  • This video will teach you techniques for pruning avocado trees to keep them small by encouraging low branching. The avocado tree in this video is a Type A semi dwarf avocado variety called a Lila Avocado and it is an ideal variety to grow in smaller yards and small spaces.
    Pruning avocados is best done while the tree is young to achieve the desired shape early. Avocado pruning when young will allow the tree to recover quickly when they're most vigorous.
    Because avocado trees grow in warm climates and are evergreen trees that lack a true dormancy period, when and how to prune avocado tree branches depends on your personal preferences.
    The best tools for pruning avocado tree wood are sharp hand pruners for the smaller branches and a Japanese saw (AKA pull saw) to prune avocado branches larger than the width of your ring finger. Always clean your tools before pruning avocado plant material.
    If you have any questions about how to prune an avocado tree, how to grow avocado trees, growing avocado trees in cold climates, the things I am growing in my garden, are looking for any garden tips and tricks, or have questions about gardening and organic gardening in general, please ask in the Comments below!

    I really wish I had seen this video 2 years ago. I have 5 indoor avocado plants of which 2 are now about 3 feet across the ceiling. They are all tall and skinny with huge/massive leaves. The trees are about 2-3 years old. I hate the way they look and I’ve already cut off at least 5’ from the top. I’m almost tempted now to just get rid of them because they look so ugly. Is there a way of saving them? They do not have any wood stems. At most, the bottom part is maybe 1” thick.

      Yes, my avocado is thriving. However, our climates are very different. My summers are long and hot, which avocados need to produce fruit. Your summers are very short and cool, so I would think you'd have to grow an avocado in a container and you'd need a greenhouse to help attract the heat required to ripen fruits. I do not think an avocado would work out well in your cool summers if it's in ground. You can try, but it would be very difficult.

    So this can be applied to non-dwarf trees as well? Like Hass?

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  3 роки тому +1

      Yes. You can apply this method to any tree you want to keep small. For larger fruit trees like a Hass, it'll be even more effective to low-cordon it like I do with my figs here: ua-cam.com/video/9HhiABxJ298/v-deo.html
      However, if the tree is too mature to espalier at this point, you can certainly just prune it low, or develop your own low-cordons by allowing the low branches to grow very wide while keeping the top short.

    What city and state can you grow avocado tree. Can it be grown in Dallas TX

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  3 роки тому

      If you want to grow an avocado tree with minimal care, you'll want to be in at least Zone 9, preferably Zone 9b, and grow a cold-hardy variety like a Lila. Dallas is Zone 8a (same zone as mine), and an avocado tree cannot be grown there unprotected. I am growing an avocado in Zone 8a because I am growing a dwarf variety in a very sheltered area, and I religiously protect it during the winter with plant covers and incandescent Christmas lights for warmth. Keep in mind that if I miss one bad night, the tree could die. For example, with that crazy freeze you just got where Dallas went to 4 degrees F and lost power, this tree would be killed outright. If I have a freak cold snap paired with a historic freeze, I'd be in deep trouble. Basically, it is a huge risk doing this because my climate is far too cold to grow an avocado, but I'm doing it, anyway. If you want to grow it in-ground, you'll have to go to extreme lengths to protect it. You can grow it in a container, though, and bring it inside during the winter. I recommend the Lila variety because it's a semi-dwarf.

    If you turn a 30' tree into a 8' tree, will you be also reducing the annual yield?

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  3 роки тому

      Probably. A smaller tree means less wood, which means less opportunities for flowers. However, if you have a 30' tree and you can't reach anything above 10', or you have to get out such a massive ladder that it's a life or death situation to harvest your crop, it may be worth it. I don't want to harvest my fruit with a ladder, personally. Too many accidents happen that way. You have to weigh total yields versus convenience and safety.

      Hozor A Elahy hmm, maybe it is because they come from climates with a cool season? Maybe your climate is too hot all year long and there isn’t enough of a difference in daylight between winter and summer? Some fruit trees need chill hours and a big difference in day length during seasons. Maybe you could give it artificial darkness in the winter?

    I am a new subscriber and just finished watching a few of your videos. You managed to give me so much information without losing me. Everything was very well explained and I was excited to see that you can grow a type of avocado in North Carolina. What is the taste and texture like? I was born and raised in Southern California. I have two avocado trees. One was huge until it got pruned this year. I stopped counting the avocados picked at 726. The other tree, I keep low and am surprised I haven't killed it by the way I was trimming to try and Preserve the ocean view. I even bungee down some of the branches. Interesting that the tree I keep low always has large Hass avocados. The taller tree that goes wild has much smaller fruit, larger seed and thinner skin. They are both hass grafted with fuerte. Both are buttery and creamy tasting but the tall tree with the smaller avocados, taste just a little better.
    I thought about moving from Southern California but I don't think I could survive without my avocado trees. It's no joke!

