You must walk double the mileage showing us all your incoming/outgoing hiking! The amount of work and effort you put into each video does not go unnoticed. Thank you. I also liked your owl story. I love it when I can hear a visiting owl or two at night. 🦉

Thanks for showing me a great trip. I especially liked the story of the owl n deer. I’ve been fortunate enough to work in the western Canadian oil patch. Where we get off the highway and see things that no one else is lucky enough to. I’ve had ravens sit on my truck mirror, wondering what I’m having for lunch. Moose stick her head into the window and ask me to turn the page, cuz I’m reading to slow a wolf that I’ve known for 6 years,a little lake that I get water from every winter. He will make a path in the snow, just to show me things I would have missed. First flowers of the year, little beaver dam.every year I just have to think that he’s glad to see me again

There's a Waffle House right between the Base and the Meijer's there. It had an armed security officer overnight on the weekends because it got rowdy. A guy came into the Waffle House, sat down and ate a Waffle sandwich 🥪 😋 and then bolted out the door without paying. The security guy tried chasing him and actually fired a shot in the air to try to get the guy to stop. The guy heard the shot, thought he was being fired on so he drew his concealed carry pistol, spun around, and mag dumped the security guy. The security mag dumped return fire in turn. Wright Patterson Air Force Base thought it was a terrorist attack on the Base so they scrambled their Response Team (SWAT?) and all of their Military Police 🚔. Meanwhile, local Police, Sheriff's, State Troopers, and basically everyone on duty also responded code 3. Everyone in the Waffle House was watching the show as the area was overrun with first responders and even helicopters. Both of these guys mag dumped each other in the middle of the road, and neither one scored a single hit. They both went to jail. True story. Shout out to Wright Patterson Air Force Base!!!!

I was a Boy Scout in the 1960s we were at summer camp at camp Sabattus in New York and I was making pancakes that morning on an open fire and next thing I know I heard the scoutmaster saying Frank duck your head and I did and this white tail deer cleared the fire pit and me cooking pancakes, followed by two other ones including a fun. It was very interesting.

Yep. Talking about falling trees…. People seem to think widow-makers are only trees that are dead that come down. But they can easily be perfectly healthy live trees too. I’ve seen massive live pine trees in Colorado that have been snapped in half due to microbursts/sheer winds, etc. And these tree s were massive. Easily 3-4’ in diameter. It’s important to consider the lean of the trees you choose to set up near. And even that is no guarantee. But helps your odds of not being crushed. Stay safe out there everyone.

Hi Luke! Thanks for sharing that neat adventure! SO stoked you had your owl encounter! I've related in a comment for another video, how we had a little owl like that in our yard, and it was in no way afraid of us! SO COOL! That air pump and that neat stove are cool! You have to let us know what you think of them in a review episode! I have to admit that I am NOT a coffee person. BUT I did get some of the Taster's Nasty Hazlenut and the aroma is SUPER. Silly question, Luke, but why do you always put your tent so far away from your tarp setup? Here we always put a tent entrance under the tarp overhang. It keeps the doorway from getting wet if it rains so you don't have to worry about the interior / contents of your tent getting wet. It also allows you to have a wind break at one end of the tarp.

We have a few here in New Englad that height, 5000 feet and then Mount Washington pretty equal to his Grandfather Mountain. Both are amazing. Hard to p8ck a fav. Ours are not maybe as road accessible. I noticed that when I went all over his area for three weeks about a decade ago. Allot more road access. Here the presidential are all hiking and pretty brutal terrain. Buried in snow as well. He lives 8n a more Goldie Locks climate to me atleast, especially now here in New England summers are so hot now, so more like theirs.

I'm going to talk to Luke, But I'm Speaking to everyone. Luke, you mentioned that the tent material will "Stretch" and that there is a lack of space in this tent. I have a question about how to take up the slack automatically when it stretches. I have some small 10" Bungee's with a hook on each end. If you tie a Loop in the Guy Lines at about 11" to 12" down from the tent and hook a 10" Bungee to the loop in the line and the loop on the tent will that be enough to take the sag out of the material? If not, what about a Double Bungee on the line?

Winter has been terrible here in northwest Louisiana as well. We have been in the 80's most of February and even hit 90 degrees a few times. I love watching your videos Luke. Getting to see snow camping trips in the mountains is awesome.

