As a pre-teen I was hiking in woods acroos the lake from where we lived in Connectticut. Walking slowly along a stone wall a Bobcat suddenly appeared on it after jumping up from the other side. He probably heard me and thought I might have been prey. We both stood still, checked each othet out, and after maybe 5 seconds in went back from where it came. That was maybe 60 years ago, and I still remember those 5 seconds very well!

I grew up in rural Virginia. One night when I was about 12 I woke up and saw a man standing in our driveway. It had snowed so all I could see was his dark outline against the white snow.
I got scared and woke my mom up. When she looked he was gone. She thought I imagined it.
Then next day a man came to the house and told us he had been outside our house the night before. He said his dogs had gotten loose and ran away. They had been chasing something. We started looking and we found some cat prints bigger than a dinner plate. I guess a mountain lion had been through our area and the dogs were after it. He had finally caught them but he never saw the cat.
I heard a mountain lion scream one night. I’ll never forget that sound.

I was hunting with my Dad at age 9 when I heard my first Bobcat scream. My Vietnam vet father looked at me while we were moving up wind. I clicked the safety off of my .223 rifle and he told me to safety it and we stopped, he laughed real big and the bobcat screamed again. It was about 50 yards away and I remember my hair literally standing on end under my hat.😂😂🤣

I thought the same thing. I don't mind hiking in the dark with my headlamp for an hour or so when I miscalculated my hike time a bit. But hiking out for hours and hours in the dark walking on icy ground (and he didn't even have microspikes) doesn't sound like a lot of fun. He mentionned he knew a shorter way out but in the dark like that I wouldn't be surprised if he was forced to hike out the long way around following the same trail he came in.

When you said "you take one step forward, half a step back" it must be doubly so for you recording the adventure. Setting the camera, going back to record yourself walking toward it. Flipping it and walking away from it. And then going back again to get the camera. I imagine doing all that probably at least doubles the time of your hikes. Really appreciate all the work you put into the adventures for us.

He dug in about 8 areas within a few feet of my tent . Interesting encounter for sure .

Most likely becase the trees were bare of leaves, i could not”see’ the wind you were describing. it was not until yo set up the tarp, that the full force of it was visible Yikes, you were under full sail!! When it. got dark so suddenly, I could not imagine how you planned to. sleep out there in that gale. . i kept waiting for the Bobcat to walk up to your camp and beg for diinner. lol. I almost did not watch , because the beginning of your hike was through that windswept stretch of barren landscape. that brought to mind a JRR Tolkien poem: “when winter first begins to bite, and stones crack in the frosty night, when pools are black and trees are bare,,,’tis evil in the wild to fare” However, the title read “Followed by a Bobcat.” and i am glad i stayed to enjoy the adventure. i wish we knew why the Bobcat followed you. That forest in winter just “felt” so sad and old and tired. i have seen places that have lost thier sense of mystery and wildness, due to too many people using the area for too many years But you said not many folks visit that area.. Your camera caught something, a Spirit. of watchful awareness of being observed and disturbed.. The camera often sees things the human eye cannot.. i could see it,, with my “spidey senses” The forest was aware of you passing through. Maybe the Bobcat decided you were not easy prey and gave up the chase.?, i very much enjoyed the adventure after i made hot coffee and put on a jacket and wrapped a blanket around my legs and feet. , so i could stay warm, that wind was cold.❤

I appreciate channels like yours that don't promote fear and, all of a sudden feel like I'm watching a commercial. UA-cam has gotten really bad with this sort of thing. Or maybe it's the UA-camrs, but I skip over the sections where they promote a product. It's fine to mention it and like you do,and give an honest review with reasons why you like or dislike it. I can formulate my own opinion on why I might like the product because I've got a lot of experience in the woods and camping. I'll know if the product will work for me or not. As for that sound, I have heard and seen what that was when I was little and played in the woods around my home. I saw one one time and slowly, quietly, made my way back down the hill towards my home.a

Was solo car camping at Wallowa State Park 20 years ago in the fall. Was at the top of a loop, on a trail towards the lake. Deer casually walked by. Elk. Raccoons. I mean casually. And then this cute little cat with a bobtail walked by. All of them walking like they were shopping in a grocery store. It was hunting season, and the park was a safety zone. At 10pm sitting by the fire, neighbor's dog went crazy. They shone a light right behind the picnic table I was sitting at. There were at least 20 huge elk with racks standing waiting their turn to walk by. I slept with a light on in my small tent so they wouldn't trip over the tent, lol!

Thank you for this video. Very nice hike in uncommon conditions. I agree that hiking in less-than-perfect weather does reduce the number of of people you are likely to see, and that is a good thing.

