You’d think that after over a hundred years of automotive manufacturing GM could have figured out how to make a fuel pump module that didn’t fail constantly. For those who tow know, that was a nice job loading that truck. It’s easy to just hook and drag across the pavement.
I've been saying this for a long time now. With over 100 years experience, they haven't yet figured out how to maintain a high standard of reliability. Fuel pumps, injectors, AFM, Magna Ride, windshield wipers, 8L90, etc. The list is too long of things they should have been able to perfect by now. Yet, I'm the one stuck paying the repair bills. Am I the luckiest to have a 20.18 Denali with Magna Ride, a 6.2 with AFM and an 8L90? Here in Canada at around 55k KM I had to replace the front Magna ride (quoted 3300$). Then near the same time ran into transmission problems which were addressed by kicking the problem down the road (fluid change) as now at 80k KM all the problems are are back. Yesterday, I shifted to drive and it didn't move, just revved up and then lurched HARD into gear. I'm not excited for it to fail, it's going to cost what 10k maybe? This truck was MSRP ~73k CDN when I bought it. By the time I hit 200k KM, it's possible that I would have spent over 30k in repairs. The cost of these trucks is way too high given the number of issues and costs associated with ownership. You would have to be a fool to buy one. More bonus bucks for Mary Barra right out of your pocket and mine. Next time, I'm going to try a Toyota, overall it seems they have reliablility figured out much better.
My friend HAD a '22 Silverado 1500 (3.0 Diesel) like this. Bad fuel pump relay. I towed it on HIS trailer but not before his private mechanic used a wrench to get it into neutral and zip tied it in place, He also had to do something with the electric parking brake on both rear wheels so it would roll while we winched it onto the trailer. What a freaking pain in the butt!!
I bought a 2017 Silverado January 2021. One owner, like new, 85 thousand milees. Fifteen thousand miles and two transmissions later I traded it for a 2018 Honda Ridgeline. GM vehicles are junk. My previous truck was a Toyota which I bought new in 1999 and drove 22 years. I'm 76 years old by the way and baby my vehicles.

I’m a mechanical engineer for over 35+ years. It’s fascinates me to watch these guys make short work of hauling a vehicle. For those of us from the rust belt, fly over region of USA, where people tow their own vehicles know what this young man did is a 4 hour job for us amateurs. Tow truck technology has morphed into something completely different than 40/50 years ago where it was a hood and chain. Lots of time, when we were teens and 20s, pushed or pulled with a chain or if you were lucky you could get a few 100’ of seat belt webbing. Towing was exciting because rear vehicle had to do the braking. If the brakes were shot you tie a few tires, less rims to the front or rear between the vehicles and kept the speed under 25. 3 tires can stop a car from 25 if tow car stays off the brakes and bounces forward upon impact. I specialized in safety engineering after all the near fatal car repair events I had before I was 19 years old. Similar experiences with boats and motor cycles. It’s what little boys do and now I see little girls out doing it too. At the time, with a brain that as of yet was not fully developed is what we did, it was common sense at the time, now, we were nutz. The good old days, it a wonder a lot of us are still here.

I goes a lot more places than my previous SUV but I'm not doing any real intense off-roading. The Ridgeline is the right combination of car/crossover-SUV characteristics and truck characteristics. I'm not bagging on anybody else's choices, it's what works best for me.

It's that they purposely design them to fail, so you have to keep replacing parts, so they make more money. It's sacrificing reputation for increased profit, and something all modern manufacturers unfortunately do.

That's b'cuz the new GM parts now-a-days are made in China
Next time, I'm going to try a Toyota, overall it seems they have reliablility figured out much better.
funny the other day i drove a guy to get his other vehicle when his gm fuel pump failed in the costco parking lot... didnt know it was common
Well how will that make them any money? They need fools to go into the service bays.
Best Chinese parts they could find...
Wow!! I'm amazed at the many features this tow truck has with its carrying platform. Tow trucks have come a long way!
Dustin, you sure do know how to work the bed of your truck. I was quite impressed. I really enjoyed this video! Thanks for sharing! 😊
Thank You! Glad you’re enjoying the content!
I’ve had to do that before. Unless the customer I just absolutely against skates and dragging it, I won’t get under it and do all that.
RAMs dont have that problem .... even in 2013 !!!! LOL!!!!!

Thank You so much! I appreciate that!!
Still have my '02 Tundra 4x4 that I bought new in '02. Still running after 22 years & nothing but routine maintenance.
if you have parts put in from gm, why do you think it is going to work the second time? have the transmission rebuilt by a qualified transmission rebuilder. they put aftermarket parts in to correct issues.
yep 2004 sold it. I never had one break down ever. bought a new tundra.

That is quite a tow truck. I admire how you take of the customers vehicles. Be safe.

