@crouchy2702 it's what i was thinking. if u're not sanding the lip of the plug the screw can't hold well the fin attachment for GoPro. I'm not an expert either just a novice on shaping surfboards. Try to put a mini leash plug near the fin plug like this u'll never lose the camera. Good idea to do the video like this we can improve our inventions. Cheers
The reason it fell out is because GoPro attachment wasn't getting put in deep enough for the screw to engage because the top of the plug wasn't sanded down. You're not supposed to drill those little holes for the tabs. They sit on the surface of the fiberglass and make sure the plug is set at the right depth. Once the plug is glued in with the resin you sand down the top of the plug until it is flush with the rest of the board (when the little tabs disappear you know you've sanded far enough).
@IGcolin Hi there, thanks for your comments :-) We made the holes for the lugs just to keep the plug flush with the board. We felt it looked tidier, that's all. The plug didn't get ripped out when we lost the cam. It was the attachment that GoPro provide that's held in by the fcs grub screw that came out. We're no experts at this; we were looking on youtube for help in doing it, but found nothing. Once we'd done a couple of our older boards, we decided to film one to give others some idea.
@sandford6016 Thanks for the comments:-) That's a good idea with the leash plug for extra cover. We have still managed to lose a camera even with the fin plug system. It got ripped out during a wipeout... after colliding with my head! It then sunk like a stone:-/ Still what's a couple of hundred quid on a new Camera?!?!
Go pro now make a floating device that attaches to the camera. Trust me, they sink fast. Use a forstner bit to drill the hole, it will take you 30 secs. The black tabs sit on the deck and are sanded off when your resin dries.
@crouchy2702 why did u do those lil holes? the small plastic "things" are just to have the plug on the fiber glass level. u lost the cam coz of the lil lip of the plug, the screw didn't catch it good . i'm building a surfboard now and i was thinking same as sandford6016 but instead of a normal leash plug to put a mini one. good video by the way (sorry my bad english explanation)
Thank you for this! Excellent video!
Thanks man, just done mine! The only difference I did was add a leash plug next to it so the camera has an additional anchor point.

@crouchy2702 get the floaty backdoor for sure so you dont lose it so easy :P

If you used a marker that was close to the boards color on he top 1/2 inch the resin would show that color through.
