I really dig Floor singing Rock and Metal. That side of her is so underrated. Flicking that switch, on a Gibson Les Paul, switches between the pickups (bridge, both, neck). Because their positions are different, they sound different. He is playing with that effect.
She could certainly burn you down with her eyes. There's a reason she's called the Goddess. You're absolutely right - there's nothing this woman can't do. She is, without a doubt, the most versatile female voice on the planet. The "up and down" thing he was doing is switching the pickup switch.
Our versatile Floor ..... love to see her also gigs like in the Swedish band *SOILWORK* with *_"Let This River Flow"_* (live in Helsinki): ua-cam.com/video/-yXB7CB6DmU/v-deo.html And singing with her sister Irene in Ayreon's *_"The Eye of Ra"_* : ua-cam.com/video/odcO0SciTUY/v-deo.html
Nerd Corner:- The guitarist, during his solo was using a Digitech 'Whammy' pedal that is essentially a pitch shifter, creating a portamento effect of a note sliding up or down to another note as the pedal is rocked forward and backward by his foot. The staccato effect is him essentially using the guitar pickup selector switch as a 'kill switch' which makes the guitar sound go off and on as the switch is rocked upwards and downwards, in this case in quick succession, creating the staccato effect.
I dont know if you watched the virtual shows but She is better than ever ....as good as the band was ....She stole the damn shows ....Her voice , presence , looks , outfits and the energy she brought headbanging , windmilling , sass , dancing , and the hand and arm gestures , etc . Tuomas should thank his lucky stars that he got her ....she's a force of nature
I wouldn't say she stole the shows - she did what she is the only person on Earth are able to do - after 2,5 years locked out from the stage, she proved (once again) why she is the greatest lead singer in the galaxy - she lifted the band up through the skies!!! - and without any help from an audience to support her. She is the most powerful one-woman Army ever existed. And 2 nights in a row!!!!!
@@kimfabritiusdetengnagel2038 exactly ....no slight to the band they are amazing BUT she is otherworldly, you cannot keep your eyes off her .....shes out there giving everything she has , even her bandmates get caught up looking at her in amazement .

The foot pedal is a Digitech Whammy. It can either be used as a harmonizer (creates a second note so it sounds like 2 guitars) or changes the pitch of the original note either up, or down by one or two octaves (depending on the setting). As you push down on the pedal, it slides from the original note to the octave(s) above or below. He had it set to one octave above. The other thing he did was with the pickup toggle switch. On Les Paul style guitars, you can set the volume individually on the neck and bridge pickups. So he set the neck one to zero and the bridge one to full. That way, if he selects the neck pickup, there is no sound. By rapidly flicking between the two rhythmically, you can get a staccato effect. Lenny Kravitz does something similar at the very end of Are You Gonna Go My Way, for example.
The album is really good. As you will discover when looking at her pre-Nightwish stuff, she writes some great songs and collaborates with the best talents on the European metal scene. Most of the album, written years before they finally got a chance to record it, is high (and mid) tempo heavy rock, with the exception of the beautiful Ballad, Bridle Passion. Lofstad is a terrific guitarist: it's a great combination.
O Boy . Northward has a ton of awesome music on it . And like a ReVamp and After Forever they all are in my Floor Collection !!!! Love that lady!!! NWSU
Glad you got to this. The more you listen to it, the more you will like it. Jorn Viggo Lofstad is an exceptional guitarist. As I said in other comments, Floor wrote this in 2007 as a way to break into radio play for more exposure, but didn't get in the studio to record it for 10 years. We might not have 9 years of Floor with Nightwish if this had happened back then. Now we have both. Mysteries of the Universe!!
Jørn and Floor met during a festival in 2007 while she still was fronting Forever After. Had a good time backstage and shared their love for pure rock, and promised to get back together. Well... it took 10 years, burn-out and Nightwish.