Interesting video. I have a similar tent to your ATKO,. It is a Tarptent Moment DW that I use for winter camping. Because its ends are supported by A-shaped carbon fiber struts it is much more resistant to snow buildup at each end than your ATKO. As well I ran the optional Crossing Pole UNDER the fly ( pole shortened 5 inches) and secure it beneath the fly with shortened double sided Velcro cable ties sewn and seam sealed to the underside of the fly centerline. It is for snow load and wind stability.
The Moment DW has low end vents and high ridge pole vents is well ventilated.
TIP: Try a Trail Designs Sidewinder titanium Caldera Cone stove for ESBIT tablets, alcohol and, with the optional INFERNAL insert, a super hot "gassifier" wood stove. VERY light, compact when rolled up and super efficient at containing heat.

Great location, great gear, good coffee and a great camping buddy - as I camp vicariously through your video. It's always fun to stop by and see where you're going to take us! Whoa, that tripod thingy is sure clever looking - oh it's a upright light - like it! "Blinded by the light" I think I'd be real happy with those freeze dried meals seem to have good variety. So is it best to use alcohol as for fire starter in condition of wind and cold? Love the owl story! Isn't it neat feeling sometimes that animals may understand you? I swear my cat Callie MdNally is meowing saying "C'mon c'mon, are you coming" as she looks back at me following her down the hallway. Thanks for another great video excursion Luke, always enjoy them so much! When's Susie coming back, adventure together soon?

If it turned high winds I would prefer your akto over just about anything else, it's a bunker when the wind is howling. Good video and glad to see one in action. Thanks.

My Akto had a thorough testing in Norwegian October. One big storm was so scary the campsite owner insisted on me being in a hut for safety. I left the Akto out as a test. It is officially tougher than me.
The grounsheet shown is bigger than the official " footprint". In heavy rain you dont want water funneled inside.
The rigging at each end vent is wrong. The guy lines each side should also be rigged better. You only get big storm performance if the rigging is correct and tight.

Anyways I have been eyeing the small Flextail Gear ZERO pump. But 63 bucks now ouch. But I love ultralight stuff. Especially for my small EDC kit.
I have a Wood stove we heat with solely and the best thing I ever bought was a ZIPPO air blower. Just OMG. I was using the Pocket Bellows for a year prior. Fan on fire is a game changer seriously in so many ways, especiallyon damp wood.
A game changer just like for me a small an air mattress pump out camping was. I bought Flextail Gear's first pump they made and used it for years. I upgraded a few years ago to the bigger battery with light, bigger unit. I never use the light, lol, I love my Olite Obulb because of the red light feature and I love my mini Goal Zero Lanturn I don't even think they make the same model anymore. I got the bag lights you recommend on the strip and I love those too, and that's really enough.
With the zero I like you can replace the battery. That is another plus. I hope you tell us what you think.

Hilleberg Akto is a small, low-profile, 1-person tent. Materials, pole selection, zips, and workmanship are very good. This is a dependable little tent to go mild to wild. It is relatively lightweight, compact, and easy to set up. It will handle higher winds as well as shoulder season 3+ and can be pushed into 4th season. For the full-on real winter demanding conditions... design and size wise there are limitations. Consider things like having a warmer R-value, larger sleeping bag and pad will take up alot more space inside the tent, plus anything winter stuff, water, etc. you bring inside as well with you. Akto is a well proven tent. Kind of expensive. Good thing to know is that it meets a high standard and delivers on high quality.

at 26:39, you show temperature of 10F/12.2C, but I think you left out the negative sign (-), because 10º F is -12.2º C, just saying. Also, since your twig stove works so well, why do you also need an alcohol stove? Or put another way, why only carry two kinds of stoves? Why not more?

Sounds like the weather we've been getting in Washington State on the eastern side. Not much snow, but wind and rain. Gusts have been over 50 mph and cold! The owl you showed, looks to be an Eastern Screech Owl. We have great horned and barred owls here in Washington, and they are fun to listen to.

The guy line configuration is incorrect. The middle fly pullout should be staked to the ground so that the lines form a "W". Without the center guy line tensioned, the tent would not perform well in either high winds nor a snow load. I have had an Akto since 2003, and, yes, it soaks up water, and it does stretch, but it's much stronger than polyester which doesn't stretch much, but is weaker for the same weight.
The alcohol stove looks exactly like one called the "Paco", or "Palco" which we (tried) to sell in an outfitter where I worked in the early 1990s. People would admire its looks, then pick it up and immediately put it back. It was HEAVY! I thought about buying it just to try it, but...
    It was HEAVY!
Nice to see the design in use.
