On today’s video, we’re towing a new GMC Acadia, that left the driver and her children stranded on the side of the road, in the rain, presumably after the Fuel Pump Module failed. One of the most common problems I see on the newer GMC trucks and SUV’s.

The fact that it won’t let you shift without the engine running is insane. Imagine you run out of gas in an intersection and you can’t even push the car to the side of the road.

Any new vehicles with a pushbutton transmission have a park pawl release on top of the transmission. It will be a giant pain to deal with in situations like these.
I literally ran out of gas on the way to work. 1 day period I was late. I was pushing it not literally yet. I was pushing it to try to get there on the amount of gas I had. I was at a major intersection in the left turn lane and it's stalled I. Immediately knew I was done for. But I looked to my right and there were no cars coming yet. I quickly got out of my car. Ran in the middle of the 3 oncoming lanes of traffic and put my hands up to stop them miraculously. They understood my cues. Then I ran back to my 73 Ford F250, which I was easily able to put into neutral. And pushed it across the 3 lanes of traffic and it started rolling down the curvature of the road and up the driveway into the gas station at the corner. 😅 I was saved! How crazy fortunate was that😊

I live by a Cadillac Buick dealer and the amount of cars I see being towed is crazy, now I don't know for what reason , but if gm "engineers" can't figure out a simple thing like this, I can't imagine what else can go wrong with these rolling trash cans.
That's what GMC calls "Professional Grade 💩 ", and my patriotic side of me says by American brands no matter how crappy they are built. That why I bought one left me stranded twice and I am no longer a Patriot! I support only Japanese brands and proudly display the Japanese flag of the rising sun on my Japanese brands that I currently own like Toyota and Honda! However they are made in America 🇺🇸 but thankfully they are built under the Japanese brands superior quality control and not our American crappy standards of quality and that's a fact. 😢
Please stop being a "Patriot" like I was wasting money buying American, don't buy from the American brands period. I only buy Japanese brands like Toyota, Honda, Mazda, and Subaru. And all my maintenance costs have been cut by 75% when compared to my previous GMC, and Cadillac SUV'S maintenance cost after warranty expired. I am happy with my sellout decision not to buy from any American brand, because it saves me money on maintenance costs!😊
People that own Cadillacs for the most part are well off. You think they are going to pop the hood and get their hands dirty ? NOT ! They are so dense about mechanical things think their car maintain themselves.
Have a talk with your local towtruck driver before buying a new car these days.

I used to own a dealership, and thank God everyday that I’m retired now. Old customers still ask me for new car recommendations. More and more I tell them to refurbish what they have and hang onto it. New cars are increasingly rubbish.
Making cars for over 100 years and still haven't figured out how to make a dependable car.
Go back to before 1972, and they are damn good, other than point ignition.

@@kelvintorrence5994 It's not just American. Take a hard look at Audi, BMW and Mercedes. Some of the most finicky, trouble prone vehicles in the world, although all are great driver cars.
So impressed with how carefully and clever this tow operator is. Kind of galling how, with only a couple,of very minor changes, GM could have made this process trivial and with much less likelihood of damage to the vehicle - say just by allowing the transmission to be shifted to neutral with the engine off and a defeat for the automatic parking brake. A "tow mode" could do all of that without creating any safety risks for the drivers who apparently GM can't trust to operate their own dang emergency brakes.
They have it on some vehicles, IDK why they don't have it on all of them... In this case it's to use those drive thru car washes that tug the car by the wheel. But I suspect you could use it for towing as well?
To activate car wash mode on a Chevy Bolt, you need to follow these steps:
Open the door while pressing the brake, then shift to N (Neutral).
The indicator should now show N. If it does not, select N (Neutral) again.
Shift into P (Park) upon arrival at the car wash.
Drive to the entrance of the car wash.
Apply the brake pedal.
Shift to N (Neutral).
Turn off the vehicle and release the brake pedal.
The indicator should continue to show N. If it does not, repeat steps 2-4.
The vehicle is now ready for the car wash.

the fought a injury claim case for 15 years . they had to pay the settlement before they were allowed to go bankrupt to screw thier creditors again again.
This needs to be a mandatory recall and customers should think about a class action lawsuit. Loss of motive power can be deadly depending where it happens
They don’t have a recall yet… and that’s the problem. They don’t have a fix for the issue, they throw the same faulty parts back in it under warranty.
The recall needs to be for the neutral/parking brake design - this is a screaming safety hazard - NHTSA needs to demand a free-wheeling TOW MODE, activated in the cabin, mechanically if the battery is dead, flooded, etc. Run out of gas, stall on the tracks with two kids in car seats, hamburger all over the railroad tracks. Mercy sakes - they require a backup camera but allow vehicles that cannot be moved out of the traffic lane when stalled? Common sense is dead. Everyone who had it has retired. There is nothing wrong with a linkage shift lever for transmission and a parking brake lever/pedal - all mechanical, no electric solenoids or motors or computers. Every automotive engineer/designer/programmer should be required to serve an internship with a certified mechanic, including time with towmen and experienced service writers and parts clerks.
for recall to go into effect there has to be ground swell of vehicles and most of these recalls happens when the GM engineers can replicate this problem .