Those sounds remind me a lot of the sounds the squirrels make in my neighborhood on many an afternoon. I've never heard them make that sound after dark however. Some days they seem to get into a shouting match with the large crow population who can make similar sounding calls but distinct in their own way. ... Also on another note, it sounds like you did well on that vehicle purchase situation. I suspect you struggle to make decisions at times, or to know that you've made the right call all the time, so taking that situation as a sign probably works out for the best. Don't be shy of asking for the opinions of others that you trust, and consider them well in such matters. We all have strengths and weaknesses and that's ok. I appreciate what you do, and especially look forward to seeing this camp area again in the future!

Mad respect for you not giving in to these companies who want to pay someone to make their product look good. Like you said, there’s very very few streamers who do this. Your channel may grow slower than other ls but that’s because you’re not bought and paid for. Kudos to you man. 🤘

The deep forests here in Alberta are not the same, different tree species with bush and undergrowth. My daughter bushwacks year round for her job, lots of deadfall, peat pits. Beautiful and lots of wildlife.

It’s so great that you don’t sponsor any company, it makes your thoughts and recommendations on products credible. I would buy gear that you recommend, so thank you for your honesty. I have a question for you, I have wondered what emergency plan you have for yourself in the event of an accident or other misfortunes. I have to admit there’s times I’m a bit worried for you, even though we know you’re a pro at hiking and camping out in the wild. Stay safe!

So glad you found a good camping site in those woods. Yes do stay far from the thorn trees. I have seen Lynx in Wyoming, Bobcats in the Sierra Nevadas and in Southern Mexico in a tree on the banks of a remote river, a Jaguar. So, encounters with big cats is very dramatic I think (not up super close with any myself) but have seen each I mention in the wild along roads, in the brush and up that river bank tree (we were in a motorized canoe boat with a guide and it was in 1960 with my folks).

Growing up next to the west coast, all true about humidity. Friends visited and we sat outside to have lunch at a local fair. They complained that they couldn't get comfortable, (in the low 70's),. Sat in the shade under a tree in light breeze and it got chilly needing a sweater. Move a few inches into the sun and bake, lol. I always bring a light jacket when mountain biking as a result. As for the bobcat,...this seems to be the season. Almost hit one out driving at night and also saw one up real close biking a couple weeks ago. Seemed a bit weird to see one in the afternoon paying little mind to me or anyone else. It slowly crossed the street in front of me so I stopped about fifty feet back. It stopped,..looked back at me then slowly continued on. Big too. Big as a medium size dog. Not a cuddly kitty. Cheers. 👍

Hi Luke, I am one of your subscribers. You recommended a Forclaz 70L backpack to me which I purchased and use. I don't know if I am your only subscriber from New Mexico but there are darned few of us. As a westerner, I wanted to relate an incident about traveling back East in early Spring. I visited my sister who lived in Atlanta. I watched the temperatures in Albuquerque and Atlanta and looked forward to warmer temps there. I consider myself a pretty hardy guy but when I got there I was cold and could not warm up. First time in my life I had to ask someone to turn up the temperature in the house. Humidity is important. I have been out only twice this year, both times to the Jemez mountains to fish the Jemez river. Water temperature was 38 degrees and fish were not active. I asked the ranger and she recommended that I fish behind the hot springs up there. Went down the bank and started fishing. Had a strike and moved downstream. Found that the hot springs are used year round. I decided not to approach the people there. I did not want to watch your videos from a jail cell. The temperature that day was 44 degrees. I have always found you amazing that you could camp in freezing weather but those people who go down to the water in the buff and then come out wet, they have my respect.

    24:53 wind and tree dangers
it's been better than 20 years. and i of course didn't have any recording equipment with me.
i was in a mixed mainly oak and silver maple forest, a very cold day and early evening (teens to sub zero temps). so yeah, i wanted to go camping in the weather.
found a place i thought was good, flat ground semi-sheltered from the breeze, lots of hardwood littered the ground for a fire to last the night.
while i was setting up, i heard a loud crack, then what sounded like someone splitting a large board in half... that's when it fell. a huge branch off an oak. it was at least 10" in diameter maybe a little more. the whole thing had to weigh 800-1000 pounds. it hit the ground and more of it's branches broke making loud cracking sounds. this was a mostly living limb, it still had greenish parts on the off shoot branches. if i had been under it i would definitely have been killed or at least severely injured to a point of not being able to save myself.
there was no visible sign the limb was damaged before it fell. i've never trusted a space below a large oak since. those things are great stick factories for firewood but wow, dangerous to sleep under.

Yet another great video...... In UK can't wait for winter snow in our National Parks with a good old wild camp. Purchasing the KUIU Storm Star 2P for that adventure. Normally use my Fjallraven Abisko Lite 1 but at 62 need a little extra room for those long nights on a mountain.