Yeah it’s a different sound for Jørn also his band Pagan’s Mind is a progressive metal band. They got together to make a hard rock album and they both stayed so busy with their bands it basically took ten years to finally record it. Well worth the wait ! I’m pretty sure they met each other while contributing to Aryeon but someone can correct me if I’m wrong...
It was an old school hard rock project Jørn and Floor started in 2008. They wrote the songs and the music, recorded the drums - and had to put the project on hold for a decade, due to circumstances. When Nightwish took a year off and Floor had given birth to Freja - she contacted Jørn again. They looked over the songs, and then recorded singing and guitar in 2018, and released the Northward album. It's a great happy good old school sweaty hard rock album - just makes you happy and wants to dance and sing along - nothing fancing or deep. I love it. 👍 🤘 🤘
The Guitarist, Jørn Viggo Lofstad, is switching the pickup selector toggle on his Les Paul, which gives that rapid tonal-shift sound. Normally, it's just used to switch between neck, both pickups, and the bridge pickups for the different tonalities provided.
You should check Evergrey feat Floor, In orbit. Another side of Floors vocals. Thats an awsome song, and her husbond Hannes was the drummer in this band before he joined Sabaton. Evergrey are swedish progressive metal band from Gothenburg and has some damn good songs. Eternal nocturnal, where august mourns, kings of errors are worth checking out. Lots of layers in their music, awsome sound and vocals from Tom just nailing it.
Drifting Islands - Floor and Irene!! Or From her After Forever days: "The evil that men do" - her cover of that Iron Maiden song is the young wild Floor on full throttle. She also did Final Countdown - a cover of the Europe song - she really gets the crowd pumped here. I have experienced both from her younger days - her power and stage performance already then, was breath taking.
Not the usual Floor, but for me every track on this album has a detail that I really like. Support of the artists, this is one of the albums that I have as CD and LP.
Comment fron the uk. Floor is a true rocker a metalhead through and through. That look in her eyes, the one that takes your soul in every song she brings to life, every movement she makes . A natural born entertainer you either have it or not, well Floors got the lot, as Marko said before last ride of the day at wacken yeah baby i agree.
It is too bad Northward kind of fell in the cracks of After Forever breaking up and then the creation of ReVamp. Took 8 years to complete but it is a pretty rockin' album.
Jørn Viggo Lofstad was also in Jørn Lande's band for 3 or 4 albums. Jørn - The Duke, is a banger of an album. Very Whitesnake-sounding, with Lofstad on guitar.
She is like chameleon. She can morf her voice to fit in every way she wants. Just think how much she had to practice to be so good in every song area. 1000hrs won't even be closely enough.
Yeah Floor just makes everything amazing. Doesn’t matter the band or side project or solo stuff... she jus brings everything to the next level . It’s no wonder why Tuomas wanted her in Nightwish .. Nightwish has always been at the top of the symphonic metal world ... but there was a band called After Forever that could actually challenge them .. and that’s because they had a similar sound , maybe a bit heavier .. and they had Floor. I’m sure Tuomas was aware of how good she was back then. Well as fate would have it After Forever broke up and their guitarist Mark Jensen formed Epica and Floor formed Revamp. Had Floor been available when Tarjia was fired I bet Tuomas would have picked her for the replacement back then. But timing is everything and eventually Tuomas was able to land the best female vocalist in our era. But if you watch the After Forever videos you can clearly see that Floor had the special talent even in her early 20’s. You need to check out the MV for After Forever ..Energize Me. It showcases a catchy song and it shows the star quality of a young Floor. It’s one of those songs that is always gonna get cranked when it pops up on my playlist. 🤟🏻
Floor doing Floor things...is there something she can not do ? Rumors are she is bad ad making tacos.....This one is cool. And we have to give credit to her partner in Crime....precise guitar work.....really nice ! All hail the Queen !

Video director Ville Lipiäinen directs most of Nightwish live videos. Great to hear Floor Jansen singing real rock 'n'roll.
Literally can do anything. From growling to this to opera. Amazing.
In an interview she got the question what she couldn't do. Her answer: 'maybe French Rap'.