      @@ocnealocneal6549 I am in the Southbay , about a 15 minute drive from where the cliff just crumbled. I have two Haas trees. I believe they’re grafted with Fuerte so they’ll produce every year. The only reason one of my trees is short is because I try to keep my view open. Both of my trees are on each corner of the backyard and they’re both covering the ocean view but, that’s how much I love avocados. I planted them about 25 years ago and I do try to trim the tall one out of courtesy for my neighbors so I don’t block their view but it is still about 30 to 35 feet tall. I made a big mistake this year and trimmed it myself when it was loaded with avocados. the avocados are still there but I think it’s stunted their growth because they’re the same size as they were a few months ago. There are hundreds, but I may end up with a giant seed and little fruit. The other tree has large avocados but they take a long time to ripen and in the meantime, the squirrels enjoy them immensely.
      I was recently reading that the price of avocados are going to continue to come down, because so many people invested in avocado groves, and now that they are maturing in producing, there’s a lot of competition .

Near or during new moons the salvia is found in the roots making it ideal for pruning. This is something many don't consider when tending to there plants. Knowledge of moon cycles is imperative for tending to all of your plants needs.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  4 роки тому +9

      Mo De ah, I forgot they were seed grown. Fruit trees don’t grow true to type, so although you have planted 12 Haas avocado pits, none of the trees will be a Haas. Each seed will be an entirely new, unique variety, just like every egg inside ovaries will produce a unique child different than the mother. So, you’ll have 12 unique trees, just like if a mother had 12 children, they would all be unique. So, likely, some will be Type A and some will be Type B and pollinate each other.
      Believe it or not, but every Haas avocado tree on earth is a clone. All originated from a single tree that some farmer selected as a worthy variety. Each tree is identical. Same goes for every other named fruit. Take a red delicious apple. Only one ever grew from a seed, and someone took it and cloned it a million times over from cutting wood. That goes for any “named” fruit.

I followed the exact same process during germination (soaked in water until root formation then potted in soil with a glass jar covering each seed until stem formation for a mini greenhouse effect) -with 100% success. • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  3 роки тому +7

      My avocado tree is still alive, but it takes a lot of work to keep it alive. It needs to be planted up against a south-facing brick wall. It needs to be covered in incandescent Christmas lights. It needs to be covered in a plant jacket. It needs to be meticulously pruned to stay small every year. Avocado trees cannot survive long-term anywhere in North Carolina without significant protection, and all it takes is for you to forget one night to lose it. I also live in one of the warmest parts of North Carolina, so if you're not immediately along the coast, the chances of success are so low I wouldn't recommend it. I also own one of the most cold hardy avocados known that's also a semi-dwarf. You definitely can't plant a non-dwarfing, non-hardy avocado here. I wouldn't suggest this unless you have everything perfectly planned.

      I would be terrified of planting an avocado so close to a wall, because of the roots.
      Do you have BACON avocado trees? They can take light frosts. Mine grew happily through winter. I get temps from probably -7° C through to 38°C. It was fine in winter, in a place under fairly solid overhangs of evergreen branches. but I lost it to root rot, in the summer.
      Had 4 avocados come up from seed. Put every avocado seed I had from eating, in pots with other plants in them. 2 had their tops eaten by possums. 2 are now 2' high.
      I think in first year of life. They are supposed to be very delicate in cold. I only remembered to put a cover over them in 2nd half of winter. Again, they sat most of the winter in shade of a cypress, on a table, about 3 foot off the ground. I am not in a valley, but most of the way up a small rise. I always lose my avocados, always Bacon, in summer, to root rot.
      This time, I shall just see what happens to my freebies. I thought I might grow in pot, maybe make an individual glass house, with scrounged wooden windows on all sides. Maybe a layer of clear sheet plastic over 'glass house' for extra protection in winter, held down with bricks. I believe there are 2 more avocadoes that can take light frost but harder to get than Bacon. Bacon are expensive, hard to get delivered and I have killed about 6, with root rot, in summer. No problem winter.
      I now feel like a.Bacon avocado murderer, so I am hoping these normal avocadoes learn to take the cold, from babyhood. I was told I could expect avocsdoes from trees grown from seed, at about 8 years. Very few, year 8, but more and more, after.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  3 роки тому +1