Oh man, I would never have the patience to deal with this crap.....and if I had to do what Dustin just did....I wouldn't work for less than a $100 bonus on top of salary. Did you count how many times he had to go inside the customer's truck to press this button or that control or go into his tool inventory to get some additional device that he needed to do this or that maneuver? This is absolutely insane.
As for actually buying any of this programmed, monitor required, all electronic, computer driven bullcrap???? NO WAY. I still drive the vehicle I bought in May of 1992. That would be my 1992 Toyota Shortbed Pickup. For 32 years I have had to actually press a mechanical switch that has A/C written on it in order to turn my compressor on. I even have to toggle between 4 fan speeds. And, check this out....I have to turn a dial on my CD player that says "bass" and "treble" to customize my sound. I have over 600,000 miles on this truck and I will never give it up for the certified garbage that they're charging obscene amounts of money for. If something catastrophic happens to the Toyota, I will just buy another one. I refuse to buy a vehicle where I need a monitor to do anything and everything and I refuse to buy a vehicle where a replacement battery requires me to take out a second mortgage. The woke enviroloons in and out of the government have brought us to this.
Vote TRUMP 2024 and maybe we can then start to get back to normal on a whole range of issues.

I work at a GM store as a parts specialist. I have never seen an Acadia drive into the service drive, always towed in. Chevy has shit the bed with the newer vehicles, everything is warranty and that sucks for the techs & for the customer because it’s all on back order.

I use to like hitting the button on 8-tracks switching between channels.
ie NO electronic engine or body controls.
Radios in cars were an option closing in on 100 years ago.
Remember how often you needed to do plugs and points? Check the distributor cap for wear on the contacts. Clean the carb, because being open to the air the fuel would evaporate and gum would build up. Oh, and they stink when running because the mixture is never perfect, and without O2 sensors and fuel injectors to adjust the ratio it was off way more than on and typically rich because lean would burn the plugs.
So no, cars with "NO electronics" were not better. Somewhere in between there is a happy medium.

10-4 that. My 2013 Silverado cured me too. I now drive an 07 Tundra with 245,000 on it. It's smooth as silk.

The reason it didn't slide is because he didn't disconnect the tow cable underneath. Look, it's there to see. A minute later, he released the cable gear and it went slack and then he pushed it backwards under the GMC. He goofed. When he was rocking the bed to make the GMC slide backwards, you could see the tow strap pull against the wheels, preventing it from sliding. I'm surprised he didn't edit that out. Still, with these auto e-brakes, you still need that soap sprayer. I'm so glad I ride a bicycle and a 2001 van with 202,000 miles on it. I hate cars. I really do.
I bought a 24 Maverick that has a knob to select gears, and an electric parking brake earlier this month. You can bet that I will be searching the owner's manual for tow, electric parking brake, and shift instructions as soon as I click "post" on this comment. Thanks, Dustin!
Good luck I always read my new car manual they know longer tell you about the vehicle big section on how to work your seat belt
I’m a Chevy technician, I do at least 2-3 of the Fuel pump power modules a week. If I was buying or renting these, I would just buy a second fuel pump module and keep it in the car. It’s underneath, near the fuel tank. Then you can just crawl under there and plug in a new one and keep going. I have a couple spares I keep at the shop so I don’t have to push the cars in!😂
Isn’t serialized to the VIN? I know on the early 2010’s GM they don’t do anything until programmed, but a used programmed FPDM will work from another car.

