening to drifting islands by northward and see if you can tell the difference between floor and irene who both do lead vocals on the song because apparently their parents couldn't

Jørn Viggo Lofstad is an excellent guitarist. His band Pagan's Mind is prog metal. They haven't released a new album since 2011 due to health issues with some of the band members and internal strife within the band. The lead singer Nils K. Rue is also amazing and was shown briefly in the Ayreon "The Day That The World Breaks Down" video. They have been working on a new album and Nils just stated in August 2023 that the new album is coming, but it may possibly be their last one. Saw them live at ProgPower USA IV in 2003 and they put on a great show. Here's a video from their last album, ua-cam.com/video/TVolpFbQ4Es/v-deo.htmlsi=zLdL7QDxrQ7Y6zze
Pagans mind is back together. They are in studio as we speak recording a new album. 2 weeks ago the confirmed they will be back at prog power 2024. BTW. They released a live album in 2015 called full circle.
Jees, another great song....you really picked some good ones. Love the Hard rock style of this song🤗 Yeah it is easy on the ear but most people still would find it too hard. He is an amazing guitarist! Played with Arjan Lucassen (Areyon) a lot, like the songer of Evergrey.
Why, o why is this not on mainstream radio????? Are those radio people sleeping????? This is a fantastic rock song that should be on regular airplay. Not very recent, but what the hack????