      Is it seed grown or is it a grafted tree you purchased? Avocado trees will grow "straight up" from seed or from a fresh graft. What you should do with an avocado is encourage branching and an open center by "heading it" - literally decapitating it - around 12-16 inches tall. This will encourage low branching and keep the tree shorter. Otherwise, it will continue to grow up and up. Here is a good graphic: i.pinimg.com/originals/81/1b/65/811b65f83c6010a0c465e253aace57bf.jpg
      This isn't true for all trees necessarily (like apple trees should grow straight up and not be headed), but for avocados, it helps.

However the tree has a 2-3” dia. branch that is bowed over 90 deg and is about 4+ ft of bare branch with a large clump of leaves at the end. I will likely cut it off to make it the same height as the other branches but the problem is that if I cut it to size it would leave the entire western quadrant including the whole interior exposed to the strong afternoon sun here in SCal. Should I cut it anyway? I also recently whitewashed all the larger branches greater than about an inch in diameter.

      This tree is a grafted avocado. I would caution against growing avocados from seed because:
      1. They won't grow true to type. Commercial avocado growers mix A-type and B-type avocados for cross-pollination, so seed-grown avocados are going to be genetically unique crosses that will likely have inferior fruit.
      2. Avocado trees take 10-15 years to hold mature fruit from seed.
      Even grafted avocado trees can take 3-5 years to hold their fruit until maturity. This tree is 3 years old, and it still dropped its crop this season. Avocado trees are a long-term investment, and you can have a baby and put your child into high school before a seed-grown avocado fruits in some cases 😂 I don't mean to discourage, but I do want to inform that a seed-grown avocado tree is a very long-term investment.

    thanks for the great Lila avocado videos and want to continue to see how Lila fares in the future in zone 8a being a tree only for 8b+ and being pruned heavily, I learned my lesson avocados do not produce when heavily pruned, it takes many years to recover, all they will want to do is grow new leaves, not flower because the leaves need to be heavy to produce fruit, with a heavy canopy, i heard that avocados do not like to be pruned and won't flower or fruit because they may take 2 years or more after pruning to flower again. the dilemma with avocados is contrary to other deciduous trees if you prune you don't get fruit! I don't prune my avocados anymore I learned it interferes with good fruit production you will have to wait even longer for the free to recover and produce more fruit, I have a 20 yr mexicola Grande that I pruned the heck out of like yours, after it got to 20 ft, at 5 yrs old, and it never did produce much after that, however this year it has about 40 avocados this year and is a forced dwarf that is trying to regrow this time I'm going to let it grow naturally, its now 8 ft tall, and growing heavily upward, I also have in zone 9a 20 yr old wurtz that's 12-14 ft tall, with heavy canopy, 30-50 avocados, and newly planted gwen, reed, lamb hass, Jim bacon, bacon, holiday, all growing in the ground in zone 9a ( our lowest temp this winter of 2020/2021 was 29 degrees for 1-2 hours in the morning and I didn't even have to cover the new avocado planting i found the Lila videos informative about experimental growth of avocado in a warmest microclimate in a marginal/ and colder than normal growing zone Liked your Lila avocado so much i bought one also from. The same place, I hope mine in the mail now is the same size I'm planning to grow it in the ground I'm in inland empire, los angeles i originally saw snow in your yard and said avocados growing in the snow?

    • @TheMillennialGardener

      Avocado trees have a soft root system. The root system is also shallow. They are not known to be particularly invasive. Because I knew the only place this tree could survive is up against my house due to our Zone 8 winters, I went with a semi-dwarf variety. I would not advise a full-size avocado tree planted so close to a house because avocados can grow 30 feet tall. This variety tops out at 10-12 feet, and it can be maintained via pruning at 6-8 feet. I will be keeping this semi-dwarfing variety small.

      Avocados cannot survive outdoors in my climate. It's a full hardiness zone too cold. Maintaining this avocado in-ground requires careful micro-climate construction and protection during the winter. It has to be this exact variety because it is a very rare semi-dwarf and one of the top 2 or 3 hardiest varieties known. I don't want any additional varieties that may grow more vigorously. My personal opinion is the best time to prune your avocado tree is right after you harvest your fruits. That is going to vary per variety, since some varieties are much earlier or later than others. As soon as you pick the fruits, that's when you should prune. That way, you can give it a pretty significant pruning, and the tree will have as much time as possible to grow new wood back to flower for the new season. I believe the typical winter-pruning that most fruit trees undergo is bad with avocados, since they flower in the winter. If you winter-prune them, you'll cut off all the fruitwood!