If that would take you four hours with the same equipment you're not much of an engineer of any sort.
I will never buy another vehicle without recovery hooks. I bought my last GM in January 2019 (a half ton 4x4 1500 chevy. That truck was garbage). Nice of you to care about your customers! That was actually very interesting to watch!
You’re the best tow Guy I’ve ever seen and you own an amazing rig. I really enjoyed watching you load up the GMC truck!
Thank You!
It’s amazing the crap we living in America allow auto manufactures to sell us. Truly amazing.
Imagine the possibilities of what goes unseen that are digestible
But, don't forget the government. They are mandating all kinds of adds that make no sense, but pay their friends well.
Well when people are willing to pay an arm and a leg for crap then why not sell them crap. Look at it from their point of view, why should they improve something or make it work if there are thousands of idiots willing to keep buying junk.
Not only that but suburban dads feel the need to spend 80k or more on this crap. Gravy Seals.
but but but reliability cannot be put onto spec sheet or the marketing brochures. Just gimme HP/TQ, payload, tow rating, and maybe some gimmicky app/screen and I will buy these over MSRP.
Wow! I had no idea about that problem with GM products. Great job operating your tow truck, which is quite a machine. Keep up the very professional work. Excellent job! 👍🏼
40 plus years in the repair business + towing excellent job. Kudos to someone who really cares about his work.
This is why many of us are buying Toyota/Lexus vehicles. Reliability, and you can go for years without a need of being towed. Great video Dustin.
And Honda/ Acura and Subaru. And even Genesis
Exactly I have a 1998 Lexus LS 400 it's got 400,000 miles on it and still rides like a new car. I bought it in 2012 with 205,000 miles on it.
This is why I went with the Honda Ridgeline. I don't need that much truck and for the desert recreation that I do, the Ridgeline works great. I goes a lot more places than my previous SUV but I'm not doing any real intense off-roading. The Ridgeline is the right combination of car/crossover-SUV characteristics and truck characteristics. I'm not bagging on anybody else's choices, it's what works best for me.

When I worked at a Honda/Acura dealer I replaced at least 2 transmissions a week. Suburu...yea don't get me started.
Nissan is the best of the breed and most underrated but I would NEVER buy a used one after working in that dealership. You idjits do NOT believe in oil.
Defective fuel pumps and no shift release. Good job, GM. 🙄

The best type of shifter is attached to a New Process transmission, it moves front to back & sideways. To use it requires pushing a pedal with your left foot to select a gear. It also allows for push starting the truck when the battery is dead.
I still have 2 nv4500 chevy trucks. Over 200,000 still going.

And if you do, it's probably not too hard to turn your Ram into one.
Mine is an 09 6.7 with a 6 speed, and other than a couple of issues with the POS Dodge clutch, mine is fine too. I would refuse to have an electrically controlled transmission. I do not even like the button to turn on the 4 wheel drive. I like a lever that you pull. 100% mechanical. I wish that instead of buying this 09, I would have bought a clean 5.9 12 valve, and rebuilt everything.

Great job of loading and unloading!!! Back in my days of towing, we never used those straps between the spokes of the wheels. The webbing of the straps would leave small imprints in the finish. But also when I drove a tow truck, those interference engines would also brake a belt . I could predict the mileage on their car. 80K for local, 100-120K highway. Then they changed to a timing chain , problem eliminated. Thank for sharing.

Never had a problem with a tow truck driver. They are awesome. Even when I was towed in a parkinglot scam, when I picked my truck up an hour later, the guy was super cool and helped me open my truck to get the spare key since I lost my keys walking to the tow yard at 9 at night. I drove back the way I walked and found my keys after...lol
Excellent job Dustin. Taking pics and video are excellent tools to help prevent complaints and lawsuits. From the look of the tires, that was a low mileage truck. GM not so much. Working Fire/EMS the tow truck operators were extremely helpful at auto collision scenes and I was very grateful and happy to work with them. Both my Titan and my wife's Mazda go into neutral w/o starting the engine. If you have a dead battery, it's a different story.

It is amazing how much GM's Mechanical Quality has declined since the 2000s.
Everybody’s quality has declined since the 2000’s. That was peak manufacturing and engineering. A lot of those trucks 20 plus years and still on the road. Now they are engineered failed look at so the plastic in the engine bays now. Wasn’t like that back in 2k. I actually sold my 15 6.7 f250 for a 2000 excursion with the 7.3l. Almost same mileage but I know the 7.3 will last 500k the new diesels with the emissions stuff I was nearing end of life unless I wanted to spend 4-5k every time it broke down
I don't know man, Toyota cars even made in 2012 still hold up good. Priuses with 300,000 miles and more still driving around as Taxis.@@bradleylayton1741
It's not that they (any, and all manufacturers) don't know how to engineer reliable products. It's that they purposely design them to fail, so you have to keep replacing parts, so they make more money. It's sacrificing reputation for increased profit, and something all modern manufacturers unfortunately do.
GM has been on a decline since the late 70’s