@@nathanm2664 There’s no fuel pressure regulator or return line to the tank. The FPDM controls the fuel pump speed to control fuel pressure. It cheaper to produce and really no downside unless your FPDM is unreliable.
@@nathanm2664 With current efficiency and emission regulations, fuel delivery systems are agonizingly complex. Electric pump in the tank, need to protect from overheat while constantly changing the fuel delivery volume and pressure based on demand, engine temp, outside temp, quality of fuel (optional e85), auto start-stop, phase of the moon, etc. Plus it can be deactivated for security, or if a crash/tilt/rollover is detected. Basically over-engineered to make EPA and the engineering schools happy (more engineers needed.) Give me a good old mechanical pump bolted to the block, sucking through the fuel lines.
If the damn vehicles were manufactured correctly in the first place, ya wouldn't have to do all that "bullshit"!

yep, Toyotas new models have gone to crap have to drive old ones.
- Can’t just blindly rely on Toyota anymore. I needed a whole new engine block due to oil consumption damage in my well maintained RAV4 . Friends new Tacoma has big transmission issues.

GM and just about every other manufacturer knows how to build a reliable vehicle, this has to be on purpose at this point to make their utter money pit, unreliable EV's some how more appealing.
I'm 69 years old. I have been a loyal GM customer for 50 years. I bought a new car last week, and it was a Toyota.
It's nice to see a Man who knows his Trade, it was an enjoyable experience watching Dustin apply his experience to the task.

GM has always had a habit of leaving people stranded on the road. I fondly remember in the 70’s they came out with the HEI distributor with and ignition module that would just go bad with no warning. I kept a good supply in the glove box because you never knew when it would happen.
I least you could replace them yourself without going to a dealership or a repair shop. The HEI distributor was a hell of a lot better than the points on the condenser on the early 70's cars.I bought a 1978 Cadillac Coupe DeVille in 1998 and only repaced the ignition module and the ignition coil, distributor cap about 3 times in 7 years of ownership.
Remember the olds and caddy that was a 2-4-6-8 cylinder depending on load and the 350ci diesel?
Cadillac has never recovered and suffers a bad reliability reputation to this day. You never hear them brag about being the "Standard of the World" anymore. Buick is on top of the heap for GM reliability, but not without issues. Buick doesn't sell cars anymore. They think everyone wants an expensive SUV with turbo 4 cylinder engines which run rough and are crude.

New Heavy equipment and trucks are annoyingly complicated, hard to work on but they know better than to make it like that. GM just takes the cake for stupidity, they went broke in 08 they should have stayed broke and disappeared, they have been making overpriced rust prone junk before and worse after 08
Planned obsolescence. They won't even allow you to push your car in neutral anymore, because they want you to call the dealership's tow service. Vote with your money and boycott this kind of BS!

I'm a transmission mechanic. The torque converters are another huge failure. 6l80e transmissions have check balls in the trans that dissolve after about 50k and/or the pumps fail abour the same milage.
shouldn't those check balls be made of a high quality stainless steel? What could dissolve them. Please don't tell me that they make them out of plastic.

As a 64 yr old man I feel the same way . The quality and reliability of is not there anymore for GM . With all of the years and experience with making vehicles one would think there would be fewer problems with newer models .

GM should just implement a dash button combination to enable "tow mode" where it releases the ebrake, puts the transmission in Neutral, and then sends an email to the owner asking them how satisfied they are with their recovery experience.

Another reason to keep my 2008 TrailBlazer and 1990 K3500 running. Eletronics on a vehicle are worthless to me and everyone else. My first car had seatbelts because i installed them and i could climb under the hood and walk around the engine.

In the future, good old cars will be more expensive than new ones.
If people wouldn’t drive with an almost empty tank they would never have that issue. I worked at a GM dealership and I got the cures.
If my 96 Jeep runs low on gas, it keeps running until it quits. You put gas in it, it starts back up. No harm done. If it dies, I can take it out of gear and release the parking brake.
There's really no excuse whatsoever for a vehicle bricking itself by running it low on gas. That's piss poor engineering. As an engineer, I'd work Walmart before I'd work at GM designing crap like this.
Spend big money on these vehicles and they leave u stranded on the side of the road.. unreal the bs they design now..

Fuel pump moduel failures was extremely common with 2018-21 Tundras as well.
Probably the same damn supplier.
That's why I have a 2001 Tundra.

Just happened to me. 2023 terrain 14000 miles and car just quit right in the middle of an extremely busy 4 way intersection. Fuel pump power control module. Couldn't even push it out of the way would not move. Bad thing was it gave no warning just one minute running fine next minute dead. Not a nice feeling knowing that this could happen again at any time.

@@Towtruck_Dustin dodge had a problem for years with the TIPM fuse box. The fuel pump relay would burn out and you’d have to replace the whole fuse box or bypass the relay by adding an external relay.
Top of the list for me when car shopping is reliability. Definitely not GM, especially since they stopped making 3800.