    Can someone help? I want to plant two avocado trees in North Port, Florida (zone 9b) but cannot remove canopy trees for a couple of years. My question is, can avocado trees be radically pruned down to a manageable size in a couple of years without permanently damaging fruit production or killing the trees? Avocado trees in the wild often start out in shady forest openings and shoot up to get to the light becoming very tall trees. So I think planting avocados under openings in the tree canopy can give them a head start until I can get a permit to remove the surrounding pines. The canopy should also protect the young trees from frost until they get big enough to handle Central Florida winters. But can they be cut back?

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  2 роки тому

      Avocados can’t spend much time below freezing, so growing in ground would be impossible. You can grow them in containers, but you will need two things:
      1. A very sunny south facing window.
      2. Added grow lights.
      In your area, because your sun is too weak during the winter, you will need to supplement the tree with a grow light for it to make it through the winter. Once the freezes stop, you’ll need to slowly acclimate it to real sunshine each summer, then start acclimating it back indoors when the frosts start again. You’ll need to be careful and protect it from frost.
      It will be work for you to grow an avocado, but it can be done. Go with either Lila or Wurtz, because they are somewhat dwarfing varieties.

      It is a dwarf variety. It will easily be maintained at 6 feet tall. In California, people plant full sized varieties near their homes. Anywhere else, this tree will die because I live in Zone 8a.

  • @descargaelbano
    @descargaelbano 3 роки тому

    Sad to see that the tree was planted so close to the house. It will be a constant maintenance problem. When cutting the avocado you should always seal the ends as the wood rots easily, and keep the roots away from excess moisture, as they are flood sensitive and can die easily in the presence of excess water in the soil.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  3 роки тому

      I'm in Zone 8a. The tree has to be planted up against the south wall of the house or it will die. It's the only micro-climate that can sustain the tree. It is a dwarf avocado tree, so maintenance is not an issue. It only requires a hard pruning come September. The tree grows about 7 feet in a single season, so it's perfectly happy in its environment.

      It is pruning. Pruning implies removal of wood with intent. That is exactly the purpose of this. A 12-20 foot tall avocado tree is of no value to me. A 6-8 foot tall tree is of high value. Trees don’t produce food for you. They produce fruits for reproductive purposes. If you want to harness a fruit tree’s natural gift for your use, you need to train it to do so, because it won’t do so voluntarily.

      Generally speaking, the first year you plant a tree in-ground, it will spend its time growing roots. Your tree is growing, but it's growing underground. Trees do not want to grow "up" until they have the root structure below to support it. Remember this rhyme: *The first year they sleep, the second year they creep, the third year they leap.* You're in the sleeping year. Expect small upward growth next season, and a huge explosion in growth the third.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  3 роки тому

      Avocado trees are subtropical, so most people that grow them don't have a true "winter." Since avocado trees don't have a dormancy period, it really doesn't matter when you transplant them for the most part if you live in a place where it never frosts or freezes. However, if you do live in a place where it frosts or freezes like I do, you should plant them in the spring after your last frost date, so the tree has maximum time in-ground to establish before you get your first freeze. If you're lucky to live in a frost-free place that's warm all year, avoid planting during the hottest part of the year because heat stress isn't good for young trees. If you were in the Caribbean, for example, I'd plant during the "winter", even though it isn't really a winter.

    Can you grow Avocado trees by planting the seed/pit? Do the have to be grafted?

      Yes, you can, but seed-grown avocado trees can take up to 10-15 years to begin to fruit and hold fruit to maturity. If you grow an avocado from seed, you can likely conceive a child and get them into high school before you'll be harvesting fruit from your avocado tree. The other problem is commercial avocados are almost always cross-pollinated, so you will get some random, genetically unique avocado tree that may not be any good. You may wait 15 years to find out your avocados are small, bland, stringy, and low in oil content. I recommend only buying known high quality varieties that are grafted. Grafted trees will provide high quality fruit within 3-5 years.

    Great info and beautiful tree. Can you use some of the cuttings to grown another avocado?

      Thank you! You can grow avocado seedlings, cut the seedlings and graft this scion wood to make a clone of the tree.
