I live in the Mojave Desert. My tall Trichocereus has to be regularly watered during our summer. I prefer to water days before a forecast of extreme heat so the cacti has stored water in it. Then I don’t water on the hottest days as the cacti tends to shut down during extreme heat… I love your columnars. So many varieties! 😊
Ah that's interesting cause if the soil is dry I'll water. But not sure why they have struggled this time. Thanks appreciate . Also like your collection and videos 😁
Definitely a combination of too much water, gaining a lot of weight, and then roots starting to suffer, followed by high heat stress, random jacked up combination of events
That sucks mate Over here in the west there used to the high temps but we seem to be having trouble with thrips this year due to high humidity, little bastards been attacking pups and seedlings but not killing anything so far.
I think you're spot on, heat and then too much water at the wrong time. I am in SE Gulf Coast Texas, and I have to be careful of the same issue. I grow tricho grandiflora hybrids, and they are highly susceptible to extreme heat etiolation. My buddy was growing in Austin, TX, and I kid you not his tricho grew at least 60cm that summer. My opuntia macrodasys... floptina in the heat.
It makes me wonder if the hybrids that are effected ? im in America in Socal and the temps in the summer are the same temps you get and i noticed my hybrids get effected and not the Heirlooms .
Yea could definitely be a factor. Though most of the ones that fell over where bridge or bridge hybrids so I feel they already fall over pretty easy but the rest were real soft too
The ones on the outer edges or if they are by themselves could have been getting hot but when they are bundled up together I doubt it gets that hot. But can also imagine the plastic pots aren't doing them good haha
im wondering if some of your casualties may have root issues? i tend to water frequently in the summer 100 degree days with no problems. hope you can figure out the problem though!
Well out of around 2000 it happened to about 6 or something so I'm not really worried. 90% were bridge which are super skinny and the other was a small cuz that was top heavy.

How hot has your concrete been getting?
May have been cooking the roots in plastic pots?

You should do topiary ideas with the graphs
make a home made Senoia cactus 🌵
letters and numbers
put a board at the top of short see if it canopies out
You can make concrete designs or pictures or your logo and let the plant grow around it or even at the top to grow up through
