    I grew up in Southern California my Grandfather bought his home in 1940 where he planted a avocado tree in the backyard. My mother has pictures of her standing next to the tree in 1950 I was born in 1969 though the years we took pictures the tree grew really large. We always took pictures standing next to it really cool to watch my Mom who was born in 1937 grow up standing in front of that tree then me as a kid as we both aged the tree looked the same. The last time I saw it was in 2005 when my grandfather died they sold the house the new owners cut it down the following year :( That tree produced wheel barrow full of Avocado's

    Great video, thanks for sharing. I love that you planted the trees when your daughter was born. It’ll make wonderful conversations with your daughter as she grows up and hopefully get into gardening too. Regarding your trees, looks like they did really well without needing sunscreen. I have planted two seedlings and just painted their trunks which in hindsight seems unnecessary.

      It is useful to whitewash avocado tree branches which have full sun exposure, especially if temperature can get over 90F. Green bark on young branches is very tender and can sunburn easily.

    I followed the same paper you did and planted two trees on a mound 8 years ago. I created the mound out of decomposed granite (DG) which avocado trees love. The trees (Lamb Hass and Sir Prize) are about 15 ft tall now and are starting to grow very large. One tree is an A pollinator and the other is a B and initially the trees produced so much fruit that the trees couldn't hold on to them and dropped a lot of them. Then the next year they would not produce any fruit because I believe they got stressed from producing too much the year before. Now they are in this alternate bearing mode where one produces one year and the other produces next year. If I had to do it over again I think I would have planted two A trees or two B trees but not one of each.

    • @SubtropicalFruitGarden
      @SubtropicalFruitGarden  2 роки тому +1

      MrEdwinHardesty, Thank you for watching!
      I am glad your trees are growing well!
      Avocado trees of most varieties have a tendency to adopt an alternate bearing cycle. Pre-bloom pruning of trees that are expected to set a heavy crop could reduce the number of fruits that set and break the alternate bearing cycle.

      James T Nguyen, Thank you for watching!
      Yes, a little more water is needed with comfrey near avocado trees. Comfrey's growth is limited during the year, and it grows to the same size every year. If you chop comfrey's leaves from time to time, it should reduce water loss through evaporation.

    • @SubtropicalFruitGarden
      @SubtropicalFruitGarden  4 роки тому +2

      Kyutto Gatto, Thank you for watching!
      Avocado trees like Mediterranean climate. If the temperature in winter doesn't drop below freezing, your avocado tree will survive. Once established, avocado trees can tolerate temperatures down to -2C.
      You can plant your seedling when it is 1 to 2 feet tall. You can plant it any time of the year. Keep it well watered if planting in summer.
      Keep in mind that avocado tree grown from seed will start producing fruit after about 10 year. Also the fruit will not taste the same as the avocado you ate.
      You can always graft one or more known avocado varieties on you seedling tree. After grafting, the tree will start producing fruit in about 2 years.

    When u grew these trees what was the least amount of time year-wise for fruit to appear after planting?

    • @SubtropicalFruitGarden
      @SubtropicalFruitGarden  3 роки тому

      Adam Tain, Thank you for watching!
      I planted grafted avocado trees. Fruit started developing about a year after planting. Then it took about 18 months for fruit to mature.

    • @adamtain7627
      @adamtain7627 3 роки тому

      And after that 18 months u can pick them right there and then? And if I used fertilizer everyday from planting how much faster would they mature?

    • @SubtropicalFruitGarden
      @SubtropicalFruitGarden  3 роки тому

      @@adamtain7627, Avocado trees don't need a lot of fertilizer. With fertilizer the tree will grow more vigorously, but the fruit will not mature any faster.

    • @adamtain7627
      @adamtain7627 3 роки тому

      I see but what’s important is that 18 months is the minimum maturing time and u can pick all of them after that?

    • @SubtropicalFruitGarden
      @SubtropicalFruitGarden  3 роки тому

      @@adamtain7627, Yes, you can pick all of them at that time.

    When do you prune your avocados?

    • @SubtropicalFruitGarden
      @SubtropicalFruitGarden  3 роки тому

      EVA JOO, Thank you for watching!
      If you want to control the size and shape of your avocado tree, the best time to prune is in winter.
      If you want to encourage good regrowth, prune in spring.

      Grafted avocado trees can give fruit in 2 years. My fruit on the Lamb Hass avocado tree is almost ready to harvest now (June), but it can hang on the tree for several more months.

      Sam, Thank you!
      I purchased Reed avocado tree at Atkins Nursery in Fallbrook; Lamb Haas avocado tree at Otto & Sons Nursery in Fillmore; and Kona Sharwil on eBay.

      @@SubtropicalFruitGarden I am in Orange County and I have been looking at Home Depot and various nurseries in the area. I have not seen any Reed Avocado trees, mostly Haas. I really enjoyed your planting video. I have tried growing trees in clay and I was unsuccessful. I did not know clay was that bad for avocado trees. Next time I will do much more prep work and built a mound with better drainage and soil. Thanks

      You can check Laguna Hills Nursery in Santa Ana. From their newsletter 2 weeks ago they had a few Carmen, GEM, Reed, and Sharwil avocado trees. They also wrote that more trees will arrive in spring. In spring you can also order avocado trees online at www.fourwindsgrowers.com/
      Good luck with your new avocado tree!

      Thank you so much for your help in tracking down a Reed avocado tree, I did track down a Reed from a grower in Pomona. Now I have a Reed and a Hass so I do want to get a type B in the future. Maybe I will try grafting a type B like you did in one of your videos.

    • @SubtropicalFruitGarden
      @SubtropicalFruitGarden  4 роки тому +1

      Bløssom And Friends, the size of avocado seed doesn't matter. Nurseries like to use bigger seeds because they grow more vigorously. Seed of any size will grow well if it came from a ripe avocado fruit.

      Yes, theoretically, avocado trees can reach 30+ feet. However, it is much easier to pick fruit from a smaller tree. I plan to prune my trees and keep them under 12-15 feet tall. Even commercial avocado growers prune their trees every year.