I quit buying GM 24 years ago. My 2001 Tundra is still running strong.
2023 tundra engine died at 2000 miles. Funny enough a 2001 Chevy Silverado was also a solid truck for its year, especially if it had the 5.7. It’s all garbage now.

Anything built past the early 2000's is made of recycled happy meal toys and soup cans. Anything past the 2020's is made from recycled cell phones and soda cans.
1st Gen tundras are great trucks...until the frame rots in half. Famously recalled for frame rot a long time ago. And now the replacement frames are also rotting.
2001 Tacoma TRD with 375k miles and a 2009 GX470 with 278k miles and they've had less problems in the past 5 years COMBINED than our neighbor's 2 year old Grand Wagoneer. I try not to look smug about it, lol
My son is a top tech for a large GM dealership. He has the GM accredited Grand Master 6 years in a row. The stories he tells me about the vehicles and what absolute junk they are is astounding. Stay away from this stuff.

The G.M. 3.6 is now bulletproof ...after working out many bugs over the years...and the new G.M. turbo 2.7 I'm hearing a lot of good things.... still only 5 years old but some guy posted they have this in their fleet of Silverado's and they all have around 200,000 without issues.... we have Obama's CAFE standards to thank for destroying once reliable vehicles across the board.... 90's and early 2000's American N.A. vehicles were long lasting reliable vehicles....pre CAFE

That's because the engines of diesel-electric engines run at typically ONE **onstant speed** and at NO MORE than ~70% of maximum designed RPM.
You can do the (approximate) same by using your 'cruise control' as much as possible. I myself routinely get 200k-300k out of my engines; but, that also includes 'early' oil changers whenever in predominately 'stop & go' driving. If all your driving is in 'stop & go', consider to change the oil at HALF the recommended interval due to the propensity of the 2010+ vehicles to get STUCK piston rings !!!!
My 2000 Chevy Suburban 4x4 5.3L V8 still runs like new with almost 300,000 beneath her wheels.
Buy a new GM see how that works for you.
6-11-24 GM announced buying back $6 BILLION of stock AND raised their dividend. This is what people want, companies having less rules. Companies are citizens. CEO gets over $30 Million a year.
Buy back stock should be illegal. So they got 6 billion to spend, why not spend it making their cars and trucks more reliable and cheaper

One good thing for the owner of that vehicle is that the rollback driver cares . Most would drag it on and dump it off not caring about damage. He tried his best to do it without making things worse. A good vehicle has not been built after 1999.
Clearly GM didn’t think out towing when they made their vehicles. But once again Dustin awesome job.
GM and safety regulators really NEED to think about a towing mode. Everything breaks, and most vehicles run out of fuel sometime in their life.
IT 'USED TO BE' that automotive companies constantly 'refined' their engineering and untimately which led to RELIABILITY. Now the government mandates in accordance to 'desired' fuel economy (on a monthly/quarterly basis).
The vehicle manufacturers no longer have any control of their own products; that control is now wrested within politicians and ideologue bureaucrats.
It's not just GM. I had a MB that did the same thing! I sold it for 500 bucks! Never again
That seems to be the business model nowadays, push a product out the door as quickly as possible and let the customer work out the kinks, on a high dollar item!
Unfortunately, this has gone on for far too long…, GM doesn’t care because they are too big to fail and will just get bailed out by the federal government.
On a side note, I do have a question for Dustin. Would wheel dollies have worked or not enough clearance? Because even with those skates, that seemed like a lot of work. You are a very nice wrecker driver. I’ve seen guys grease the flat bed, angle the bed up and just drop the vehicle, if you don’t tip them properly…
I have an old car, parts still available and I can fix it on the side of the road, but I have never had to as yet. Modern electronic stuff.....I don't want it . Thanks for the video.

We’ve had to get a door handle and a wheel cover off e-bay, as the junk yards told us they don’t carry stock that old!
My husband taught me how to add oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, which I understand you can’t do yourself on the new expensive junk.
Amen Brother! I have an old 1967 Chev Caprice that I'm married to. Had it for 30 years. Looks like I'll be keepin' it goin' for another 30. It never has let me down. I would not buy a new car if they paid me.

@@2packs4sure Exactly. Get the government out of the picture, do away with fuel injection (which necessitates in-tank electric fuel pumps), go back to mechanical fuel pumps up on the side of the block where anybody can change them on the side of the road (yes, I have done that).
Unbelievable. Thank you for showing this. Not only is GM putting out defective products, they have overengineered shifters and parking brakes to the point where towing them is nearly impossible. I own a 2023 Cadillac XT5, and now I'm just waiting for this to happen to me and some poor unfortunate tow operator.

I had a number Chevy Cruzes. Plenty of problems with them but cheap and easy to DiY repair. The problem is the same problems existed from 2011-2016. GM never invested in fixing common known flaws in design or materials.
Things like this is why I drive an eighteen year old Miata with a standard transmission. And remember cutting edge technology is also known as the bleeding edge of technology. I used to have a ford f150 with early electronic ignition , the module was the square one . After a few failures I actually mounted a spare beside the stock one so I wouldn’t get stranded . Other than that it ran forever .
After watching the video and reading the comments I now understand why GM stands Government Motors. Thanks for sharing the flustration your job and the customers anguish.

Hmm…no mention of Toyota announcing they are replacing 102,000 defective engines in Tundras and Lexus LX vehicles.
Another thing that goes wrong with gm trucks. If you live in the area were they deal with rust. The breaded body ground strap falls apart from corrosion and then the problems start. The dealer will try to sell you everything but a new $50.00 that is a design problem. Or you can get a $10 universal from the corner auto parts store.
Channels like South Main Auto really drive that point home! Terrible...

dude, there is a trick where you use a paint stick to hold the shifter lever located under the hood open which puts the car in Neutral. to keep the car from engaging the ebrake, disconnect the battery. the shift lever is easily accessible, and it is located right below the vertical computer box between the battery and the intake
This only works on the third Thursday of the month and only if you own a black cat.

I’m with you, Honda 2011 Crv and Toyota 2004 Tundra, both over 150,000 miles. No problems, just standard maintenance.

My best friends sister in law works at a bank here in Michigan. She told us, they will not finance the GM SUVs because they are getting stuck repossessing vehicles with blown motors ! Moreover, while getting an oil change for my Honda Civic, the mechanic says the GM end of their dealership has so many blown engines for warranty work they are putting them in their shop. Then he showed me a brand new equinox with the engine laying on the shop floor ! Thank God my family only drives Toyota, Subaru and Hondas !

yup, my caddy 21 xt5 gas module failed. everything locks up. luckily, it was in my driveway. towed, and they
had it for 2 weeks. the car had only 10k on it.
.....and thats why i will drive my 2003 Impala 3800 till the day I die and it will last. Rock Solid, I do all the work. Bought a used 2001 Silverado, with an LS 5.3, am making it cherry as I did my Impala, and will have that till I die. Just a thought My 2018 Chevy Cruze has push button start. If you have the key fob and you push and hold the start button without your foot on the brake pedal for 6 seconds it puts the car into service mode witch allows you to shift out of park and into neutral without starting the car

I like my 16 Honda Pilot, Manual shift lever and manual parking brake. No "start/stop", but it has pushbutton start. I can live with that.
As a fellow tow truck driver, I’m always towing these new GM vehicles as well. Im from Orlando, and it’s wild. The Jeeps aren’t much better at all either, especially the 4xe’s, and then the hybrid Pacificas. But these Acadias are extremely irritating.
It's not only the engineer who is to blame; management is mostly to blame. When the head is not good, the whole body suffers.
If I'm not mistaken, on the Cadillac XT5 as you described also has the same neutral lockout, and what I found out (Rental Fleet) was just up under the dash at the forward console an Access panel, open pull the BRIGHT RED strap and you are in neutral 👍
it was a shame as the Rental Customer "frustrated?" I would imagine smashed the Dash Screen, and ripped up the center console lid up and broke that as well, the original reason for the lockup into Park mode was an internal transmission solenoid had failed. And locked into Park. If anything, GM and all other manufacturers using this Silly idea maybe perhaps have a warning Label on the Visor with Instructions. I'm sure it's in the Shop Manual

The exact same thing just happened to my 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio, while exiting the freeway. Needless to say it was scary as cars are zipping by me. The car would not go in to neutral and I couldn’t push it out of the roadway. Strangely enough, after sitting for a few hours , the car started up and had no warning lights. I guess I landed in this video because I’m now looking at some GM SUV’s or maybe not.

My SIL’s traverse did this, luckily in a parking lot. People couldn’t care less, it’s just get out of the middle of the parking lot. You can’t do anything to move these things and he had a 3 and 6 year old with him. When my daughter went to pick up the car at the dealership they told her it could happen again at any point. Great.
At least the dealer was honest - they are stuck between the unhappy customers and the incompetent OEM. It was a subtle hint to sell or trade soon, even for a non-GM. Sorry about that negative equity. Got a match?

My buddy has a 93 Silverado and it has a problem from time to time and I tell him to keep it forever. It's more reliable than a brand new one 🤣
